Long before the last Florda Legslature began to take up the ssue of graduaton rates and the tme many State Unversty System students take to earn degrees, UCF was ntensfyng efforts to keep students n school and hasten the day they would strde across the commencement platform for handshakes and dplomas. For UCF, the arrval last fall of Marbeth Ehasz-Sanz n the new functon of assstant dean for academc development and retenton n the Dvson of Enrollment and Academc Servces represented a shftng of gears n helpng students succeed. Fttngly, the accelerated pace of actvty drew energy from the UCF tenet, "Accent on the ndvdual." "The key to personal choces that enable students to succeed academcally s personal contact," says Ehasz-Sanz, who has put that belef nto operatonal practce here after seeng t work for her former employers, the Unversty of Toledo and Appalachan State Unversty. Nowhere s the personalzed approach more evdent than n the ntatves of the Academc Exploraton Program, Mnorty Student Servces, Academc Servces for Student-Athletes and the Student Academc Resource Center, all unts under Ehasz-Sanz's drecton. nstead of watng for students to seek advce or help, whch sometmes occurs after problems have ballooned nto crses, the staffers are fndng more ways to reach out pro-actvely. Durng the last academc year, for nstance, scores of students who dd not recognze the severty of potental academc troubles were reached before ther problems got out of hand. By means of a phonathon amed at undergraduates who had never sought advsng out of gnorance or schedules that left no tme for professonal advsement, UCF advsers n the Academc Development and Retenton unt were able to correct self-nflcted damage n The Student Unon Center s scheduled for openng next summer. t wll provde space for Student Government offces, meetng and conference rooms, a banquet room, a food covatf fast-food vendors, a pub, TV rooms, readng and study rooms, a game room and a retal area. course selecton, sequencng, choce of major and study plans. Smlarly, staffers wthn the Student Academc Resource Center have developed a plot summerassstance program for new freshmen whose SATs or hgh school grades rase suspcons they mght need some extra help on college course work. Attenton has been lavshed, too, on helpng undecded students defne ther academc drectons. "The lterature s rch wth evdence that students are rskng attrton f they don't have academc plans or goals," says Ehasz-Sanz, notng futher that freshmen across the Please see ADVSNG, page 3 Buldng projects thrve on campus n spte of fears that budget cuts would deral UCF's buldng plans, archtects are currently drawng up the fnal plans for a major UCF buldng and UCF's frst parkng garage as the completon dates for four other UCF structures draw near. UCF receved the fundng to go ahead wth a 81,000 square-foot Communcaton Buldng wth ts completon date set for 1997, and a parkng garage, whch wll open n fall 1996, as well as several other smaller structures and remodelng projects. Meanwhle, the Center for Research and Educaton n Optcs and Lasers and the nternatonal Student Center are scheduled for completon by ths fall. Computer Center wll open March The CREOL buldng s located Please see BULDNG, page 4 Computer scentst develops artfcal ntellgence for answerng questons At the touch of a few buttons, one can use a calculator to fnd answers to the most dffcult mathematcal equatons n just a matter of seconds. Now magne dong the same for questons, such as, "When was Lncoln's brthday?" or "Where do eagles lve?" or "What year dd Florda receve statehood?" Thus far, computer programs wth ths capablty only exst n the moves. But computer scentsts at the Unversty of Central Florda are workng toward makng ths concept a realty. Fernando Gomez, a UCF computer scence professor, has for the last 10 years worked to develop an artfcal ntellgence program, called SNOWY, that can acqure knowledge from encyclopedc texts, namely "The World Book Encyclopeda," and answer questons related to that knowledge. So far, the program beng developed by Gomez answers questons about the dets and habtats of anmals. t s currently beng extended to answer questons about bographes. "Once ths technology s fully developed, t wll become commonplace. Students wll be able to use t to do ther homework. Busnesspeople can use t to conduct research," sad Gomez. Next ssue of The UCF Report s August 4 Deadlne s noon, July 26 But answerng questons correctly s not the only concern. The speed at whch the program provdes answers s of utmost mportance. "The key to makng ths program a valuable resource s ts ablty to understand natural language, to acqure knowledge and to relay answers to questons n real tme," Gomez sad. 3 MEMORANDUM To: Unversty communty From: Gary Whtehouse, Academc Affars Subject* Exclusve off-campus "coursepacks" Based upon a student nqury, Janet Balanoff, drector for Equal Opportunty and Affrmatve Acton Offce, has recently completed a study on the mpact of exclusve rghts for "coursepacks," whch have been granted to offcampus sources. The ssue revolves around students wth dsabltes and veterans who are negatvely mpacted by not havng educatonal materals avalable on campus. Accordng to Balanoff s analyss, there s legal dscrmnaton aganst a protected class caused by the exclusve rghts approach. She recommended that a rulng be made that all materals recommended or requred for purchase by students must be made avalable through the campus outlets as well as others selected by faculty. Because of ths legal requrement, t s essental that all faculty supply one copy of all coursepacks or materals to the Unversty Bookstore or Computer Store, as approprate, at least two weeks before the start of classes. These agences wll then reproduce the materals and make them avalable for any students desrng them. Ths polcy has been dscussed wth the deans of the colleges and approved by them. apprecate your cooperaton n ths matter. r L Staff Members Complete Supervsory Class Another group of grad uates are recognzed by the Unversty Personnel Servces f completng the Supervsory Sklls Seres, Recent graduates n< de, standng, left to rght, Amy Perry, Barbara Brown, Wll n Hovanec, Jenne McCrone, Paul Fletcher, John Clark, Charles nton, Venus Gler, Beverly DeLong, Larry Fredt, Alce Hansen d Dale Mlner? sttng, left to rght, Arlene Rashy, Dorrs Cannc Chrstna Jennngs, Derek Johnson and Ophela Danel. To select sentences n the artcle that are remotely related to the det of bears, a computer program called a "skmmer" s used. A skmmer s desgned to dentfy sentences wthn a text sharng certan key words. Sentences such as "Bears lke honey" are also detected. The selected sentences are passed along to SNOWY for full processng. Durng the processng stage, ther syntactc structure and meanngs are analyzed. Also, durng processng, SNOWY "learns" about the dets of bears and about other anmals and events related to bears. Assstng Gomez n hs research are Carlos Segam, a math and computer scence professor at Barry Unversty n Mam and a former Fernando Gomez assstant professor of computer scences at UCF, and UCF computer scence students Rchard Hull and Bruce Martn. At present, all of the texts analyzed by the program have been n Englsh. However, the desgn prncples underlyng the program can be transferred to other languages. But for now, Gomez sad, he and hs team of scentsts are testng and retestng the program to make sure that t correctly nterprets nformaton from the encyclopeda and questons beng asked by the user. Recent nformaton about ths project was publshed n the proceedngs of the Assocaton for Computatonal Lngustcs Fourth Conference on Appled Natural Language Processng. The conference was held last October n Stuttgart, Germany. There are organzatons awatng the completon of ths project. Among them s NASA, one of the project's fnancal supporters. For the last sx years, some applcatons of ths research, ncludng the automaton of knowledge acquston for expert systems and automaton of database desgn from natural language nput, have receved support from NASA. Last March, the database desgn project receved a NASA grant for nearly $100,000. Once ths program for database desgn s complete, the Kennedy Space Center wll receve a workng prototype. July 12,1984 UCF archaeologsts Arlen and Dane Chase announce the dscovery of a 500- year-old cache of Maya rtual offerngs n Belze. WHAT'S HAPPENNG NOW: The UCF Alumn Assocaton s sponsorng a free workshop on how to buy a home and develop a budget you can stck to. Whether a frst-tme buyer or a seasoned veteran, the POWER (Provdng Opportuntes Wth Educaton and Resources) House workshop seres wll gve you tps on shoppng for a home, obtanng a mortgage, closng on a home and creatng a famly budget. The two-day workshop wll also provde you wth loan nformaton and a free personal credt report. They wll be held July 29 and Aug. 5, 8:30 a.m. to noon n the Busness Admnstraton Buldng. Call the Alumn Assocaton to RSVP at The unversty wll be hostng two open house events ths fall. Colleges, departments and student organzatons are represented at these events. Attendance n the past has been approxmately 900 students and parents per event. The events wll be held on Saturday, Oct. 7, and Saturday, Nov. 18. For further nformaton, call Keth Mulkay at UCF wll celebrate ts annual Dversty Week on Monday, Sept. 25, through Saturday, Sept. 30. t wll feature lectures, concerts, classes, exhbts, and other programs and actvtes related to race, culture, ethncty, gender, physcal ablty, age, relgon and other aspects of dversty. The event encourages and supports cross-cultural understandng and the development of relatonshps between and among dverse ndvduals and groups on campus and throughout the Greater Orlando communty. For more nformaton, call the Offce of Dversty ntatves at ADVSNG, contnued from page 1 country ncludng those at UCF, arrve at college wthout clear academc plans. To lower attrton rsks assocated wth not declarng a major and to speed progress towards graduaton, a four-week workshop was naugurated by the Academc Exploraton Program to help frsttme-n-college students fashon academc goals once they evaluated ther strengths, weaknesses and preferences. The plot program pad off and wll be expanded ths fall. An alumn academc support network, telephone advsng and ndvdually assgned advsers are added features. The Mnorty Student Servces staff also are ncreasng efforts to make early contact wth new freshmen. New student and parent meetngs are scheduled at each summer orentaton program; each FTC-to-be s assgned an ndvdual who becomes that student's academc advocate. Such nnovaton and cooperaton has proven nfectous and self-renforcng. The creaton of an nterdvsonal strategc plannng team for student orentaton has led to mandatory sessons, greater partcpaton by parents and the colleges, on-demand advsng and streamlnng that has cut the regstraton process n half, accordng to Ehasz-Sanz. Carol Wlson, a team member and assocate vce presdent for student servces n the Student Affars Dvson, pronounces the changes successful on the strength of the smles that lght up the faces of orentng students and ther parents. "We are dealng well wth all of the retenton and development ssues that are part of the larger orentaton process," she says. Meanwhle, the College of Engneerng s venturng nto new terrtory wth efforts to accommodate students who want to buck the growng natonwde trend of takng more than four years to graduate. ncomng freshmen ntendng to complete degrees n engneerng may now enter agreements that oblgate the college to provde fouryear degree completon programs. Under the agreement, students who stck to the schedule and mantan ther grades can antcpate graduatng at the end of four years. Hgh-tech advsement ads are lkely to supplement the "hgh-touch" strateges already deployed, Ehasz-Sanz says. Accordng to the Bowlng Green Unversty and Unversty of Toledo graduate, one of the current objectves s to lnk the student data course fle wth the electronc advser the Department of ndustral Engneerng and Management Systems has bult. That way all students could use the artfcal ntellgence-based system wthout havng to nput ther own course hstores. Beleved to be the frst applcaton of expert systems technology to the student advsng Marbeth Ehasz-Sanz process wthn the SUS, the nteractve course selecton system logcally consders many of the complcated varables students face when decdng what courses to take to graduate wthn the tme lmts they set for themselves. Busness Admnstraton Staff Recognzed The Graduate Teachng Assstant Workshop wll be held on Aug. 23 n the Busness Admnstraton Buldng, room 119, at 8 a.m. All new graduate teachng assstants are requred to attend. The unversty's accredtaton requres that all graduate students attend a workshop on teachng before they are allowed to partcpate n teachng actvtes. Also, legally, the unversty s responsble for nformng graduate students about equal opportunty ssues and gradng polces.
