Sweep by Edward Abrahams Wednesday's sweepng SO vctory n the Class Councl e- lectons was strongly nfluenced by the unusually large turnout generated by the referenda. A record total of approxmately 4,200 votes were cast wth the Freshman class pacng the turnout wth 1,378 votes, some 100 more than last year. Sophomores cast slghtly over 1,200 votes, the Junors Just over 1,000, and the senors cast 600 votes. Turnout was hghest n the Towers wth 524 votes recorded whle 353 votes were talled n the fraterntes. t appears that the large turnout n the Towers worked to the advantage of upperclass SO canddates. For example, sophomore Presdent Glenn Goldberg captured a majorty of over Bll Brusteln n the Towers, whch easly overcame a defct n the fraterntes. Ths strength extended to other offces and was notlcable also n Arnle Albero's losng bd for Senor Vce-Presldent. However, the effort exerted on the campagn tral contnues to play a vtal role n determnng the electon outcome. Key to the BO sweep n the Freshman class, where party lnes are not yet frmly drawn, was a wellorganzed campagn effort scheduled by Sam Zeldner. t was notable that straght tcket votng n the Freshman Class was consderable, though an excepton was noted n the race for treasurer. BO canddate Becky Hll scored well n North Campus, whle USA nomnee Mke Moore was most successful at Shlppee. n the school wde ballotng for Freshman Senators, BO canddate Peter Duffy captured the lead n all.classes. Among the other three hopefuls, however, trends dffered n the fourt classes. BO vctor, Hans Wlnberg, who polled only 569 Frosh votes to place thrd n that class, ran second n the upper classes to overcome George Spadoro. Spadoro, garnerng 640 Frosh votes, then fell behnd hs runnng mate Dave nterlande, allowng Wlnberg to "slp through" to vctory. The most spectacular tactcs of the campagn appeared n the clase race for Sophomore Secretary. "Who s Sue Morrs?" emblazoned on posters and regularly repeated n the CDC appears to have been effectve n rallyng support, so much so that USA, n a belated dodge, opned that "the Robnson rebellon wants you!". Both canddates receved strong backng from ther houses, n a campagn n whch publcty was the chef factor n determnng the outcome. Junor class ballotng featured the sharpest contrast n ssues and n the approach taken by the canddates to the voters. ncumbent Matt Stackpole ssued a mnmum of publcty and heavly emphaszed Unversty reform and support of the Consttuton as ssues. USA standard bearer Scott Cowen waged a hard, emotonal campagn amed mostly at "gettng more done for the class" and chargng neffectve leadershp. Stackpole's sweep was general throughout the campus, wth only the Sgma Ph Epslon box, by one vote, gong for Cowen. Stackpole's vote margn of , a majorty of 427 votes, exceeded hs vote trumph over Scott Fraser last year. Stackpole, however, could not carry hs runnng mates. Prevous exposure aded USA Treasurer-elect Sharon O'Donohue, whle Secretary - elect Jane Vogler, wnner by 21 votes n the closest contest of the campagn, receved notable support from "certan tradtonally BO voters" who appear to have tlted the balance. Senor campagnng was tepd wth the Presdency uncontested. BO strength n ths class showed up prncpally n the Towers. By regsterng asweep the USA completed a perfect 16-0 record n class offce contests n the four year lfe of the Class of Often overshadowng the campagn (especally one n whch the tradtonal pcture posters See page sx Frday Flm Seres To Begn Tonght "Hallelujah the Hlls" wll be presented at 9 p.m. tonght n Von Der Mehden Hall as the frst n a seres of fve flms sponsored by the Contnung Educaton Servces and the School of Fne Arts. The Frday Flm seres ams to "brng the world on flm to the campus at Storrs and to develop a sensblty for flm the art of the twenteth century." The seres, run by and for students and faculty, wll present fve flms wth a dscusson and coffee followng. The dscussons wll be led by UConn faculty members. "Hallelujah the Hlls" and an addtonal short subject, "Antono and Rossarto," scheduled for tonght, s the most commercal of underground flms. The church had gven up the project due to nadequate facltes. Commttee on Unversty Reform Plans To Consder U.S. Selectve Servce The week of November 13 wll be devoted to a consderaton of the Unted States Selectve Servce by the Commttee on Unversty Reform, Glenn Morrs, Charman of the "Role of the Unversty n Socety Commttee" of CUR has announced. n a letter to Presdent Babbldge, Morrlse sad CUR s studyng the Unversty's polcy of reportng class rank on students wth a 2-S deferment. We plan to present an explanaton of the Unversty's polcy on ths matter and co-sponsor wth the Junor Class a referendum on the queston of selectve servce and the 2-S deferment." The letter specfcally asks for' nformaton on the hstory of the provson of such nformaton by the Unversty, the formulae used n determnng class rank, and the procedure for reportng class rank to the Selectve Servce Admnstraton. Next week, there wll be several programs amed at nformng the unversty communty of the Unversty's procedureon reportng class rank and the natonal draft polcy. n addton, efforts wll be made to present Student-Operated Weather Staton to Report Each Day A student-operated weather staton has been added to UConn's Department of Clmatology and Oceanography. Peter Plante and Glenn Partelow, UConn freshman and sophomore respectvely, have receved permsson from Dr. George Rumney of the department to use the weather recordng equpment located n Beach Hall. Forecasts lke that prnted today wll be made daly for the CDC and, t s expected, for WHUS. Plante and Partelow have been usng the weather staton snce October 12. Durng the month of October they had an accuracy of 87.7 percent. Why was the ASG referendum defeated? (We are gong to cheat here and suggest that the llegal use of campagn materals, e.g. "VOTE NO" buttons wthn 50' of the ballot boxes was one consderaton.) Why dd the Board of Governors recently ncrease ther votng executve board by two new postons - both members of the Admnstraton? Why dd the state pay for a new road at the new parkng row opposte the Schools of Busness, Educaton, and Pharmacy last sprng, snce they are now n the process of rppng t up to put n the water ppes they forgot?
