2 HOPE COLLEGE ANCHOR J O «CtX -18 Hope College Holland, Mchgan March 14, 1958 *9 Delph and Fraternal Wn Sng, Doran, Cosmopoltan Place Second Revsed Salng Schedule Adds Eght Days to European Program The salng date for the Venna Summer School group has been changed from June 14th to June 7th. As a result the group wll arrve n Europe a full eght days ahead of the date orgnally scheduled. Dr. Fred, drector of the European program, announced that the study tour would be extended by several days to nclude a vst to the Normandy Beaches where Amercan troops landed n World War Two, more tme n rural France, and attendance at a typcal folk festval n a small German vllage. The new dates wll also make t possble for the group to arrve n Venna n tme for the annual Fourth of July celebraton at the Amercan Embassy and wll gve students a week-end to settle n ther new homes before classes begn. The orgnal schedule had to be changed because the Neptuna on whch the Hope group held reservatons, has been wthdrawn from the Atlantc salngs for ths summer. The Greek Lne has replaced her wth the much larger SS Arcada (20,256 tons) whch s consdered the best shp of the Greek Lne. The Arcada wll sal from Montreal on June 7th and wll arrve n Cherbourg on June 15th. For the return trp students wll have the choce of leavng Cherbourg, France on August 26th on the Arcada, arrvng n Montreal on September 2nd, or departng from Lverpool, England on August 25th on the Columba, whch s scheduled to arrve n Quebec on September 3rd. (Cont. Col. 4, Pg. 2) Western Veep Speaks at Hope On Tuesday, March 11, the Relgous Lfe Program at Hope College sponsored a guest lecturer. Dr. Russell H. Sebert, Vce Presdent for Academc Affars at Western Mchgan Unversty, Kalamazoo, Mchgan. Dr. Sebert gave two addresses at Hope; one at 4:00 p.m. enttled, "The Search for Utopa" and one at 7:15, sponsored by the YWCA and YMCA enttled, "A Frm Foundaton". Dr. Sebert has been an outstandng member of the Western Mchgan Unversty faculty snce he arrved on the Kalamazoo campus to teach hstory n He was educated at the College of Wooster, the Unversty of Chcago, and Oho State Unversty. He has taught brefly at Hanover College and Oho State. A popular commencement speaker and lecturer on current affars, Dr. Sebert has also wrtten for scholarly journals. Durng World War II, he served as a leutenant n the Unted States Navy, commandng a V-12 unt from 1934 to 1945, and n hs last year was attached to the hstorcal unt of the Bureau of Naval Personnel. Glory Day Held Mar. 6 To Honor MIAA Champons Glory Day, a tradton of longstandng at Hope College, was held on March 6. All classes were suspended n order for the students to honor encourage the basketball team, who as MIAA Champons were leavng for Aurora, Illnos, to partcpate n the NCAA tournament. The day began wth a chapel servce at 9:00 at whch Dean VanderLugt was speaker. He spoke on "Glory" and gave justfcaton for the settng asde of a specal "Glory Day." Rowland Van Es announced Hope's wnners n the Peace Speech Contest and Chuck Vandenberg presented, on behalf of the Interfraternty Councl, a trophy for the hghest scholastc average among fraterntes to the Arcadan Socety. Rowland Van Es, as charman of "Glory Day" nvted the entre student body to attend he pep rally n the gym, mmedately after the chapel servce. At the rally a band of Hope Students played four numbers. The cheerleaders then took over and the group n cheers. Bob Lesnak, presdent of the Student Councl, gave a short talk and ntroduced Mr. Vanderbush who frst explaned the set-up of the NCAA tournament. He then went on to commend the excellent sportsmanshp dsplayed by Hope students at basketball games and commented on the mprovement of the Junor Varsty squad. Fnally, he ntroduced Coach Russ De Vette. The coach mounted the platform and after speakng brefly, ntroduced the basketball squad. Captan "Tger" Teusnk accepted the team cake from Joy Phllp and Marlyn Hendrckson. Refreshments of cupcakes, doughnuts and pop were then served. "Glory Day" was clmaxed by the All-College Sng at 8:00 P.M. Thursday evenng. "SHAMROCK SWING" To Be Held March 15 Plans are n full swng for the All-College Formal, whch wll be held at the Holland - Armory, on March 15. The theme of the formal s "Shamrock Swng", and all the decoratons and refreshments wll follow ths theme. The dance wll start at 8:00 p.m. Tckets are $2.00. Dr. and Mrs. Hollenbach and Mr. and Mrs. Gearhart wll chaperone the formal. Charle Brown and hs band from Albon wll provde musc for the evenng. Charman of the formal s Margo Gotte. The Fraternal Fraternty, wnner n the men's dvson of the All College Sng. Chandler Selected Communty Ambassador Ronald L. Chandler, 20, has been named Holland's Communty Ambassador for The announcement was made by Dr. Donald F. Brown, presdent of the Communty Ambassador Assocaton on March 10. Mr. Chandler, a sophomore at Hope College, wll be the eghth Communty Ambassador to represent the Holland area n a foregn country. Poland. He has chosen to vst When asked why Poland s hs choce, Ron repled: "I feel that the apparent cleavage between East and West has been magnfed n the mnds of the Amercan people far beyond all reasonable proporton. In realty, whle the two power blocks face dfferent problems and have come to feel that they requre dfferent methods to solve these problems, there s, nevertheless, a sound bass for establshng frendler relatons wth the peoples of the Communst world. It s not up to one sde alone to make all the concessons. We, as Amercans, must actvely seek to fnd a way (f a way can be found) to reconcle our dfferences. It s my hope that as an ambassador to Communst Poland, I may contrbute somethng of value n the search for mproved relatonshps. I frmly beleve that f men can come to see the foundaton of humanty whch underles all ways of lfe, they can fnd a way to lve and to work together n our world." Ron has been very actve n I.R.C.; he wll occupy the Egyptan Co-Eds to Be Featured at Penny Carnval The Penny Carnval, the theme of whch wll be "Carousel", wll be held at 8:00 p.m. on March 22, 1958 n the Hope College gymnasum. A program wll be held at 10:00 that evenng n whch Carl Ver Beek wll act as M.C. or barker. Featured on the program wll be the Co-Eds sngng serveral selectons from "Carousel". Also the cup for the booth makng the most money wll be offered. Sponsorng ths event for whch Helen Hungernk and Jan Owen are general co-charmen s the W.A.L. Commttee charmen are Mar-Les Exo, admssons; Carol Ham, Publcty; Jane Klaasen, program; Carol Paton, decoratons; and Phl Prns, clean-up. Just recently Ron won the Mchgan Intercollegate Speech Contest; he has partcpated n varous amateur dramatc groups and was a threeyear forensc wnner when n Holland Hgh School. Ron hopes to teach hstory n hgh school. Ron s the son of. Mrs. Madge Chandler of 324 Central Avenue. Wnners n the 18th annual All- College Sng were the Delphs and the Fraters. Second place was clamed by the Dorans and Cosmos. The sng, clmax to Glory Day, was held at 8 P.M. at the Holland Cvc Center. The tradtonal affar began wth the entrance of the socetes nto the audtorum n alphabetcal order. Program announcers Allen Grube and Joan Peelen acted as nterlockers for the evenng. Grube gave a hstory of the sng and announced the WHTC would have records avalable of the sng, whch was sponsored by the Student Councl. The program was led off by the Sorostes who appeared n ther tradtonal outft of navy blue sweater and skrt wth whte blazer. Drected by Ann DePree and accompaned by Maranne Wldschut, the socety opened wth the Soross Song. Ther featured number was "Lttle Black Tran" arranged by Murrey. Leadng the fraterntes n the sng were the Knckerbockers led by Hewtt Johnston. They began wth the Knck Song and then sang "Wnter Song" by Bullard. The thrd group to perform proved to be the women's wnners. Delph donned n red polka-dotted poneer bonnets wth matchng whte blouses, and skrts, took ther places on the stage under the leadershp of Edna Hollander and wth the accompanyng of Shelby Braaksma. The Delph Song was followed by "Cndy" arranged by Wlson. Emersonans under drector Greg (Cont. Col. 5, Pg. 2) Faculty Members To Attend U.ofM. "Academy"Sesson The 62nd Annual Meetng of the Mchgan Academy of Scence, Arts, and Letters s beng held at the Unversty of Mchgan n Ann Arbor on March 20, 21, and 22, Dwght B. Yntema, professor of Economcs; Paul G. Fred, assocate professor of Hstory; and Ronald Brown, of the department of Mathematcs, are each gvng a scholarly paper concernng one aspect of ther respectve felds. Mr. Yntema's paper deals wth Unemployment Compensaton n Mchgan and s enttled: A Study of Adequacy and Incentve to Work. Mr. Fred's paper s enttled: The Impact of Communst Rule on the Protestant Church n East Germany. Mr. Brown's topc s "An Argentne Nvola: Unamuno and Nanuel Galvez". Most students assume that ths ttle merely dfferentates our nsttuton from many others that offer currculums n techncal and professonal areas. Ths s very true but a lberal or lberal arts educaton nvolves much more. It nvolves certan atttudes and actvtes on the part of those beng educated atttudes and actvtes that are shamefully absent on our campus. The most obvous defcency n the make-up of all but a few Hope students s the absence of that real hunger and thrst for knowledge and truth. Most Hope students beleve they are dong ther professors a favor by attendng class or dong outsde work, actvtes that are most nconvenent. If these people were truly scholars, the wld horses so often referred to could not drag them away from classes nor could anythng hnder them from attendng the many cultural programs offered here. Another serous defcency, closely related to the prevous one, s a lack of mental actvty the complete absence of that questonng sprt so characterstc of all great scholars. The Fresno, Calforna, Junor College Rampage, n commentng on ths phenomenon, recently stated that "They (the college students of today) receve nformaton from ther teachers and texts as f they were n a vacuum. No attempt s made to queston an authorty, nformaton s accepted as completely factual and beyond memorzng t, no further thought s gven to t." Even more pathetc than the student who exhbts no mental actvty whatsoever, s the student whose mental actvty s channeled n one drecton. Perhaps an llustraton would clarfy ths pont. Consder the student who arrves at Hope wth a complcated system of "belefs" (I prefer to call them prejudces) packed away n hs sutcase. Usually they reflect the vews of hs parents, mnster, or home communty whether that be Orange Cty, Iowa, or New York Cty. Hs academc endeavors ndcate a great deal of effort, but when he leaves Hope he s not any more educated than before he came. Why? Because hs learnng was so one sded. In four years he absorbed only that knowledge whch tended to strengthen the prejudces he brought wth hm. Anythng that dd not sut hs tastes or was outsde of hs experence was mmedately labeled sn and modernstc or stodgy and hypocrtcal, dependng once agan on whether he hals from New York Cty or Orange Cty, Iowa. Even f a student, after graduaton, spends the rest of hs lfe n hs hometown, wouldn't t be better for hm to at least have some dea of "how the other half lves" than to reman steeped n provncalsm? Durng the four years when the contrbutons of all the poets, theologans, phlosophers, statesmen, and scentsts are flterng through hs mnd, s t better for a student to absorb all that s true or all that s convenent? Perhaps t s too much trouble to be constantly re-examnng our belefs, amendng and revsng them n the process of ncoropratng new knowledge. Perhaps t s not a "wse" actvty durng these days when conformty and socal acceptance are so promnent. Such a process of growth by no means requres the sacrfce of ndvdualsm freedom of choce, or even Chamber of Commerce type boatng about one's hometown. Nor does t nvolve any sort of compromse wth sn. It does nvolve the careful examnaton of all the culture to whch we ae exposed, a wareness of deas much more profound other than tose of our petty systems, and recognton of the rght of people everywhere to adhere to those deas. I tl Phone EX n ** Letters to the Edtor Dear Edtor: After readng the edtoral n the February 28 ssue of the Anchor, we found ourselves wth mxed emotons. We felt that the tongue lashng to the student body was very tmely. We have felt the lack of student support for many of Councl's programs throughout the year. For example, we were asked by a large number of the student body to help secure more tckets for the Messah. Meetngs were held and much tme consumed to fulfll ths request. After the request was granted by the admnstraton, only forty of the group of almost threehundred students even went to the Messah. Acton such as ths upon the part of the students s very dscouragng to student representatves. One can see that through the use of dplomacy and barganng n ths case, as n many others. Student Councl s not a puppet of the admnstraton. One must consder, however, that the ultmate control on any campus or unversty les wthn the admnstraton. The status of the Student Councl, as defned by ts consttuton, therefore, s to represent the vews of the students to the faculty and admnstraton. Mere words upon paper and elected offcals alone do not guarantee the vews of an entre body, unless that body has an nterest n, and supports the unt establshed for expresson of the majorty vews. Wth ths n mnd we wsh to pont out that the meetngs of Student Councl are open to You the student Body. Anna Getner Bob Lesnak Noted Physcst to Vst Campus Professor Robert E. Marshak, Harrs Professor of Physcs and the Amercan Assocaton of Physcs Teachers as part of a broad, naton-wde program to stmulate nterest n physcs. Whle at Hope College, Professor Marshak wll be the guest of Dr. Clarence Kles of the Department of Physcs. He wll partcpate n the college's "annual evenng of physcs" on Sunday, March 16 and wll gve lectures, talk wth students and assst faculty members wth currculum and research problems n physcs. On March 17th he wll gve a lecture at 7:30 n the Musc Audtorum. Dr. Marshak has had a dstngushed teachng career n ths country. Great Brtan and France and n 1940 receved the A. Cressy Morrson Prze of the New York Academy of Scences. He has served as an assocate edtor of the "Physcal Revew", a publcaton of the Amercan Physcal Socety. He receved hs bachelor's degree from Columba and the Ph.D. from Cornell. He had been on the Unversty of Rochester faculty snce 1939 and has been a full professor snce Durng World War II, Dr. Marshak was a physcst at the Radaton Laboratory of the Massachusetts Insttute of Technology, from 1942 to 1943, and worked n the Department of Scentfc and Industral Research of Great Brtan the followng year. He was a deputy group leader at the Los Alamos Laboratory n New Mexco from 1944 to 1946 and served as a member of the Insttute for Advanced Study, Prnceton, New Jersey, n He was a Guggenhem Fellow and Professor at the Sorbonne from 1953 to Dear Edtor: We learned from the last ssue of the Anchor that "Natonal Lbrary Week" s to be observed March 16-22, "Wake Up And Read" the announcement read "We lve n a complcated and dffcult tme. We must be wellnformed f we are to survve, and as a democratc naton we depend on knowledge as we never have before." In lght of ths, s t not somewhat ncongrous that our lbrary remans closed on Frday and Saturday evenngs? It s our contenton that the lbrary s the focal pont of a college's academc program. It follows that the resources of the lbrary ought to be avalable as much as possble to anyone desrng to use them. Are they? We do not thnk so. The queston we now ask s why. Under the present polcy the demands of the majorty apparently preval. For the argument s that the lbrary cannot reman open Frday and Saturday evenngs because not enough students would come to warrant t. But why, let us ask, should the number of hours the lbrary s open on Frday and Saturday be proportonate to the number of students desrng to make use of ts facltes? We beleve that the academc needs of the nterested mnorty ought to take precedence over those of the unnterested majorty. Another argument for the lbrary beng closed on Frday and Saturday evenngs s that a reference lbraran cannot be provded to ad n student research. If t s so that the staff cannot be ncreased n order to provde a reference lbraran on these evenngs, we stll feel that the lbrary should be open, f only under student drecton. Better an understaffed lbrary that s open than one that s closed. At ths tme n our hstory, as the pendulum agan swngs toward a greater emphass upon scholarshp and academc dstncton, t s essental that every possble opportunty be provded to meet the demands of the nqurng student. Any polcy whch hnders hs ntellectual growth cannot be condoned. Davd G. Casse Albert Fassler Revsed Schedule... (Cont. from Pg. 1) To cover the unexpected costs of eght addtonal days of travel and resdence n Europe, ffty dollars had to be added to the charges for ths program. Dr. Fred sad that he felt most students would be delghted by the prospect of more tme n Europe and expressed the hope that nether the earler departure date nor the slght ncrease n cost would force any of our students to change ther plans for the summer. As a result of the changes n shps and departure dates t has also been possble to extend the deadlne for regstraton. Snce the fnal passenger lsts have not been made up students wshng to do so stll have an opportunty to regster for the European program by seeng Dr. Fred as soon as possble. Wth the new dates the total length of the program wll be just four days short of three months. A Fellow of the Amercan Physcal Socety, hs nvestgatons have been n theoretcal physcs concernng the energy sources of stars, theory of atomc nucle, meson theory, theory of neutron dffuson, electromagnetc theory and hydrodynamcs. In whte blouses wth flowers at the neck and dark skrts Alpha Sgma Alpha II sang "Happy as Can Be" by Whtcomb. They were drected by Gal Fresema and accompaned by Glora Lnscott. Arcadans n dark suts and strped tes wth Mlton Ortqust drectng and Mel VerSteeg accompanyng took the stage next. After the Arcadan Hymn, they sang "It's a Great Day" by Youmans. Dorans, second place wnners n the women's dvson, n red and whte gngham collars and aprons, whte blouses and black skrts, sang the Doran Song and "Shortn'n' Bread" arranged by Wlson. They were drected by Betty Ann Rothwell. The second-place wnner n the men's competton, the Cosmopoltan Fraternty, took the stage after Doran. Drector Bob Huffne, accompaned by Fred Brown, led the Cosmopoltan Hymn and "Deep Rver" arranged by Can. Weang ther new powder blue blazers over black sweaters and skrts. Sbyllne members took the stage under the baton of Ruth Wrght and to the accompanment of Judy Mulder. They sang the Sbyllne Song and "Lullaby of Broadway" by Warrer-Warnck. The wnnng fraternty, the Fraternal Socety, rendered the Fraternal Song followed by "Wonderful Copnhagen" by Loesser- Odes. They were under the leadershp of Bll Brookstra and accompaned by Everett Nenhus. The group appeared n lght gray trousers and dark sut jackets. The newest sororty on campus. Alpha Ph, presented ther new Alpha Ph Song and "Heather on the Hll" by Terner and Loewe-Lamont. Dressed n whte blouse, black skrt and plades, the group was drected by Margot Fsher and accompaned by Sheryl DeWtt. Closng the contest was Alpha Sgma Alpha I wth ts sororty song and "It's a Grand Nght for Sngng" by Rogers and Hammersten. They were led by Geraldne Gordano and accopaned by Adna Yonan. Ther dress conssted of all black attre. A lghter note of the sng was offered by the Hope-Ives, wves of Hope students. They sang, "It's Sng Tme," and "Busy Hope- Ives" under the drecton of Dors Vander Broek. Under the drecton of Ed Westerbeke and accompaned by Mary Ann Klaaren were the Durfee waters n ther whte jackets. They frst rendered a verson of "Sxteen Tons" and then sang "Sugartme." The Coeds completed the nformal part of the program wth "All The Thngs You Are" and "Beyond the Blue Horzon." Whle the audence awated the judges' decson. Bll Brookstra led the group n communty sngng. At the completon of the sng, the wnnng drectors led the group n the Alma Mater Hymn. Judges for the sng were Henry Hungerford, Albertha Bratt, and Larre Clark. Dr. Cavanaugh served as faculty advsor to A1 Grube and Joan Peelen, co-charmen of the event. Cvc Center accommodatons were made by John Vander Van and Barbara Wolfe. Joseph Vasey was head usher and n charge of programs were Jerry Boeve and Donna Pars. The program cover desgn was by Don Lee. Publcty was handled by Vrgna Vanderborgh & Jance Blunt.

Those takng offce wll nclude Dorene Tornga, presdent; Joan Tollman, vce-presdent; Nancy Long, secretary; Mary Ann Klaaren, parlamentaran; and Ruth Van Der Meulen, sergeant - at - arms. The program wll be under the drecton of last term's offcers. A report of recent actvtes wll be gven by former presdent Lorrane Hellenga. Doran The Doran offcers for the last term of the school year are Helen Taylor, Presdent; Nna Mh, Vce- Presdent; and Jan Walrad, Secretary. They were nstalled last Frday nght at a candlelght servce whch was led by ex-presdent Rosemare Ksh. Former-secretary Margo Gotte gave a readng comprsed of humorous exerpts from her mnutes of the sororty meetngs of the past term. The many Doran actvtes were recalled as Rosemare Ksh presented her presdental report. Carol Cook was unanmously elected to represent Doran as the Student Councl Vce Presdental canddate. Her campagn manager s Margo Gotte. The Dorans have receved permsson to nstall a pop machne n Van Vleck Hall. Prs Boelhouwer s n charge of ths project. The machne wll be nstalled wthn the next two weeks. All members enjoyed the red roses whch ther brother fraternty, the Emersonans, sent them n congratulatons of havng placed second n the All-College. Sng. Sbyllne ^'Ssters" was the theme of the lterary meetng of the Sbyllne Sororty held on Frday, March 7th. The entre program served as a remnder of the frendshp and loyal ssterhood found n sororty. 5 Page Four HOPE COLLEGE ANCHOR Dutchmen Defeat Northern HI, Lose to Wheaton n NCAA RegonoLn Hope Plays Best n Loss to Wheaton Playng perhaps the best basketball ever to be played by a Hope College basketball team, Hope's Flyng Dutchmen went down to a defeat at the hands of the Wheaton Crusaders n the fnal game of the Great Lakes Regonal NCAA tournament held n Aurora, Illnos, last Saturday nght. 500 Hope Fans Present Some 500 Hope Students and other local resdents traveled the 188 mles to Aurora to watch Hope n Acton n the new mult-mllondollar East Hgh School feld house, and were part of a crowd of over 4,000 fans who wtnessed the two nghts of play. Two games were played each nght, but the fnal game on Saturday nght would decde whch team of the four would move on to Evansvlle, Ind. ths week for the NCAA quarter fnals. The vctory gave Wl^aton, coached by Lee Pfund, a wpn-lost record of Hope w^re thngs up wth 19 wns and three setbacks. Four Mnute Drought Hope stayed neck and neck wth the No. 1 ranked Crusaders durng the frst mnutes of the game n a rapd fre exchange of baskets. Wth the game ted at 16 all, Wheaton pumped n 15 whle holdng Hope to two n the next four mnutes to buld a lead. Hope played on an even keel wth Wheaton for the rest of the half, but mssed a couple of opportuntes to get closer. Bll Gerg, Wheaton guard, made eght baskets, whle 5'8" Don Anderson and 6'3" Mel Peterson made sx each to carry most of the scorng load. Peterson, a graduate of Stephenson (Mch.) Hgh School, was named most valuable player n last year's NCAA tournament, whch Wheaton won. The Dutchmen, compared wth the torrd pace set by the Crusaders, had a below-par frst half. They ht on 37% of ther feld goal attempts whle Wheaton countered wth a fabulous 60%. It was Peterson, of course, leadng Wheaton wth 35 ponts, but more than half of that total came when Rtsema was on the sdelnes. Ray, known for hs scorng ablty, reboundng, and defensve work, was the unanmous choce of the MIAA coaches, and wll receve the Bosch award, a damond-studded basketball. In addton to ths honor, Rtsema was selected to the all-miaa frst team along wth Paul Benes. Warren Vanderhll, a frst team choce last season, was selected to the second team ths season. Other members of the frst MIAA team were Tom Newhof of Calvn, Leon Harper of Adran, and Vrgl Hall of Albon. In the contest whch followed, defendng NCAA champ Wheaton barely managed to squeeze by St. Norbert's college from West De Pere, Wsconsn, Dutch Ht 49 Percent Clckng on almost half of ther shots from the floor, Hope got out to an early lead whch they never relnqushed, despte the phenomenal dsplay of shootng on the part of Northern Illnos guard, 6T' Larry Wylle. Wylle, a former teammate of Daryl Sedentop at Downers Grove (Illnos) Hgh school, had averaged an even 25 ponts per game durng regular season play, but really broke loose aganst the Dutch. He made twenty baskets out of 37 tres and added eght free throws for forty-eght ponts. Most of hs shots snapped the cords from way out on the left sde from behnd a player screen.
