Fast Before The Feast The altar was bare of flowers. The prest was vested n purple. For the Church the season of Advent had begun. It was the begnnng of the fast before the feast. But n the Sunday newspapers the advertsements proclamed the begnnng of the holday season. Hotels advertsed ther facltes for handlng Chrstmas partes. Varous companes sad that the successful hostess used ther product. One department store had four Santas on duty. Yes, t was the begnnng of the holday season. As students of a Catholc college, however, we should he aware of the true nature of ths Advent season. We should not be prematurely celebratng Chrstmas, but preparng for t accordng to our ablty. Frst Frday Ths comng Frday, December 2nd, s the Frst Frday of the month of December. All Provdence College students should take ths occason to attend Mass and receve Holy Communon. Many of us fal to realze the wonderful promses attached to makng the Frst Frdays. Here at the College these thngs are avalable to U3 at hours that are convenent to us all. Let's all make ths comng Frst Frday a memorable one by startng t wth Almghty God! "I'm Sorry, Sr" A lbraran, not the dumpy and dowdy refugee from the cartoons, but rather a welldressed woman wth an urbane sense of humor, approaches the man desk wth a dusty volume n her hand. After leadng through the pages, she asks quetly, "Are you a student?" "Yes" s the reply, a mxture of prde and presumpton. "Oh, I am sorry. You can't have the book." Ths s a scene, often re-enacted n our lbrary. To be the vctm of ths stuaton s Incomng a clam to dstncton. It sgnfes the arrval at some esoterc peak. The student has found a use for some book, so unused, that he can not use the book. But ths stuaton can be frustratng. The student s someone eager for knowledge, and the lbraran must squelch that eagerness. The book s tantalzngly passed before the vctm-student, and then removed from the grasp of hs ardent fngers. We assume that there are logcal reasons for the acton of the publc lbrary. The bass for ths assumpton s dplomatc as well as ratonal. One reason s that students may be vandals. Rather than read a book and return t, some wll read a book and remove pages for future reference. Others wll keep the book and pay a fne. Ths ncreases a personal lbrary, but depletes the stock of the publc lbrary. Another reason s that the books are old and out-of-prnt. Age does not connote worth. A book may be out-of-prnt, because t has been superseded by a more recent or more scholarly work. But t may stll be of value for the student. These are the probable reasons. Lke most rules, however, ths rule has ts loop-holes. For the sake of the student we wll lst them. Frst, the book may be used n the lbrary. Thus a student could take notes on selected passages. But ths s very mpractcal for more techncal works. One person wshed to use a Gaelc grammar, prnted n 867. The grammar had never appeared on the Best Seller Lst or a lst of the one hundred books of Western Cvlzaton, but he could not borrow the book from the lbrary. He also could not learn Gaelc grammar n twelve hours, or twelve weeks for that matter. The alternatve method s to have a smplemnded and aged frend borrow the book. The lbraran wll gladly surrender the work nto the hands of someone who does not look ntellgent enough to read the volume. Although smple-mnded people are preferred, other adults wll do. Ths rulng could be made neffectve f enough people used the methods, lsted above. If the lbrary could be made to recognze ths fact, they mght repeal the rule. Perhaps they could reassess the value of the books, now prohbted, and ncrease the number of avalable books. As t stands, the rule a kn to the many antquated and rdculous laws, whch have outlved ther usefulness. Salve, Guzmante! The Domncan pre-ecclesastcal students of Guzman Hall have once agan won the trophy for excellence n Latn awarded by the Assocaton for the Promoton of the Study of Latn. All the students of Provdence College have a rght to be proud of our Domncan students. Although we see very lttle of them, they have always been most promnent n the ntellectual and athletc lfe of the College. Ther dlgence and effort s clearly evdenced by ther extraordnary showng n A.P.S.L. exam, gven by the organzaton whch awards the trophy for exceptonal achevement n the Latn language. The COWL extends ts sncere congratulatons to the students and to ther professor, the Reverend John D. Skalko, O.P., who s n charge of the Latn program at Guzman Hall and who we feel s n no small way responsble for the success of hs students. Carry on, Guzmantes, and hold hgh the name of our College and the sacred Order of Preachers! BOOK REVIEW Durng ts desperate hours of the sprng of 864, the wanng Confederacy hastly erected n the burnng heat of Central Georga a war prson named AndersonvU*! Ths nfamous twenty acre stockade, wth practcally no provsons for santaton, water, or shelter, held a maxmum of 3000 men who were guarded by the refuse of a mltary state and commanded by an ncompetent named Henr Wrz. In ts hstory, ths jal drank the blood of more Yankee solders than the battle of Bull Run, Seven Days, Antetam, Shloh, Fredercksburg, Chckamauga, Chattanooga, and Gettysburg by war combned. Ths blemsh caused and ts effect on people s the subject of Mac- Knley Kantor's book, "Andersonvlle." Out of fragmentary records, the author has wrought an engrossng fctonal novel whch has nether a vllan nor a hero but a steady crosssecton of typcal Amercan Cvl War characters who, stamped by the embracng stan of a prson, are submerged nto an equal humanty or nhumanty of agonzed portrats not men. From the Confederate Wrz to nnocent spectators and the prsoners themselves all are subjected to de of confnement and evl. Andersonvlle was the communty of the damned. Ths November's book of the month selecton s jammed wth hundreds of short lved characters who are vewed from the varous vantage ponts; the selecton of the ste, the buldng of the stockade, the herdng n of the prsoners, the changng fortunes of the South. From the scope of prson lfe the book develops to a representaton of a panorama of the entre Cvl War. However, the prsoners themselves who are meant to represent the whole of Amercan socety domnate. There s, for example, Edward Blarney, the product of generatons of New England fshermen and the possessor of a keen eyesght, who sold hs sharp sght to the Raders for favors and got klled for hs betrayal. There s Wlle Mann of Mssour whose father, doctor, told hm that water a was the key to health and by means of ths advce saved hs own lfe and the lves of some of hs comrades by not drnkng the polluted water nsde the stockade. There s Eden Dollver of Iowa who loved brds better than men and there are many more characters whose hstory, talents, ambtons, morals, or lack of morals, are portrayed by the author who shows the tortuous struggle between ther abltes to survve and ther nevtable fate to succumb to the perls of the prson. If one has the ntestnal forttude to see men fall lke tn toys to the ravages of gangrene, dysentery, scurvy, pellagra or starvaton, the full mpact of ths novel wll strke hm. OUT OF PROPORTION By JIM SANTANIELLO went nto Paul Connolly's offce about a week ago to dg up some nformaton concernng the great basketball team of 929 the team beng honored at the frst Homecomng Weekend and learned some very amazng and amusng facts. Mr. Connolly was very helpful when I questoned hm and he gave me three pages of facts to go by... but before I begn, I would lke to voce some prase for our "Alumn Representatve." Paul s the sort of a guy that gets you nterested n becomng an alumnus when you're a freshman and keeps you n that sprt all the way through college untl the tme comes when you are an alumnus not at all lke some nstructors who make you wsh you were an alumnus so you could escape ther wrath. But to my story. As you all know, P. C. was once the power-house of Eastern basketball. She had a representatve on practcally every year's All-Amercan team. Ths s a fact. What my story s concerned wth today s an ncdent that was somewhat hdden from hstorcal record, the tme that the great and fabulous team of '29 almost ddn't play. In those days, a much dfferent type of basketball was used. It was a lopsded sort of ball wth laces on the sde; learnng to drbble t was an art n tself. A player would be drbblng down court when suddenly the ball would land on the protrudng laces and bounce off n the least suspected drecton. The trck to successful drbblng, therefore, was to keep the laces face-up. It has here that P. C. excelled. Now durng the weeks pror to the 929 season, a great deal of anxety had been bult up around the fact that the team had only one decent enough ball wth whch to play n compettve endeavors. Ths meant that that ball had to be closely guarded and well kept f the team wanted ther usual unbeaten season. Two men were assgned the sngular task of polshng t daly. Meanwhle, back at the gym, the team was usng balloons to practce wth. They were gong through the motons of a regular drll one cold late- Fall afternoon when the eghth successve balloon drfted up to the gym celng and refused to obey the law of gravty. Edde Wneapple, who went on to make All-Amercan, gave out a ferce, frghtenng, and frustrated yell, raced over to Larry Wheeler, the team captan, and n an an mpassve voce, demanded that the team use real basketballs when they practced. Realzng that tenson was mountng, Larry succeeded n gettng permsson to use the real ball durng the three practces before the openng game. The frst day, all went well. The team was happy and clcked wth the precson of the Harlem Globetrotters. That nght, the basketball was washed wth saddle soap, polshed, and placed n a specally heated contaner su the leather wouldn't crack. The next day, the team sparkled as no Provdence team had sparkled before. If they could play the whole season n just half that form, they were sure to have the greatest team ever to run up and down a basketball court. Agan that nght, the ball was washed wth saddle soap, polshed, and placed n the specally heated contaner. But the next day was almost dsastrous. It was the day before the openng game and sprts were hgh. The team had just fnshed ts warmup exercses when the coach decded to have a full game scrmmage. Wneapple was to head the "green-shrts" and Wheeler, the "no-shrts". The game was thrllng to watch and was gong along pretty well when suddenly Larry managed to steal the ball from Wneapple and score two very mportant ponts. Ths put the "no-shrts" n front, 50 to 48. Always game for a good scrap, Edde took the ball down court drbblng handsomely as he worked hs way around man after man of the "green-shrts". He was just comng n for a fancy lay-up when the ball bounced on the laces, scurred off n a reverse drecton, and stopped dead about ten feet away. Wheeler and Wneapple dved for the ball smultaneously and landed, Larry on top of the ball. A tremendous exploson, and when they arose, the ball was as flat as an opened bottle of beer a week old. Horror flled the mnds of all concerned. All knew the mportance of that ball. The two dscples of care that had been n charge of the ball quckly took t away. Fevershly, they tore the lace away and examned the bladder wthn the basketball. It was splt rght down the mddle; repar seemed mpossble. But Wneapple, n a moment of nspraton, came up wth a day-savng dea. Wthout dscussng what he had n mnd, he put hs robe on and ran out of the gym. Ten mnutes later, he returned wth a small bag n hs hand. Sheepshly, he ran over to a corner of the gym and, sheldng hs actons, took out the contents of the bag. Laborously, he labored over the damaged ball. Then, wth the buoyant happness of a lttle lad, he turned trumphantly wth the basketball n perfect form. It was round as round could be, but he wouldn't dvulge what he had done. Naturally, they won the openng game and t was here that that now common expresson was born... the vctory was "n the bag". In Passng By Dave Pepn Ths comng weekend Provdence College wll jon the long lst of colleges that celebrate an annual Homecomng Weekend. It wll be the frst n the hstory of the college. It wll be qute dfferent from the frst homecomng whch was celebrated at Hale Unversty. It was the branstorm of Paul Yarvard, the head of the alumn at that tme. It was n the year 803 when Paul frst conceved the dea to sponsor an annual event, not only to old acquantances, but also, to renew have the alumn meet the student body. After conferrng wth the presdent of the college, a Dctor Mston, they decded to arrange a rugby match between Hale and Rnceton Unversty as a hghlght of the weekend. A gala (Contnued on Page 6) Nebulous Notons Perhaps t's a good thng that the gymnasum wasn't bult to contan a hockey arena. Wth only four or fve home games ths year, t wouldn't have been worth the trouble... Optmsts are nclned to beleve that the Voce of Provdence College wll once agan be heard ths week. Dan Walsh, the Presdent of the Student Body, has announced that all offcers of organzatons holdng affars on Campus, are responsble and wll be held accountable for, the enforcement of all school and congress regulatons and laws regardng such affars. One of the major d-awbacks of the plan was that t provded no equtable means of dstrbuton to workng grls Two suggestons were made to allevate ths: the frst beng that hey could be dstrbuted through the Junor Ver dames, and the other that they could be dstrbuted at the door The latter, however, drew heavy fre from many members of the Congress who felt that t would be embarrassng to grls to have to prove ther age at the door Several representatves who opposed the plan ndcated that they would be wllng to support t f senor hgh school grls were admtted. Ths was opposed by others who felt that t would pave the way lor the younger onej and eventually defeat the purpose of the bll. A test vote n the Contre** showed that the sentment of the members was evenly dvded pro and con. Most of the Congressmen recognzed the exstence of the problem and realzed that somethng should be done to elmínale the stuaton, but were dsagreed as to the best means of accomplshng ths. The bll has been referred to the Legslatve Commttee for study Commttee Charman Dan Harrngton has announced that he wll hold hearngs on (he measure and anyone nterested s free to attend and express hs vews The Congress also passed a bll prohbtng the ncluson oí nactve clubs' n the Vertas. The act was passed wth only two dssentng votes and was sgned nto law by Presdent Walsh. Among the major campus organzatons affected s WDOM. the college rado staton. Although the staton has functoned nfrequently n the past few years, ths has not always been the faull of the staton tself, snce t has experenced transmsson dffcultes and stll s n need of an adequate room. Nevertheless, several Congressmen felt that t should not be ncluded n the yearbook unless t s functonng n the very near future. One spokesman ponted out that, "t would be foolsh to nclude the COWL f t never put out an ssue, the Pyramd Players f they never put on a producton, and everyone would certanly be up n arms f the Congress were ncluded and never held a meetng or performed any of ts governmental functons," It was announced ths week, by Presdent Walsh that Club Presdents wll be held responsble for any and all volatons of rules, regardng campus socal functons. The Presdents are lable to prosecuton n the Student Court for falure to enforce them. A PRIVILEGE It s a prvlege for the student body of ths nsttuton to be admtted to some practce sessons. 4 4 THF COWL NOVEMBER 30, 955 Presentng By John Hannon specal College, Through thck and thn, wthout one comes, to the new modern and gfts and endowments, Provdence College has beautfully desgned Albertus Magnus Hall, made ts way to a peak that was not dreamed home of the scence student.
