Reportng on what he termed he success of three ' Oke type companes beng operated/ by mnorty group people, Bartlett stated: feel that unless steps are taken n rural areas to provde employment where the people are, all we re gong to do s compound the problems of the urban areas. Bartlett told of makng *a jet trp to Watts, the Los Angeles neghborhood ravaged by rots, to learn about efforts to promote employ: ment among Negroes. He termed Langston a greenhouse for the ntellectually under-nourshed" and sad the cluster program could be of "mutual beneft" to the commercal EWorld and the unversty. Jon L. Sant, drector of college-ndustry relatons for the Natonal Allance of Busnessmen n Washngton, D C., sad there are 22 cluster-type programs n operaton natonally. "Ths s n fact a natonal effort." he sad. "The ultmate goal s to produce a betterprepared graduate." s* Sant sad ndustry could help Langston n such ways as loanng nstructors, donatng tems of machnery or equpment, provdng summer employment, offerng career counselng and gudance and eventually gvng drect fnancal assstance. "t's just plan economc sense to support our publc colleges because very soon one-ffth of our future work force wll be enroled n them," he sad. James P. Jones, recrutng and placement drector for Phllps Petroleum Co. and cluster executve commttee charman, sad the dea was not to "smply make a tranng place for ndustry out of ^ngston. He added t was nevertheless felt that "there are some areas where we can get n and do some good." Jones sad ndustry could help by offerng on-campus' semnars, lectures and programs, sponsorng plant vsts and tours, and gvng advce on crrculum. Arvella Dumas, Tulsa, has been elected Mss Langston by the student body, and Joyce Brown, Fort Gbson, has been elected football queen by the football players. Mss Langston was crowned at the 8:30 p.m. Thursday coronaton j ^ U n J h e Gayles Gymnasum. Mss Dumas wa s crowned byunj presdent Wllam H. Hale. Mss Brown wll be crowned homecomng queen durng halftme ceremones Saturday afternoon when the Lons host Southeastern State College. Game tme wll be 2 p. m. Saturday. Mss Dumas, daughter of Mrs. P. Jordan and Arthur Dumas of Tulsa, s a physcal educaton major. She s a member of Sgma Gamma Rho Sororty nc., Basleus, ota Chapter, Student Educaton Assocaton, Pathellenc Councl, Unversty Councl, and Student Affars Commttee. She has been on the Dean s Honor Roll two sem esters and receved a scholarshp from Alpha X chapter of Sgma Rho Sororty nc., Tulsa, and an awards ctaton from the same chapter. The frst phase has been completed at a cost of near $2 mllon and the second phase, also pegged at near $2 mllon, s nearng completon. The two phases are a part of the expanson program. Three academc buldngs are now occuped by students and faculty. The frst phase ncluded the Sclence-Technology Buldng, lb rary Annex and Musc Buldng. The annex s occuped on the frst floor by admnstraton and staff, second floor, Learnng Resources Center and classroom s, and thrd floor, A rt Department and classroom s. The Sclence-Technology buldng ncludes ndustral A rts, Chemstry and Mathematcs. The frst floor houses Data Processng, Electroncs, Draftng, Photography and wood workng. C lassrooms and labs for Chemstry and Mathematcs are on the second and thrd floors. V The Musc Buldng connects to. W. Young Audtorum and s completely equpped for musc majors ncludng practce roolns, classrooms and a small audtorum for concerts and other programs. ' Also completed s the renovaton of the old Agrculture Buldng. The Home Economcs department has moved nto the buldng whch has all new equpment ncludng ktchen facltes. The old admnstraton buldng s presently undergong renovaton and wll be ready for occupancy wthn two months. Dr. Hale s roundng out hs 10th year as presdent of Langstpn Unversty and the nsttuton has undergone an explosve student gan along wth buldng expanson. The Logan County nsttuton was almost at a standstll as tor as havng a brght future n 1960, when Dr. Hale took over the rens. Snce that tme, LU has trpled ts enrollment to approxmately 1,400 students and the buldngs on the campus contnue to go up... o Langston s proud of ts Learnng Resource Center. t s the only state nsttuton wth an HC. The Unversty recently hosted a 3-day nsttute for educators throughout the country at the Learnng Resource Center. Langston also has completed part of ts second phase buldng program. A 36-apartment unt complex s completed and two new dormtores housng 300 students each wll be fnshed wthn 30 days.
