September 17, 1387 Marst slapped wth probaton, penaltes by Anne Bresln and Mke Grayeb Marst offcals have one week to appeal an NCAA decson handed down last week a decson that severely penalzed the college for volatons datng back to Followng extensve nvestgatons by the NCAA and Marst offcals, the NCAA Commttee on Infractons' rulng prohbts Marst from partcpatng n postseason competton and bans Assstant Coach Bogdan Jovcc from offcampus recrutng for two years. Accordng to NCAA regulatons, f Marst chooses to appeal the decson, t must present reasons for an appeal to the NCAA wthn 15 days after recevng the penaltes. Although the NCAA decson was handed down last Thursday, Marst had not announced plans for an appeal as of press tme yesterday. Most of the volatons occurred durng'the: coachng tenures of formerhead-coaches Mke Perry and Matt Furjanc. Perry, who never coached a game at Marst, was hred n March 1984 and resgned under pressure Sept. 28, Furjanc succeeded Perry and led the team to ts frst NCAA Tournament n F'acng wdenng player dssenton, Furjanc resgned n May Jovcc, an assstant coach and academc advsor under Perry and Furjanc, also admtted nvolvement n many of the nfractons. The lst of volatons was sx pages long. Among those lsted were: the purchase of approxmately $600 worth of clothng for two student athletes by Jovcc. varous purchases of meals and automoble transportaton to New York Cty for two players' partcpaton n summer league games. foregn players' free use of athletc department telephones for long-dstance calls. the organzaton and observaton of basketball team workouts by coaches before the permssble startng date of Oct. 15 durng the season. Also ncluded n the lst of nfractons was the organzaton and observaton of football team practce actvtes by an assstant football coach last sprng (durng the off season). In addton, the NCAA report mplcated Jovcc for gvng false testmony several tmes durng the nvestgaton. "After denyng nvolvement n these (recrutng) volatons descrbed above, at a later tme he (Jovcc) admtted hs nvolvement n the volatons," the report read. \ "The vdatons'were/seroms, and" the repeated gvng of false' nfor-' maton to both the nsttuton and the NCAA made the stuaton far worse." Jovcc, however, sad he dd not ntend to commt the volatons or mslead the nvestgators. "I was not famlar wth any NCAA rules," sad Jovcc, a natve of Yugoslava, who came to Marst n "The second tme I told them I made a mstake. T dd apologze for that mstake." Colleary sad the NCAA's penalty mposed upon Jovcc was one of three penaltes mposed by Marst. However, he would not elaborate on the acton taken by the college. Last December, the NCAA suspended Marst players Rk 'Frends recall the lfe of teacher Evelyn Fsher by Lauren Arthur Frends and colleagues last week remembered the work and dedcaton of Evelyn Rma Fsher, desgn consultant and art professor at Marst, who ded last May at the age of 75. "For most of her students she was a mentor and a frend who could turn people around because she was wllng to beleve n them," sad Anthony Campl, chef fnancal offcer at Marst. Asde from fulfllng her offcal job ttles at Marst, Mrs. Fsher was known for her nvolvement n many areas of campus lfe ncludng the lves of her students. "She was totally dedcated to the students," sad Rchard Lews, a professor of art. "She never cared about prestge or her reputaton." Her role was more often as a counselor and many students went to her for personal advce, sad Lews. "She was an extraordnary teacher and had the unque ablty of developng hdden talent," sad Brother Joseph Belanger, professor.of French. She also dsplayed rare nsght nto people, Belanger sad. Belanger remembered a student who returned from Madrd the day after he began to study abroad. Upon lookng through hs fles to dscover where the screenng process had gone wrong, Belanger found a non-recommendaton from Fsher. In t, she sad the student was unable to take a rsk and predcted he would not beneft from the abroad experence. "She analyzed people to a T," Belanger sad. Fsher had a true sprt and love for Marst, accordng to Campl, a close frend and colleague of Fsher. "She was always tryng to make Marst a better place," sad Campl. "Marst would have to go some to fnd a-person wth her stamna and dedcaton." Fsher worked on many art shows, spendng nghts and weekends plannng detals and makng sure that everythng was n perfect order, accordng to Campl. Fsher spent an entre summer Contnued on page 2 Former Marst Head Basketball Coach Mke Perry (Photo courtesy, of Marst Sports Informaton.). self-rfepo'rlsng^hb'uld< have^affected " the NCAA'sdecson.: ~ "It's a rather severe penalty compared to other nsttutons wth smlar type volatons wth not the same mtgatng crcumstances that we had," sad Colleary. "I can say we followed NCAA procedures, we cooperated 100 percent," Colleary sad. "I thnk we took the necessary steps to show that we approached t as a serous stuaton and I don't know f they weghed that nto the penaltes." Smts, Mrpslay Pecarsk and Rudy^ Bourgarel fbrther nvolvement n"' the recrutng volatons. The most recent penaltes, are ntended to punsh the nsttuton, whle the suspensons served to punsh the athletes. Drector of Athletcs Bran Colleary called the penaltes "grossly excessve and wthout precedent," ctng that that Marst self-reported the nfractons and termnated then Head Coach Mke Perry for hs nvolvment. Accordng to Colleary, A look back at the case March 1984: Mke Perry chosen to succeed Ron Petro as head coach of the Marst men's basketball team. The search was conducted by a 14-member commttee of faculty, trustees and alumn, and headed by Marst alumnus Thomas McKernan. Sept. 28, 1984: Perry resgns amd reports of an NCAA volaton and allegatons that a personal complant was fled aganst hm by one of hs players. Sept. 28, 1984: Marst reports Perry's volaton to the NCAA and ntates ts own sx-week nvestgaton. Gerard Cox, then dean of student affars, heads the nvestgaton. October 1984: The NCAA begns what wll be a two-year nvestgaton of the Marst men's basketball program. ' - 6ctrl0»-l?84: Former Robert Morrs Head Coach Matt Furjanc s hred as head coach for the men's basketball team. Nov. 1,1984: Perry admts n an ntervew wth The Crcle that he "probably commtted 40 volatons." Nov. 15, 1984: Murray acknowledged n an ntervew wth The Crcle that Cox's nvestgaton had concluded. "There won't be -any acton taken aganst the Contnued on page 2 Overcrowdng n dorms leaves many unsettled and angry by Mke Grayeb As the second week of the semester draws to a close, several resdent students stll do not know when they wll be moved from ther overcrowded dorm rooms on campus, whle others are angry for beng assgned to off-campus housng. At press tme, there were 12 "buldups" n Leo Hall, 14 n Sheehan, eght n Maran and seven n Champagnat, accordng to Steve Sansola, drector of housng. In Maron, the buldups conssted of quadruplng of students n rooms that are bult for three people. In the remanng three dorms, the buldups nvolved three students assgned to rooms that are bult for two. Sansola sad students who are stll n a buldup stuaton after September 28 wll receve $175, unless they were offered the opportunty to move from the buldup and declned. In an effort to accommodate the 809 freshmen admtted to Marst ths year, housng offcals assgned freshmen to dorm rooms on the second and thrd floors of Champagnat, n addton to fllng freshman halls Leo, Sheahan and Maran. Also, 55 sophomores are lvng n the townhouses a resdence area tradtonally reserved for junors and senors whle 203 students have been assgned offcampus housng at Canterbury Garden Apartments n Poughkeepse. Of the 203 students lvng at Canterbury, located about 6 mles from Marst, 108 are junors. The others nclude 15 senors, 10 sophomores and 70 transfer students, accordng to Sansola. Most of the Canterbury resdents ntervewed expressed dspleasure wth ther housng stuaton. "I'm very dsapponted," sad Kevn Garrty, a 20-year-old junor form Bayonne, N.J. "Marst College s a busness they're tryng Trpled up: Page 10 to make more and more money, and they don't care who gets bumped out n the process." Harold Brenner, a 21-year-old senor from Port Jervs, N.Y., agreed. "They've seen what's happened n the past, but they contnue to accept more and more freshmen every year," Brenner sad. "The upperclassmen pay the consequences." However, Sansola sad the housng offce s attemptng to move Canterbury resdents back nto campus housng as space becomes avalable. "We had a much hgher rate of students returnng to the college ths year than we antcpated last sprng," he sad. "Marst s growng; we had a very hgh acceptance rate ths year." In addton, Sansola explaned that Marst's housng polcy guarantees college housng for all freshmen and returnng sophomores. For ths reason, he sad, some sophomores were assgned townhouses before junors and senors. Freshmen who were trpled ths year also expressed concerns about ther stuaton. "They only gave us two desks for three people, and all they sad was when there's room, they'll move us," sad Colln Janck, a freshman from New Hartford, Conn. Last year, the Housng Offce was forced to assgn some freshmen to rooms on the frst floor of Champagnat to accommodate the overflow.

2 Page 2 - THE CIRCLE - September 17, 1987 Lowell Thomas center floods; basement repar work planned by Mchael Knane Repar procedures are underway to correct the floodng problem n the basement of the Lowell Thomas Communcatons Center, and the basement space should be usable wthn a number of weeks, accordng to Lous Greenspan, Marst constructon consultant. "Exteror foundaton drans are not workng rght and the flood basns we've nstalled are not bg enough to accommodated a large downpour," sad Lous Greenspan, a constructon consultant to Marst. "The elevaton of these drans s very low. When water comes n, they fll up and the dran becomes blocked." Greenspan also noted that the water table, whch changes at certan tmes of the year, was also a contrbutng factor to the problem. Sump pumps have been nstalled and plans to dvert some of the dranage to a flood basn n the Benot parkng lot have begun. Once the engneerng of these plans s completed, the problem should be solved n a few days, accordng NCAA Contnued from page 1 coaches and there's no chance that any players wll face penaltes and lose elgblty to play," sad Murray. May 1986: Furjanc, facng wdenng player dssenson, resgns. He ctes "personal reasons." June 10, 1986: Former Iona Assstant Coach Dave Magarty s hred to replace Furjanc, becomng the fourth head coach n four years. Nov. 21,1986: The NCAA calls Bran Colleary, drector of athletcs,', and says Marst.has Nov. 25, 1986: Marst must declare Rk Smts, Mroslav Pecarsk and Rudy Bourgarel nelgble. The school expects the NCAA to restore the elgblty. Nov. 28, 1986: Marst formally announces the suspensons of Smts, Pecarsk and Bourgarel. Dec. 10,1986: The NCAA Subcommttee on Elgblty Appeals hears Marst's appeal on the three players' suspensons. Bourgarel and Pecarsk are renstated. Jan. 3, 1987: Smts returns to play. Aug. 16, 1987: Marst goes before the NCAA Commttee on Infractons. Sept. 10,1987: Marst Drector of Athletcs Bran Colleary receves offcal NCAA letter detalng volatons and penaltes. Accordng to NCAA regulatons, Marst has 15 days to announce an appeal. Fsher Contnued from page 1 wth students desgnng and tapng out a mural that was panted on the wall by Adran Hall, sad Campl. Along wth Brother Nlus Donnelly, she created concrete and steel sculptures around campus, most of whch have snce been removed. Among those stll remanng s the stanless steel Marst sgn on the rverfront. It once marked the school's entrance. Fsher was hred by Donnelly n 1961 to help buy equpment for the newly constructed Donnelly Hall. Donnelly, Marst's long-tme drector of constructon, descrbed Fsher as a woman who never gave up on anythng, especally people. "I know three or four students whose lfe she changed," sad Donnelly. If students were havng problems, she would have them to dnner or gve them a place to stay f they needed t, sad Donnelly. "She had a talent for szng up people and gettng to ther trouble wthout pryng," sad Donnelly. "She ddn't lke to see anyone gong the wrong way." to Greenspan. Delays whch occurred earler n the constructon of the buldng have nothng to do wth the recent problem, sad Greenspan. After the floodng problems are solved, the buldng should be fully operatonal, accordng to Jeptha Lannng, drector of the dvson of arts and letters. "We are fnshng up the last studo and the classrooms are n operaton," sad Lannng. "There are some classrooms that are not generalzed and there are a number of dedcated rooms," sad Ed Waters, vce-presdent for admnstraton. The buldng houses three producton studos: two for televson and one for rado. One TV studo wll be used for the campus TV staton whle the other s used for televson producton courses, sad Lannng. Accordng to Lannng, the rado studo wll be for the use of communcaton arts students whle campus rado staton WMCR wll reman n Champagnat Hall. "The center wll be attractve to students and parents. It shows what we can gve to ncomng communcatons students," sad Lannng. A computer room s located on the frst floor of the Thomas center. Lannng sad he hopes that by havng the computer scence faculty and the communcaton arts faculty n the same buldng that they wll be able to work together. "The communcaton arts department now has ts own place on campus. Ths buldng gves the program a sense of beng," sad Lannng. Plans for the future of the center are already beng dscussed. These plans nclude the constructon of a Lowell Thomas museum n the basement and the movement of some of the actvtes that now take place n the Campus Center, sad Lannng. "We have plans to add on features as the need arses," sad Lannng. "We want to gve our people as much of a hands-on feel as possble." Marst sets enrollment record agan by Mchele Mller The largest freshman class n Marst's hstory entered the college last week, and overall enrollment ncreased by an equvalent of 141 full-tme students, accordng to Marst offcals. The sze of-the freshman class has ncreased nearly 10 percent snce last fall. Ths fall, 809 freshmen enrolled, exceedng last year's record total of 755. Accordng to Regstrar Judth Ivankovc, the number of full-tme equvalent students as of Sept. 10 was 3,042, exceedng last year's total of 2,901. In calculatng the full-tme equvalent number, the college ncludes both full and parttme students. Two years ago, the freshman class numbered 752, and the fall full-tme equvalent count was 2,802. Harry Wood, vce presdent for admssons and enrollment plannng, sad the sze of the freshman class was ncreased to make up for an expected declne n the number of returnng students. Wood sad the college predcts the annual rate of returnng students to be 65 percent. But fgures based on last sprng's fall regstraton and room deposts showed that only 62 percent would be returnng. The 3 percent dfference was made up by enlargng the freshman class, accordng to Wood. Wood sad ths sn't a trend of growth for the college. "Once a budget has been establshed and you end up wth less students you've got to make up for t," he sad. "You can't afford not to have those numbers." Accordng to Wood, ths fgure s n accordance wth the college's fve-year projected enrollment plan, whch runs from the academc year through and calls for a target enrollment of 2,900 students. TV gear stolen from club by Mchele Mller Polce are nvestgatng a reported theft of assorted vdeo equpment from the Marst College Televson Club studo, accordng to Detectve Thomas Mauro of the Town of Poughkeepse Polce. The equpment, worth approxmately $7,000, was reported mssng on Sept. 5 by Chrs Lezny, general manager of MCTV, Mauro sad. Lezny sad the equpment had been locked n the studo snce last May and had not been checked untl he arrved on campus. "We're very upset that. the equpment s gone and we're dong our best to get t back," sad Lezny. The studo s located n the bottom floor of the handcapped housng faclty between townhouses B-7 and C-l. No further nformaton could be released at ths tme, accordng to Mauro. SEPT. 17TH CITIZENSHIP DAY v September 17, THE CIRCLE - Page 3 Raphael memoralzed wth scholarshp by Rck Hankey Frends of Raphael Mark, the late Marst broadcastng nstructor and local rado personalty, wll be honorng hs memory wth a scholarshp, to be funded by a beneft concert next month. The concert, whch wll be held at the Md-Hudson Cvc Center on Oct. 7, wll feature sngers Pete Seger, Robby Dupre and Nck Seger. The scholarshp wll be offered to hgh-school senors nterested n studyng broadcast journalsm. Mark, best known for hs talk show, "Talk Back," on WEOK rado n Poughkeepse, ded n July 1986 after sufferng a heart attack at hs home n Staatsburg, N.Y. John Steffanc, the new host of "Talk Back" and charperson of the scholarshp fund, prased Mark for hs dedcaton to the feld of broadcast journalsm and youth programs. He referred specfcally to Mark's work n the development of a drug awareness program later adopted by Congressman Hamlton Fsh of Mllbrook, as well as hs poston on the advsory board for the State Educaton Commssoner. "Raph got nvolved n everythng and anythng that could help out the kds," Steffanc sad. It s because of ths dedcaton, accordng to Steffanc, that he and WEOK began organzng "the scholarshp. "After Raph's death," Steffanc sad, "people would call the rado staton every day askng us what they could do. They wanted to memoralze hm somehow." Ken Gonyea, a close frend of Mark's and former colleague, feels the scholarshp s a fttng trbute to what Raphael stood for. "Raph beleved that broadcast journalsm should be used n such a way that t could mprove the lves of the youth and the needy. Maybe Raph s gone now and can't help them the way he used to but ths scholarshp wouldn't exst wthout hs nspraton." sad Raphael Mark Gonyea. u Tckets for the concert are Scholarshp Fund should be sent ;nt avalable through Tcketron or can care of WEOK/WPDH, P be charged by callng BOX 416, Poughkeepse, N Donatons to the Raphael Mark Auto accdent klls young Marst alum by Dane Pomlla Members of the Marst communty ths week remembered alumnus John P. He had been backpackng across Europe wth fellow Marst graduate John Albnson. Albnson escaped physcal njures n the accdent. v : :- - -f. * - Those who knew Anderson recalled hm as a devoted frend, and a dedcated student who was nvolved wth the Marst communty. "We wll really mss hm," sad Betty Yeagln, drector of college actvtes. Anderson, who was a board member of Marst College Councl on Theater Arts, wrote and acted n plays performed on campus. "He had an ncredble gft," sad Allson Hughes, a senor from Salsbury Mlls, N.Y., who worked wth Anderson n MCCTA. "He was a person that you could just tell was gong to go far n lfe," '.Hughes sad. "It's so sad that he won't be able to touch as many lves wth hs gft as he should have." Jeanmare Magrno, an adjunct nstructor of oral nterpretaton, sad she knew Anderson for fve years. "He was one of my best frends. It was such a waste because he had so much potental," sad Magrno. "John was very nvolved wth theater," sad hs sster Cathy Anderson, a junor from Mahwah, N.J. "Hs bggest ambton n lfe was to be a wrter." Besdes hs talent for theater, Anderson enjoyed makng people happy, sad hs sster. "The greatest gft.he had was hs flar for laughter," she sad. "He taught me how to laugh 'tll I cred, and cred 'tll I laughed." John Anderson Students make statement wth fashon by Mke O'Keeffe WASHINGTON. D.C. (CPS) Campus fashons are changng radcally ths fall, but no one s sure f t means students are becomng as radcal as ther clothes. "I don't know f t's a poltcal statement," sad Valere Carter of Mnneapols' Haute Stuff boutque, a shop popular among Unversty of Mnnesota students. "But t s a statement." "It's the return of the '60s," asserted Larry Schatzman of the Unque Clothng Warehouse, a Greenwch Vllage store frequented by New York Unversty students. Whatever t s, Amerca's college students are mellowng out ther wardrobes ths fall: te-dyes, jeans and mn skrts are n, and the pressed, preppy look s out, varous fashon observers agree. "Even sororty grls aren't wearng very preppy clothes ths fall," Carter reported. "Students are dressng the way they're lvng," Carter sad. "They're not sttng at home'and plannng ther outfts for an hour." "When I was a freshman I really ddn't ft n," recalled Tm Lum, a Boston College senor. "The campus was really nto the preppy stuff, and I really felt out of place. I feel a lot more comfortable now. I could never wear those preppy thngs." At NYU, students are "gong crazy over acd-washed jeans. And te-dye has come back n a very bg way. Leather jackets and pants are EXCITEMENT PRIORITY POINTS Jon C.U.B. today! Sgn up n the Student Government Offce LIFE AFTER CLASS! L WAIRCUTTPRS also popular, especally f they have a dstressed look." Another old style s returnng. "Mn skrts are very bg rght. now," explaned Nancy Cooley of the Rtz, just off the Unversty of Colorado campus. "Short skrts are hot." Also bg among college students are slk skrts and shrts, '40s pleated pants and slnky dresses. "Women," Carter added, "are wearng bg hoop earrngs, thck belts and chunky jewelry. Anyone who hung onto that stuff now has a real treasure." Owners of stores on or near campuses say thngs lke Army surplus pants, Guatemalan wrst bands, overszed sweaters and jackets are sellng quckly, whle rch, tradtonal colors lke plum and forest green are n. Consdered "out" are torn-neck T-shrts, turquose and slver jewelry, strrup pants, desgner jeans, polyesters and bg tune boxes. The mentalty also apparently ncludes an eye for a bargan, or, as Unversty of Colorado student government leader Perry Dno calls t, "value shoppn'." Dno foresakes trendy "vntage clothng" shops for Salvaton Army outlets, Goodwll stores and Dsabled Amercan Veterans shops. "If you buy a Polo shrt for $30, that's huge con spent on symbolsm. 3 opnon Page Gettng prortes straght A bevy of bewldered freshman followed the throngs of upper classmen past the Lowell Thomas Communcatons Center and across Route 9 last week n search of a classroom buldng some of them had never heard of: Marst East. Meanwhle, a shuttle van loaded wth upperclassmen arrved on campus after a 15-mnute race across town from the Canterbury Gardens apartment complex. In Donnelly Hall, hundreds wated on add/drop lnes n search of courses to replace the ones they had been shut out of by over-crowdng. Many were sgnng up for low-enrollment classes wth "TBA" lsted as the nstructor. And n some of the freshman dorms, members of the class of 1991 were recoverng from ther frst nght of "buldup," and tryng to fgure out why a room bult for two people s housng three. It's fall agan at the school that lkes to thnk of tself as the "fastest growng college n the northeast," and, as has happened every fall n recent memory, Marst s startng the academc year wth ts prortes confused. In many respects, Marst has grown and mproved dramatcally over the last few years. Each year the statstcs on the freshman class seem to mprove; today's freshman have better SAT scores and come from more dverse backgrounds than any class before them. Academc facltes are mprovng too, wth the communcatons center and a growng number of computers on campus. But wth every surface mprovement, the basc shortcomngs of the college become more ntolerable. Marst has a mult-mllon dollar communcatons center, but a majorty of classes are stll held n rented warehouse space n Marst East. Marst has a large amount of land avalable for development of housng, but the admnstraton s contemplatng buldng a campus shoppng center on t whle 200 upper classmen lve n Canterbury Gardens. Marst offers some excellent courses, but students are forced to regster for classes they don't want because there sn't enough room n these classes. And whle enrollment contnues to creep upward, wth applcatons to the college takng a dramatc ncrease n the past few years, freshmen are forced to make the adjustment to college lfe n over-crowded dorm rooms. It appears that Marst has placed a prorty on lookng good and has let some serous shortcomngs slp by uncorrected. The qualty of the ndvdual student's educaton has taken a back seat to accommodate the contnued growth of the "fastest growng college n the northeast." It's tme Marst took a break from growng and dd a lttle maturng. To.promote a postve academc atmosphere, Marst College has stated that any possesson or use of alcohol wll result n a dscplnary acton. Clearly, the student handbook s not prorty readng for most students. Hence, the responsblty to mantan law and order has been delegated to Resdent Assstants and Unt Coordnators. The task of the RA/UC s a dual proposton. These full tme students and para-professonals often fnd t dffcult to balance ther poston of authorty and ther role as a student. The man problem seems to be that weekends begn a week too early. Some Thursday nghts I fnd t dffcult to concentrate on the smplest text because of the gaety that persst through the entre nght. Ths problem could be solved by the admnstraton nsstng that all students take Frday classes. However, some may be angered by that noton. Those of you who feel you should not have to suffer for your peer's ndscreton, I suggest that you speak out. Tell those "party anmals" to stop that nose. Letter polcy I am sure that, gven some encouragement, the party anmals could fnd a more constructve way to release ther energes. You should not be afrad to stand up for yourself. Your frends wll respect you for your beng up front. Do not complan behnd ther back to the Resdent Assstant or Unt Coordnator. Speak wth them frst, try and come to some equtable soluton. I often get annoyed because those of you who do not speak out are always complanng. If you wsh that your peers were more respectful, then tell them. Who s accountable for the thnnng academc atmosphere n the resdence area? Atmosphere s created by those who set the standards. Hence, f rules are placed n wrtng and never enforced consstently, then those rules wll not be respected. Obvously, we cannot place all the burden on the admnstraton. As students, we must lve wth the communty n mnd. Do not get so caught up n self mportance so as to forget the rghts of others. We ought to fee more self-sacrfcng. The representatves of the extracurrcular choral group 12 students, three professors, and one staff member sang n four ctes and each had the opportunty to stay wth four dfferent famles durng the trp, held May 25 through June 16. "Most specal was stayng wth the famles (and) gettng to know the nsde of dfferent cultures," sad Peter Conkln, a 24-year-old senor from Hyde Park. "It was nterestng to fnd out what they know about us and what we don't know about them." The trp began wth a 32-hour arlne flght from Newark to Sydney, Australa, wth stops n Chcago, Los Angeles, Honolulu and New Zealand. Conkln sad the group performed two concerts n Sydney one of the more memorable takng place at Martn Plaza whch s Australa's answer to Manhattan's Rockefeller Center. From Sydney, the group traveled to Canberra for another concert before movng on to Melbourne and three more performances. The next stop on the tour was the cty of Chrst Church, New Zealand. The chorus performed three tmes, wth the hghlght beng a concert of vared repertore n a cathedral. Accordng to Dr. Rchard LaPetra, professor of chemstry, another concert came about by chance when a tour gude brought the group through what s known as the deep Slent Caves Aukland, New Zealand. LaPetra sad one of the largest rooms n the caves had a celng about four stores n heght just rght for good acoustcs. The chorus couldn't pass up ths opportunty, sngng n the underground down under. The caves, completely dark n man spots, were lt by Watomo glowworms. "Up there n the darkness, was the glow of mllons of pnponts of lght," sad LaPetra. "It looked lke tny whte Chrstmas lghts, dots of lght n the sky turnng off and on. "The sngng durng the trp was great n a number of respects," he sad. "One beng the varety of dfferent settngs." College awats results of dumpng nvestgaton by Tm Besser The State Department of Envronmental Conservaton s expected to release results ths week of ts an nvestgaton nto two nstances of chemcal dumpng on the Marst campus. The two dumpngs allegedly occurred durng the frst week of August and on Sept. 3, accordng to Davd Slngerland, a techncan specalzng n ol splls for DEC. In both cases, the substance a black, tar-lke lqud appeared n the pond and stream located south of the Gartland Commons Apartments. Slngerland declned to release the exact composton of the substance because the results of the nvestgaton are not yet complete. The DEC s satsfed that the spll was not due to any napproprate acton on the part of Marst, sad Slngerland. Gallera: To spend or to earn by Maureen McGunness The Poughkeepse Gallera opened on Aug. 4, gvng students a new place to spend and earn money. "The plan was to brng new stores here to Dutchess County for people to shop," sad Kathy Ustas, marketng drector for the mall. "They had been gong to New York Cty and other places. Now they can stay home." Eghty percent of the stores 125 out of a possble 160 are open now, and offcals expected the rest to be leased by sprng. Many need holday help now, store offcals sad. The mall caters to a wde range of tastes, wth stores sellng products ncludng jewelry, clothes, books, records and tapes, electronc equpment and shoes. An 8-screen move house, banks and a food court are also ncluded. There are also be three major department stores Lechmere, Jordan Marsh and J.C. Penney that wll be joned n November by Flenes. Fran Farnorotto, personnel drector at J.C. Penney, stll has nght and weekend sales postons open. "We're lookng for people who are relable and wllng to work," Farnorotto sad. "We have a commsson plan, so a person should come n, and then we could dscuss pay." Although avalable jobs change from day to day, most stores are preparng for the holdays, sad Greg Decenzo of Jordan Marsh. "In the end of October we start buldng for Chrstmas and rght after that comes nventory n January," Decenzo sad. Decenzo added that a part-tme job can be good for a college student's resume. "It gves a person a good background to go nto retal," he sad. Jordan Marsh s lookng for employees wth "people sklls," sad Decenzo. "I'm lookng for people who are able to communcate wth me n an ntervew and then on the sales floor," Decenzo sad. He sad Jordan Marsh wll pay fve dollars an hour. The mall had a two-week grand openng perod that ncluded Dsney characters, fashon shows, bands, soap opera celebrtes and a phlharmonc orchestra. There was also a grand openng party for 10,000 the nght before the offcal openng. "It s nothng we have done; the DEC s convnced of that," sad Waters. "There was some conjecture (as to the orgn of the waste) but nothng defnte." The substance entered through a dran n the parkng lot east of the pond, accordng to Edward Waters, vce presdent for admnstraton at Marst. The dran connects to a ppe that runs underground from Route 9 to the pond, he sad. Some of the waste materal reached the Hudson Rver va a stream that goes from the pond to the rver, accordng to Slngerland. Rver waste has been contaned, he sad. A company specalzng n the cleanup of chemcal splls was called n and, as of last Frday, had cleaned half of the stream, accordng to Slngerland. The remanng waste s to be completely removed ths week, he sad. If the persons responsble for the spll are found, they wll have to pay the cost of cleanng the stream and pond, sad Slngerland. Accordng to Slngerland, the substance s not toxc and poses no danger to anyone. The water n the pond s for waterng the athletc felds behnd the apartments, sad Waters. The pump system for waterng the felds was recently nstalled and had not been used as of last Thursday, he sad. These were the only known ncdents of chemcal dumpng on the campus, he sad. He sad the DEC was called n as soon as the splls were dscovered. To dspose of the waste, cloths are placed on the water that allow the water to flter through but catch the waste materal. They are changed perodcally untl clean-up s complete. 5 Page 8 - THE CIRCLE - September 17, 1987 Of sound mnd Summer reprse by Derek Smon I've never partcularly cared for musc crtcs. I've always consdered them opnonated and somewhat obnoxous. And I've seldom agreed wth anythng any of them ever had to say. But besdes these mnor flaws, they're a farly respectable lot. When presented wth an opportunty to vent my jaded ramblngs about musc to a remotely captve audence, however, my perspectve on musc journalsts, shall we say, underwent a subtle adjustment. The summer of 1987 wll never be remembered as a stellar one n rock 'n' roll hstory. I sleep soundly n the knowledge that n ten years, the Beaste Boys wll be nothng more than the answer to a trva queston sort of lke the Starland Vocal Band. My better judgment leads me to beleve that Rchard Marx hasn't forever changed the face of rock musc as we know t. There were, however, several occurrences worthy of a rased eyebrow or polte sncker, f not your undvded muscal attenton. Leadng off the polte sncker category, Davd Bowe's "Glass Spder Tour" travesty frst offended at Gants Stadum for two evenngs n early August and then returned for two equally offensve shows two weeks ago at Madson Square Garden. From the rdculous "glass spder" that encased the stage, resemblng a jukebox gone awry, to jrtve choreographed dancers that ; 'xatled West Sde Story -jo mffd! Bowe was responsble for the most borng evenng of my summer. Bowe and tour gutarst Peter Frampton both performed qute capably, but ther efforts weren't enough to rescue the weak song selecton and the crcus-lke stage show. Bgger sn't always better, Davd. Swtchng over to the rased eyebrow porton of our program, ths summer brought major success to two artsts who had prevously only acheved dfferng levels of cult popularty. The Cure, longtme veterans of the Brtsh musc scene, has transcended ts prevous acceptance wthout any sgnfcant rado arplay. Any doubts of ths band's popularty can be erased by the gold status (500,000 unts sold) of ther latest album, "Kss Me, Kss Me, Kss Me," and sod-out performances at both Madson Square Garden and Nassau Colseum. Folk artst Suzanne Vega, who just two years ago was playng New York Cty dves lke Folk Cty, has also attaned her frst gold record wth her second release, Soltude Standng. It seemed at one pont that Vega's meek yet delghtful voce and often puzzlng lyrcsm would forever doom her to a lfe on the folk crcut, but her wllngness to commercalze her sound whle stll mantanng her artstc ntegrty on ths latest album has pad off. Cheers, Suzanne. You're no longer the worlds best kept muscal secret. Sure, some other thngs went down ths summer. Whtesnake remnded us how much we all really mss Led Zeppeln. Los Lobos fnally receved the attenton they deserved, even f they-had to cash n on the nostalga craze to do t. Def Leppard ended ther fouryear hatus between albums wth the release of "Hystera." Crowded House made rock V roll fun agan. And we may sadly have seen the untmely end of The Smths. But certanly nothng all that exctng happened ths summer. Wthn the next two weeks, 15 Marst students wll be travelng across the Atlantc Ocean to study n such countres as England, Ireland and France. Two other students are already attendng classes n Australa. Along wth her passport, baggage and money, Jennfer Clements, a junor majorng n communcaton arts, wll be brngng a feelng of nervousness. "It s pretty scary to thnk that today I CUB tres new tactcs, more events by Matt Croke The College Unon Board has begun a new semester wth twce as many shows planned as last year and s resortng to new tactcs to draw students to ts events. When the drnkng age was rased to 21 n the fall of 1985, attendance at CUB-sponsored dances fell dramatcally because alcohol was no longer present, accordng to CUB Presdent Frank Doldo. "When the campus was 'wet,' we used to have two dances a month wth attendance of about 700 students," sad Doldo. "After 1985, we would sponsor two or three dancesasemesterrandbare^" - ly 200 students would show up." Although the hgher drnkng age has forced CUB to sponsor fewer dances and more performers, Doldo sad he hopes more aggressve promoton and dfferent schedulng wll revve attendance. Last year's student turnout at CUB events was unmpressve, sad Doldo, because the schedule of events was not publczed well enough n advance and shows often conflcted wth weekend plans. Ths year there are more shows scheduled durng the week, he sad, and all events currently scheduled are lsted n the CUB fall events brochure. "The brochures are new, and I thnk they're helpng a lot," sad Doldo. "We've already had several successful shows the frst week of school wth attendance averagng 200 students." "Teasers" are another tactc beng used to ncrease student awareness of the shows. A teaser s a short segment performed n the cafetera durng dnner to show students what they'll see f they come to the evenng show. About 80 percent of the performers scheduled wll.do a teaser, accordng to Doldo. Also, every Thursday nght n the Rver Room s "Catch a Rsng Star" nght, sad Doldo. Ths s a chance for students to see performers who mght be on ther way to careers n show busness before they become famous. Some of last year's performers at Marst, such as the band Jal Bat, have snce sgned recordng contracts. Comedan Wayne Cotter performed the same show on "Late Nght Wth Davd Letterman" that he dd at Marst last year. The Todd Hoben Band, whch only 15 Marst students saw last year, s now tourng wth The Knks. All the performers last year appeared at Marst for the usual CUB admttance fee of S or no charge, sad Doldo. 6 Page 10 - THE CIRCLE - September 17, 1987 Dorm trples a 'nusance' to students by Ken Foye The room appears to be just lke any other dormtory room on the Marst College campus. There are two closets, two desks and two bulletn boards. But ths year, room 318 n Leo Hall s dfferent from most other dormtory rooms. It has three occupants. In an effort to house the large number of freshman on campus ths year, many students are beng placed n trples. For freshmen Mke Larkn, Mke Longo and Patrck Coyne, lvng n a room ntended to house two students hasn't been a major problem, but t has been a nusance. "I thought the room would be bgger," sad Larkn, a busness major from West Hartford, Conn. "We had to dvde the closets and the desks nto thrds nstead of n half." To help make more space on the two desks, Larkn keeps hs books on the floor under hs bed. A refrgerator, a footlocker, a stereo and the dressers take up most of the floor space, leavng room only for a small rug n the mddle of the room. Fndng space for everythng hasn't been as much of a problem as fndng quet tme n the room. Wth three people lvng n the room, chances are good that one of the three wll have company at any gven tme, accordng to Coyne. "We can't do homework n here no way n hell," sad Coyne. "There are too many people comng n and out." "(The room) s just a place to sleep," sad Larkn. "Very rarely s wll au three of usbe nthe room at once." Coyne sad there were other trples on hs floor, and ths made t dffcult to do homework n the room because of added nose on the floor. "I'm hardly ever (n my room)," sad Coyne, who does hs homework n Leo's lounge. "I just come back to get money and then leave." Accordng to these roommates, they have managed because they get along and realze the need to tolerate each other. As Schatteman jumped to block a Held goal attempt late n the fourth perod a St. John's shoulder pad met hm halfway takng part of hs knee wth t. In an attempt to stand, the senor watched n terror as hs rght knee flopped, lfelessly, nto hs left. "We can rebuld hm...we have the technology to make hm better, stronger, faster." Those words were surely uttered by some Joker n the stands. The joker wasn't too far off. After detaled reconstructve surgery, countless casts, staples, braces, sttches and endless hours of physcal therapy, Schatteman wears number 56 as he always has before. "He played probably the best game he ever played here," sad Head Football Coach Mke Malet of hs performance n Saturday's season- opener aganst Dcknson College. "From a team standpont, he's better than before." But there are no boncs hdden wthn hs 6-1, 210-pound frame, just a lot of determnaton. Nolan Marst senor Don Reardon's frst place fnsh n a cross country dual meet wth Albany State was bttersweet Marst s runnng on empty wthout a coach. Former Head Coach Steve Lure faled to renew hs contract as the men's cross country coach after Marst dropped the wnter and sprng track programs. As a result, the Red Foxes wll not be able to compete n the New York State Scholastc Track and Feld Assocaton Cross Country Champonshps held for nonscholarshp schools n New York State. A college or unversty must compete n at least two seasons a year to be elgble. "That's the bg meet we tran for all year," sad senor Steve Brennan. "It tells you where you're at n New York State." Over twenty-fve players met wth Marst Drector of Athletcs Bran Coleary last sprng to dscuss ther dssatsfacton wth Coach Lure, but many have been "dsheartened to return to a season wthout a coach and wth no wnter or sprng track n the future, sad senor harrer Jeff Ncosa. Else Mula, assstant to the athletc drector, told the players that there would be a new coach by the start of the cross country season, accordng to junor Bob Sweeney. To date, no men's coach has been hred. Mula sad Bran Colleary's tme was occuped wth the then mpendng NCAA basketball volatons and he was unable to meet wth Gerard Cox, vce presdent for student affars, to make a fnal decson. To add fuel to the fre, only freshman runners were notfed that both wnter and sprng track were dropped, accordng to Mula. "We were payng for a program n whch noone was partcpatng," sad Mula. "We'd lke to see the cross country teams be bult-up." When questoned about a 5 percent cut n the cross country budget, Mula sad, "It was not just a cut n cross country, but rather t was a cut across the board." A vehement Ncosa sad, "I thnk t just shows what a low prorty the track and cross country teams are to Marst." Bll McKenna, a senor, sad the season wll be lost f Marst can't run n the champonshps at the end' of the year. "The whole season s dual meets to prepare us for the champonshps at the end of the cross country season," he sad. "Now the whole season becomes bogus." FALL Mula sad the decson for a cross country coach wll be made n the next day or two. Pam Whte hred The women's cross country team has been assgned another coach the program's thrd n ts three year-hstory. 23-year-old Pam Whte, of North Manchester, Indana, s the newly apponted assstant women's basketball coach. Whte also assumed command of the sevenmember cross country squad at the season's onset. Whte replaces temporary coach Deborah Bell, assstant dean of student affars, who coached the Lady Red Foxes to a second place fnsh n the ECAC Metro Conference Champonshps n Whte s a 1986 graduate of the Unversty of Indanapols wth a B.S. degree n physcal educaton. After I got off the crutches, I was just happy to be walkng." What about the doubts? Ddn't anyone fear he wouldn't play football agan? Malet sad the severty of Schatteman's njury caused consderable doubt, but hs confdence n the team captan never really weakened. "If he had come to me and sad, 'Coach, I don't thnk my knee s gong to make t', I don't thnk anyone on the coachng staff would have doubted t. But he's just not that type of kd," sad Malet. Spkers to face tough foes by Don Reardon Marst Volleyball Coach Vc VanCarpels s optmstc that hs team may lose several games ths year. He's not worred because the lady spkers have adopted a new schedule ncludng such natonally ranked volleyball powers as Syracuse, Bucknell, Northeastern, Rutgers and Seton Hall. "We're playng 50-plus matches ths year, not to menton we've been added to the ECAC Metro Conference," sad four-year coach VanCarpels. The Red Foxes wll have a dffcult tme mprovng ther record of last year (26-5 n conference play), but VanCarpels s confdent the vctores wll come. "Our man goal ths year s to wn the Vassar Tournament and possbly the ECAC Metro Tournament," sad VanCarpels. "We've got several returnng veterans on the front lneup and I thnk we can turn a lot of heads not to menton, beat the teams we should be beatng." I - VanCarpels' squad started >the I season last Frday by beatng two I teams they should be beatng. Marst defeated Vassar 15-12, and then cut down Russell Sage College 15-9, VanCarpels sad both teams played better than expected. "Patty Bllen served very well, and I thnk her serve s gong to be a deadly weapon as the season goes on," he sad VanCarpels also prased the match-savng efforts of senor Theresa Gannon, a natve of Brooklyn, N.Y. Wth the abundance of returnng starters, VanCarpels doesn't see any frosh slppng nto the front lne up as yet. VanCarpels sad hs powerful front lneup wll nclude senors Bllen, Gannon, Mary Anne Casey and Jean Pernce. Sophomore phenom Allson Vallnno, Km Gwyther, and sophomore Kerr Relly round out the front lneup. "Allson s crucal, she's a fnesse player," he sad, "but I don't lke to call her a star smply because I don't want a star, I want a team effort good communcaton between players." 7 Soccer team records 3-0 start by Paul Kelly Durng Marst soccer games last fall, Head Coach Dr. Howard Goldman was often seen on the sdelnes shakng hs head n dsbelef and seemngly searchng for answers to a mserable 5-13 season. Ths season, heads are stll shakng. The Red Foxes' opponents heads. Marst opened ts season, the 25th n both school hstory and Goldman's Marst coachng tenure, by wnnng ts frst three games, two of those vctores comng aganst teams whch defeated the Red Foxes last year. Tuesday, Marst defeated Army 2-0 on goals by Kevn Segrue and scorng machne Mark Edwards. Army beat Marst 2-0 n The Red Foxes npped Monmouth 2-1 n overtme Saturday, avengng last season's 3-0 defeat. Marst opened ts season wth a 2-0 vctory over Farfeld last Thursday. The Red Foxes wll vst ECAC Metro foe Robert Morrs Saturday and travel Wednesday to play St. Francs, N.Y., n another ECACMetro matchup. When Goldman scanned for solutons last year, there were none. However, ths season he has found panaceas n a player who wasn't on last year's roster and another whose ankle was operated on n June. Not a lkely combnaton. Junor Mark Edwards, the Red Foxes' second-leadng scorer n 1985 wth eght goals and four asssts, was the frosh phenom that fall. However, whle Edwards scorched soccer nets, he smmered the books and was ruled nelgble n Last year, Edwards overcame hs academc dffcultes. He has returned n searng fashon n 1987, scorng four of the Red Foxes' sx goals, ncludng the game-wnner aganst Monmouth n overtme. "(He's) a tremendous dfference," sad Goldman about Edwards. "He can hold the ball whle others are makng runs. He's ntense about wnnng and he makes thngs happen." Last June, t ddn't look lke senor goalkeeper Joe "Lobster" Madden would play often ths fall. Doctors removed bone chps from hs ankle n June, and Goldman admtted he wasn't plannng on Madden's presence n Marst's net last week. However, mtgatng crcumstances accelerated Madden's return. John Semple, one of four goales on the 1986 roster, suffered a career-endng jaw njury and Mke Guarno, another backup, was declared nelgble ths season. The fourth Marst goale, sophomore Vncent Aspromont, lacked experence, accordng to Goldman. So, Madden returned to the nets n peak form. In the Red Foxes' frst three games, Madden relnqushed just two goals and recorded a shutout aganst Farfeld. "He (Madden) knew what he had to do, and he's capable of t," sad Goldman. Goldman also cted the consstent play of senor John Glmartn, freshmen Tm Fnegan and Glenn McSweeney, and junor Kudza Kambaram. Despte ndvdual explots, Goldman noted one mportant dscrepancy between ths season's squad and the 1986 edton. "They want to wn," sad Goldman. "It mght sounds lke a clche, but these guys have a clearer atttude of what they want to accomplsh." Grdders' late rally not enough by Chrs Barry The Marst College football team suffered a heart-breakng setback Saturday, droppng the season opener to Dcknson College on ran-soaked Leondoff Feld. The Red Foxes wll travel to Lyndhurst, N.J., tomorrow for a 7:30 p.m. game aganst St. Peter's. Last year, Marst trounced the Peacocks Last Saturday, after tralng 14-0 at halftme, Marst scored three straght touchdowns to take the lead enterng the fourth quarter. Followng a fourth-quarter touchdown whch gave the Red Devls a lead, Marst ganed good feld poston after Robert Careaga's 37-yard kckoff return. But on a fourth-and-fve play at the Dcknson 46-yard lne, Red Foxes' quarterback Jon Cannon was sacked, and as he ht the ground, so dd Marst's comeback hopes. However, Cannon had a strong second half, throwng two touchdown passes whle gudng an offense contanng just four returnng starters. On the Red Foxes' frst secondhalf drve, Cannon ht wde recever Stephen LoCcero, who was slantng over the mddle, for a 24-yard touchdown. The drve was kept alve when halfback Paul Ronga ran for 19 yards on a second-and-thrteen play. The pont-after-attempt faled because of a low snap. A fumble on the ensung kck-off recovered by John Gahan gave Marst the ball at the Red Devl 32-yard lne. Ronga scored from 8 yards out after takng a ptch from Cannon oh an opton play. Agan the Foxes were stopped on the extra pont attempt, ths tme tryng to run. Later n the thrd perod, Cannon agan ht LoCcero for a touchdown, ths tme for 18 yards. The key play of the drve was a 26-yard run by halfback Curts Baley. Bll Rose added the extra pont and Marst led Dcknson was led by quarterback Sean Maloney, who threw for 221 yards and two touchdowns. Head Coach Mke Malet was encouraged by the second-half performance of the team. "A year ago n the thrd quarter we just packed t up," he sad. "But today we come down and we score 19 ponts. I'm very proud of ths football team," he sad. Last season Dcknson beat Marst However, Malet sad the team stll needs mprovement. "We can't rest on ths," Malet sad. "We can't say, 'well geez, we had a great second half, that means we can beat people'. But, I thnk we have the capablty of becomng a very, very compettve football team." Malet dubbed Howard Herodes as the standout player of the game. "Howe dd a great job puntng for us," he sad. Herodes averaged 34 yards per punt whle enablng the Red Foxes to down the ball nsde the Dcknson 20-yard lne four tmes. Malet commended Cannon, LoCcero and backs Baley, Ronga and Dan McElduff for ther play. The loss of key players Ed Chrstensen, Mark Burlngame, Jm Fedgan and Sean Duffy,to graduaton was an area of concern to the offense. Chrstensen alone accounted for 1,296 of Marst's 1,992 rushng yards last season. Ctng defense as the team's strength, Malet s optmstc the team mght match ther 6-3 record of Page 12 - THE CIRCLE September 17, 1987 Mark Edwards scored Saturday's wnnng goal aganst Monmouth. (Photo courtesy of Marst Sports Informaton.) Runners off to slow start The Marst College men's and women's cross country teams opened ther seasons Saturday wth subpar results. Host SUNY Albany trounced Marst's men's team 2041 n a dual meet. The Red Foxes were paced by senor standout Don Reardon, who won the 5.05-mle race n 26:44.9. The women's team traveled to Saratoga and placed thrd n a fveteam meet wth 80 ponts. SUNY Cortland won wth 17 ponts. Senor Anne Bresln paced Marst wth 12th-place fnsh. Hoop team adjusts wthout departed stars by Anne Bresln Wth stars Mroslav Pecarsk and Peter Krasovec mssng from Marst's startng basketball lneup, "the tallest team on earth" has fallen on hard tmes. Head Coach Dave Magarty now faces Marst's toughest schedule ever wth a few trcks up hs sleeve, but v- certanly no hard feelngs toward the departed duo. Pecarsk, a 6-11 forward who led the Red Foxes n reboundng last, year wth an average of 8.4 per game, has remaned n hs natve Yugoslava to prepare for the 1988 Summer Olympcs. Krasovec Marst's most mproved player one Mroslav Pecarsk Peter Krasovec (Photos courtesy of Marst Sports Informaton.) year ago must fulfll hs mltary oblgatons at home n Hungary. "I feel very badly for a number of reasons," sad Magarty. "They both are very mportant parts of our success both great athletes and great people." "But Mro has to do what's best for hmself and famly and Peter had no control." Magarty sad although Pecarsk was under no oblgaton to leave Marst, he and hs famly have been under consderable pressure from the Yugoslavan government. "It came down to a patrotc decson," sad Magarty, ctng that t would be very dffcult for Pecarsk to return after college to lve, work and be accepted n Yugoslava. Currently, Pecarsk s tranng for the Olympc Trals. If he makes the team not an easy task hs chances of returnng to Marst are slm. If not, he could be here as soon as next summer. He would return to the team as a junor, but academcally, he'll have some remedal work. Krasovec, however, has probably graced the McCann Center's Tartan court for the last tme. "He'll probably play for the Hungaran Army team and he has a very good chance of makng the Olympcs," sad Magarty. Though Magarty was aware of Krasovec's stuaton and recruted to adapt to hs absence, he dd not antcpate the gap caused by Pecarsk's absence. He sad he may then look wthn the squad to the rapdly mprovng sklls of junor center Rudy Bourgarel. Bourgarel, who saw acton n 26 of Marst's 30 games as a reserve last season, averaged 3.3 ponts and 2.7 rebounds per game. He played an average of 14 mnutes per game last season, only havng played nne per game as a freshman. "Rudy was cohsstant durng hs sophomore year, mprovng game by game," Magarty sad. "Hs ablty to contrbute n a startng role s very possble.". Magarty can count on transfer John Kjonek to replace Krasovec as the Red Foxes' three-pont threat. A junor transfer from Iona College, Kjonek wll become elgble to play n Marst's ffth game of the season Dec. 22 aganst Farfeld Unversty. Kjonek shot 46 percent from the feld and 77 percent from the free throw lne durng hs fnal season at Iona. Startng n 19 of Iona's 29 games that year, he averaged 5.2 ponts and two rebounds per game. Joey O'Connor, a sophomore guard who transferred from the Unversty of Nevada-Reno last year, s lkely to jon senor Drafton Davs n the backcourt when the season begns. O'Connor's presence should compensate for the loss of graduated Ron McCants, the team's second- leadng scorer n Whle Marst has the startng lneup settled, t stll has the weakest bench n recent memory as most of the players lack substantal prevous playng tme. It's a lack of depth that could slow the Red Foxes ths year a depth Magarty says was key n Marst's 1987 ECAC Metro Conference conquest. "We had an edge, we had the ablty to brng Rudy n and that made all the dfference," sad Magarty. "Our bench wll be nexperenced and unproven," he sad. _y
