1 r V. Volume 27, Number 6 Marst College, Poughkeepse, N.Y. October 28,1982 College offcals justfy rule as school 'tradton 3 By Patt Walsh & Rck O'Donnell Last week, student affars admnstrators decded to launch a campagn to make students more aware of regulaton 9E n the handbook whch prohbts cohabtaton n college housng. Rev. Rchard LaMorte, assstant dean of student affars, sad that the decson was made as a result of several stuatons where students' rghts wth regard to ther rooms has been totally gnored. LaMorte also sad that questons about the new guest. pass polcy requred clarfcaton of the cohabtaton norm. Resdent drectors are now requred, before ssung a guest pass, to make sure that guests of the opposte sex wll not be stayng n the student's room overnght. Accordng to LaMorte, dscplnary. measures wll be followed f the cohabtaton norm s volated. LaMorte sad, "A resdent staff person should respond to ths norm as he would respond to any other norm." ( -^Gerard_Cox,;,dean.-..of, student.^affars,,, V >.sad;^-th5-wh-not:trc v sunv^^ndlof^wfch.'' T hunt. It wll be up to the resdent assstants' vjto use judgement, senstvty, and common sense." The RA's must exert judgement, accordng to LaMorte. "Ths s not a polce state," he However, gudelnes may be needed more than judgement, accordng to Karyn Magdalen, upperclassmen RA. "Some type of gudelnes should be set, because t would be" very hard for we as RA's to judge f the vstor s there for a whle or overnght," she "I don't feel that we should have to polce the stuaton." Mchael Bowman, resdence drector of NO OPINION YES NO NO OPINION Champagnat, sad, "RA's won't be knockng on doors, but f cohabtaton s brought to the RA's attenton, then t wll be dealt wth." Tradton was cted as the bass for college norms. Cox sad that tkel cohabtaton norm has been derved from Marst's Chrstan hertage. "I don't thnl norms are determned by vote," sad Cox. In response to The Crcle student opnon poll, whch shows a 97% opposton to the norm, LaMorte sad, "It's mportant to know, but I don't know whether that means the norm doesn't have a value." LaMorte added, however, "I don't thnk that f the rule was elmnated, there would be Sodom and Gomorrah." LaMorte sad that when a person asks to become part of a communty, wth t comes certan rghts and responsbltes. "There are stuatons where not all of them are agreeable to that person,".he LaMorte sad that any student lvng at Marst has agreed to lve under these norms. Admnstrators sajd that the nqrm.does "nonforcojrto^^ecsbts-upok^udekts^ '' It stooherkstltutor's responsfoltyjo determne moralty," sad Cox. Adrenne Ryan,"freshmen RA, sad, "If they are worred about sex, t's not gong to change anythng. I don't thnk the RA's are gong to enforce t." Cox sad that he does not beleve that the norm forces moral decsons on students, and that the ssue s beng blown out of proporton. Bowman sad that he does not feel that the norm s too restrctve. "There s plenty of leeway for students to develop frendshps and socal - sklls wthout volatng polcy, snce t only pertans to an overnght stay," he Students express concern over enforcement of norm By Bernadette Grey Queston 1: Do you feel the college should begn to enforce ths regulaton, and not permt cohabtaton? Queston 2: Have you ever had a member of the opposte sex spend the evenng n your room, whether t be frend, boyfrend/grlfrend, or brother/sster? Each new school year, Marst resdents are greeted by the smles of roommates, lengthy course outlnes, and Marst student handbook. Socalzng begns, classes get underway, and the student handbooks are dropped nto desk drawers and usually forgotten about. ~ Many resdents dug up ther student handbooks last week, n search of a regulaton prohbtng cohabtaton n resdence halls. Much to the surprse of many Marst students, there s such a polcy. Cohabtaton became a major ssue on campus last week after Marst admnstrators made the decson to enforce the regulaton n all campus housng. Ths polcy, whch forbds overnght vstors of the opposte sex, ncludng another Marst resdent, has rarely been enforced n the past. The overwhelmng majorty of resdents object to the college's nterference n the ssue of cohabtaton sayng t s a personal decson and should be left up to the ndvdual. ' ^^^puegeju^tudets.^^^^aturv'r'- n ; -^ dependerjvpeo'ple and have the rght to make ther own moral'decsons," sad senor Camlle Stbtz.' Elzabeth Murphy, a junor, also argues that cohabtaton s a decson based on the morals of adults. "Moralty s somethng we learn ourselves and the college should not be decdng on moral ssues for us," sad Murphy. "College s when we grow and make decsons for ourselves," she added. ; Many students sad that the college should only nterfere wth cohabtaton f another student s beng affected. "We should be able to have any overnght vstor as long as no one else s beng hurt," sad 78% 97% Pollng done by: Susan Brunner, Chrs Dempsey, Tony Phllps, Lou Ann Seelg, Holly Sraeel, Joanne Wynne. Nel Rohrer, a junor. Freshman Mke Banahan agreed and sad that the cohabtaton regulaton should not be enforced unless t gets to be a real problem wth the roommate. "More tme should be spent keepng the students actve and on campus on weekends," sad Jm MacDonald, a junor. MacDonald and other Marst resdents sad that the college regulatons are drvng everyone off campus and home on weekends. "I can just go home," Lyrne DNapol, a junor, sad when she learned that she could not have her boyfrend stay over for the weekend. Others sad that Catholcsm s wrongly beng reflected n ths campus polcy. "Keep the Church out of school," sad Murphy. Marst s not a Catholc school, but relgon s.playng a role n the decson makng that goes on at Marst, Chrstn Garrson, a senor, Many resdents do not understand why the college s concerned wth cohabtaton for reasons other than sexual. "If t s to stop sexual actvty, t wll not work," Dane Demarest, a junor, "Everyone \;can-stll-do t n.'the a'ftern6pn;tv:she-,s'adwth alaugh?' '»-^-- -^ - A rule lke that can never be enforced, some resdents say. "Cohabtaton, no matter how you try to stop t, wll go on,' Elzabeth Cooke, a junor Yet, some feel the college can enforce the polcy by allowng Resdent Advsors to check rooms. "The only way t can be enforced s by drectly nvadng our prvacy," sad Junor Susan Cavallo. MacDonald agrees and does not thnk that ths s a justfable reason for enterng a dormtory room wth a pass key. "They are takng away the prvacy of an ndvdual," sad MacDonald. "What wll they thnk of next?" Marst student poll By Rck O'Donnell The results of a student poll conducted by staff members of The Crcle are llustrated n the bar graph on the left. 450 students were polled, representng approxmatley one thrd of the total on campus populaton. The students were famlarzed wth regulaton 9E n the student handbook, whch states: Cohabtaton s not permtted wthn any college faclty. All students were chosen at random, and the poll was conducted between Thursday, Oct. 21 and Sunday, Oct. 24. The group of students were approxmately half male, half female. They lved n both freshman and upperclassman housng facltes. 97 percent of the students polled felt the cohabtaton regualton n the hand book should not be enforced. Only 2 percent of the students sad they wanted the regulaton to be enforced. In the second queston, 78 percent of the students polled have had a member of the opposte sex spend an evenng n ther room. 20 percent have not had a member of the opposte sex spend an evenng n ther room. Most of that 20 percent comprsed freshman students. Only 10 percent of upperclassman who were polled have not had members of the opposte sex spend an evenng n ther room. 19 percent of the students who sad the cohabtaton regulaton should not be enforced are students who have not partcpated n cohabtaton; however, they are stll aganst havng the regulaton enforced.

2 aj Page 2 - THE CIRCLE- October 28,1982 Readers Wrte October 28, THE CIRCLE - Page 3 Marst faculty vote on ROTC results n a te Cohabtaton cloud The front page of ths week's Crcle looks dfferent from those of the past. We are presentng an ssue whch, accordng to students at Marst, s an mportant part of lfe on campus. Thus, before we are accused of "blowng thngs out of proporton," we would just lke to say that we are dong our job as a newspaper servng our communty by provdng nformaton on the ssues whch are mportant to students. Why dd we devote the entre front page to one ssue? Because durng the past week, many dfferent rumors concernng cohabtaton have spread all over campus, causng some confuson as to what really s the truth. The cohabtaton norm s not new; t-has been n the handbook for a long tme. So, why the bg fuss? It s probably the most wdely gnored norm on the records and, accordng to The Crcle's pou, mo,st students " would"prefer that t reman that way. However, now ths norm s supposed to be enforced by the resdent staff, wth dscplnary acton for volatons. Now, we know that norms are not formed by popular vote but f a vote had been taken on any other norm, such as nose, vandalsm, cheatng, or even alcohol n the freshman dorms, the opooston would not have been as strong. That n tself means Locked out Ths letter s n response to the lock-ou? precedure outlned n a letter receved by all resdents a few weeks ago. I thnk that the majorty of resdents wll agree that two dollars each tme s a lttle bt steep for a mstake or two. Granted, f someone constantly locks themselves out a fne should then be mplemented upon them. Why should those few cost us all of our hard earned money because our roommate locked us out unaware that we were n the lounge or bathroom or on the phone? The resdence staff should be able to retan the rght to judge each partcular ncdent because there can be extenuatng crcumstances. On ths same subject, why should the R.A. on duty have to charge people at all? They go The Crcle Co-Edtors Assocate Edtors Sports Edtor Advertsng Manager Busness Manager News Edtor that the cohabtaton norm s qute dfferent from other Marst norms. It s a dfferent type of norm, too, because t deals wth a senstve topc. The college has made a stand that, because of Marst's hertage, cohabtaton s not permtted. But f 97% of the students who are Marst College dsagree wth ths norm, shouldn't that at least be consdered? Or wll ths just reman as a rule because that's the way t has always been? Many of us come from homes n whch certan rules are set up by whch we must abde. Marst has these rules, too the norms. But at home, as we get older, we have some nput nto the rules or at least we get to argue. The poll shows the students' opnons, but wll anythng ever change? Nether The Crcle nor Marst,College sanctons casual sex. The norm s. there bascally"fortre protecton of roommates, but t suggests that the college can make our moral decsons for us. That s not the ssue. The ssue at hand s whether or not our opnons have any bearng on the regulatons of the school. It s fne to state what a college stands for, but f 97% of the students don't beleve n that polcy, then there s obvously a dscrepancy between what we sav we are and what we do. on rounds every hour anyway. If a resdent was polte enough about t, I don't thnk they (the staff) would mnd takng a lttle detour every now and then as long as t wasn't a recurrng event for the same resdents. Concernng the amount of the fee, last year we were charged one dollar f our doors were unlocked by securty or a staff member. We were never made aware of any "betterment" n the halls for ths fee last year, so just what do the resdence drectors consder betterment? It mght help the resdents to accept these procedures f they knew where the money was gong. Anyway, can't the same results be accomplshed wth a one dollar charge? Some of us have to get by on a mnmum amount of money and as t s two dollars s a bt unreasonable, especally f t only happens once or twce. I hope the Resdence Drectors RckO'Donnell Patt Walsh Karen Lndsay Lou Ann Seelg Bll Travers Jm Barnes Adrenne Ryan Eleen Hayes wll reconsder ther poston on the lock-out precedures n a way that would be more far to the conscencous resdent students. I beleve any of us could have wrtten ths bcause we all feel ths way. I'll sgn ths... Advertsng Staff Classfed Reporters Cartoonst Emery Govannone All letters must be typed trple space wth a 60 space margn, and submtted to the Crcle offce no later than 6 p.m. Monday, Short letters are preferred. We reserve the rght to edt all letters. Letters must be sgned, but names may be wthheld upon request. Letters wll be publshed dependng upon avalablty of space.- Dear Edtor, Ths letter s n response to the charges ssued by Ed Kennedy to the ntramural program, specfcally flag football. Frst of all, Ed stated that ther were only eght school days untl the rosters for flag football were due. The fact s that we started class on the 31st of August and the rosters were due on the 14th of September. That's two weeks everyone had to hand n ther rosters. The reason that ths s done s because the best football weather s n September and the longer we wat on thngs lke rosters, we lose the great weather. If we wat lke last year we'll end up playng the playoffs n freezng temperatures. Another thng Ed complaned about was the lack of advertsments for the commuters that flag football was gong to start soon. Among our ten-team league ths year, there are seven teams that are comprsed of ether all, or a majorty of upperclassmen on ther team. On these seven rosters ther are 92 names. SIXTY of them are commuters and 32 are resdents. That s nearly a 2 to 1 rato n favor of the unnformed commuters. There are three teams made up of all freshmen, but we all know not too many freshman are gong to lve off campus. Even Intramurals f we add those three teams n, about half the league lves off campus. It was very noble of you, Mr. Kennedy, to offer your own tme to make up a new schedule, but that shouldn't even be necessary, because you ddn't have your roster n on tme. If we dd let you nto the league, all the other teams would have to accept the changed schedule. At the frst captan's meetng all the schedules were gven out. It would have wasted a lot of people's tme to meet agan and hand them a whole new schedule just because one team ddn't get ther roster, n on tme. It wouldn't have been far to the people who saw the sgns n each dorm and n the campus center, or even n the McCann Center. In general, Ed, your letter just sounds lke a bunch of sour grapes. Ten other captans were responsble enough to get ther rosters n, but you ddn't and you want to pass the blame on to someone else. And f you're concerned wth ths year's champon beng worthy enough, I'm sure ths year's wnner would love to gve your team a chance to defend your poston at the end of the season. Just follow the sgns. Mke Graney and Tm Grogan World Hunger Ths letter s.addressed to Marst students who would lke to make a dfference n the qualty of lfe on ths planet. On Saturday, November 20, a sx-hour "Brefng on World Hunger" wll take place on the Marst campus. Sponsored by Marst College and a natonal organzaton called "The Hunger Project/' ths event s one of several planned for the week of November 15-23, "World Hunger Week," to rase conscousness on the subject of world hunger. The "Brefng" s open to all members of the Marst communty on a reservaton bass only. It wll take place n Champagnat 248 and 248A from 9:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m., wth a one-hour break for lunch. There wll be no charge for ths event. Partcpants wll be nformed about the current stuaton regardng world hunger, about the varous msconceptons on the subject of hunger, about the remarkable progress that has been To Whom It May Concern: I would lke to address the subject of "cohabtaton." If I am not mstaken we are college students and should be treated as such. Partcpants wll also learn how each of us can make a contrbuton to such a world. The "Brefng on World Hunger" wll be lmted to seventy-fve partcpants and wll be led by Mr. Nathan Brenowtz, a representatve of "The Hunger Project." The major goal of "The Hunger Project" s the creaton of a world-wde commtment to end hunger on the planet n our tme. Havng myself partcpated n a "Brefng" Ted by Mr. Brenowtz ths past summer, I can tell you that ths experence s both deeply educatonal and nspratonal. I urge students to make ther reservatons early by callng me at extenson 290, or my secretary Joy Kudlo at extenson 400. On Saturday, November 20, seventy-fve members of the Marst communty wll have an exceptonal experence. Yours sncerely, Dr. Mlton Techman be up to the partes nvolved to decde what s "moral" or respectful. The, faculty and student atttudes towards the R.O.T.C. program wll be presented to the Marst board of trustees at t's meetng on Nov. 6 by Ted Prentng, charman of the faculty, and Joan "Schatze" Gasparovc,- student body presdent. Accordng to Dean of Students Gerard Cox, after all nputs have been taken nto consderaton, the board wll make t's fnal decson. The plenary sesson was the fnal gatherng of the faculty to dscuss the subject of R.O.T.C. Accordng to Cox, a proposal to allow the program on campus was presented to the faculty at the begnnng of last May; The faculty sad they fe!t'the ssue needed more tme for dscusson. Durng ths semester, ther have been two faculty colloquum where faculty members were gven the opportunty to voce ther ndvdual opnons on the subject. The major concern of those opposed to the R.O.T.C. program beng on campus, accordng to dscusson that took place at the last colloquum on Sept. 17, was that the program would change the atmosphere and mage of the Marst communty. Proponents of the program argued that the students' freedom of choce should be consdered. The R.O.T.C. program, accordng to the proposal, would consst of a four-year sequence of courses offered on the campus by mltary personnel to those students who wsh to take part n the program. Accordng to Cox, no academc credt wll be gven for these courses. Scholarshps are avalable and R.O.T.C. students would only be requred to wear ther unforms to the mltary classes sad Colonel Herbert Segel, a speaker at the last colloquum. A second forum wll be held on Nov. 1, whch wll gve students an opportunty to hear speakers from both sdes of the ssue. At the end of the forum, accordng to Cox, a survey wll be handed out to the students n order to get ther opnons on paper. The surveys wll not be gven out to all Marst students, only those who attend the forum. "By only gvng the surveys out to students who have expressed enough nterest to attend the forum," sad Cox, "we wll be guaranteed that they are nformed on the matter and have been able to reach ther own concluson." Presently, the Marst students who are cadets n the R.O.T.C. are holdng ther meetngs at a reserve center n Poughkeepse, accordng to Paul Peterson, a cadet and Marst student. Peterson sad he was surprsed that there were so many faculty opposed to the program comng to Marst. "I beleve they are thnkng and actng n ther own nterest rather than n the nterest of the students and the future of the school" If the board of trustees votes n favor of the program, mltary classes would begn at Marst ths November, accordng to Peterson. Where the canddates stand on major ssues The race for senator By Ivan V. Navas The race for the Senate seat s between Sen. Danel Patrck Moynhan, a Democratc-Lberal who s seekng hs second term, and Assemblywoman Florence M. Sullvan, hs challenger from the Republcan-Conservatve and Rght to Lfe Partes. The followng s a summary of the canddates platform on varous ssues. Included s a phone conversaton on behalf of Sullvan on the ssue of student loans, whch was on Tuesday, October 19,1982. Defense Spendng Moynhan favors a 5 percent real ncrease every year for defense spendng. Sullvan supports the strengthenng of the natonal defense forces wthout makng cuts n the defense budget. Sullvan sad she beleves our defense n nuclear and conventonal weapons s nferor, whle Moynhan sad he beleves our defense s superor. Federal Defct Sullvan favors a balanced-budget, amendment. "I 'thnk we have to start addressng the problem now n lght of the massve defct that we have," she Moynhan's response to the queston on how to solve the budget defct, called for two actons to be made. "If you brng down nterest rates, you brng down the cost of the debt," he "And secondly, we've got to get us back down from double-dgt unemployment." Student Loans On the ssue of student loan cutbacks, Alan Roth, drector of research for Sullvan sad, "Florence Sullvan's poston s that she s opposed to cuts of student loans. She also beleves very strongly of gong after those people who do not pay back ther student loans, snce ths costs the people and future people who seek loans." In a poston paper on educaton, Moynhan spoke out aganst cuts n grants and guaranteed student loans for undergraduate and graduate students for programs n the Mddle Income Assstance Act and the Educaton Amendments of Socal Securty - Moynhan cted unemployment as the man problem of the Socal Securty system. "The outgo of the retrement system s not permanent, t's not fxed," he "The ncome fluctuates and the ncome, beng dependent on employment s down very badly." Sullvan suggested that the retrement age for Socal Securty be rased to allevate the problem. Death Penalty Moynhan and Sullvan both are n favor of the death penalty. Moynhan specfed "rare crcumstances" under whch th% death penalty would be admnstered. Aborton Sullvan s opposed to Medcad fnancng of abortons and s n favor of an ant-aborton amendment. Moyhnhan s n favor of fnanced abortons and aganst an ant-aborton amendment. 3 Page4 THE CIRCLE October A segment of hstory to be brought back By Matthew Mclnerny Wooden beams, whch were once covered wth flowng vnes, currently resemble overszed pck-up stcks on brck pllars. The four-foot deep Romanesque fountan now contans a foot of stagnant water sprnkled wth leaves and empty beer cans. The naked statue n the center has had ts left arm crudely amputated. The walls and benches of the concrete pavllon, where frends of Fredereck Vanderblt once sat vewng hs Italan Garden, today bear the names and ntals of ntruders wshng to leave ther mark for all others to see. Vanderblt's once flourshng flower beds, constructed n 1897 and now belongng to the Unted States government, show the sgns of neglect, largely due to an underszed staff and a lack of suffcent funds. But the Natonal Park Servce n Hyde Park, N.Y., whch oversees the Vanderblt Manson, recently obtaned a federal grant of $500,000 for restoraton and stablzaton of structures n the garden. Susan Brown, assstant curator for the Hyde Park offce, sad the grant wll cover the stablzaton of brck and concrete work on the garden. The Hyde Park offce also handles the F.D.R. Home and Lbrary and Bellefeld Park Offces. It has taken nne years for.the Hyde Park -offce to acqure ths grant from the government. Electve computer courses gan n popularty By Bran Kelley October 28, THE CIRCLE Page 5 < form alcohol awareness task force Many Marst students enjoy gong out and havng a few drnks on the weekends but very few know about the Alcohol Awareness Task Force on campus. Anne Keatng, charman of the program, ard the other people nvolved are tryng to change that. "We're tryng to do just what the ttle says rase awareness," Keatng "We don't want to preach to anyone, we just want to make people aware of the problems that alcohol can cause." Keatng, who s a junor, sad there are approxmately ten people on the task force. There are students and even a college jantor en the the task force. "Rght now we're workng on a report whch we wll gve to the admnstraton that wll state our goals and gve recommendatons," she Last year, the task force organzed an Alcohol Awareness Week, whch Keatng sad was successful. Ths year the group wouldjke to get a polceman to stand outsde the Pub and gve a breathalyzer test to anyone who would be wllng to take t. Accordng to Keatng, the task force was formed n the sprng 1981 semester by nterested student leaders. In the frst three weeks of school ths semester, there were fve alcohol-related njures on campus. That's really somethng to worry about," Keatng She also sad that the group s workng on a request that would ask the bartenders n the Pub not to serve people who are already ntoxcated. Farley blames drnkng n fall By Bran Kelley. Patrck Farley, the sophomore who suffered severe njures sx weeks ago when he fell off a clff by the rver, sad that drnkng was responsble for the accdent. "I never would have tred to clmb down that clff n the dark f I hadn't been drnkng,'' Farley As a result of the fall, Farley suffered serous lver damage and laceratons on hs face and head. He also fractured hs jawbone, cheekbone, and both bones surroundng hs eye sockets. He receved a total of ffty-fve sttches. He was out of school for two weeks; seven days n the hosptal and seven at home. Farley spent one-and-a-half days n the ntensve care of St. Francs hosptal. No one can argue that Farley s a lucky man. "After I fell.two of my frends, Dan Spuhler and Chrs Burke, found me lyng n the rver. Dave Gregory, another frend of mne, went to notfy the polce.'' Farley was taken to St. Francs hosptal, where doctors attended to hs external njures. However, hs blood pressure kept droppng, so an exploratory operaton was performed. The njury to hs lver was dscovered durng ths operaton. "The mpact of the rocks aganst my abdomen caused my lver to splt open," Farley "I lost four pnts of blood." Farley sad that drnkng s not wrong, but that t makes people thnk they can do thngs that they can't normally do. "Once you start drnkng a lot you really begn to lose track over how much you've had,'' he "It's nterestng to come back to Marst and hear about all the rumors that went around. Someone told me that they had heard I was paralyzed from the neck down, and other people thought I was on drugs," Farley The blood test that was performed at the hosptal showed a hgh alcohol content (3.0), but showed there were no drugs n Farley's body. "I can't drnk agan untl Chrstmas," he "I'll stll drnk, but not nearly as much, and I'll probably keep t ndoors." More letters "There's a New York State Law that makes t unlawful for bartenders to serve people who are already drunk. How many tmes have you seen someone who can barely walk go up to the bar and stll get served?" Keatng Keatng sad she feels that much of the vandalsm and personal njury that occurs on campus s a drect result of alcohol abuse. "Alcohol abuse does much more than cause personal problems," Keatng "People have broken wndows here whle beng drunk, fghts have broken out and a lot of other thngs happen when people are ntoxcated that just wouldn't happen f they were straght," she added. "Some people just don't know when to stop," she "They use alcohol on a steady bass n order to releve ther tensons. The only peoblem s that the patterns that are set here wll contnue when we leave." Accordng to Keatng one out of every fve people drvng on the weekend s ntoxcated, and one out of every ten durng the week. She sad the task force's man goal s to nform, not to counsel. "We can refer people to Alcoholcs Anonymous and smlar agences, but we're not traned to deal wth alcoholcs, Keatng "A drnkng problem s somethng that does not come about over nght," she "It s developed over a long perod of tme. A Concerned Student R.O.T.C.I ToTheEdtor: On Frday afternoon October 22 the faculty of Marst College voted on the ntroducton of the ROTC. I voted No. What s needed n the Unted States today s not more mltarsm, certanly not more mltary expendture at the expense of the needy. The USA s already vewed n many parts of the world, n Central Amerca, n South Amerca, n Afrca, as a mltarstc power ntent.on world domnaton, mltarly and economcally. Ths s not the mage of my country I wsh to contnue to project.' The Amercan solder abroad s, unfortunately n too many cases, the worst of the "ugly Amercans." It was heartenng to read n the NY Tmes (Oct. 15, p.24) that the army recruts are now about 85% hgh school graduates, nstead of hgh school dropouts. How urgently the mltary needs college-educated personnel I wll not deny. My problem wth the ROTC s that t does not go far enough n tryng to solve our problem. It seeks only a mltary soluton. Isn't brute force always the easest, the frst recourse? What I beleve my country needs s a year, or two, of natonal servce from all ts ctzens. AH men and women, equally between the ages of, say, 18 and 22, should be requred to gve that mnmal part of ther lfe to servce of ther country. Ths servce could be mltary, f the people choose. Or t could be n the Peace Corps, or Vsta, or n whatever new or revved forms of natonal servce wll be desgned (WPA? CCC?...). Immense benefts from a year or two of such natonal servce would accrue to both the ndvdual and the country. Indvduals would have the opportunty-to mature by means of geographc and socoeconomc mxng, by on-the-job tranng, especally by selfless devoton to a cause outsde themsleves. Benefts now reserved exclusvely for the mltary can be extended to cover all ctzens, and thereby mllons of young men and women would earn money for college or for startng out n lfe. The country also would beneft greatly. Necessary work projects would fnally get done wth mnmal labor costs, unemployment would be eased, the poor and the elderly would receve sympathetc help and care; most mportantly, the country would gan mature, concerned ctzens. - ' - Ths s what I want Marst College.to promote. A total vson. Not a partal mltarstc one. Not a self-vested economc one. New Platz turned down the ROTC; and Vassar holds a weeklong - symposum on Nuclear Dsarmemant. And Marst votes for the mltary? Bro. Joseph L.R. Belanger ROTC II On Monday, 1 November, the councl of Student Leaders wll conduct ts second student forum on the proposal to establsh an R.O.T.C. program on our campus as a voluntary, non-academc actvty for both men and women. Before someone calls "sacrlege" over the forum beng held concdentally on All Sants Day, I want to assure all readers that C.S.L.'s forum s not an act of rreverence. However, the concdence s perhaps fortutous. All Sants (All Hallows) Day, despte the tradtonal antcs of. the evenng before, s a specfc remnder of our hertage just as are many other days of relgous observance. Hertage s the product of collectve efforts. It s a product of the past whch challenges us n the present. Indvdually, we may dentfy wth all or some of the components of our hertage but ndvdually or collectvely we cannot deny what that hertage s: a legacy passed from one group to another, generaton by generaton. In the dscussons to date of the R.O.T.C. proposal, not nfrequently have we heard statements ndcatng that any allance wth. ~ the mltary jvould be n conflct wth our hertage. All Sants Day, as a remnder of part of our hertage, suggests that we pause to consder the lves of those who have contrbuted sgnfcantly to our hertage. Mchael, Davd, Jason, Danel, Ruth, Rachael, Paul, Anne, Mary, Stephen, Rchard, Margaret, Joan, Lous, Edward, Francs, etc. each s part of our hertage. Each brought to hs or her moment n tme an extraordnary optmsm founded n a system of belef whch enabled the ndvdual to see farther and understand more completely the challenges of the tmes. Personal lmts were not lmtatons when one had fath. Is ths not the message of Francs of Asss as welf as Joan of Arc, Tom Dooly as well as Martn Luther Kng? Is t not the meanng of Marcelln Champagnat's favorte psalm? Beleve that one person n the rght place at the rght tme can make a great dfference. Have fath n one another and n the enterprse n whch we engage on ths campus. Beleve that we ndvdually and collectvely have a treasure to share wth future generatons and that Marst's degrees can serve as our symbols, our sgns of hope to those entrapped by pessmsm and cyncsm. The dscussons over R.O.T.C, whatever the outcome, should help us to better understand ourselves, our hertage and the msson of ths nsttuton. Lsten, dscuss, and then make an nformed decson. Sncerely yours, Gerard A. Cox Homecomng floats I As people nvolved n the homecomng here at Marst, we would lke to express our reactons to the event. They sad t would be "fun," and would provde the nvolved clubs wth a sense of unty. However, one pencl later, we can honestly say that homecomng fell somewhat short n meetng these goals. We don't deny that the dea of homecomng was a good one and that we were ntally excted at the prospect of buldng our float, but as tme progressed we realzed that exactly what was expected of us was very unclear. For example, two clubs - ncludng the Junor Class - were sent out for tralers.only to fnd that they y/erc broken and could not be used for our floats. Ths caused problems for us snce our orgnal dea depended on the use of a traler. We also feel that the money spent on the floats dd lttle to promote unty snce so few people were actually nvolved n ther constructon. The apathy expressed by our class was dscouragng, and we are sure that we were not alone n experencng ths. Perhaps n the future more people would be nvolved n homecomng f t was better organzed and planned. In closng, we would lke to express our sncere apprecaton to the few people who took the tme to help us out wth our float. Barbara LaDuke Maryn Magdalen (Junor Class Offcers) Homecomng floats II It seems, to us that people at Marst are very wllng to sgn up for somethng, but more reluctant to help out when the tme comes around. Along wth about thrty other people, we thought that we would get nvolved and help out wth the Sophomore Class float. When the buldng tme arrved, how many people of the thrty made an appearance? Nne ncludng two non-sophomores. As a result, the Sophomore Class float wasn't as good as orgnally planned; and was, n our book a waste of $ We're tred of hearng excuses. Ferdco appled for a lcense to start hs own prvate nvestgatng company but was refused by the state. He was also turned down by I.B.M. Corp. because of hs dsablty. Accordng to Ferdco, he couldn't fnd a job because "nobody wants an uneducated P.I." Wth hs brother Peter keepng on hs back to go back to school, Ferdco took the General Equvalency Dploma test on Jan. 9, He compled 248 ponts out of a possble 300 to earn hs hgh school dploma. Hs brother was nstrumental n hs decson to attend Marst. "Peter and hs wfe both graduated ; from Marst wth phlosophy degrees. He now works for Marst wth nmate educaton," Ferdco He s majorng n Busness Admnstraton, clamng he's had enough polce work. "They (regstrar's offce) wanted to put me n crmnal justce because of my background, but I wanted to study busness. They sad 1 could get around 40 credts because of my background," he Accordng to Ferdco, he s takng some "tough courses." Economcs, phlosophy, populaton and world resources, socology and appled learnng technques comprses hs schedule. Lke most new students, Ferdco has had trouble adjustng to some courses. "Phlosophy s a lot of double talk. It's my fault I don't understand some thngs. But the professor explans the problems to me and I understand them a lttle better," he Economcs s hs toughest course, he admts. "On my md-term I got a C, but the mean was 50, so that s good." "I'm dong well for a guy who has been out of school so long. But snce the tme I went to school, educaton has excelled," he For Ferdco, gettng back n the groove of school has taken a lot. He credts "everybody at.marst" for beng a bg help. From the grls n the regstrar's offce and fnancal ad, to hs professors and fellow students, he has nothng but prase. There s somethng that goes along wth beng an older person n classes. "It doesn't feel good to be the oldest, because kds feel I should know more," he There are some thngs he does know thngs he has taught hmself. He's learned Spansh and Italan on hs own. "I needed t for work," he Work wll be n the back of hs mnd as he contnues hs educaton. Hs bggest worry s whether there wll be a job openng for hm at age 52. But hs ultmate goal s to acheve a bachelor's degree, maybe a master's, and then search for work. Ferdco loves school and he's "sorry" he ddn't get here sooner. And, as he told hs doctor why he was gong to school, "I would lke to graduate before I drop dead." ;pf. 5 Page 8- THE CIRCLE October 28,1982«Backstage Pass by Rck O'DonncU October has been qute a month for Marst College rock fans. On the statewde level, The Who has performed n New York and Buffalo. At the local level, The Md-Hudson Cvc Center wll be hostng Peter Gabrel and Men at Work next week. Fnally.on the campus level, RCA recordng artsts, 805, headlned a concert n the Marst cafetera last weekend. The Who have strred up all the publcty that had just fzzled out from the recent Rollng Stones tour of Amerca. However The Who s dong ther "farewell' tour, so that allows them to charge no less than $15 a tcket. By the tme most fans got a tcket n ther hand they more than lkely had to pay close to $40 to profteers who are far from real Who fans. The lneup s the same as The Who that performed the last tour. The New York shows, and the Buffalo shows were outdoors; ths nsured the promoters of makng bg bucks. As a matter of fact concert promoter Jm Koplck was gong to have The Who play at the Hartford Cvc Center on December 9, but the show faled to materalze because the promoter wasn't gong to get enough money. The Who s an excellent band to catch n concert, but no band s worth the money that The Who has been drawng n. When I was presented wth the opton of buyng Shea Stadum ". tckets for $35, I was the frst person to say "farewell" to The Who. Let's hope there sn't another "farewell" tour n three years; then the tckets wll probably be prced n the hundreds. Two excellent shows are n store for the Md Hudson Cvc Center. On November 1 Peter Gabrel, former lead snger of Geness, wll be performng at the Cvc Center. Gabrel left Geness back n 1974, and has contnued to receve approval from crtcs throughout hs four-album solo career. Hs most recent album Securty s dong well on the album charts, and so s the album's sngle, "Shock the Monkey." Men at Work s slated to play the Cvc Center on November 5. When the Cvc " GewfTstfeooV:edMen at Work t was 'jfc& / questonable whether or not $8.50 n advance and $9.50 at the door was a lttle too steep. The show has been sold out snce last Frday afternoon, so the prce must be rght. The show wll be general admsson, and a gant dance floor wll be provded. Snce the show was scheduled, Men at Work has scored a number one sngle wth "Who Can t be Now," and a top ten album wth Busness as Usual. Men at Work has been sellng out shows all over Amerca snce they left Fleetwood Mac's recent tour as a warm-up act. A recent Vancouver show sold out 13,000 seats, somethng that even Fleetwood Mac has to cross ther fngers to acheve. Ths Australan band wll surely score just as well wth the Amercan audence as The Lttle Rver Band, Ar Supply and Rck Sprngfeld have done n the past. Even Marst College sponsored a concert n the past week. RCA recordng artsts 805, a progressve rock band from Syracuse, N.Y., performed n the Marst cafetera. The admsson prce for ths show was only $ sounds very close to a cross between Geness and Steely Dan, wth a lttle Asa thrown n. On ther debut album, Stand n Lne, they dsplay the qualty of beng able to cut crsp progressve songs that never extend over fve mnutes. However, ther strong pont on vnyl s all but mssng n ther lve show. The cuts from the album were performed well, but 805 came to Marst wth an hour's worth of good, tght musc, and tred to spread t over a two-hour span. The jams between songs got long, and ths, combned wth the audence's unfamlarty wth 805's musc, left many empty seats by the end of the concert, ncludng mne. I would rather have had Marst judge 805 by gvng Stand n Lne a chance on the turntable, rather than have to st through two hours of musc that lacked focus. I'm afrad that after two hours of sttng on hard cafetera seats watchng 805, the only lastng mpresson Marst had of the band was a sore backsde. But all thngs consdered, the specal effects, and the tmes.the band dd sparkle made the show well worth the prce of admsson.- COOP AT MARIST COLLEGE ACCOUNTING STUDENTS! ' "It s very mportant for the students to understand ther roots, especally n today's homogenzed socety," sad Dr. Barbara Lavn, an assstant professor of poltcal scence. Dr. Lavn has already won approval for the frst course n an Irsh studes program. "The Hstory and Poltcal Culture of Ireland" could combne wth the proposed "Irsh Lterature" and "Irsh Art up to 1400 A.D." to form the nucleus for a mnor n Irsh studes, accordng to Dr. Lavn. The Currculum Commttee, composed of three faclty members, wll meet Jan. 15 to decde the program's fate. "There are also non-irsh students who are nterested n studes because of the sgnfcant mpact of Ireland n the world, partcularly n Amerca's past hstory," sad Jance Casey, an asstant professor of Englsh who wll teach the proposed Irsh Lterature course. Dr. Lavn's course, to be offered next semester, wll cover; prehstorc Ireland, the nvasons from the 9th to 16th centures of the Vkngs, Anglo-Normans and Englsh and the troubles facng Ireland today. Dr. Lavn sad that her course s a "survey course" and her great hope s that, "as the Irsh studes expand, we wll be able to develop more out of the present program." The development of more courses wll be needed before a mnor can be offered. Accordng to Don Eustace, a former presdent of the Gaelc Socety, t wll take 12 to 18 credt hours to consttute a mnor. Eustace, a junor, s credted by the many nvolved n the program as the "gudng force" n establshng an Irsh studes at Marst. The producton covers happenngs such as the 1918 flu epdenc n Baltmore and the famly hardshps and trumphs experenced durng the Depresson. The play s wrtten about sx ethnc groups from Baltmore (South Baltmore, Park Heghts, Lttle Italy, Hghlandtown, Old West Baltmore and Hampden) n the early 1900s. However the dalog s taken from "real words of real people," accordng to publcatons released from the company. Accordng to Wlma J. Burke, drector of the regonal hstory programs at Marst, "The play may be applcable to any cty n the Unted States. Baltmore s only a case study." Two workshops wll be held next Thursday by the actng company. The frst workshop deals wth getherng and nterpretng hstory. The second workshop deals wth creatve wrtng and audo-vsual technques of presentng hstory. The frst workshop wll be from 9:55 to 10:45 a.m., and the second workshop wll be n the free slot from 11:20 a.m. to 12:45 p.m. v -.'. ' Accordng to Burke, the group of actors wll be on campus two days todalog wth students and go nto more depth on subjects dscussed n the workshops and the play. Burke sad, "Ths group wll offer help to hstory students as well as creatve wrters and drama students." The "Voces" offer a new way to vew the study of hstory by jonng drama and hstory. The "Voces" base the show upon publc hstory. Accordng to Burke, publc hstory ^ A can be defned as academc hstory that s altered enough to be presented n an nterestng and clear manner to people who are not deeply nvolved n the study of hstory. Whle publc hstory s attuned to the communty member, academc hstory s amed at professonal hstorans. Burke sad that professonal hstorans are now workng closer wth publc hstorans, as n the case of the Voces Repertory Company, n order to brng hstory closer to the general publc. Burke sad, "The study of hstory s begnnng to change n the publc eye as.t s ganng more respect and acceptance.lt used to be that the local hstoran of a town was the lttle old lady who wore tenns shoes, but now that's changng." October 28,1982 THE CIRCLE Page 11' Malet ponts to mental errors for 2-4 record by John Petacch It may be the most over used word to descrbe the Marst football team ths year, and t has plagued the team all year long. Inconsstency, accordng to Red Fox Head Coach Mke Malet, has been the Red Foxes' bggest foe so far ths season: "It sounds repettous, but t's true we've been nconsstent n all aspects of our game all year long," says Malet. "Our offense and defense have both played well at tmes and have not played well at tmes. It's frustratng for the coaches and the players knowng v/e've come so close so many tmes." The Foxes, 2-4 overall and losers of ther last two games, could easly be 5-1, but mstakes, mostly mentally accordng to Malet, have prevented a wnnng season to date. Two weeks ago, aganst a tough Fordham team, Marst held the Rams scorelss n the frst half only to gve up 28 thrd quarter ponts and end up losng Marst's only score came on a last-second touchdown pass from Jason Hawkns to Kent Charter to avod a shutout. Ths past Saturday, Marst lost ther second straght, to RPI n a nonconference game. It looked as f Marst mght have an easy wn early n the game when Randy Rosand threw a 55-yard touchdown pass to Warren Weller off an 'What happened n the RPI game s what has happened four tmes ths year we had our ups and downs and faled to play 60 mnutes of sold football. Mke Malet opton play on Marst's frst possesson. But RPI came back to put together three long touchdown drves and pulled ahead Marst had one last chance. They took the ball wth 40 seconds remanng n the game and t appeared they mght pull t out, but a last-second Cleary pass to Mke Strange was droped. What should have been a Marst touchdown turned nto ther thrd loss by fve ponts or less. Ron Dmme scored hs sxth touchdown on a 10 yard run, and Cleary scored hs ffth, also on a run, for the other Marst scores., "What happened n the RPI game s what has happened to us four tmes ths year we had our ups and downs and faled to play 60 mnutes of sold football," says Malet. "It's frustratng from a coach's standpont knowng we are capable of playng four quarters of good football, as we dd aganst St. Peter's and Brooklyn, but our errors cost us." It's dffcult to fgure out why the Foxes Injures plague basketball team Four members of the Marst basketball team are recoverng from njures that have kept them from practce, whch offcally began Oct. 15. The most serous njury s to Steve Eggnk who underwent surgery for a hernated dsc. The operaton was a success, but he s expected to mss the entre season. '.' have been so erratc, when so many players have played well ndvdually. Malet cted Jm Cleary, Warren Weller, Andy Coppa, Bran Sewng, Jm Creech, Steve Boeckln and Jm Van Cura for ther fne play ths year. "That's not to say the other guys haven't been playng well because they have, but what t comes down to s playng well as a team and puttng together 60 mnutes of super football," Malet says. Statstcally, Marst s havng one of t's fnest years n the team's hstory. Ron Dmme, wth 394 yards rushng and sx touchdowns, needs only 81 yards to break hs own rushng record set last year and two more touchdowns to surpass hs own personal best of seven touchdowns. Jm Cleary has completed 34 of 81 passes, for 527 yards and fve touchdowns whle throwng only one ntercepton. He has rushed for another 234 yards and fve touchdowns. Both back-up quarterbacks, Randy Rosand and Jason Hawkns, have also thrown touchdown passes. Warren Weller made the Marst record book aganst RPI catchng sx passes for 134 yards. On the season, he has caught 15 passes for 340 yards and needs only sx more yards to break the record for most yards by a recever. On defense, freshman Peter Moloney leads n tackles wth 30, followed by Bran Sewng wth 29 and Bll Wegand wth 24. Steve Boeckln has ntercepted three passes, whle fve others have ntercepted a pass each. Opposng teams have completed just 40% of ther passes aganst a stngy Marst secondary, and the Foxes-have held opponents to 895 yards on the ground. Marst wll play Pace Unversty at Pleasantvlle ths Saturday, and f they wn, not only wll they be sttng pretty n the conference, but t wll be Marst's best record ever under Coach Malet's regn. Besdes Pace, Marst has two more games left to play and Malet sees fatgue as one possble reason for the mental mstakes the team has made. "It has been tough workng around mdterm week and returnng from break, and the kds may be a lttle tred. Most of our mstakes have been mental mstakes wth people forgettng ther assgnments and t could possbly be the frustraton of knowng they could have won, but ddn't," Malet says. "Maybe we're not qute mature enough to get over the hump," Malet adds, "but there s defntely a good nucleus of a sold football team. Compared to last year, we are a much better team and the atttude s 1000% better than any team I have ever coached." EXTRA POINTS: Marst wll be wthout two of ther startng runnng backs, Jm Dowd and Mke Spawn, for the rest of the season. Spawn has left the team and Dowd has renjured hs left shoulder. Marst plays Adelph at home n a nonconference game Saturday at 1 p.m. Seton Hall scored ther only goal at the 10:14 mark of the frst half, when Marst goale Henz Warmhold was drawn away from the net and Seton Hall's Ken Cavello scored on a pass from Steve Vonlndern. Marst ted thngs up at the 19:39 mark, when Wayne Cargll eluded the Seton Hall defense and scored wth an assst from Tto Daz. Two mnutes later Marst took the lead for good as Cargll scored agan, wth an assst from Bob Cooper. Marst added an nsurance goal at the 31:27 mark on,mkeiteowuger.!s goal wth an assst from Mark Adams. Marst added ts fourth and fnal goal as Daz booted the ball home past the Seton Hall goalkeeper at the 11:18 mark. Two mnutes later Marst's Ian Arscott had apparently scored the Red Foxes' ffth goal. The goal was dsallowed a "questonable off-sdes call," accordng to coach Dr. Howard Goldman. Mdway through the second half, Seton Hall brought n Augustne Uzodke, the only female member of the squad. Uzodke dd not help though, as Marst kept the ball n Seton Hall terrtory and held on to ther 4-1 lead. ^ Goldman called hs team's play "skllful." He sad, however, he was dsapponted that the team faled to captalze on more of ther scorng oportuntes. In the St. Peter's game Greg Shvely scored two goals and Cargll had one, whle at West Pont Cargll scored both goals. Scorng totals for the game were: Cargll two goals; Terwllger one goal; Daz one goal, one assst; Cooper and Adams an asss each; Warmhold and Thalen one save each. For Seton Hall: Cavello one save, Vonlndern one assst, Bendock 11 saves. Marst had 29 shots-on-goal to Seton Hall's four. Ron Petro head basketball coach, refused to comment untl after he attended a meetng on Monday. Splt week for tenns by Wllam Flood The Marst College women's tenns team splt ts two matches last week leavng the squad wth a 5-2 record overall. The team faced a very strong team n Concorda and were beaten soundly 9-0. Then they went to Ramapo and crushed ther squad 7-2. At Concorda, the Foxes were smply outclassed. Cndy Krueger sad she felt she played well n her match aganst the player ranked 15th on the east coast. "I was really happy wth the way I played," Krueger "I felt I was n the match the whole way.'' Krueger lost 2-6,2-6. In an exctng match, Jose Tropano was outstroked n a 3-set thrller, 6-2, 2-6, 1-6. "She came out really strong, but Concorda's player cooled Jose down wth some great groundstroke," Colagross Colagross sad the grls "played really well" aganst Concorda. "It was a good experence for my squad. All the grls dd a good job, "she ;:At Ramapo questonable..jcalls.. score dscrepances, and unsportsmar-lke behavor led to arguments among players. "I was glad to get out of there wth a wn," Colagross "AH of the confuson really hurt the grls games." In two matches at Ramapo, play was stopped for several mnutes because of msunderstandngs, one match never resumed. Krueger, Marst's top sngles player, lost the frst set and -was wnnng the second when what she called constant rdcule started to get to her. She defaulted. "I've played tenns for many years, and I have never seen such a terrble dsplay of sportsmanshp, she The grl had no morals, ts a game of honesty." Senor captan Conne Roher, spoke for the team, "They were a weak team and - they knew t, so they tred to rattle us by usng unsportsman-lke conduct," she Pre-season problems by Bll Travers Below are two questons sure to be on the Marst College basketball multple chocequz. 1. Whch of the followng wll be seen n the McCann Center ths season? a. Daryl Powell takes a quck pass from Bruce Johnson. He drbbles twce and pulls up for a jump shot. The ball fles through the ar and goes through the net wth a swoosh. b. Marst trals by eght ponts. They have lost ther momentum. Coach Ron Petro taps Steve Eggnk on the shoulder and Eggnk enters the game. He hts three quck jumpers from 25 feet and pulls Marst back nto the game. c. Three mnutes reman n the game. Marst leads by 15 ponts and everyone has seen playng tme except for one player. The chants of We want Todd' are deafenng. Todd Hasler enters the game to a standng ovaton. d. None of the above. Obvously the answer s d. There wll be some new faces on the basketball team ths year, but t's the faces that wll be mssng that wll make ths season dfferent. Two key players, Daryl Powell and Steve Eggnk, from 's successful season wll not be n unform ths year. Also, Marst's most popular player the last few seasons, Todd Hasler;, wll not be around to str up the crowd. Daryl Powell, Marst's 6-foot-5, 195- pound forward, left school pror to hs fnals last sprng due to academc dffcultes. Hs 20.7 ponts per game average last season was second best on Marst and was the 20th-ranked player n Dvson I scorng. He led the ECAC Metro-South Conference n scorng and set the school snglegame record wth 43 ponts aganst Wagner. He pulled down 6.1 rebounds per game whch was second to Ted Taylor's 6.2 average. The Mesa Junor College transfer was heavly reled upon by the Red Foxes for puttng ponts on the board. Hs explosve offensve style enabled hm to reel off sx or eght ponts n a matter of seconds. Fndng a replacement for Powellwll be very dffcult. The lkely canddate to take over hs job s Chrs Metcalf, a junor who transferred from Rhode Island last semester. But Metcalf s one of the Foxes walkng wounded wth a broken ankle. Hs return s expected to be delayed sx weeks and probably wll not be at full strength when he s elgble to play on Dec. 19. The other key loss ths season s junor forward Steve Eggnk. Eggnk recently underwent back surgery and wll be out for the season., Eggnk averaged just under seven ponts per game last season and led the Foxes n free throw consstency (86 percent).. Hs forte was comng off the bench to spark many Marst comebacks. Hs sharpshootng from the feld, never-endng hustle and aggressve teamwork wll be sorely. mssed.. Also mssng from the McCann Center ths season wll be Hasler. No longer wll we hear those boomng chants of 'We want Todd'. The stuaton of Hasler not playng unted the Red Fox partsans. But, hs lmted playng tme last season was no ndcaton of hs career at Marst. In hs frst three seasons Hasler averaged over 15 ponts per game. He was a threat to snk a basket from almost anywhere on the court. Hasler played only 40 mnutes last season, so hs contrbuton offensvely won't be mssed. What wll be mssed s hs presence on the court whch sparked the enthusasm of the crowd. Marst's offense ths season wll be centered around Steve Smth. I know that, you know that and all the teams n the Metro-South know that. Smth averaged 21 ponts per game last year and was the 27thranked scorer n Dvson I.^Smth s ranked 12th n terms of Dvson I scorers returnng ths season. Last season Smth and Powell shared the offensve dutes. Now, Smth wll be carryng a heavy load wth the absence of Powell. 2. Wll the" loss of Eggnk and Powell hurt the Red Foxes n ther second Dvson I season? a. Defntely yes. b. Defntely no. c. Probably. d. No comment. Obvously there s no rght answer. It's too early to tell. One thng s for sure; Eggnk and Powell were two key players last season. Statstcs speak for themselves. You decde. I'll pck (c) untl the team s back at full strength.
