The Commencement ceremony, whch lasts approxmately an hour and a half, s held outsde n front of the Bowdon College Museum of Art under most weather condtons. If t s ranng, brng an umbrella and other ran gear. In the event of severe weather, the ceremony wll be held n the Sdney J. Watson Arena. What wll the weather be lke? How should I dress? May weather n Mane can be extremely varable. Commencement guests who brng approprate clothng for ran and cool temperatures, as well as for warm weather, wll be well prepared. Remember that Commencement s planned for outsde, so wear shoes sutable for walkng on grass. Are tckets requred for the Commencement ceremony? No tckets are needed for the outdoor ceremony, and you may brng as many guests as you wsh. If the ceremony s moved nsde, tckets wll be requred for seatng n Watson Arena. What happens f the Commencement ceremony moves nsde? Should severe weather necesstate movng the Commencement ceremony nsde, each senor wll be ssued four tckets for seatng n Watson Arena. Those wthout tckets may watch a lvestream of the ceremony on a large screen n Farley Feld House, located adjacent to Watson Arena. The decson to move nsde wll be made on Saturday mornng and communcated to famles va the Commencement webste and notfcatons on the Commencement moble app. Where do students st durng the ceremony? Senors are seated n front of the stage and are n alphabetcal order. As you face the stage, those whose last names begn wth A-J st on the rght sde; those whose last names begn wth K-Z st on the left. Where do famles and guests st? What tme should we arrve? Famles and guests may st n any areas not marked as reserved. Please ask an usher f you are unsure. We ask that all guests arrve and take ther seats by 9:20 a.m. to vew the Processonal March. Where can I get somethng to eat or drnk? Water and coffee stands are located around the permeter of the Commencement seatng area. Snacks and other beverages are avalable for purchase n the Bowdon Express and the Café, both located n the Davd Saul Smth Unon. Where can I fnd restrooms? Men s, women s, and handcap-accessble restrooms are located n Moulton Unon, Hawthorne-Longfellow Lbrary, Davd Saul Smth Unon, and the Bowdon College Museum of Art. Addtonal men s and women s restrooms are located n Gbson Hall, Hubbard Hall, and the Vsual Arts Center (lower level). 7 FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS Parkng and Shuttles Are shuttles avalable for guests needng assstance? Golf carts, drven by volunteers, run on Frday begnnng at 3:30 p.m. to shuttle guests needng assstance from the man campus to Baccalaureate, and from the Lobster Bake to parkng. On Saturday, golf carts run between 8:30 a.m. and 10:00 a.m. from North Campus Drve and n front of the Chapel to the Commencement ceremony. Followng the ceremony, both golf carts and larger shuttle buses are avalable to transport guests from the quad to the luncheon (buses pck up n front of Moulton Unon; golf carts pck up n front of the Chapel), and from the luncheon to parkng. Where can I park? All campus parkng lots are open to Commencement guests. Please see the parkng map located on the back page for locatons, desgnated wth a P. Publc parkng s allowed on Park Row n desgnated spots. There are also a large number of parkng spaces at Watson Arena, convenent for Baccalaureate and meals held at Farley Feld House. Where do those wth physcal dsabltes park? Handcap parkng spaces are desgnated n all parkng areas. A large number of handcap spaces can be found on North Campus Drve and at Watson Arena. Photo areas are clearly marked near the stage next to graduate seatng. Whle we understand that famles want to take photos of ths specal event, we ask that you be consderate of others when dong so and that you respect requests to move or st down. Wll there be a professonal photographer takng pctures? A professonal photographer from GradImages wll photograph each senor recevng ther dploma. Proofs wll be sent automatcally to each student s home address wthn approxmately two weeks. If you prefer to receve dgtal proofs, please go to gradmages.com and clck on Pre-Event Regstraton to sgn up. After the Ceremony Where can famles meet graduates after the ceremony? Students follow the stage party down the center asle for the recessonal, marchng toward the Chapel. Famles and guests may meet graduates n the area between the Chapel and Massachusetts Hall. Medcal Assstance In the event of a medcal emergency, please contact Bowdon Securty by dalng 3500 from any phone nsde a Bowdon buldng, from your moble phone, or use an outdoor emergency phone (marked wth a blue lamp). For mnor medcal problems, you may wsh to vst the Md Coast Walk-In Clnc, located at Brunswck Staton. Md Coast Hosptal ( ) s also located a few mles from campus at 123 Medcal Center Drve n Brunswck and has an emergency room. Guest W-F Bowdon provdes wreless access to guests of the College n all campus buldngs as well as the athletc felds, Coastal Studes Center, and many outdoor spaces around campus. 1. Choose BOWDOIN-GUEST from the lst of wreless networks on your computer or moble devce. 2. A regstraton page wll automatcally load. If t does not, open a web browser. If your browser does not mmedately connect to the regstraton page, refresh your browser wndow. 3. Fll n the regstraton nformaton. Guests are not requred to have a Bowdon ID, but you wll need to enter your name and e-mal address. 4. Once your regstraton s complete, clck Log In. Commencement Gfts The Bowdon Store, located n the Davd Saul Smth Unon, sells Bowdon College dploma frames, class rngs, and other gfts. Items can be purchased n advance onlne at store.bowdon.edu or by callng Pets and Servce Anmals Pets are prohbted nsde all campus buldngs and at all dnng events. Servce anmals are welcome. Lost and Found Lost tems wll be turned n at the Securty Communcatons Center. Inqures about lost artcles can be made n person or by callng Sustanablty Sustanablty s a core value at Bowdon and the College engages n pro-envronmental behavors, ncludng waste reducton, recyclng, envronmentally preferable purchasng, and energy conservaton on an ongong bass. Durng Commencement Weekend, Dnng Servce uses bodegradable cups, bowls, plates, and utensls for all outdoor meals, and 100 percent of Commencement Luncheon waste s composted. Recyclng bns are placed n outdoor areas, and energysavng LED lght bulbs are used n all outdoor tents. Electrcty use durng Commencement Weekend s provded n part by Bowdon s 1.2 megawatt solar power complex, whch ncludes approxmately 4,420 solar panels at four major nstallatons. 5. Access to Bowdon s guest wreless wll expre n twenty-four hours but can be renewed by followng steps 1 4 above. College Alcohol Polcy The Bowdon communty s remnded that no one under the age of twenty-one may purchase, procure, transport, or consume alcoholc beverages. State law and College polcy prohbt the publc consumpton of alcohol, and the College s lquor lcense prohbts us from allowng guests to brng ther own lquor nto any College recepton or dnng event. 11 LOOKING BACK Graduatng Classes The frst: seven graduates n 1806 The smallest: three graduates n 1807 Best-known: Class of 1825, wth Hawthorne and Longfellow Frst black graduate: John Brown Russwurm, 1826 Frst woman graduate: Susan D. Jacobson, 1971 Hstorc Celebratons 1806: The frst Commencement was held n the second meetnghouse of Frst Parsh Church across the street from the College. 1824: In Portland, an honorary degree was awarded to the Marqus de Lafayette. 1852: Commencement durng Bowdon s semcentennal celebraton took place n a large tent on the Quad. Frankln Perce (1824) and Nathanel Hawthorne (1825) were n attendance. 1875: On the day before Commencement at the ffteth reunon of the Class of 1825, Henry Wadsworth Longfellow rected hs poem Mortur Salutamus, an elegac reflecton on youth and age. Graduaton Speeches Untl 1877, every graduate had a speakng part. Addresses were gven n Latn, German, and occasonally Greek or Hebrew. The custom of selectng student Commencement speakers through competton began n the 1880s. Honorary Degrees In the early years, students who had receved degrees from one nsttuton could also receve recprocal degrees from another. In 1806, thrteen Harvard graduates also took Bowdon degrees. Faculty also frequently added Bowdon master s degrees to ther lst of credentals. Bowdon currently awards several honorary degrees each year. There are approxmately 123 lvng Bowdon honorary degree holders. 1909: Admral Robert E. Peary (1877) receved an LL.D. n honor of hs reachng the North Pole. 2005: Bowdon celebrated ts 200th Commencement. D 18 19d

12 LOOKING BACK Degrees Awarded Bowdon now confers only the Bachelor of Arts degree. To date, 31,135 degrees n academc programs have been awarded. From 1821 to 1921, Bowdon s Medcal School of Mane awarded degrees to more than 2,000 doctors. Bachelor of Scence degrees were awarded from 1875 through 1883 (ncludng to Robert E. Peary n 1877) through a Scentfc Department naugurated by Presdent Joshua Chamberlan; and agan from 1914 through 1949 to those whose programs emphaszed mathematcs over the classcs.
