1 Dear Big Red Marching Band Member, June 20, 2017 I hope you are enjoying your summer so far. I am keeping busy planning our activities for next fall and I m very excited about the way things are shaping up. If we continue the current enrollment trends, this year s marching band should be the largest in the history of WKU! Our performances next fall will include all our home football games as well as a pep band trip to Nashville, Tennessee for the WKU vs Vanderbilt football game. The following information is to let you know the dates of our pre-school marching band camp and hopefully answer any questions you may have about the fall semester. Whether you are a returning student or an entering freshman, I hope you are as excited about the upcoming year as I am. Come ready to work together with intensity and purpose to make the Big Red Marching Band one of the premier college marching bands in the country. Marching band camp will be held from Friday, August 11 th through Saturday, August 19 th All students living on campus may move into the dorms at 6:00p.m. on Friday, August 11 th. If you need any more details about campus housing you may call (270) Remember to bring meal money for the week of band camp. Students who need to use University equipment (sousaphone, marching baritone, marching horn, etc.) should come by the new Music Hall equipment room (MH 104) on Friday, August the 11th between 12:30 pm 2:30 pm to check out an instrument or make prior arrangements by contacting the band office (270) I have enclosed a schedule for the first weekend of band camp as well as a general schedule for the week of August 14 th. The marching schedule will change when I learn the football teams practice schedule. I will communicate those changes to you via your WKU account. Please plan for our camp activities on Monday, August 14 th thru Friday, August 18 th to take up the entire day. If you are a freshman attending M.A.S.T.E.R. Plan please take note of the sessions you are required to attend. You will find those highlighted in gray. If you plan on attending M.A.S.T.E.R. Plan you should follow the band camp schedule that applies to your section until M.A.S.T.E.R. Plan begins on Sunday evening. Contact me if you have any questions about the rehearsal schedule for band camp. Our camp will conclude at noon on Saturday, August 19 th. ******CHECK YOUR WKU ACCOUNT THROUGHOUT THE SUMMER FOR UPDATES AND NEW INFORMATION ON THE BIG RED MARCHING BAND****** There will be an organizational meeting for all band members in the Instrumental Rehearsal Hall (MH 103) on Friday, August 11 th at 3:00 p.m. Please arrive at 2:30 p.m minutes before the meeting for pre-registration. Chair auditions will be held beginning at 9:00 a.m. on Saturday, August 12 th. You should find links to copies of the show music for our pre-game show and halftime shows enclosed with this . You may hear recordings of this music by going to the following web sites: She Looks so Perfect by 5 Seconds of Summer = Marching Band Arrangement- Original version - Pom Poms by the Jonas Brothers = Marching Band Arrangement- Original version - Larger than Live & Everybody by the Backstreet Boys = Marching Band Arrangement- Original version - Original version - FANFARE AND ENTRANCE Pregame = Chair auditions will be selected from excerpts of this music as well as Fanfare and Entrance from our pre-game show. You will receive more details (location and cuts) about auditions when you arrive for the organizational meeting. Keep in mind that auditions and tryouts are for chair placement only (These auditions will also be instrumental in determining seating and stipend awards for the pep band). All students with previous marching experience are welcome to participate in the BRMB. Invite your friends to participate. Let them know it won t take up as much time as they think and they can contribute to our success. Most of all, they will enjoy the opportunity to continue making music and meeting new friends. Since each of you is integral to the success of the WKU band program, it is vitally important that you plan on attending camp. Please make plans to avoid any possible conflicts. In addition, make sure you come to camp prepared for the summer elements. Tennis shoes and socks are required for marching rehearsals and you will want to have comfortable clothes and sunscreen available to protect you from the heat and sun. Water coolers will be available but it would be advisable to bring your own water bottle to rehearsals. Band members will also need to obtain their own lyre to hold music and flip folders before they arrive on campus as well.
2 The marching band s regularly scheduled rehearsals once school begins are on Monday, Wednesday and Friday from 3:15pm to 5:15 pm. Below is a list of known performances for the fall semester. Please make sure you plan your family gatherings and work schedules around these dates to avoid any conflicts. Band members will be required to purchase a few items for use in rehearsal and performance. We are using a company that will take your orders, collect payment and deliver your items to us for distribution during band camp. Everyone will receive a t-shirt and baseball cap free of charge but all students will need to be responsible to purchase the prescribed shorts and sunglasses. All four apparel items will become part of the required uniform so they must be purchased from the prescribed vendor no substitutes please. Winds and percussion will also need to purchase black marching shoes and black socks while wind players will also need to purchase black gloves. The shoes and gloves will be available for purchase on Charms through our vendor - Fear Nothing Music Gear socks should be purchased at a local store of your choice. If you already own black marching shoes and gloves it is not necessary to purchase these items from Fear Nothing Music Gear. You may use the black marching shoes and gloves you already own. Colorguard members will need to purchase shoes and wind suit jacket on charms and then a few other items when you arrive at band camp. Colorguard members please make sure your first name on the order form is the way you would like for it to appear on your jacket. All sizing information can be found on the included item description flyer or on the Charms website. There are additional items (polo shirt, hoodies, fleece jacket, etc.) available for purchase but they are not required. You are welcome to order those for you or your family members own personal use. ** IT IS IMPORTANT THAT EVERYONE LOG INTO CHARMS AND FILL OUT THE ONLINE ORDER FORM EVEN IF YOU DO NOT NEED TO PURCHASE ANY OF THESE ITEMS. THIS WILL ALLOW US TO ORDER CORRECT T-SHIRT SIZES FOR EVERYONE. YOU MUST LOGIN TO CHARMS AND INDICATE YOUR T-SHIRT SIZE AND ORDER ITEMS NO LATER THAN FRIDAY, JULY 21 st. ** Enjoy the rest of your summer. If you have any questions, don t hesitate to call me at (270) or me at jeff.bright@wku.edu (please leave a message if I am not there). I look forward to meeting you in August. Sincerely, Jeff Bright Associate Director of Bands Western Kentucky University
