The story tells wth acton and a new muscal score the story of a northern solder's romance wth a confederate belle." An unusual hghlght n the play should! be the use of gutars, recorders, dulcmers, and harmoncas. The cast s as follows: The narrators wll be Steven Stanley, Elose Garner, Merle Mddleton, Mary Davy, Danel Brownng, and Clauda Peyton. John Brown wll be portrayed by Robert Gray. The Montoya appearance s one of a seres of communty concerts sponsored by the Unversty Center Board. Students who possess a full-tme D card wll be admtted free. Montoya, a Spansh gypsy from Madrd, s credted as beng the "lvng symbol of Flamenco musc the world over," comng second to none but Andre Segova. He has performed for audences n the Unted States, Canada, the Orent, and most of Europe, adeptly dsplayng hs nstrumental artstry, creatvty, and dexterty on the sx-strng classcal acoustc gutar. t should be ponted out that Montoya was the frst to perform hs concert n solo wthout electronc equpment or a backup group. Not only has Montoya acheved prmary recognton as a Flamenco gutarst and performer, but also, he has become the most recorded Flamenco artst n hstory. Recordng for Unted Artsts, RCA-Vctor, and ABC-Paramount Record Companes, Montoya's advanced technque (hs extremely fast fngers), hs vared repertore, and hs flar for nventve nnovatons, have made hm a threatenng contender for supremacy of the Flamenco gutar. But, today one has only to st down n a studo (a recordng studo) and there t s-recorded forever." Although many regard Flamenco gutar playng as an mprovsatonal art, Montoya shows that "Flamenco has a very strct rule of rhythm and certan characterstc chord patterns." The Madrd gutarst ptonts out that, "Before one can attempt to mprovse, one must be a complete master of the rgorous dscplne nherent n the form tself." Carlos Montoya not only must feel free n hs art but he also refuses to be ted down even to hs own arrangements. And wth the conference slate only one-thrd of the way, Murray s the team that s gven a slm shot at the champonshp. The Racers own a 3-1 mark and are the only team that has lost only one game. A key game to the conference race shapes up n Murray ths Saturday nght when Western and the Racers tangle. A wn for Western would certanly put t n an envable poston because that would gve the Hlltoppers vctores over the top four challengers Eastern, Murray, East Tennessee, and Tennessee Tech. 8 * THE EASTERN PROGRESS - Thursday, January 21, Pane 7 Hlltoppers Take Lead n OVC Race k EASTERN SOPHMORE CHARLE MTCHELL showed some aggressve play n the Tennessee Tech game as he makes a steal and goes n for an easy layup. The 6-3 sophmore from Photot by MarHHMM Row an* Larry Balay Lousvlle came up wth several loose balls and pulled down 16 rebounds n lead the Colonels n that department. ft BYJMKURK Progress Sports Reporter As expected n pre-season forecasts, Western's natonally ranked Hlltoppers have domnated early OVC acton, havng been hard pressed for a vctory only once n three pont conquest of East Tennessee. Led by ther Al-Amercan canddate, 7 foot Jm McDanels and the hustlng play of forward Jerry Dunn and guard Jm Rose, the Toppers have streaked to a current 4-0 conference slate and many experts are already tryng to calculate whom ther possble NCAA tournament foes mght be. Because of ths feelng that Western s nvncble aganst conference opposton, Saturday nght's clash at Murray between the Toppers and the always tough Racers should prove to be one of the most pvotal games of the OVC season. f Murray can knock off Western, a strong possblty n front of the, Racers' rabd fans, the proof that the Toppers can be taken would serve as a real boost to the other conference teams besdes actually throwng frst place nto a te. Murray s Second Murray currently stands second wth a 3-1 mark, marred only by a one pont upset loss to the scrappy East Tennessee squad. They could possble prove to be an extremely tough challenge to a powerful offensve club lke Western (whch has three players among the conference's top ten scorers, led by McDanel's frst place 30.5) through ther style of play alone, whch emphaszes a tough defence and good percentage shootng. The Racers have three of the top eght OVC players n feld goal percentage (all three over 50%) and are second n the confernece n defense, allowng the opposton 70.1 ponts per game (Mddle Tennessee leads n defense wth a 69.9 opposton average.) Among the other teams, t seems as though Eastern and East Tennessee have the greatest potental for upsettng and possbly challengng the two leaders. The Buccaneers already own one vctory over Murray and a near mss aganst Western, but ther chances were dampened somewhat n a surprsng loss to lghtly regarded Austn Peay. Although they are small and nexperenced, the Bucs have proven that they can contend wth bgger teams, n complng 4 league wns aganst 2 defeats. Eastern has also been plagued by nexperence and the nconsstency that results from t. As the season progresses, the Colonels should develop nto a team that can handle anybody on a gven nght, and could have a lot to say n determnng he outcome of the race f not actually beng n a challengng poston themselves. Western's nvason late n February should prove an excellent measurng stck of the Colonel's progress, as well as beng a key game n the conference. Tech s Surprsed Tennessee Tech, currently ted wth Eastern wth a 3-3 conference record, has actually played better than many experts expected so far. The Eagles have come up wth a exceptonal par of sophomore guards n Al Lews (5th n scorng and 3rd feld percentage) and Wayne Pack, but suffer from nexperence and lack of consst ant front lne play. Certanly they could mprove and cause trouble for the leaders when ther talented sophomores and transfer players mature. Austne Peay (2-2) and Mddle Tennessee (1-3) are generally regarded as almost equal n overall ablty, but these two teams have major problems whch are exactly opposte. Next to Western, Austn Peay s the most powerful offensve club n the league wth an average of 88.3 ponts per game, but the Governors have offset ths wth a ponts allowed average of 90.7, by far the conference's worst defensve record.. On the other hand, Mddle Tennessee's problem s puttng the ball through the hoop themselves. They lead the conference n defense, but are next to last n offense wth an average of 74.4 ponts per game. rooks Has Overcome Adverstes & Backyard Playng Days Are Over BY DOUG VANCE " Progress Sports Reporter "When was young my :father put up a goal n the ;back yard for my brother! He s now playng on the freshman team and as usual he s the leadng scorer, and probably the most promsng player. For those who have followed hs career, Robert s probably becomng famous for hs never changng expresson. f he gets an elbow n the stomach, or s knocked coach at Madson Hgh School. The women expressed a more knowledgeable answer, whle the men appeared to be somewhat vague n ther answers. The second queston the students were asked was: "Consderng all aspects of the Women's Lberaton Movement, do you support t?" The reples were: No.: 71% Yes 23% No opnon 6% When the students were asked why they supported or dd not support the Women's Lb Movement, they expressed many dfferent and nterestng opnons. Although the students questoned dd express a varety of opnons concernng ther support or non-support of the movement, a large majorty of them dd agree on f two major thngs. One of those was that many of the leaders of the Women's Lb Movement were "too extreme" and sometmes asked for too much. The second pont of agreement was on women's pay. Practcally all of those questoned agreed that women should receve equal pay for equal tme. j As a fnal queston, the students were asked: "Overall, do you thnk that the Women's Lberaton Movement has been of any real sgnfcance to us?" "Eastern's /program, offerng a major n ths subject, gves the student a workng knowledge of the physcal envronment and the human element, and the ntegraton of the.two," says Dr. Maronneaux. The plannng program was approved by the Eastern Board of Regents last summer and went nto effect ths semester. The Geography department s co-ordnatng the regonal plannng program. Geography s the central theme of study wth work also n socology, poltcal scence, geology, economcs, and agrculture. The frst. plannng courses to be offered next fall, nclude "Plannng Theory," "Urban Desgn," "Legal Aspect of Plannng," and "Plannng Semnar." Topcs of nvestgaton n ths study are populaton, urban socology, economcs, and conservaton. Dr. Marronneaux sad, "We thought the program was necessary because of the great need for plannng n our country. We are nterested n tranng a number of planners V to help solve envronmental problems." Government offcals have sad that the demand for planners at all levels exceeds the supply by a rato greater than 10 to one, and that the supply-to-demand rato wll not reach a balance wthn the next ten years. The objectves of the study are to prepare undergraduate» planners qualfed to enter, nto the lower levels of plannng unts, to gve them. practcal experence, and to serve as a source of plannng: nformaton. The^program schools also* provde local communtes; wth assstance n: consultaton, advce, semnars': and other educatonalactvtes, Dr. Maronneaux-: sad., The plannng program wll. be taught by Eastern; professors, but a few planners* from the state and local area, wll be called n from tme toj tme to gve lectures. 10 A 11 n Ed. 317 Teachers Meet The Kds Lve! t The student teachng experence, that frst confrontaton between teacher and student, got a boost ths semester from an : educaton class n whch future teachers had an opportunty to work drectly wth students and encounter : real lve classroom experences face to face. Ths new approach was Mrs. Cacus Flesher's. Educaton 317 class (Human. Growth and Development) where elementary majors : takng the course spent one. hour each week n drect n observaton and nteracton wth Mrs. Glora Metcalf and Mrs. Kay Mlls' second grade o classes at Model Laboratory School. Students Assst K * "Our students help the teachers wth the chldren, ndvdually or n groups," S Mrs. Flesher sad. "They may assst a student wth a readng problem, escort the chldren. through the buldng, move furnture, keep certan v records-all under the.drecton of the supervsng teacher, of course." Dr. Wllam McKenney, charman of the Educatonal ^Foundatons Department, voced hs approval of Mrs. Flesher's practce. "Our J students have a very drect experence wth chldren," he ad, "and we feel ths s very mportant n lght of the fact that prospectve teachers' experences are often too abstract to be effectve." Experences Dscussed The 317 students who often dscuss ther experences n the four hours of class tme, do get credt for ther partcpaton at the lab school "The teachers there keep n close touch wth me/' Mrs. Flesher sad, "so have a good dea about what my students are dong n the program." The students n Educaton 317 echo departmental enthusasm although they would lke more tme to work wth the students. Mary Adranne Davs, a junor from Lancaster, feels that the experence s very" benefcal. "We encounter real examples of the teachng stuaton," she sad, "and as we do, we help answer the queston, 'Do want to be a teacher?" 1 u< James Jackson, a junor from Manchester, agrees that hs work there has been.valuable, but "t wasn't long enough. We ddn't have enough tme to get as nvolved as we would lke," he sad. Both students found the Model second graders receptve. "Some students wouldn't want us to leave," Mss Davs recalled. Although such drect contact s relatvely new, observaton n general has long been a regular practce at Model. Dr. Jm Henry, drector, gave some ndcaton of the extensve observaton that goes on weekly there. "We have over 800 observers a week who come for at least one hour," he sad. "n addton, we have teachers from many surroundngschools who vst us durng ther n-servce days." Dssertaton Project "Rght now we have some dssertaton projects gong on, but we don't know exactly how many hours they spend here gatherng data for ther research. "Even classes outsde educaton make use of Model. Rght now we have some socology majors who are dong a study on some problem n ther feld," he contnued. So, despte the sometmes crtczed "model" stuaton, the laboratory school contnues to open ts doors to observers v as well as student teachers-all n the nterest of educaton at Eastern. A FRENDLY SMLE from a future elementary teacher can make readng more fun for any enthusastc second grader. Mrs. Mary Adranne Davs, Lancaster, conducts a Problems Confronted Photo by Ron Wjfe group readng sesson at Model as part of Educaton 317. She not only gets the practcal experence, but course credt as well. Ecology Courses ntated Two courses at Eastern ths sprng wll demonstrate "crucal problems and solutons n the modern envronment," accordng to Dr. Edwn A. Hess, charman of the Department of Bologcal Scences. He sad the courses wll nclude nformaton on populaton growth, control of human and ndustral wastes, ar polluton, the dsease problem, envronmental stresses, restoraton of wldlfe COLE RUCKER, another second grader, gets some encouragement from James Jackson, Manchester. The assstance comes as a result of Educaton 317's attempt to get potental teachers nvolved wth students before they go out to do ther own teachng. Harrs Acts As Edtor Of Phlosophy Journal Dr. R.B. Harrs, assocate professor of phlosophy at Eastern Kentucky Unversty, was guest edtor of "The Southern Journal of t?nm?t# Value. Nylon knt pants sets. strpe tops, sold-tone step-n pants. Szes 8 to 16. He holds degrees from the Unversty of Rchmond, Southern Baptst Theologcal Semnary, and Emory Unversty. and vegetatve: beauty, and "many other facets of a complex envronment and the ecosystem." New educatonal materal on the envronment wll be ncluded n the courses, Bology 161 and 162. "They wll be drected by professors who have state, natonal, and nternatonal reputatons for ther research publcatons and actvtes n agences related to conservaton," Dr. Hess sad. «, These professors wll present demonstratons of envronmental and ecologcal damage and modern methods of problem solvng n a lecture and laboratory seres that wll nterest non-scence as well as scence majors, he added. Ths new envronmental materal wll be ntroduced by these members of the EKU bology faculty: Drs. Bran ley Branson, John C. Wllams, Ward J. Rudersdorf, Eugene Schroeder, Donald L. Batch, and Marvn P. Thompson. The courses wll be taught by Drs.
