Arts Commttee Makng Cuts To Meet Lmtatons On Space By NANCY ANDREWS Assocate Edtor The Fne Arts Commsson last week approved recommendatons to locate the proposed arts complex on ste C2, west of Taylor Dormtory. The plans stll face approval or rejecton by the Board of Trustees durng ther next meetng October 20. ;,jmdents and faculty have reached favorably for the most part to plans.for the complex. There has been some dsappontment, manly among students, due largely to space lmtatons whch resulted n the excluson. of speech, rado, televson and flm facltes from the plans. n effect, ths move create:!! a physcal splt n the speech communcaton and theatre arts department. WFDDOut Dr. Julan Burroughs, general manager for WFDD-FM, beleves ths may lead to the development of a separate theater arts department. Burroughs requests for space for rado, televson and flm facltes were dropped entrely from the project plans. "m releved and thnk that t was an ntellgent decson that was made," he sad concernng the excluson of hs requests. " feel better about watng, because they were gong to splt televson and flm from rado. do thnk ths wll probably lead to the creaton of a separate theater department. thnk t would have been better to have kept speech, rado, TV, flm and theater together n the new faclty." Students Protest Vst By Agnew A group of Wake Forest students staged a peaceful demonstraton of dssent today as Vce Presdent Spro T. Agnew addressed an open rally at the courthouse square. Led by former Student Government Vce Presdent Georg Bryan, the students demonstrated to show Agnew that he was not wanted by some groups of Wnston-Salem resdents, accordng to group leaders. Hopng to "brng realty closer to home," the group planned Wednesday nght to use physcal symbols today to protest speclflc areas of the Nxon Ad mnstraton. They dstrbuted arplanes made of paper money to represent tax money spent for bombs. Barbed wre was used to represent "how the Amercans have gone to help and have ended up sendng people to refugee camps," accordng to Bryan. "The news reports these thngs every nght," added Bryan, "but t just snt httng people. We want to gve them somethng whch wll make them realze what the admnstraton has caused." Another major symbol of the protestors was an eght-foot sgn whch showed Nxon wth peace symbols on both hands standng over a "happy face" world. The lower.part of the sgn dropped off to show ~xons hands wth strngs attached to symbols of the war, ecology and other areas of dscontent. Bryan sad the sgn represented the Presdents "strngs-attached polcy." Some of the students covered ther faces wth clown whte pant, and the protestors also wore arm bands. At the organzatonal meetng Wednesday nght, the group decded to reman non-partsan. "Our man purpose s to protest the Nxon admnstraton," Bryan explaned, addng that the group dd not want to njure the McGovern cause n the J;rocess. n a memeographed statennent the students sad, "We protest these atttudes n the Amercan poltcal system and bold no allegance to any party. nstead t s our purpose to expose what we fnd destructve n the Nxon admnstraton and to offer our ndvdual dssent to those responsble." Lesser of Evls However, Burroughs consders t a prudent decson to drop one program entrely for the sake of adequate facllltl~ for a lmted group of programs. "Rather than cut everybody, t makes sense to me that some would have to be left out. t makes sense to me also. that lt would be better to. elnunate. complete programs such as rado, televson and flm, than to put rado n the buldng and leave out televson and flm," Burroughs sad. Necessary cuts Co-charman of the Fne Arts Commsson, Dr. Charles Allen, explaned that t became necessary to cut back on the amount of space and money allotted to each department as plannng progressea. A celng was set at $5.5 mllon, and prortes for space n the buldng were lmted to the theater, art and musc, n that order. "The reasons are obvous," Allen sad. "Theater has to get out of the lbrary. Art needs facltes for a major. Musc needs to move from the chapel." "You have to make a basc decson. De you cut theater, musc and art so much you jeopardze the programs, or do you cut other programs en trely?" Prortes Set Allen sad the buldng wll have 105,000 square feet gross and 66,000 net square feet. When ths decson was made, varow departments were assgned space accord.llg to prortes. Becky Schmdt, a theater major expressed her dscontent wth the archtecture and ste commttees recommendatons, mplyng that too much attenton was gven to the parts of the buldng whch the publc wll see, wth too lttle emphass put on student-orented aspects of the plans. Dsappontment "m not dssatsfed, m just dsapponted," she sad. "ts gong to be a beautful place that the unversty wll be proud of and that townspeople wll be glad to come to, but t wll not be the campus-orented buldng that t Chuck Berry, the "father of rock n roll," wll perform tonght at 8 n Wat Chapel. Tckets wll be on sale at the door for $3. should be. "They ddnt cut down on seatng or audtorums or the publc spaces, but they dd cut down on storage rooms and practce rooms. ts not studentcentered," she sad. Tedford Satsfed However, Dr. Harold Tedford, assocate professor of theater arts, modfed ths tone somewhat, sayng that work space and storage space n the theater secton were "trmmed." Tedford sad that theaters orgnal request was for 4,000 square feet, and that they ended up wth 3,200 square feet. He sad the cutback "wont be a hndrance." "We ddnt lose any sngle type of functonng space; there was just a reducton. m happy wth what we got. thnk that what weve ended up wth s a satsfactory soluton to the problems we were faced wth," he sad. Tedford descrbed plans for the man theater as "the perfect sze for a theater. The relatonshlq. wth the audence wll be nearly perfect." He added that he was dsapponted that the buldng could not nclude the speech department wth rado, televson and flm facltes. TODAY EDTORALLY * TMELY MASOCHSM *A WNNNG TEAM Free As The Grass Grows... The future openng of the grass lot behnd the womens dorms s expected to allevate any JrOblems caused by the rcrease of about 375 regstered vehcles on campus ths year. "Weve got more than enough space for parkng even wth ~e ncrease n cars on campus ths year," Marshall sad. The bg problem s just that the lots arent n the most convenent places for some students, procedures whch went nto ef. feet. The new polces, whch were drawn up by a Student Government commttee after wdespread crtcsm of the Councl three years ago, made nvestgaton of honor volaton reports the Councls prmary task. Trals are now heard by jures of 12 selected from the student body, and nvestgaton and tral procedures are spelled out n greater detal. Stewart cted a lack of n vestgaton gudelnes as last years major problems because of ths, reconsttutonal rules n volvng cross-examnaton, questonng of wtnesses, and other procedures were sometmes volated. n the resultng confuson, none of the dozen or so nvestgatons conducted last year resulted n a tral. n another stuaton, a number of students called for jury duty durng sprng exams were treated rudely, he sad. n order to remedy these procedural problems, the Councl s now drawng up a set of gudelnes wthn the consttutonal regulatons to try to make nvestgatons and trals more orderly. "Ths semester we want to gve the old system another chance," Stewart explaned. He sad Bunz Danels, charman of the Student Government consttuton commttee, has agreed to let the Councl members vrtually wrte the Honor Councl secton of the proposed new SG consttuton, ncorporatng recommendatons for changes as on ther experences. We told hm we would contnue to be on hm f t doesnt get better." About 20 students met wth Rvero Sunday to dscuss ther complants about the qualty, quantty and prces of the cafetera food. "The food has always been bad, but t keeps gettng worse," Rvero sad at the meetng. "And N CONCERT Jrces are so hgh-the student needs money more than Slater." Several students also complaned about long lnes n the cafetera, and sad that because Slater has a monopoly on campus food servces, there s no motvaton for mprovement. Although the Student Judcal Board and the Honor Councl often seemed to be vyng to outdo each other n mstakes last year, the Councl, and the honor system t embodes, was far less able than the other new judcal body to stand the severe blow to ts prestge. A system whch reles for ts effectveness on lofty but vague moral prncples s gong to lose the respect even of those who beleve n the prncples when jurors are treated hghhandedly and not a sngle nvestgaton s handled well enough to result n a tral. Unfortunately, the problem doesnt stop there. f t were only a queston of procedural effcency, the honor system would begn workng smoothly agan as ths years Councl puts thngs n order and establshes ts gudelnes. But Mr. Stewart and Mss Mllsaps and the other Councl members know that snt gong to be enough. They know, to be blunt, that the amount of respect the student body has for the honor system s near zero and fast approachng a negatve number. The causes of ths stuaton are only partally the mechancal bumblngs of the Councl-thats the easy part to correct. The deeper causes are what ths years Councl s begnnng to deal wth, n an uphll struggle. The deeper causes are thngs lke student freedom pluralsm, legalsm and the do-you"wn-thng atttude - thngs whch pro<juce fne results n some areas but have unforeseen sde effects. And paradoxcally, the acceptance of a false corporate gult to ease a conscence whch doesnt lke to thnk of tself as ndvdually responsble. Mss Mllsaps expressed t perfectly at the Councl meetng Tuesday nght: "We need to stress that the prncple of honor should be placed above self nterest and that the ntegrty of the nsttuton comes frst." Vrtually anyone would shrnk before such a job. Not only must the Councl re-ntroduce most students, n a knd of moral reformaton, to the concept of honor, whch has taken beatngs from Falstaff and others down to the present. t must also try to get them to affrm a sprt of true nsttutonal ntegrty n a tme of rapd nsttutonal decay. And as Dean Mullen ponted out at a meetng about the SJB, the honor system s the students-ours alone. We can congratulate ourselves f ts revtalzed; f t fals, n the famous words of Pogo, "We have met the enemy, and they s us." We hope, wth a note of desperaton, that the Councl members succeed n ther courageous attempt at revvng a sprt of corporate re.sponsblty. f they cant, students deserve to be treated n a landlord-tenant relatonshp. By JEAN BUTLER Staff Wrter Although Wakes frst junor varsty football game n hstory wll go down as a loss, the Baby Deacs have a chance to even ther record Saturday nght when Lees-McRae nvades Groves Stadum. The kckoff s slated for 8:30. Monday, September 18th, was the date of the hstorc frst JV contest wth Wake gong down before N.C. States Woffets. The Womets scored two quck touchdowns n the frst perod, captalzng on Wakes early mstakes. N.C. States frst score came only 1:21 nto the game after the recovery of a Wake fumble on the Deacs 35 yeard lne. On the frst play from scrnunage, States flanker, Dan Moore, threw a 35 yard touchdown pass to Denny Salopek. Less than three mnutes later, the Woffets scored agan, once more as a result of a Wake fumble, ths tme recovered at the Wake 27 yard lne. After sx plays, State quarterback Joe Gles scored from the three-yard lne for the second Wolfpack score. Wth 5:06 remanng n the frst perod State added a feld goal by Ed Strckland. Wakes deepest penetraton n the frst half came mdway through the second quarter, when they got down to the State 16 yard lne. The drve ended once agan wth another Deacon fumble. State took the second half kckoff, moved 78 yards and scored agan on a 1-yard keeper by Pat Connolly. Wake then fnally started gettng thngs together, and the Deacs were able to hold onto the ball, movng 74 yards n 7:31 and puttng ther frst score on the board one second nto the fnal perod. After an ntercepton by Tm Fscher on the State 35, Wake ran sx plays, then scored on a pass from Andy Carlton to Rch McGure. Bunch booted the extra pont to make t Moments later, Wakes Danny Croom fell on a State fumble n the end zone for another Wake touchddown. Carlton threw to Frank Harsh for the 2-pont converson to brng Wake wthn two ponts at Wake had tme for another good drve and wth 1: 12 to make t to the State 17-yard lne. State then ntercepted a deflected pass, securng ther second vctory n as many starts. Wake led n the frst downs, 17-11, and also n net yardage, complng 264 yards to States 205. t was Wakes mstakes early n the game, however that cost the Baby Deacs the contest. Wakes rushng game was led by freshman Frank Harsh, who ganed 93 yards n 18 carres. Frosh Andy Carlton quarterbacked after junor Doug Macke was njured late n the frst perod. Carlton completed 8 of 17 pass attempts for 128 yards and one touchdown. Although dsapponted by the outcome, Carlton beleved the jayvees played well consderng they had practced together as a team only once. Wth the new NCAA rule now allowng fresh men to compete at the varsty level, both freshmen and upperclassmen practce together durng the week, and a J.V. team was drawn up at the last moment to challenge N.C. State. The Deacs got off to a- slow start, but "once we developed confdence n each other," Carlton sad, "we really started movng. t was a good team effort to come back after beng behnd Thats the best thng about t." Although the new rule allowng freshmen to play varsty has ts drawbacks, Carlton beleves that t wll prove to be benefcal to college athletcs. "ts -a e:ood rule", he sad, "because once n a whle youll have an exceptonal freshman that can really help the team." Head JV Coach Beatte Feathers commented on the new JV level by sayng, "Freshmen can now play varsty, whch awards a real outstandng freshman a chance to play at the varsty level." Feathers added "t gves a lot of guys who arent varsty materal a chance to play and provdes them wth an ncentve". Despte the fact that those. players who looked good n Mondays game wll be travelng to Tennessee for the varsty game tomorrow, Deacon coaches plan to leave enough talent behnd to assure a good game wth Lees-McRae Saturday nght. Carlton Replaces Macke, Leads Jayvee Comeback By BRUCE GARDNER Staff Wrter There were many surprses n the Baby Deacs near upset of N.C. State on Monday at Groves Stadum. One of the more pleasant of the surprses for Wake Forest football enthusasts was the fne quarterbackng job turned n by freshman Andy Carlton. Carlton entered the game when startng quarterback Doug Macke was njured n the frst quarter. t was the second half combnaton of Carltons adept passng and a stalwart defense that brought the Baby Deacs so close to upsettng the Wolflets. Carlton s from Leesburg, Fla., where he compled some rather mpressve honors. n hs senor year, Carlton receved All Regonal and honorable menton All-state awards. Such an accumulaton of lwards made Carlton a good Pr"ospect for college football, but he dd not sgn wth Wake untl early June. " was gong to enter West Pont," sad Carlton, "but at the last mnute decded to sgn wth Wake." He also had sold offers from Mam and Florda, but chose Wake because of ts "sze, academcs, and because Wake was lookng for a quarterback." Freshman Andy Carlton calls hs teacher, Larry Russell, "the best veer quarterback n the country last. year. Many asprng quarterbacks at Wake have problems adjustng to the veer offense. Ths was not a problem wth Carlton. "n hgh school, we ran the trple opton, whch s very smlar to the veer," Carlton sad. n the game Monday, Carlton showed great versatlty, both as an experenced operator of the veer and as a drop-back passer. Carlton was very hgh n hs prase of fonner Wake quarterback Larry Russell n helpng hm to learn the veer employed by Wake. He sad Russell was "the best veer quarterback n the country last year," and there s no better teacher than Russell. n adton, Carlton sad that Russell has been a "great help, because he knows the defenses used by conference opponents." When asked what he thought of the JV effort Monday, Carlton sad the team "fought hard, made a great comeback, and we just wouldnt qut." He feels the strong effort wll gve a tremendous boost to the squad for Saturday nghts game aganst Lees-McRae. t became a famlar sght n the State game to watch Carlton connect wth Rchard Carter on both long and short patterns. Carlton showed hs pose n two crucal thrd down and long yardage stuatons n the fourth quarter, both tmes connectng for substantal yardage to Carter. The frosh quarterback also lauded the efforts of the defense and the offensve lne n the second-half surge. "The defense gave us great feld poston nearly every tme, whch made t easer for the offense." The offensve lne was very sold, even n defnte passng stuatons. "n the second half wasnt even touched," sad Carlton. Andy Carlton s modest about hs football future at Wake Forest. He feels that t s too early to make any predctons n regard to next year. "Wake has some really fne quarterbacks who wll return next year," Carlton sad, "but plan to gve t my best effort."
