2 Morehead Beat / Settng The Pace n A Progressve Era / 'N Student Publcaton of Eastern Kentucky Unversty Vol. No. 50 ssue No. 13 through graduate students ncludng both males and females. The survey covered all forms of cheatng ncludng the copyng of answers from tests, preparng to cheat durng a test, plagarsm, and the stealng of tests. t was also lmted to cheatng durng the students' college experence. Whle the survey cannot be taken as representatve of the entre campus, two out of three of the students surveyed had cheated n some form or other whle at Eastern. Though ths may seem lke a large percentage, ths survey correlates wth a survey on college cheatng done by the Bureau of Appled Research at Columba Unversty. n ths survey taken of 99 colleges and unverstes nearly one-half of the 5,000 students ntervewed had cheated. Cheatng also was more (Contnued On Page Ten) BY BOYDKDWELL Ant-ROTC Day pettons, legal room searches, and a suggeston that seven bcycles racks be constructed headed the busness at Student Senate on Tuesday. Berge feels that the Senate s n need of reshufflng n order to more equally balance the representatonal system. Hs commttee s studyng the stuaton. Average Teachers Salares Are Not Keepng Up Wth Cost Of Lvng t YUMA.. FRANCS Academcs Edtor The" salary of the average teacher has less buyng power today than ever. Last year, for the fourth constectufve year, the purchasng power of faculty salares lagged far behnd the ncreasng cost of lvng salares were frozen durng the Natonal Wage-Prce Freeze. Economc status of the teachng professon was one of "standstll and eroson." Most colleges and unverstes determne pay scale by rank. " The frst fve years, as an nstructor or assstant professor, one mght receve as much as a sx percent ncrease. ncrease s Kxpecled The second fve years as an assocate professor, a four percent ncrease could be expected. The next 15 years as a full professor, ths drops to an estmated three percent per annum, whle the remanng years to retrement are marked by zero or an nsgnfcant percentage ncrease. A com mom problem beng faced today J>y teachers and nsttutonal admnstratons concerns the "utlzaton of captal avalable for frnge benefts. T These benefts nclude retrement, dsablty, medcal and hosptal nsurance and lfe nsurance. Despte the advantages of benefts pad out of the money before taxes are mposed, the ndvduals and nsttutons are stll payng for them out of money that mght concevably be used for salary ncreases, accordng to Commttee Z of the Amercan Assocaton of Unversty Professors. f the captal was dstrbuted drectly n an overall salary ncrease, ndvduals could then purchase, on ther own, those servces prevously lsted as frnge benefts whch they deem necessary to them, the commttee contends. At Eastern last year, the salary dstrbuton wth all ranks combned was as follows: The hgh quota was $13,800, the medant quota was $12,000 wth a low quota of $10,900. Comparatvely, durng the academc year at UK, the hgh quota was $17,100, the medant quota $14,000 and the low quota, $12,000. Kastern Seemngly Underpad At a glance t may seem that Eastern s grossly underpayng ts faculty as compared to UK. Thursday, November 16, 1972 Petton, Searches, Racks, Hghlght Senate Agenda Survey ndcates 70 Percent Cheat "f he'd just move hs hand over a lttle, could see. Just a lttle... There, the answer s (a) for number 10. Now for number 11. Oops! s that Dr. Yernoff lookng at me. He's startng ths way. What f he saw me! He's stll walkng ths way. Oh, God, why dd look that last tme. f get out of ths 'll never cheat agan. Never! Keep cool. f my hand would stop shakng maybe he'd go on by. He's slowng down -- now 've had t. Whew, what a relef! He walked on by..now f that guy would just move hs hand could see the answer to number 11...". The young man above could be one of a number of EKU students. n a survey taken of K4 students, approxmately 70 percent of the students had cheated snce enterng college. The 24 non-cheaters represent only 28.5 percent of the total polled whch ncluded all types of students from freshmen 10 Pages However, Eastern's salares are more evenly dstrbuted than those at UK. There s $5,100 dfference between the hgh quota and the low quota at UK, whle there s only $2,900 dfference between the two at Eastern. There s a dfference of $1,800 between the hgh quota and the medant or average salary at EKU, whle at UK, there s $3,000 dfference between hgh quota and medant. Wthn the UK communty college system, the hgh quota s $9,800, the medant $9,000 and the low $8,200. Ths consttutes a dfference of $7,200 between the hgh quota at UK and the hgh quota n ts outlyng communty colleges. There s no salary dscrepancy n the Rchmond Communty College because t s a drect branch of Eastern, wth the same faculty. "An nsttuton n the busness of developng doctoral programs should not be gven the prmary responsblty for communty college educaton throughout the state," sad Glen Klene, assocate professor of journalsm. "t nevtably gves preferred treatment to ts prestgous doctoral programs and gves secondary attenton to ts communty college responsbltes." Seem To Support The faculty salares for comparable ranks at the Unversty of Kentucky and the UK communty colleges seem to support ths contenton." Concernng salares pad to Eastern professors, a member of the Englsh department sad, "t's enough for me. 'm one of the poorest pad, but 've worked for half of what get now." Dr. Lesle Ramsdell, assstant professor of health educaton sad, "salares here are not much dfferent from anywhere else. They are comparable to those n Tennessee and West Vrgna." n other places, faculty members have to pay as much as $25 for the rght to park on campus. Here, we don't have to pay. t may be a lttle thng, but lttle thngs add up." Kentucky s Behnd A member of the poltcal scence department who preferred to reman anonymous stated, "Kentucky s somewhat behnd, but we aren't as far behnd as some...tax base, number of schools n state and number of people beng educated-all those thngs have to be consdered." Concernng her reason for gong nto educaton despte ts low salares, Jenny Hardn, a junor musc educaton major sad, " thought about t (salary), but not much." " guess f thought 'd have to support myself for the rest of my lfe mght have thought more about t, but 'm hopng won't have to." " wanted to go nto musc and educaton was the logcal place for me to be." Jacke Dunn, sophomore lbrary scence major sad, " gave more thought to enjoyng my work than to the money nvolved." "Ths school s geared toward educaton, Also, most grls consder t a back-up feld for marrage. t's a fantastc feld once you get nto t. You can't get bored n t," sad Nancy Crowley, junor specal educaton and elementary educaton major. don't thnk anyone thnks of the money. 'm n the feld manly because enj»y t." Among the vstors were a group crculatng a petton whch accordng to Steve Rowland, a student senator, already had a hundred sgnatures. The group was pettonng to have ths Saturday's R.O.T.C. day postponed due to Governor Ford's proclamaton settng Saturday, November 18, 1972, as a day to honor and remember our Prsoners of War and our Mssng n Acton n Vet Nam. The petton stated that a show of mltary force cm the football feld ths Saturday would not be the proper way of rememberng the P.O.W.s and the M..A.'s. Rowland then brought the petton before the senate for endorsement. After a heated debate and a close vote, the senate voted not to endorse t. The senate dd vote to support a perod of slence for the mssng men and to provde black armbands to be worn by all nterested people n honor of our P.O.W.'s and M..A's. On the subject of student rghts Lee Edgngton reported that he had gone over the housng contract wth lawyers and room searchers are completely legal. He sad that the contract clearly stated the unversty's poston and after a student sgned the contract only a change n admnstraton polcy could stop them. Edgngton also reported that Lbrary Hours Announced The John Grant Crabbe Lbrary on campus has announced ts hours of operaton for the Thanksgvng weekend. The lbrary wll be open Wednesday, November 22 from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m., closed Thursday, Frday and Saturday and wll reopen Sunday afternoon at 2 p.m. The lbrary wll close Sunday nght at the usual tme, 10:30 p.m., accordng to Ernest E. Weyhrauch, Drector of Lbrares at Eastern. the Grll n the basement of the Powell Buldng wll be open untl 1 a.m. Frday and Saturday of ths weekend and student partcpaton wll determne f the Grll can do suffcent busness to afford to reman open later on a regular bass. Larry Cleveland presented a report by the Bcycle Commttee whch stated that, as of now the Commttee s recommendng that bke racks be placed at seven stes on campus. Cleveland further reported that the commttee was tryng to get more racks, partcularly around the classroom buldngs. One problem the commttee has encountered s that some admnstraton offcals do not want the racks where they wll be notcable. Cleveland noted that the commttee wll meet agan ths Monday to try to fnd more solutons to the bke rack problems. n other acton the Senate unanmously voted to send a letter to Dean ngels n support of open hours for the women of Clay and McGregor Halls. Varous members of the Senate stated that due to the great percentage of yes votes on the questonare recently crculated n the two dorms specal recognton should be gven towards helpng these dorms get open hours. The senate also reaffrmed ts postve stand towards open hours for all women Senate Examnes Selecton Process BY JANET AYDT "The goals of the student senate are to represent as many people as possble as farly as possble'' testfed student senator Danny Stratton durng an open hearng of the student senate commttee on reapportonment Tuesday nght. The commttee, a sub commttee of the Student Rghts Commttee, was formed at the request of Student Assocaton Presdent Chuck Kelhoffer for the purpose of "fndng a better way to select student senators for far and equal student representaton." Under the exstng system the senate s composed of two representatves from all classes except the freshmen whch has four and the graduate school whch has one; one representatve from each organzaton recognzed by the Unversty; one from Brockton; one for commuters; and representatves at large elected for each 1,000 students and parts thereof as specfed n the Student Assocaton consttuton. A flaw n ths system s that a small club such as P Omega P wth 13 members has just as much votng power as a much larger club such as the Republcan club wth 648 members. Senor class senator Lee Edgngton proposed reapportonment of the student populaton nto dstrcts wth one senator representng approxmately 250 students. Danny Stratton, senator representng Kappa ota Epslon, presented a smlar plan but based hs dstrcts on lvng areas. Under Stratton's plan each dorm, Brockton, commuters, and other off campus students would have one representatve for each 100 people and one representatve for any people over ffty. For nstance, Telford Hall wth 618 students would have sx representatves whle Burnam wth 299 would have three. Senator-at-Large Steve Salde proposed that the commttee nvestgate the possblty of a faculty student senate such as the Unversty of Kentucky has. Under ths plan the student body would be dvded nto colleges. A student would be represented by the senators from hs college. Mke Ray, representatve of Todd-Dupree comples, expressed concern over any of those reapportonment plans whch would not nclude vested nterest groups such as fraterntes, sorortes, and clubs. The commttee wll hold another open hearng at 8:30 tonght n the Kennamer Room of the Powell Buldng. t wll be open to pro and con suggestons from students. Commttee members are Robert Burdge,Charman; Kay Whte, and Dave Stratton. Wth ths as foundaton there s lttle wonder why As Students, We Should Be Grateful blessngs go unrecognzed, much less uncounted. At ths pont n the semester the emnent fnal exams, a shortage of Chrstmas spendng money, general fatgue and a lack of enthusasm characterze the general mass of the campus communty. f only we pause and thnk for a moment, a brght sde can be seen. We ought to consder t a prvledge to have fnals to worry about. Half of the world's populaton has no chance for an educaton. And t's a well worn clche, but lterally half the four bllon humans n the world go to bed hungryand that's not 'cause the nearby grll s Bypass Lght Snarls Traffc Durng Late Afternoon Hours The traffc stuaton durng late afternoon hours has become ncreasngly worse at the stoplght located on the Eastern Bypass near Keene Hall. Wth the major porton of faculty, staff and commuter students departng for home combned wth the area workers that get off work about the same tme, the stoplght, whch was nstalled to provde safety for pedestran traffc, s becomng a snarl for motor vehcles. The lght was nstalled last sprng after about a year of study by the Department of Hghways and has been valuable as a safety feature due to the ncrease of traffc on the Bypass.. But s a red lght needed at that pont twenty-four hours a day. Ask For Flashng Lght n a May, 1971 meetng of the Board of Regents, a recommendaton to the Departmentt of Hghways was approved askng "that a flashng lght be placed at the crosswalk on the Eastern Bypass at Keene Hall." Later that month the Commssoner of Hghways jfras asked to consder measures to "mprove safety condtons for pedestrans crossng the road. The man measure asked for was a flashng lght to be placed at the approprate locaton on the Bypass warnng drvers that pedestrans are crossng the crosswalk at Keene Hall. Rather than nstallng a flashng lght the Hghway Department put n a stoplght, whch s a good dea, but as an ad for lessenng conjeston the stoplght should be swtched to a >' flashng yellow lght after a certan tme n the day. At the present tme cars can be seen backed up from the ntersecton to the Colseum entrance around 4:30-5 p.m. Our thnkng s that the flashng lght would provde suffcent safety for the students. As of now many students dsregard the lght. Pedestran Traffc Heavest Pedestran traffc travelng to and from Keene seems to be between the hours of 7:30 a.m. and 2 p.m. A suggeston would be to use the stoplght between these hours because of the greater number of pedestrans and then at 2 p.m. put the lght on cauton untl the next mornng. Ths would drastcally reduce the traffc problem n the afternoon and the students would stll have a reasonable amount of protecton at all tmes. And whle on ths subject the need for a contnuous stoplght at the corner of Lancaster Avenue and Crabbe Street could be questoned whle Crabbe s blocked off for constructon of the Jane Campbell Fne Arts Buldng. The bulk of traffc at that ntersecton s between 7 a.m. and 5 p.m. n the evenng hours the use of ether Crabbe Street or the Alumn House parkng lot s mnmal and a cauton sgnal at nght would suffce. Perhaps-these deas are too much n accord wth today's fast-movng socety where everyone has someplace to go and not enough tme to get there. Maybe people want to slow the pace down and stoplghts wll certanly slow thngs down, but so wll a cauton sgnal. On top of our preoccupaton wth the negatve, we are quckly becomng a socety less wllng to extend our blessngs to others. An Amercan journalst noted last year that U.S. ctzens contrbuted 22 percent less to charty n 1970 than they had n 1960, ncludng the adjustments made for ncome changes and nflaton. n '71, Amercans spent $105 bllon on lesure and gave $8 bllon to the church (all demonnatojs ncluded). We should be gvng thanks for the stuatons we face...and maybe, just maybe, passng on our feelngs of grattude. The majorty of the world would be more than glad to have our problems-our decsons to make. n the mdst of so much good fortune we often have eyes only for what dsapponts us. The Psalms remnd us that t s good to gve thanks. Lfe tself s a gft from God. Let us be truly grateful and celebrate the gft of lfe. Dear Edtor, would lke to brng to your attenton, and the attenton of everyone else who s a part of ths campus, the fact that Eastern Kentucky Unversty s evdently playng ts part n the envronmental crss-that of pollutng the ar. Thursday, October 19, as crossed from the Unversty Center buldng to the Wallace Buldng, saw a phenomena occur that s natve to Los Angeles, Detrot, New York Cty- and other large, ndustral ctes. Here at EKU- our very own smokestack to the heatng faclty was feedng thck black smoke nto the ar. Normally, smoke wll rse, but that partcular day was dfferent. Due to nverson, the smoke was not able to rse. t drfted past me at street level n the drecton of Commonwealth Hall. The odor was horrendous,-and the thought of nhalng whatever posonous substances were n the smoke was offensve. understand also, that some of the boys at Commonwealth Hall ended up wth wndows that needed washng. The frst step to the envronmental crss s awareness; people must be aware of mpendng dangers and what s causng the danger. What better place s there to start-than on a college campus. Ar polluton here n Rchmond s not yet a bg problem. Unfortunately we do not recognze a problem untl t s to late. Eastern has a good chance now to be an example to the growng ndustry of ths communty, by applyng whatever means necessary to allevate the smoke emsson from the heatng faclty. Melssa Vlek Feffer 306. THNK: Campus Counselng Center Wll Lsten To Students' Problems Nght, that s when t s the worst. All the problems and worres whch you were successful n avodng durng the day come back to haunt you. At nght, when t s quet, you le n your bed starng at the celng and all those unpleasant lttle nocturnal thoughts batter your bran wth the speed and repetton of a machne gun. The frst thought flashes nto your mnd and before you even stumble upon any solutons the second and thrd come zerong n untl youre flled wth frustratons and worres for whch you can fnd no soluton. The problems can be mnute or nsurmountable but each one eats away at you and no matter how you try they always come back. Our frantc socety demands from us, snap decsons and all too often we are told that "you have to be quck to get and stay ahead." Ths s probably felt most by college students. You know that n ths "sheepskn socety" of^urs, you have to have a college educaton to get the "good" jobs. So, for four years or so you worry about. gettng the dploma so you can n turn worry about gettng a job, and then f you do become employeed you can worry about keepng the job. n the meantme you also have the usual "self-confrontatons" who are you? Who do you want to be? and what do you want to do? wll yot be a success or a falure? Then When t gets to where you can count the weeks left n the semester on one hand, you begn to wonder whether you wll pass that requred course, have enough money for the semester and those monthly car payments or rase that grade pont n order to stay n school. MATS A WM tf> TV em? 1 tu me A ATTACK.} r»> tg Well you could talk to someone, but frankly, who wants to hear more problems. Many of us have lttle tme to consder our own problems let alone those of someone else. The same conversaton can be heard n every hallowed hall on campus. For every problem the other person has you have two and vce versa. Then another problem arses, does anyone care? Ths may come hard to beleve but there are people who have devoted themselves to lstenng and advsng all those muddled mnds. There are four such people on ths campus, n Ellendale Hall to be exact. The counselors are not lke another student. They wo'n't walk away, they wll not match you problem for problem. They wll lsten and advse. They cannot solve all your problems, you have to do that, but they can help you and wll. The counselng servce has yet to turn anyone away. So many of us are eager to complan about many thngs that the school does npt gve us and at the same tme so reluctant to recognze the benefcal servces offered us and even more, take advantage of them. Thngs are not as bad as they often seem, but you have to fnd that out for yourself. Ellendale counselng servce also offers a crss nterventon servce for mmedate counselng and may also be used for makng appontments wth the counselors. There's no doubt that the counselng servce s dong ts job. Now you have to do yours, you have to make the frst move. All you have to do s reach-out, they wll be there and they wll help. 4 B TM am THE EASTERN PROGRESS-Thursday, November 16, 1972-Page 3 Lvely Acton / 'Servant 9 Keeps Audence 'Wth t 9 BY RON WOLFE Guest Wrter The Unversty Players' producton of A Servant of Two Masters now playng n Edwards Audtorum of Model Lab School wll be a new experence for most Eastern theater goers. t s a stylzed producton by a group of enthusastc students who brng to the comeda dell' arte form a polsh that does justce to a great deal of hard work and good drecton. Lke any producton, Servant has ts hghs and lows, but for the most part, t s a lvely play that keeps the audence "wth t" durng almost every scene. From the very begnnng when the troupe strolls down the asles to the stage, the stero effect of the voces and musc prepares the audence for a relaxed humorous jaunt through the annals of the commeda dell' arte, a dramatc art form taken from the talan theater whch n Goldon's producton features players wth masks. From the frst scene, the costumes stand out as a major contrbuton to the overall success of the play. Ther meretrcous ar helps to renforce the bawdy flavor whch often comes out n the play and the psychologcal effect of the bold colors no doubt contrbutes to the audence's nvolvement wth the characters. Character becomes the most mportant element, and one character, Truffaldno, the servant, steals the show so completely at tmes, the others almost hestate to get n the act. Mke Morgan s excellent as the servant who tres to make a lttle money by seryjng twa masters, and ends up gettng, nto a.jpto Rouble hmself. Hs geometrc costume reflects the nfntessmal angles of hs personalty as he draws the audence wth hm at every turn. Veteran Trca Perry shows a comedy flar n her role as Clarce, the beautful daughter of Pantalone, who s promsed to one man but wants another. She s expressve, pretty, and spoled to the pont of sheer delght. The experence that comes wth performng was obvous n Bob Butler who played Dottore, the father of one of Clarce's lovers. Unlke some of hs counterparts, he "acted" when he dd not have lnes, on and off the stage. Vck Wolfe does a credtable job af Federgo and Beatrce. She never forgot that she was Federgo when she was hm, and she was femnne when she became Beatrce later. She s lvng proof, however, that even the most dedcated and experenced players can forget lnes. Good performances were also turned n by Crag Parker as Brghella, the nnkeeper, who exaggerated tones weren't always consstent wth the character he was tryng to be and Steve Wagner as Florndao, Beatrce's lover whose beautful hat sometmes cast a gant shadow over hs eyes and made the audence wonder whether he was really under there or not. Durng the ntal scences, Florndo wats for the words to come; n later scenes he s more convncng. Pantalone, Clarce's father, was at tmes the most and least convncng character on stage. Hs jttery mannersms were no doubt n order, but he was almost too ef f emnnate at tmes to make anyone beleve that he could have fathered a daughter. Bob Roach as Slvo, the lover n queston, left a great deal to be desred although he looked the part. A law enforcement major and wrestler turned actor, Bob's lnes were sometmes muffled as he turned hs back on the audence; hs forced dcton was not always clear and he was generally too stff to ft the relaxed commeda dell' arte mood. The fnal major character, Smeraldna, the mad, played by Mary Baldwn, had her ups and downs dramatcally. Her mumbled lnes make her shallow and unconvncng although n Scene 3, Act, she gves a good account of her talent. The major characters, costumes, and stagng all make the play an enjoyable evenng. t s a credtable producton of a dramatc form whch s relatvely unknown, drected by a hand wth a cultvated hstronc sense, and performed by some perseverng young people who don't rval the June Taylor Dancers when they close the producton, but who present a play defntely worth seeng. :' 4 Photos By Jm Shepherd HERE MEMBERS of the cast of A Servant of Two Masters perform three scenes from Goldon's commeda dell' arte comedy. Durng ths expermentaton perod, he made two country albums, soon to be re-released. He descrbed these albums as not beng "pseudo-country," but havng some bluegrass, and "natural musc." About three years ago, Nelson sad, he began wrtng songs serously, after startng the Stone Canyon Band. " just fgured f wanted to make a full commtment to musc and everythng then 'd really have to jump n and do t and wrte songs." Wrtng songs, however, s a scary thng to Nelson. Wth me there's no formula. wsh there was." He spoke enthusastcally of hs new album, "Garden Party," whch wll be released n a week or two. He sad he s "very happy wth the songs that are on there." He also hopes album sales wll ncrease as a result of the ht record (the ttle song of the album.) "We put n so much tme and effort. WlHS THE EASTERN PROGRESS-Thursday, November 16, 1972-Page 5 Students Start Job Hunt Wth Placement Offce BY BKTSKY BELL Feature Edtor As the semester comes to a close many students, especally senors fnd themselves wonerng where they wll seek jmployment. One place they nght begn to look would be the jlacement servce. Located on he thrd floor of the Jones wldng the Placement Servce jets as a lason between jrospectve employers and students. The success of the Placement Servce n fndng employment for students s hard to determne accordng to Mr. John Vckers. "There s no way n the world to get people to nform us when they have a job. They forget about t once they've graduated and started workng." He added, "The only way we can fnd out s when we call them for prospectve jobs and they tell us that they already have one." Vckers sad that one of the problems s gettng students to fll out fles at the Placement Offce. "t has not been a problem wth those students n educaton because we are able to meet wth student teachers at the begnnng of each semester n ther fundamentals classes." He explaned that wth other majors t s dffcult fndng classes where they are all together. "We do not have the opportunty to mpress t upon them." n tryng to solve ths problem Vckers explaned, "We try to mpress the mportance of fllng out fles upon the deans and department heads so that they may take the nformaton to the teachers n the dfferent majors." The Placement Servce states that 51 n state schools came to Eastern to ntervew students, whle 35 n state non-educaton employers and 19 out of state worked through the offce. Vckers added that the number of employers to come to Eastern has been declnng over the past two and a half years. Accordng to the Placement Servce fgures, to date there are 370 graduates seekng jobs, 483 are employed n educaton, 214 n professonal felds, 27 n the armed servces and 75 are contnung ther educaton. Fgures from last year also state that only one thrd of the graduates were regsterd wth the placement servce, totallng 778 and the number of students not regstered was Vckers sad that he receves few complants from vstng employers. "The only objecton s that students sometmes do not have ther credentals on fle." He added that the qualty of the students was always spoken of by the prospectve employers, and that "on the most part the employers have been very complmentary." He cted as an example the Woolworth Company ntervewed eght students and offered seven of them jobs. "That s rare." stated Vckers. Vckers sad that sometmes prospectve employers do not work through the Placement Servce. He sad that some have mantaned drect contact wth the departments such as ARDOT HHMMONHLAW CABN" c»s??r' nursng and law enforcement. He sad however that most employers refran from contactng each dfferent department because "most employers contact on a central place. Many need people n dfferent felds and t s easer for them to work through us." He stated that some of the employers have become strcter n who they ntervew. "Some schools just want to talk to those n the upper ffty per cent of the class. A few years ago they would take anyone they could get." He added that even though there has been a surplus of teachers, many schools stll come to the campus but that many now feel that there s not a great need n recrutng. Vckers Ttated that the employment has defntely leveled off. "As far as an ncrease n jobs there hasn't been any and f. anythng we have ndcatons that there wll be fewer employers comng to Eastern ths year than ever before. He dd state however that the Placement Servce s able to place a "great percentage of graduates." He added that ' many are not employed because they are restrcted to a certn area due to marrage and other reasons. As advce, Vckers sad that senors should have fles regstered n the Placement offce as early n the year as possble. He sad that the Placement Servce has books lstng employers both n educaton and professonal felds. (E&gether, 3 NO ONE UNDER ADMTTED ^MtlM. The strng of close defeats and njures that have plagued the Colonels all year long fnally took ts toll last Saturday. n a game aganst Appalachan State whch meant almost nothng more than prde, the team just collapsed and got trounced Why dd the Colonels, and especally, the prevously tough defense get whpped so badly? Well, don't really know. Snce the game ddn't mean anythng, and Coach Kdd sad afterwards that the team wasn't up for t, one mght accuse thenm of lack of effort. Only the players themselves really know for sure how much they put out, though, and accordng to a relable member of our staff ( wasn't there myself) the Colonels tred as hard, f not harder, n ths game as n any other. What t bols down to, probably, s that a team that s only a fracton of what t was at the start of the season met ts toughtest opponent at the worst possble tme. Anyway, that one's over wth. The Colonels have only one game left, and of course that's wth Morehead here ths Saturday. The Eagles are n about the same knd of mess the Colonels are n. They've had a dsappontng season too, and mostly because of a rash of njures. Thngs have been so rough for these two teams that Morehead coach Roy Terry suggested that nstead of playng the game, all the players on crutches should lne up n the mddle of the feld and start smashng each other wth them, wth the last team havng a man standng up declared the wnner. Ths game means nothng to ether team except prde, snce nether one has any hope left of any champonshp or even a wnnng season. DAN MALONEY TOM FNDLEY Qualfy For NCAA Natonal Meet ROBLEE \ BY JOHN NELSON Whether or not the Colonels wn or lose every other game of the season, the yearly battle aganst Morehead s looked forward to the most. Perhaps the hottest rvalry n the OVC, the Eastern-Morehead game ths Saturday at 1:30 p.m. on Hanger Feld should be an nterestng one. Eastern could be down ths week as they have suffered fve straght losses, the last one hurtng the most. The other four losses were thought to be possbly due to the njures of runnng back Alfred Thompson and end Larry Krksey; however, both were present aganst Appalachan State as the Colonels were crushed Ths was the worst defeat Eastern has suffered snce Experence About Equal Morehead has a conference standng of and an overall of as compared to EKU's OVC record of and overall of Both teams rate about the same when t comes to experence. Morehead lost 20 players to graduaton and 10 of them were starters; yet, they stll started the season wth at least one letterman n 21 of the 22 startng postons. The Eagles lke Eastern have also been plagued wth njures ths season, and they have three starters out for the year. These njures took place over a perod of less than a month. Frst, Ken Hass, senor lnebacker and leadng tacker was carred off the feld aganst Tennessee Tech wth a knee njury. Then sophomore talback Frank Jones was called on to replace Jmmy Johnson who was also sdelned for the year. Johnson was thought of as one of the OVC's best runners and was leadng the league n kckoff returns. Fnally, defensve tackle Mark Sheehan was benched permanently wth a knee njury. Schaetzke Leads Offense The apple of Morehead's football eye s junor quarterback Dave Schaetzke. He s now leadng the OVC n total offense wth 1257 total yards and an average of yards per game. Of these 1257, 841 of them are from passng. Schaetzke who stands 6-1 and weghs 180 pounds, was an All-OVC player n hs frst two seasons and he s tryng to repeat as the league's total offense leader. Ths game wll mark the fnal home appearance for Eastern's eght senor players. They are Wally Chambers, James Croudep, Larry Kaeln, Jacke Mller, Joe Washngton, Tom Red, Mke Ncholson, and Larry Krksey. Chambers, a 250 pound defensve tackle from Mt. Clemens, Mchgan, has been a tower of strength on the defensve lne for three seasons. He's been named frst team all OVC and stands a good chance of earnng that award agan ths season. The women take the same coursers as the men except that they wll not be requred to take marksmanshp tranng or bear arms. A Mltary Polce Program s also new at Eastern ths year. The program complements Eastern's Law Enforcement School by provdng the Law Enforcement cadet addtonal tranng n mltary polce actvtes and a commsson n the MP Corps. Ths program benefts the ndvdual by provdng hm a job n hs feld of tranng and area of nterest. t also benefts the Army by provdng better qualfed MP Offcers. The Two-Year Army ROTC Program offers college men the opportunty to be commssoned as Second Leutenants after only two years of on-campus ROTC tranng. To take advantage of ths opportunty the students attend a sx-weeks basc summer camp aftertner sophomore year and complete the Advanced Course n ther junor and senor years. n the Advanced Course cadets are pad $100 per month for up to ten months of the school year. Sophomores who want to attend camp ths comng summer need to apply before 1 December 1972 n Room 513 or 519, Begley Buldng. 10 Humor Made Camp Lfe Bearable Geology Student Accompanes Expedton Calm At Nght... Jm Mason, senor from Pant Lck, has returned from partcpatng n the Juneau ce Feld Research Program sponsored by Mchgan State Unversty. The research took place on a glacer about 20 mles from Juneau. Alsak. Jm was able to accompany the expedton becuase of a scholarshp obtaned from Mchgan State Unversty. Dr. Nchols of EKU asssted Jm n obtanng ths scholarshp and Dr. Maynard Mller of Mchgan State was the drector of the program. Mason qualfed for a scholarshp because he s a geology major and has done study n the feld of morphology, the study of land forms. Mason sad "The purpose of the expedton was to gve the students an opportunty to study glacers n a feld stuaton and to lve n a camp envronment. The expedton contaned Photo by Larry Baley members from dfferent branches of scence. Bologsts, meteorologsts and geologsts combned to study the glacers. The scentsts measured dscharge from melted glacers, last year's layer of snow and ce, and stragraphy, a study of beddng of ce and snow. Of partcular nterest to the party was ablaton or meltng of the glacers. Several meteorologcal studes were made to correlate the nfluence of weather on the glacer ablaton. Jm was most concerned wth studyng the bedrock, petrology and geojogy of the nunmataks. These nunmataks are slands of rock whch protude from the glacers. Nunmataks s the Greenland Eskmo word for these slands. The scentsts were on the glacer from late June untl the last week of August. They lved n small tent-huts on the nunmataks where temperatures were n the twentes and the wnds gusted to 60 m.p.h. The man group fluctuated from 30 to 50 campers but ths body was broken down nto small camps of two or three people. Often Jm lved for a week on one of these slands wth only one other person. Jm sad that ths bothered some people but he found the work was so nterestng and kept hm so nvolved that he really dd not get lonely. The menu conssted manly of canned or dehydrated food. All of the supples had to be arlfted whch added 40 cents to the prce of each pound of supples brought n. There were no serous accdents on the expedton but some whteouts dd occur. Whteouts occur because of ffog on the glacer. The whte on whte effect destroys depth percepton. After 20 mnutes of whteout a candy wrapper may look lke a nunmatuck complete wth camp. One man a flock of brds as though they were army of solders. To others an empty cgarette package looked lke a snowmoble. Humor dd a great deal to make camp lfe bearable. Accordng to Jm, f nothng funny occurred from tme to tme the days became very long. One young bologst became very excted when he found a dead fsh n one of the lakes of melted ce whch are scattered on the glacers. Ordnarly lfe does not exst n these ponds so ths bologst thought that he would get hs PH.D. for ths hstorc fnd. t turned out that the man's hstorc fnd' was a sardne dscarded several days earler by another member of the party. Ths occurence kept the camp laughng for several days. When Jm left the ce feld n the last of of August. 14 nches ot snow had just fallen and the temperature was around 25 degrees. Gettng acclmated to the humd 90 degree temperatures of Kentucky was a problem but Jm thought that t was harder to adjust to the crowds, nose and fumes of cvlzaton than to the heat. The Lone Ranger Rdes Once Agan Yes, The Lone Ranger s rdng agan on WEKU-FM, each Monday evenng at 7:00. The show s repeated on Saturday evenngs at 7:00. Ths program s just one of many old tme rado dramas that WEKU- FM s gvng ts lsteners. "Old tme rado gves the younger generaton an opportunty to hear a drama presented n a medum before the advent of televson," sad John Sullvan. Coordanator of WEKU-FM- The Lone Ranger s not the only rado drama on the WEKU- FM program gude. Lum and Abner's adventures n the Jot 'Em Down Store can also be heard each weeknght at 9:30. The drama, whch was frst ared n 1949, stars det Lauch as Lum and Norrs Goff as Abner. Other old tme rado dramas that have been broadcast over WEKU-FM nclude Phppps H. Lord's producton of "Gangbusters." What rado dramas does WEKU-FM plan for the future? The bggest on that lst rght now seems to be "Fbber McGee and Molly." Andrea Halfhll, Maysvlle, s a home economcs major and would lke to be a home economst after graduaton. She was very actve n FHA n hgh school and she sad that ths led to her recevng the scholarshp. Among other actvtes, she was a member of FTA, presdent of FHA, vce-presdent of the local chapter two years t and attended the natonal conventon n Kansas Cty, Mssour. " really lke Eastern a lot," sad Mss Halfhll, "t has one of the best Home EC. departments n the state." A home economcs educaton major, Marnell Cobb, s from Maysvlle also. To qualfy for the scholarshp she commented the "applcatons had to be; World Affars Semnar To be Be Held At UN The Department of Polctal Scence and the Eastern CRUNA Club are sponsorng a World Affars Semnar Program n New York Cty, November 25 through December 2. The scholarshp was presented at the 1972 State FHA Banquet at Murray State Unversty. Mss Cobb s pleased wth her choce of schools "manly because of the sze and the atmosphere. Everyone seems so frendly and the courses offered n Home EC were more of what wanted than n neghborng colleges. really fell n love wth the Home Ec department because of the newness and convenences offered." n hgh school Mss Cobb was n the FHA Chapter four and served as a dstrct and state offcer. She was a Home EC assstant and n Who's Who n Hgh Schools and Who's Who Among Hgh School Senors. The thrd recpent s Janell Nash, of Shelbyvlle. Also a home economcs educaton major, Mss Nash sad that she has served as FHA secretary, presdent, secretary of the Lousvlle Dstrct Chapter and attended the state conventons n 1970 and '72. Mss Nash chose Eastern because "a lot of my teachers went here to school and expecally my Home EC teacher who told me all the good thngs about Eastern. just love the school. really do. 11 Page 10-Thursday, November 16, 1972-THE EASTERN PROGRESS fell Survey ndcates 70 Percent Cheat < ( ontnurd From 'arp <>nr> prevalent on larger campuses and n co-ed nsttutons. EKU professors seem unaware of the problem as t seems to exst on campus. Of 15 teachers polled, almost all felt that cheatng n ther own classes was less than 10 percent. Several nstructors sad they were unaware of any cheatng at all n ther own classes. The professors also agreed that the larger the classes were, the more cheatng occurred. The estmated percentages gven by the professors was up to 30 percent for larger classes and as low as one to zero percent for the smaller classes. The percentage also tened to rse slghtly for assgnments where plagarsm was or could be nvolved. One professor sad that cheatng "depends on the nature of supervson the THE WORLD LOVES A CLOWN, and t must be especally exctng for young mentally retarded chldren of Madson County who met wth "Ronald McDonald" of hamburger fame. Ronald s the honorary charman of the teacher gves when gvng tests," Another sad "the wayassgnments are gven have a lot to do wth the way cheatng goes on. An nstructor encourages t or prevents t." As to why students cheat, there seem to be several reasons or motves. One of the answers most often receved as to why students cheated was the pressure to get good grades. Of the students who had cheated, the majorty thought they could have gotten by wthout t, but that they would not have gotten as good grades. Ths also correlates wth the survey by Columba Unversty for of the students surveyed, 68 percent were medocre students who were under pressure from parents to getexceptonal grades. Some of the professors also agreed that pressure for grades often causes students to cheat. One professor remarked. Hamburgers And Candles "Socety gears a person to gettng an educaton, regardless. He has no other choce. The grade becomes hs God, and he must worshp and attan t any way he can." Another reason for cheatng4s because t s the accepted thng to do or t seems everyone else s dong t. One student sad, "Socety looks for the easy way out, and that (cheatng) s the easy way out." ^^ Edtor's Note: Ths story was compled by the members of Eastern's News Wrtng class (JOU 201). The groupwrtng project conssts of a fve-part seres to be carred by the Progress. Other reasons gven as ncentve for cheatng were money and the teachers themselves. One student sad that he had practcally pad hs way through college by cheatng for other students. Greek Candle Sale slated for ths weekend. Money rased by the efforts of Eastern fraterntes and sorortes wll beneft the mentally retarded n Madson County. Other students cheated "for kcks" because the teacher ether dd not care or was just too nave to thnk that the students would cheat. One EKU co-ed sad that cheatng had not bothered her n one class especally because, "the teacher was stupd enough to let t happen." Of those students n the mnorty who had not cheated, reasons were just as vared as wth the cheaters. Some students sad they had never had to or they had nver thought about t. Many were afrad to cheat for fear of gettng caught. As to whether students wll cheat or not, there seems to be conflctng opnon between at least one professor and student n partcular. The professor sad that t s a "very rare student who wouldn't cheat under specal crcumstances. At least 95 percent would under the rght pressures." However, an EKU student sad that, "f you're a good teacher, your students won't cheat." Graduate Returns For KAPHER Eastern graduate Denns McKenze wll return to Rchmond as a clncan for the Recreaton Dvson sesson of " the Kentucky Assocaton for S\ NnVPTTlber 20 Health, Physcal Educaton and C/Al VVVVMUV v Recreaton conventon Dec. 1-3 at EKU.
