Fve EKU colleges, for nstance, are offerng a total of about 70 courses durng a sprng ntersesson May 15-June t. A two-and-a-half week ntersesson wll follow the summer school whch ends August. These, plus summer workshops, nsttutes, and semnars offered by the varous colleges are remnders that fguratvely EKU dormtory doors and academc portals reman open throughout the year. The campus does not present durng the summer an array of deserted buldngs and other facltes. Ths concepton of yeararound educaton was born as Kentucky became leu agrcultural and young men no longer demanded to be released from ther books durng the growng and harvestng Such events as Blue Grass Boys' State, a mock state and local government sesson sponsored by the Amercan Legon for hgh school junors and senors, help keep the summer campus actve. Ths year's Boys' State s set for June 3-9. A Cheerleader Clnc for hgh school cheerers s set for June and The Stephen Collns Foster Musc Camp for hgh school muscans wll be held June 18- July 25, featurng several outdoor publc concerts each week. A four-week tranng camp for hgh school Marchng bands s also held each summer. A Bookmen's Exhbt s set for June and a Drll Team Workshop for July All of ths summer actvty has ts mpact on the Rchmond Fne Arts Seres Features Noted Artsts And Speakers One of the roles of a major unversty-actng aa a cultural resource for the communty-s beng flled by Eastern. Eastern's Fne Arts and Lecture Seres s becomng one of Rchmond's chef cultural assets, presentng such noted artste and speakers as Alvn Toffler, Jose Greco and Hs Dancers, the troupe of the Kentucky Opera Assocaton, and others. The EKU departments of musk, art, and drama and speech are addng to the cultural lfe of the communty wth many programs featurng campus and vstng talent. Besdes Toffler, the Garvce Kncad Lecture Seres has brought to Rchmond such natonally and nternatonally known speakers as author Pearl Buck, Al Capp, anthropologst Margaret Meade, ndan stateswoman Madam V.L. Pandt. Ambassador Charles "Chp" Bohlen. and Jesse Stuart. Admsson s free to these lectures and the publc s nvted. The Fne Arts and Lecture Seres, along wth pop concerts that feature entertaners lke the Carpenters, Doc Severnson. and Smokey Robnson, s presented by the EKU Unversty Center Board, composed of students, faculty, and admnstratve members. The Board's programs are fnanced by student fees, pad durng regstraton, whch generally pay for the students' admsson. Many programs are free. The publc s admtted to all these programs, but students and faculty are admtted frst n case of an overflow audence. Other noted personaltes and programs presented by the Center Beard are Julan Bond, Ralph Nader, the Don Cossack Chorus and Dancers, the Preservaton Hall Jars Band, Amahl and the Nght Vstor, the Gaslght Theatre presentng the World of Rod McKuen. and John Chappeu n "Mark Twan Tonght." The next concert n the seres s aa appearance by Henry Mancn and hs orchestra, scheduled May 1 n Alumn Colseum. The program wll begn at 8 p.m. General Admsson s S, EKU students wth D'S, $3 The musc department presents frequent programs by ts symphony and concert bands and ensembles, plus student and faculty rectals. Smple Lfe Mac Davs, snger songwrter who beleves n the smple lfe appeared n concert, dressed n blue Kelhoffer, Crews Re-elected; Net 56 Percent n Votng BY DELMA FRANCS Sun Wrter The unoffcal tally of votes from yesterday's Student Government electons showed Chuck Kelhoffer and Sharon Crews of N.O.W. as the wnnng slate, takng the offces of presdent and vce presdent respectvely. Kelhoffer and Mss Crews won wth 56 percent of the votes as opposed to 29 percent for Abner and Cox of A.C.T..O.N. and Ramey and Reppert of R.P.P., S percent. Numercally the breakdown was as follows: Out of 3,5 total votes, Kelhoffer and Crews netted 1906; Abner and Cox; 1035 and Ramey and Reppert, 535. n a statement to the press mmedately followng the electon results Kelhoffer sad, "'d lke to thank the students fjthat went out and worked for me, the students that voted for me and all those who voted. thank the students for the confdence they have shown n me, and "thank them all for the "voter turnout." Mss Crews was unavalable for comment at ths tme. At press tme, due to a malfuncton of the computer, the votes for senators-at-large had not been talled. 'Whte Hall Revew' Set Ths Weekend The frst annual "Whte Hall Revew" wll be held Saturday and Sunday on the grounds of the newest state shrne north of Rchmond. The hghlght of the two-day event wll be a jaz concert at 2:00 p.m. Sunday. The 20-pece jaa band s composed of former members of many bg-name bands, ncludng Glenn Mller and Stan Kenton. Tom May of the musc faculty at Eastern wll be among the band members. May was formerly wth the Les Brown troupe. Arts and Crafts exhbts by over 250 artste from around the state begn at 9:00 a.m. and wll run all day Saturday. Dallas McKennon, "Cndnnatus" n the Danel Boone televson seres wll be on hand to present selectons from hs muscal "Kantuck." McKennon wll be accompaned by a small orchestra on Saturday and wll team wth the jazz group on Sunday. The award-wnnng Madson Central Hgh School band wll provde the entertanment for the frst day begnnng at 11:08 a.m. The Kentucky Long Rfle Assocaton wll perform Sunday n marksmanshp competton and the famous North-South skrmsh team wll re-enact the Battle of Rchmond at 3:00 p.m. Sunday. There s no admsson charge for the event, co-sponsored by the Madson County Hstorcal Socety and State Parks Department of Kentucky. The artsts and craftsmen wll be on hand to sell ther works both days. Cheerleader Tryouts Set Varsty cheerleader tryouts for the school year have been changed to Wednesday, Aprl 28, at 8 p.m. n front of the Weaver Health Buldng. D case of ran partcpants should go to Alumn Colseum. Those wshng to try out must attend cheerleader workshop clncs f they have not already done so. Clncs wll be held st the Begley Buldng (mddle gym) tonght and Monday from 8-8 p.m. Cheerleaders must not be on socal or academc probaton, must have completed at least one full semester, and be a fulltme undergraduate student next fall. Fve men and fve women cheerleaders wll be chosen for the squad. Applcatons wll be dstrbuted at the workshops. Peter Dawkns Awarded Top ROTC Fellowshp Sxty-nne Army ROTC cadets have been awarded fellowshps for graduate study at Army expense. Each fellowshp s valued from 820,000 to 825,000. Peter R. Dawkns, an Eastern Dstngushed Mltary Student, has been awarded a fellowshp. Those selected may do graduate studes for a master's degree n any feld for whch the Army has s requrement. Whle sttendlng graduate school the recpents wll receve full pay and allowances. Snce the fellowshps are ntended to provde the Army wth managers n an ncreasng number of specalsed actvtes, they are awarded to ROTC graduates who are accepted for Regular Army commssons and who plan to make the Army a career. The cadets, graduatng between May, 1972 and Aprl SO, 1973, wll be commssoned as second leutenants upon graduaton. Those selected for the fellowshps may attend graduate school mmedately after comng on actve duty followng ther graduaton from college, or defer ther studes untl they have completed one to fve years of troop duty. The fellowshp wnners nclude 3 cadets who are attendng college on ROTC scholarshps, and 28 nonscholarshp cadets who are desgnated as Dstngushed Mltary Students (DMS). Fellowshp wnners were among nearly 1,880 ROTC cadets who appled for Regular Army commssons followng ther college graduaton. More fellowshps may be awarded aa an Army selecton board consders addtonal applcatons for Regular Army commssons.

Seventy percent of all nfectons are n persons under the age of 25, and 35 percent are ncdent among theose under 20 years. n the sprng of 1970 County Judge Robert Stephens mplemented a program enttled "Operaton Venus" upon request of the Kentucky State Earth Week, 1972 Health Department. Judge Stevens contacted area hgh schools and health organzatons to help n donatng ther tme to buldng the "Operaton Venus" program. The teenagers attended specal tranng sessons sponsored by the Fayette County Health Department where they studed specfc aspects of venereal dsease. Due to dwm"*"g partcpaton of voulunteers and slackng off of phone calls, Operaton Venus needed hew vtalty. Unversty of Kentucky students became nterested n the program and through ther student government helped Operaton Venus establsh resdence at the Unversty of Kentucky. As a result, Operaton Venus grew n number of volunteers and grew n dversty of resources for the program. The hot-lne was mantaned, but there was an addton of new commttees concerned wth publc awareness and publc educaton that were put nto operaton. The commttees delt wth publc relatons and advertsng. They also gave presentatons to groups for the purpose of educatng them about VD. Wnner Makes Loudest Nose? s Ths year's Student Assocaton electon has had everythng from rado advertsements supportng the canddates to csmpag" cards and posters. Durng the last week of the race, however, the electon seemed to have become a battle of the bands, wth the canddates playng the "anythng you can do, can do better" game. Each of the canddates for the offce of presdent sponsored a band concert n the ravne on dfferent days. Apparently the thought behnd ths s the better the band.the more people t attracts. And the more people t attracts, the better chance the canddate has of gettng votes for hs tcket. The queston, however, s not whch band s the best. Why waste the effort needed for an mportant offce such as Student Assocaton presdent tryng to outdo the other canddates' bands. But then, there are some students who would vote for s canddate merely because he had a better band than hs opponents. Why should canddates have to resort to usng bands to lure people out to vote. Over forty people attended ths meetng, yet t was not consdered mportant enough to be covered n the student newspaper. However, dd fnd a szeable artcle on the hobby of cow watchng. Ths s drect proof of the sex dscrmnaton whch prevals over ths campus. Carl Nelsen, who ded at the age of 66 n 1931, s one of the more controversal composers of ths century, and hs opera "Saul and Davd" was a complete departure from the tradtonal operatc concept, where the story and musc shared equal mportance Nelsen stressed the musc n ths, hs frst opera, the story seemng to support the musc-a devaton from the popular operas of Verd and Wagner. Nelsen completed the opera n 1901 and t was frst performed by the Royal Opera n Copenhagen n Enar Chrstansen was the Lbrettst. The opera n four acts wth an Englsh translaton by Geoffrey Dunn tells the story of Saul and Dad, as wrtten n the Old Testatment, the frst and second books of Samuel. Members of the program have made appearances on varous talk shows n Lexngton. Kentucky Educaton Televson network presently has a natonally produced flm clp whch they wll broadcast n the future. Operaton Venus s also plannng to gve presentatons to those people n low ncome areas.these presentatons wll consst of basc nformaton concernng venereal dsease and are desgned to stmulate an actve nterest n VD preventon. Operaton Venus s a unque organzaton. ts members are from the same age group mat experences the greatest amount of venereal dsease (1 to 22). t s an organzaton opperated by youth for the preventon of a crtcal problem threatenng youth. The UK students should be commended for ther concern and tme devoted to Operaton Venus. They are provng that college students are not lmted to the college tself but are able and wllng to work wth the communty for mprovement. n Madson County such a program would be a great asset. Wth the lmted amount of physcans and medcal offcals t would dffcult to have such a program. However, Eastern students could solve ths problem. All t takes s enough people who are wllng to devote some of ther free tme to educatng and counselng ctzens about venereal dsease. Whether or not a program such as Operaton Venus wll materalze at Eastern depends on the students and the communty. However, a program such as ths could only better the communty and the campus-communty relatons. Symphonc Band Performs Sunday The Sprng Concert by the EKU Symphonc Band wll be presented on Sunday afternoon, Aprl 30th at :00 p.m. n the Hram Brock Audtorum on the Eastern campus. The band s under the drecton of Robert W. Hartwell, Drector of Marchng and Symphonc Bands. Featured on solosts wll be John Drew, a junor Bachelor of Musc Educaton trombone major from Lexngton. Stephen Johnson, a senor Bachelor of Musc Educaton trombone major from Oberln, Onto and Mchael Denns, a freshman Bachelor of Musc Educaton trombone major from Rchmond. They wll perform the "Concerto for Trombones" by Norman Leyden. Other works beng performed by the Symphonc Band are the "Symphony No. 3 for Symphonc Band" by Vttoro Gannn, the "Chcago Trbune March" by Chambers, and 'Two Symphonc Movements" by Vaclav Nelhybd. The baseball team was washed out of nne straght games durng the deluges of the past couple of weeks, ncludng four home games, and they'll try to make up two of them today and tomorrow. The golf team was raned out of ts scheduled acton here last weekend, and the tenns squad wasn't able to get n ts three matches, ncludng a scheduled trp to Murray last Frday. One of the teams, though, the track squad, managed to have ts Tuesday meet wth Cumberland fall on a good day, and the Colonel thnles made the most of t by stayng unbeaten wth an vctory. Charges Up South Central Bell had charged W.50 per phone each tme the unts were turned on, but now wants $18.75 for the same servce. For the Unversty, t means an addtonal expenae of $25,000 annually, accordng to Dr. Martn. Many KentuckJans wll face ths same problem when phones are connected n the future-not to menton general usage and long dstance rate ncreases. To students havng a phone n ther dorm room, ther $,50 per semester rate wll be upped to M.M. The new rates went nto effect on March 20 despte the protest of state Attorney General Edward Hancock, who mantaned they were excessve and unnecessary. Then there's another servcerelated problem: where to put Eastern's garbage? - Eastern has been payng $35,000 each year to have refuse hauled away. Presently, the new landfll ste negotated by the cty (wthout Eastern's knowledge) s twce as far from campua-aome 19 mles further away. Fee For Use A $7,00 annual fee for use of the new landfll ncreases even more the "coot of lvng" for the school-wth all the more regret for Eastau admnstrators. However, telephones and garbage are only part of t. The Kentucky General Assembly leved a severance tax on coal of four-and-one-half cents per ton durng the wnter sesson. t s wdely speculated that consumers wll bear the burden of the tax n the form of slghtly hgher charges for coal-the mneral beng a vtal commodty to Eastern. The Assembly also rased the gasolne tax two cents per gallon effectve July 1. The Unversty has no way around facng ths expense-nor do any other Central KentucUans. To top thngs off, Kentucky Utltes Company s talkng off an electrc power rate hke that could come at a consderable coat to Eastern. Perhaps Dr. Martn's bggest regret s the tuton rate ncrease, courtesy of the General Assembly, that students attendng Kentucky's state colleges and unverstes wll face ths fall, and agan n the fall of For n-state students, the ncrease amounts to $90 per semester, or $130 over the next two years. Out-of-etate students face an addtonal $37.50 n tuton per semester, makng $150 for the two yean. Summer school students wll pay $15 more n tuton, and even the prce of ntersesson wll go up. Martn Opposes Hke Dr. Martn strongly opposed the tuton hke, and has opposed smlar tuton ncreases passed on to students snce be became presdent of Eastern some 13 years ago. The extra cost of tuton hurts mddle class students the most, Dr. Martn explaned. Many students on fnancal ad have the ncrease taken care of n ther scholarshp.
