Senate Hears Hatfeld Report; Consttuton s Volated n ts frst meetng of the new year, the Student Senate agenda ncluded a report by Guy Hatfeld, student member of the Board of Regents. Of major nterest to the Senate were the followng: As of July 1, the Unversty wll have a full-tme lawyer whose offce n the Unversty Center wll be P*n to both students and faculty. The Board proposed longer use of textbooks through standardzaton n the varous departments. Blacks Present Presdent Martn Wth Questons BY FAWN CONLEY Staff Wrter Presdent Robert R. Martn met wth Eastern's Black Student Unon Monday nght n an attempt to answer questons presented by Eastern's black student body. The meetng was orgnally scheduled for last semester but was cancelled when Presdent Martn elected to do more research on the questons. The BSU presented four man ponts to be dscussed, the recrutment of black students and faculty, the expanson of the black studes courses on campus and black-whte relatons on campus. Presdent Martn explaned that Eastern employed an open door admttance polcy n the recrutment of students and that no funds were approprated especally for the recrutment of black students. "Money comes to our campus t's A Gas because of needy students," stated Dr. Martn. He also stated that the funds are gven to ths campus "qute devod of race." Martn also repled that the matter had been brought before the Board of Regents, who took a negatve vew on the settng asde of money for the recrutment of mnorty students. However, when asked why Eastern recruters knew nothng about black actvtes on campus, the admnstrators present could not answer. Black Representaton The queston of black admnstrators and faculty brought the response that Eastern has fve blacks on ts professonal staff n drect contact wth the students. Martn also repled that Western and Morehead have fve, whle Murray had none. When asked when a black Photo by Jm Shephtrd Ted- Guet accompanes on gutar. The Gaslght Theater's producton, "The World of Rod McKuen. The program conssted of some of the Amercan poet's works. dormtory drector would be hred, Martn answered, " have no objecton to a black dorm drector at Eastern," However, Martn went on to explan that Eastern has no more black admnstrators or dorm drectors than t does because of the lack of applcatons. Presdent Martn proceeded to say that one black admnstrator had been hred for Eastern's staff, but had been offered more money n a dfferent state and had accepted that job nstead. Another area of concern for the BSU was that of a black counselor at Eastern, to whch Martn repled that he expected to have one, but dd not say when. Black Studes Program A queston whch brought consderable dscusson from both the BSU and the admnstraton was that of the advancement of the black studes program on campus. A major complant was that although there are such courses offered, they are at tmes whch are nconvenent to students wshng to take them, such as Saturdays. n reply to the queston, Thomas F. Stovall, Vce Presdent for Academc Affars, stated that the only nstructor to be found for the course was from Kentucky State and could come no other tme. Along the same lne, the students present were asked who would be nterested n MEMBERS OF Eastern's Black Student Unon lsten ntently as Dr. Martn answers questons durng last Monday nght's dscusson. The meetng, attended by a number of students and admnstrators, was desgned to let BSU takng the course descrbed. Although a number rased hands, consderably less ndcated that they had taken the course. Vce-Presdent Stovall outlned what has been done n dfferent areas to ncorporate black studes nto courses. He stated that the expanson had been manly n regular courses such as Englsh rather (Contnued Oa Page Tea) Photo by Larry Baley members know about Eastern's polces concernng recrutment of mnorty students and faculty, advancements n black studes courses and the qualty of black-whte relatonshps on campus. The Center Board was approved as permanent nsttuton, but the request for a student charman was dened. The money requested for the Black Arts Festval was allotted, but all other funds were dened. The Board was unable to act on the request made by the Senate for a new advsor because t s a stated functon of the Vce Presdent for Academc Affars. Followng the report from Hatfeld, the proposal for purchase of a mmeograph machne was brought to a vote, and passed unanmously. Mecktroth Apponted Chuck Kelhoffer, student assocaton presdent announced hs appontment of Dan Meckstroth, junor economcs major from Batava, Oho, to fll the vacancy on the Student Rghts Commttee created by Harry Prats, Spansh major from Mansfeld, Oho, who graduated. Merle Mlddleton, senor drama major from Md dlesboro, wll assume the poston of charman of the commttee whch was prevously held by Prats. n the presentaton of a request concernng women's rghts on campus, Pam Cosby, freshman nursng major from Lousvlle sad, " am confdent that speak for an overwhelmng majorty of the suppressed women of Eastern." Women's Rghts Proposal n the proposal she asked the Senate to request publc support from the women's nter-dorm Councl to go through the proper channels to affect a change. Kelhoffer repled that a sut mght possbly be fled aganst the Unversty on the grounds of sex dscrmnaton. He sad, "women are at a dsadvantage and have sanctons mposed on them smply because they are women." Tom Chamberln moved to mpeach hmself due to falure to mantan a 2.0 average as stated by the consttuton as a requrement of membershp. The mpeachment was voted down, revealng a loophole n the Senate consttuton. Ths was recognzed by Kelhoffer who sad, "t looks lke we just volated the consttuton." No Verdct Reached Concernng Hetrck Sut BY BETSEY BELL Academcs Edtor Dr. Phylls B. Hetrck's sut aganst Dr. Robert R. Martn and the Board of Regents closed yesterday n U.S. Dstrct Cojrt n Lexngton. At press tme, Judge Mac Swnford had not reached a decson n the case. Her sut alleged that her contract was not renewed due to the presdent's polcy of not rehrng those faculty who are recognzed to have " "Controversal deas" or to be "too lberal." She s requestng through her sut an njuncton drectng her reappontment Second Semester Concerts Center Board Announces Entertanment For Sprng BY LSA COLLNS Staff Wrter Three programs reman on the Unversty Center Board Fne Arts and Lecture Seres for ths sprng.. n February the Preservaton Hall Jazz Band, wll perform, followed by Jose Greco and Hs Dancers n March. Ralph Nader's lectured- on "Envronmental Hazards-Man Made and Man Remeded, s scheduled for Aprl. "'m sure all of these wll prove to be excellent programs that wll sut the taste of everybody, as dd all of the prevous programs ths year." sad Hayward Daughtery, drector of, student actvtes and organzatons. The Center Board s also presentng several rock groups n concert ths semester. "Rather than have all bg names perform ths sprng and have just two or three concerts." sad Daugherty, "we decded to brng n good groups that are on the way up along wth already establshed groups to have a well-rounded program." The hard rock group. Cactus, wll start the season off tentatvely Feb. 1 at the Alumn Colseum. Country rock snger Mac Davs who wrote "Watchng Scotte Grow" and " Beleve n Musc" wll follow n February. n recent months he has made several appearances on the Johnny Carson show. "Mac Davs s an excellent performer." sad Daugherty. "He always gets a standng ovaton no matter where he goes. He s tremendous for college performances." Chase wll be at the colseum n March. A combnaton of Blood. Sweat and Tears and Chcago, ths more-brass-thanaverage group plays a straght 90 mnutes wth no nteruptons. They currently have several albums out. Also n March Henry Mancn wll be n concert wth hs 38 pece orchestra. "The name Henry Mancn speaks for tself," sad Daugherty "He has sx gold albums and has won every muscal award there s ncludng sx grammys. Hs performance rounds out the overall program for the unversty communty because he plays for all types of people. Hs hts nclude "Moon Rver," "Dear Heart." the theme song "Peter Gunn" and you could go on and on." "We have had very good success n all our productons ths year wth exceptons such as the late arrval of Smokey Robnson and the Center Board would lke to thank the students and the communty for ther support and hope that they come out for our pop concerts ths sprng. f everyone shows up for these concerts they won't be slghted because all of t s top notch entertanment." Negotatons are presently underway to sgn recordng star Elton John for a concert n Aprl. At press tme, no detals were avalable but Unversty offcals ndcated that they are hopng to have the rock star under contract for Aprl 27. and a lst of reasons why her contract was not renewed. She pleaded her case on the fact that her consttutonal rghts of the frst and fourteenth amendments were dened. Dr. Kelly Thurman, charman of the Englsh Department, testfed that there were three reasons why Dr. Hetrck's contract was not renewed: students complaned of her nconsstency of assgnments, her nablty to cover the amount of work expected of her, and the doubt that she would be able to fnsh Ph.D. n the tme lmt set by the Unversty. Thurman also testfed " suspect told her to "Stck to the text and not talk about the war." Three faculty members testfed as to Thurman appontng them to a "secret evaluatng commttee." They were to evaluate all frst year appontees for renewal of ther contracts. None of the members of the commttee observed Dr. Hetrck's classes. One member testfed that Thurman had mentoned the fact that Dr. Hetrck "was not very socable wth her colleagues." None of the members sad that they remembered Vetnam beng subject matter of the commttee. However, one member sad that he had heard rumors of censorshp. Presdent Martn testfed that hs attenton was called to Dr. Hetrck after recevng complants from one student's parents. They complaned of (( mlmrl (n Pane Four) ' A

Powell Buldng Brghtens New Ykar The New Year brought to Eastern, the J.C. Powell Buldng. After fve years of plannng and buldng Eastern's Unversty Center became a realty. Durng the past week students have been flockng to the Center to nspect and explore what was for the past two years a mass of drt, ron ppes and concrete. Needless to say, they were pleased wth what they saw. The new Center, although mposng and stately on the outsde offers a warm and relaxed atmosphere nsde. The lounges on the ground floor are furnshed wth numerous modern but comfortable sofas and chars. Also there s a TV n the Mare Roberts room located on the same floor. Conference rooms are avalable to any student or faculty organzaton for meetngs. Below the the ground floor s the grll, whch s an unbeleveable mprovement over the old one n the SUB. t's three tmes as bg and wthout a doubt, much cleaner. The atmosphere of the new grll s more relaxng and not as hectc as the old one. No longer wll students have to fght just to walk through the grll. Also on ths same floor s the bggest thng to ht Eastern snce the Hanger Stadum : bowlng lanes. Now students can enjoy some entertanment wthout havng to drve fve mles. Pool tables and bumper pool are located drectly behnd the lanes. Although t does cost a dollar an hour, ths doesn't seem to drve patrons off. There s also a card room, whch can always be of use. Located on the top floor s the cafetera. Ths s the bggest change of all. No longer do you feel lke you're dnng n the Astrodome. t s well lghted and even Some Students Should Realze Everyone Deserves Respect n today's college campus lfe of blue jeans, long har and ndvdualsm, some students seem to feel that such thngs as common courtesy and respect ;-are not necessary. An example of abuse to these two attrbutes was wtnessed last Monday nght at a meetng of Eastern's Black. Student Unon and Dr. Robert R. Martn. The meetng had been arranged n order to gve Dr. Martn a chance to answer questons presented to hm by thebsu. Although most of the students there, both whte and black, were at the meetng because they cared about what was gong on, a few students apparently came only to groan and make remarks.when they were not pleased wth what.was beng sad, no matter who the speaker. These few students obvously -dd not know the mportance of the. meetng or, more unfortunately, dd not care. Dr. Martn and other members of the -admnstraton chose to gnore outbursts.of clappng and groanng throughout the meetng and contnued wth answers to questons or explanatons. One area of dscusson whch brought many uncalled for remarks from the audence was that of the tme perod for a black studes course. One student felt called upon to remark that she ddn't feel lke gettng up on Saturday mornng to go to class. Apparently ths student was not lstenng when Dr. Martn and Dr. Thomas Stovall, Vce-Presdent for Academc Affars, explaned that the nstructor was from Kentucky State College and could come only on Feffer Saturday. Perhaps she was too busy talkng or laughng wth a frend. Nor dd she take nto consderaton that there are other students on campus who get up on Saturday mornngs and go to class. These students see no reason to complan because they understand that the tme perod s the only one avalable. These few frustrated students also took no notce of the feelngs' or opnons of the admnstrators present ether, as they argued a pont whch could not be changed anyway. They apparently seem unaware of the fact that they were causng very obvous embarrassment of both the faculty there and the other students. Whether or not the students present were rude and dsrespectful ntentonally s not known, but surely anyone of college age should have realzed the mportance of the meetng and should have consdered that even f t was of no nterest to some students, t may have been to others. The admnstrators were not the only recpents of the abuse, however. Black Student Unon presdent Larry Pennngton took the podum at the end of the meetng to say somethng whch was undetermned by ths wrter smply because many of those present rose and began to leave the room whle he spoke. Apparently a number of students on Eastern's campus do not know or understand the meanngs of common courtesy and respect for other people, no matter who they are. n a unversty atmosphere, students and admnstrator alke, should be able to express ther deas and expect people to at least lsten. : carpeted. The Board of Regents room s also located on ths floor and t s most mpressve. No one can deny the beauty of the buldng or the opportuntes and entertanment t can provde the students. However, t's up to the students to take advantage of what the new Center has to offer. Snce we are all responsble students there s certanly no need for a remnder to keep the Center clean andwell kept as the day t was opened. Dr. Martn Offers Words Of Wsdom Last Wednesday nght Dr. Robert R. Martn addressed a group of campus leaders on topcs rangng from leadershp to the prce of textbooks. The group was made up of elected offcers of all campus organzatons. Dr. Martn also talked about the mage of the presdent and the responsbltes of that offce, how the unversty operates and the meanng of respect. We hope that hs words wll be remembered and provde some help for the leaders of ths campus. Wth an expanded physcal plant and. an ncrease n the number of faculty over the past eleven and one half years, Dr. Martn sad, "Eastern meets the needs of the students and those of, Kentucky." He added, "We can be.. proud of the students, they are an ambtous group and know where they are gong." t seems that the mage of unversty presdents s generally bad. Ths may be because many students don't understand the ntrcaces n runnng a complex unversty. "The legslature created the Unverstes and hred an executve offcer to carry out ther polces," Presdent Martn sad. "What mght seem to be authorty to some students s actually a matter of responsblty." "t s more mportant to respect an ndvdual than lke hm." He also sad "there s no excuse for bad manners and dsrespect." Of all the problems facng students, the hgh prce of textbooks s one of great mportance now that regstraton s over and most of the books requred have been bought. "Books are too hgh and there s nothng we can do about that. The real ssue s that we change books too often. The bookstores should not be blamed for the hgh prces," he sad. As the Presdent concluded he left the group wth some phlosophy from Rchard Evans, "lead, follow, or get out of the way." wte BOY/? TH5 POWELL BULDNG S GREAT > BUT TOMORROW 'VE GOT TO 60 TO CLASS. Wrte Om! Letters for publcaton should be typewrtten. double spaced, and not more than 250 words long. All letters must be sgned and no names wll be wthheld from prnt. The edtor reserves the rght to edt all letters provdng the meanng wu not be altered. Letters whch may subject the Progress and-or the wrter to lbel wll be returned for ' rewrtng or wthdrawal. ' -'»- ' - ' ' ' Dear Edtor; Drug Educaton Drugs are a problem all over the Unted States. Nobody denes that.eastern doesn't deny t ether. There s a drug program on ths campus but t needs the help of ndvdual students to become effectve. As Charman of the Advsory Board on Drug Abuse would lke to see ths thng work, but need people. need people who are wllng to learn about drugs and then share that knowledge wth other people. f you've done a lttle weed or dropped a few plls or even f you've done hard stuff and come off, that doesn't dsqualfy you. n my eyes t makes you more qualfed because you would be talkng about drugs from a personal vew and wouldn't have to rely completely on books. The purpose of ths project s to stamp out gnorance; to keep people from makng foolsh mstakes but you're not gong-to delver sermons, you're gong to delver nformaton, Facts. Ths program needs your help. There s good to be done but we must get started. f you're nterested Just pck up an applcaton from me or from'the Student Assocaton Offce, fll t out and turn t n to ether Mr. Kelhoffer or myself. You 11 be screened for your atttude about drugs and abusers and you'll be put through a weekend of prelmnary tranng. After that you go to the dorms or other meetng places on campus and dscuss the problem. The deadlne for these applcatons s Feb. 3. Ths s so we can get ths program together and start t workng. Jon us and help. De Federmaua s made up of all the ngredents that guarantee a fun evenng at the theatre. t s full of waltzes, marches and muscal numbers that were ranked hghest on the lst of popular tunes when they were wrtten and have remaned on the top ever snce. t's a wld mxture of glamorous young men out to have a good tme, susceptble wves, schemng chambermads, mstaken denttes and Vennese ballrooms, all seasoned wth enough champagne to bubble from begnnng to end. De Fledermaus wll be produced and drected by KOA's producerdrector Mortz Bombard. Choreography wll be by Lousvlle Ballet Company's artstc drector Nels Jorgensen. Dr. Falke, a noted Austran ballmaster, s seekng revenge on hs frend Gabrel von Esensten. Once when the two were returnng home from a masquerade, Esensten deposted the sleepng Falke dressed as a bat n a publc square, where he awakened to the jeers of a crowd. Dubbed "Dr. Fledermaus" (Dr. Bat) ever snce, Dr. Falke swears to get even. Baron von Esenstenn has been commtted to prson for eght days for nsultng an offcal, partly through the neffcency of hs attorney, Dr. Blnd. Hs frend, Falke, however, persuades hm to postpone t untl the morrow and to accompany hm to a ball at the glamorous palace of Prnce Orlofsky. Esensten accepts the nvtaton. After hs departure Rosalnde, hs wfe, s vsted by a former admrer, Alfres. The nght has set n and Frank, the warden of the prson, has come to take Esensten to jal. He fnds Alfred takng hs ease, and Alfred n order not to embarrass Roasalnde, goes to jal n Esensten's stead. Falke, who has receved carteblanche from Prnce Orlofsky, has also nvted Frank, the mad Adele, and to complete the joke, Rosalnde. The latter, n order to be able to observe her husband unnotced appears masked She s ntroduced by Falke as an Hungaran countess, and succeeds n abstractng from the pockets of her husband hs valuable watch, to use n the future as a Corput delct. The next mornng they all fnd themselves n prson where mstaken denttes, assumed names, carelessly gven promses, msdrected ambtons lead to delghtful confuson. Wth the help of lovely grls, forgvng wves, repentant husbands and last but not least a good porton of champagne everythng s amcably solved. Musc Dept. 7 *v-' Page t-thunday, January 20, ltll-the EASTERN PROGRESS BY JM KURK Progress Sports Edtor We Lke New Frosh Rulng Over the holdays the NCAA, as you probably have heard by now, passed a resoluton whch allows freshmen to partcpate n varsty football and basketball. The new rulng s subject to the approval of the ndvdual conferences n the NCAA, but most, f not all, of the leagues are expected to pass the bll. thnk t's a good rule and one that should have been passed sooner. n most cases, t won't have a great mpact because few freshmen, n general, are ready for varsty competton when they come to a campus fresh out of hgh school, but n the nstances where someone s capable of playng as a freshman hell be able to now. Because of the new rule, then, a school wll be able to put ts absolutely best team on the court or feld, and ths s as t should be. The most apparent bad stuton that ths rule wll solve, of course, s that famlar one of a school whch has a medocre varsty basketball team and a player of superstar potental on ts freshman squad. The talented freshman would now be able to compete and the school would then be able to place ts best team on the court. The Colonels journeyed to Oklahoma Cty just after Chrstmas and captured the champonshp trophy ot the All-College Classc Tournament there. Throughout the tourney the Colonels played excellent basketball n whppng Texas Tech, Santo Clara, and Oklahoma Cty U. en route to the ttle. Charle Mtchell, who's averagng over 24 ponts a game now, was named the most valuable player of the tournament and he, along wth George Bryant, who's now averagng almost 22 per outng, made the All-Tournament frst team. After the tourney Eastern dropped two tough nonconference games, one a road contest to that rugged Southwest Lousana team that came here n December (they're n the top 20 n the naton now) and a home encounter to Oral Roberts (who's already knocked off Morehead and Western). A rushee should realze that sororty members wll not engage n prolonged conversaton wth a rushee, but wll be helpful and courteous to any student. f at any tme a rushee wshes to drop rush, she must contact her rush counselor before returnng her nvtatons. Slence begns January 9 through January 22. By Planned Parenthood Aborton nformaton Offered BY BETSEY BELL Academcs Edtor There are many ponts to be consdered when a grl plans to have an aborton. She should be sure of her decson and waste no tme n a qurng nformaton. Most doctors fgure that by the tme a grl msses her frst perod she s usually two weeks pregnant. Up to the thrd month, abortons are consdered relatvely safe. Later the aborton becomes more complcated and more costly. n Kentucky the present condtons on legal abortons are "to save the lfe of the mother." Recently the Amercan Law nstute bll has been drafted for consderaton n the legslature whch allows aborton due to health of the mother, rape or ncest. These must be performed n hosptals and approved by three doctors. There are three places n Kentucky whch offer nformaton concernng clncs n New York and Washngton D. C. n Lousvlle and Lexngton are the Planned Parenthood Assocatons. The Mountan Maternal Health League n Berea also offers ths servce. Planned Parenthood n Lousvlle cannot gve lsts of referral servces, but they can contact the Manhattan Planned Parenthood whch offers nformaton concernng clncs and hosptals. Mrs. Keyes, who heads Lousvlle's Planned Parenthood explaned that ther board of lawyers would not allow her to supply grls wth clnc phone numbers or those of hosptals. She sad, "f a grl decdes that she wants an aborton she can come here and wll gve her the number of the Manhattan Planned Parenthood. She must ten them the number of weeks she suspects she's pregnant. They wll then gve her a lst of numbers for clncs and hosptals. f she calls one clnc and doesn't lke the tone of voce or the way they treat her then she has more numbers from whch she may choose." She mentoned that Washngton D.C. wll only accept those pregnant up to ten weeks. She sad that most clncs charge around $150 up to fourteen weeks. Any grl underage needs an affadavt sgned by her parents. Angela Hearng, at Planned Parenthood n Lexngton explaned that she had more freedom n advsng grls. She s allowed to fve numbers of clncs and hosptals. She sad that n New York she refers grls to ether East Women's Center or Eastgate Medkal Group. n Washngton D.C. she refers them to Preterm. Mss Hearng explaned that the most mportant thng s for the grl to be sure that she wants an aborton. She emphassed that speed s another major consderaton.."the early abortons range from $150 to $200 and after the thrd perod s mssed they can go as hgh as $350" Mss Hearng sad, "All pay referral servces were banned last July. They were takng money from grls when they should not have." She explaned that these referral servces were placng ads n small town newspapers where women were not well educated about aborton procedures. She sad that a few agences operatng provde servces. "They wll book a grl's flght and wll have a chauffeur at the arport to take her to the offce where she can call the clncs. They also help the grls fnd places to stay. Last year we referred 310 grls-about a month." Mss Hearng sad that n the Washngton clncs grls who go for abortons are gven counselors. "The grl s wth her counselor from the tme she enters the clnc through the aborton. There s no pushng the grl nto aborton. They always have the opton of changng ther mnds." V BSU Questons Martn (Contnued From Page One) than separate courses whch mght have been avoded by students. Such thngs as Afrcan hstory and slave trade have been ncluded n regular General Studes courses because more students come nto contact wth these courses. Emphass s placed on black studes n many courses, but specal emphass s placed on the College of Arts and Scences, manly because t s the largest. Relatonshps between whtes and blacks on campus presented another area of dscusson. " don't beleve t's all whte racsm," Martn stated. "mproved relatonshps are a matter of gve and take," contnued Martn. He also stated that, "We cannot lve n harmony... as long as racsm exsts n any form." One topc of dscusson centered around the conference room assgned to the Black Student Unon n the Powell Center. The room s to be used on the condton that, "f you need t all the whle, you keep t all the whle," accordng to Martn. However, Martn also stated that, "f t's not to be used by you at a certan tme and some other group needs to use t, hope you wll allow them to use t." Further meetng between Dsv Martn and Larry Pennngton, Black Student Unon presdent took place Wednesday mornng.
