Ed. News "hs s the great year of the Unversty-the Centennal Year." sad Dr. Robert R. Martn, presdent. "t marks the one hundredth year of hgher educaton on ths campus." However, ths does not mean that Eastern tself s one hundred years old. he frst educatonal faclty located on ths ste was Central Unversty. Splt From Centre Founded n 1874, Central Unversty was a result of a splt from Centre College n Danvlle Dec. 31, he Southern Presbyterans, stll upset by Cvl War strfe, establshed ther own college. Central Unversty conssted almost exclusvely of the Unversty Buldng, and had only two Chancellors. Robert L. Breck served from , and L.H. Blanton. for whom the presdent's house s named served from when Central Unversty closed. Durrg the era of Central Unversty, educatonal facltes ncluded Schools of Law, Medcne and Dentstry. Eastern 'Number One' For fve years, , Walters Collegate nsttute, a prvate school for boys occuped the ste. t was under the auspces of the Presbyteran Church. n March of 1906, Governor J.C.W. Accordng to Feltner, the Centennal year offers a new and exctng vehcle to use n communcatng and nterpretng Eastern and ts programs to the publc. Freshmen daze here agan BY KAHY GALLAHER SUff Wrter Remember those tryng frst days at school when you were a freshman? You probably had the same problems as today's freshmen, so you can easly sympathze wth them. he frst problem s checkng nto the dorm and fndng they have no room for you. hen, after you fnally get a room, you fnd that you and your roommate cannot possbly tolerate each other. he next day on campus s your day to regster. After standng n varous lnes for at least an hour, you dscover that many of the classes that you wanted are now closed. As Don Hall of Dayton commented, "'m glad now, that preregstered. hose lnes seem endless." However, the frst days of freshmen are not always flled wth problems. Freshmen are kept qute busy explorng the campus and encounter meetng new frends. f they have not been busy preparng for classes, there have been concerts for Jhe past three nghts to attend. Many of today's freshmen nave Deen able to take ther problems n strde because of the help of others. Stephane Schwenberg, a graduate assstant at McGregor Hall, from Pttsburgh, chose Eastern over fve other schools to do her graduate work because of the frendlness of the staff and students. She also sad that everyone has gone out of ther way to be nce to her. When asked ther frst mpressons of Eastern, many freshmen had dentcal answers. Kathy Grubbs from Lousvlle sad she dd not know what to expect, but everyone had been so frendly, that she could not help but lke the campus. Eastern's sze made a lot of mpressons on people. 4 CBS dons new faces BY.G.MOORE Fne Arts Edtor hose who get up as early as seven n the mornng should take note of the new faces on the CBS Mornng News. he new faces belong to Sally Qunn and Hughes Rudd. he sgnng of Ms. Qunn and CBS veteran Rudd as co-anchorpersons for the mornng news broadcast s part of a long contnued effort by CBS to try and snatch some of the early mornng audence away from NBC's oday Show. Enter the team of Qunn and Rudd. Sally Qunn s a confessed rooke to televson.. Before comng to CBS, she spent some much-talked-about tme at the Washngton Post as a reporter. Among other thngs to her credt was the frst exclusve ntervew wth the just-arrved dplomatc delegaton from the People's Republc of Chna. t s reported that Ms. Qunn brushed asde the pomp but not the crcumstance and ntervewed the gentlemen n ther underwear. n any event, she came.to CBS hghly recommended. As wth most programs that receve a lot of advance publcty, the CBS Mornng News got off to a bad start. he frst day, hours before ar tme, Qunn collapsed n the newsroom from a combnaton of exhauston and a bad cold. She was taken to a hosptal, gven copous quanttes of medcaton and rushed back to the studo to struggle through her naugural broadcast. he next day Hughes Rudd's mother ded and the day after that Watergate Commttee counsel Sam Dash phoned fve mnutes before ar tme to cancel a lve ntervew scheduled for md-way nto the program. he format of the program s n sharp contrast to that of he oday Show on NBC. he CBS News s only one hour long, oday runs two hours. he CBS program s almost entrely hard news whle more than half of the oday show s made up features and ntervews, many of whch couldn't keep a stuffed doll nterested (for very long, anyway). And to ther credt, one thng you won't fnd (yet, at least) on CBS s Qunn and Rudd dong ther own commercals. Hughes Rudd s the real star of the show, f you could call t that. Hs raspy voce and backporch down-home wt combne to make" hs occasonal commentares well worth gettng up for. Before takng up hs new dutes, Rudd was CBS's pundt-correspondent for mddle Amerca. Cht-chat between news stores s featured on the Qunn-Rudd hour and after the frst week of the program, Ms. Qunn was deservedly rdculed n the press for some personal drvel followng a serous report on chld labor abuses. Newsman Rudd handles hs opportuntes qute well, however. A report on one of those 'accdental* bombngs n Southeast Asa by Amercan B- 52s was shown n whch an Jm Stokely, of Exle, belts t out earler ths week durng one of the many pre-school concerts. Concerta prove dssappontng BV.G. MOORE Fne Arts Edtor Wth the begnng of school ths week and all the confuson and frustraton that go wth t, students were offered some respte n three nghts of free musc. Monday nght a concert was held n the ravne under the threat of ran. he ruckers, mage and the echnques were featured along wfth Nook & Cranny, Count Fve and several other bands. he concert began at 5 p.m. and the crowd remaned sparse untl well after dark. he musc was farly uneventful, consstng of the usual stuff played at concerts by local bands. Everyone was watng for the echnques, but t s probably far to say that most were dssapponted. he echnques were about as average as the rest of the bands. Amercan offcal descrbed the damage as "mnor". At the concluson of the report, Rudd remarked:"here s no such thng as 'mnor' damage from a B-52. f you look at a B-52 strke from half a mle*away, t looks lke the end of the world. f you're under t, t s." rue, Sally Qunn does try a bt too hard to be whatever she's tryng to be and true, the broadcast n general could use some tghtenng up n the pace, but the CBS Mornng News wth Sally Qunn and Hughes Rudd s the frst real alternatve for early mornng vewers who can't bear to watch Barbara Walters mumblng and tryng to sell them a can of Alpo at seven a.m. KM 'A Delcate Balance', Oct. 2-7 HE EASERN PROGRESS-hursday, August 23, 1973-Page 3. Dr. Davd D. Gale h^s been apponted to the offce by the Board of Regents. He formerly served as charman of the Dvson of Lfe and Health Scences at Harper College n Palantne,., where he developed several alled health programs. He descrbed the alled health program as a 'cluster concept' of gatherng all the programs consdered 'alled' to the medcal professon nto one program. At present, EKU has about 17 programs under the alled health concept. Dr. Gale noted that whereas n the past (SSsSs^ff:v: : :x«physcans and nurses provded most of the medcal care, today there are about 16 alled health workers for every physcan, all provdng ths team approach to medcal help. One of the frst prortes for Dr. Gale's offce s to determne the employment percentage of EKU alled health graduates and the needs of the alled health professons. hus, he says, he can plan adequate programs at EKU. "'m convnced that Kentucky s not on the verge of overproducng graduates n terms of alled health," he sad. he state s tself dong a survey of needs n the professon. Dr. Gale s also nterested n fndng out student nterests wth regard to alled s Mlestone pcture schedule set ^ Mss Sharon Stevens, edtor of the 1973 Mlestone-has announced the Mlestone photo appontments for students. He hopes to fnd Some medum of communcaton wth them. "Students do not realze that there are some 250 occupatonal ttles n alles^ health. doubt that the students are aware of what we have rght here n programs for medcal assstants, correctve therapy, speech pathology and audoogy and other related areas," he sad. He added that the occupatonal outlook for many medcal-related professons ranges from "very good" to "excellent", wth some occupatons even consdered shortage occupatons. By educatng students to occupatonal needs and outlook and by assessng the manpower needs of alled health professons, Dr. Gale hopes to explore several areas of expanson for the alled health program here. Among possble programs to be explored would be 2-year programs for medcal laboratory techncans, dental hygene, and mental health assstants as well as 4-year programs n health care management, hosptal admnstraton, publc health admnstraton and occupatonal therapy. Dr. Gale noted that n 1988 fourteen students graduated n alled health, and n 1973, 257 were graduated n the same area. hs growth reflects the need for more programs and facltes. here s now a proposal for the constructon of an alled health buldng that would also house student health servces. Dr. Gale ndcated that the plans are drawn up and that the buldng s n the "fnal approval stages." Constructon s expected wthn a year. he buldrg wll be located across Kt Carson Drh from the Wallace Buldng. Dr. Gale learned of EKU through the Amercan Medcal Assocaton, wth whom the Unversty advertsed for a dean of the Alled Health. Havng lved 20 mnutes north of O'Hare Arport, he fnds Eastern a 'pleasant change from the actve cty.' He s 'most anxous' tomate«4hesludents aware of the wde varety of programs and professons n alled health. He sad the unversty has made "a major commtment to alled health," but there s much plannng to do and data to gather. hough he's not teachng now, he expects to be teachng one course n the sprng. he younger generaton starts early. hs lttle grl s fndng a deeper meanng to the musc offered by several local bands n the ravne. Only Dr. W.F. O'Donnell, who served as EKU presdent for 19 years, has held the offce longer than Dr. Martn. As Eastern's sxth chef executve, Dr. Martn wll be the Unversty's centennal presdent as EKU celebrates the 100th year of hgher educaton on the Rchmond campus durng the academc year. % LEN gven federal grant Eastern has been awarded a $601,533 federal grant to fnance a three-year project n the Unversty's school of Law Enforcement. "Our selecton as one of only fve unverstes to partcpate n ths program of natonal mpact," sad Presdent Martn, "reflects both the qualty of our School of Law Enforcement and also the commtment of the Unversty to law enforcement educaton and tranng." Dr. Martn ponted out that the Unversty has receved a total of 37 grants and contracts from varous agences to support law enforcement educaton snce the Unversty ntated the School of Law Enforcement n 1965 EKU was the frst nsttuton n the naton to receve a grant from the Offce of Law Enforcement Assstance, U.S. Department of Justce, for the purpose of developng and expandng a unversty law enforcement oroerar- Easternhasreceved to date a total of 43 graduate fellowshps from the U.S. Offce of Educaton for the purpose of preparng college law enforcement teachers and s the only nsttuton n the naton recevng support for ths purpose. he new LEAA award wll permt expanson of ths and other areas of graduate study for the preparaton of leadershp personnel for the crmnal justce system.
