Polytechnc Fve Returns Tonght State Defeated Brooklyn Poly Durng The New York Trp By Score Of 3-9 Tonght State college wll be host on the Page hall court to a team from New York, Brooklyn Polytechnc nsttute, who were defeated by the Purple and Gold on the New York trp by the close score of 3 to 9. Brooklyn Poly handed State the only defeat suffered last season, and the (Joewey squad s out to make a sweep of ths year's seres. Brooklyn Poly brngs a veteran team to State wth the excepton of last year's captan. Dlg, a forward, who went well here last wnter, s hopng to duplcate the 3 ponts he made here. The other forward, Walter, scored 5 ponts n the New York game ths year and s a marked man tonght. Poly uses ether the zone or man to man defense, dependng on the opponents' offense or court. Last year the zone defense worked the best of the two defenses. The Poly offense s the fast break wth the two forwards constantly cutlng from sde to sde smlar to the old State offense. As far as s known, Brooklyn Poly has had an average season. The State team, shattered by njures, wll put the best team avalable, whch s stll a good basketball team, aganst Brooklyn Poly. John Ryan s defntely lost for ths contest because hs ankle has not respnnded to treatment. The patrons arc lookng for Captan Bancroft to return to hs usual good form to work wth Margson and Welter. Concernng wegh! and heght, State measures up favorably wth Poly. A State vctory tonght would tally more wns than losses for ths semester. la the prelmnary, al 7:3, the State Freshmen are out lo avenge a defeat suffered at the hands of the Rensselaer Hgh school at Rensselaer early n the season. 8 Syracuse Bows State Regulars Varsty Puts Up Valant Fght Aganst Syracuse Quntet But Loses, 44- Fresh from a vctory over Brdgewater Teachers, the 8tato college basketball team traveled to Syracuse Saturday to lose by a wde margn, 44-, to tho hghly touted Syracuse unversty on the Arclbold court. Syracuse, wth Soudermnn, tho 6' 6" center, gettng the tap, had lttle or no dffculty n runnng the score up to 6 to 4 n the frst ton mnutes before the varsty was removed. State's ponts were made by Margson and Bancroft. A bt of humor was enacted when the ball rolled under the boxng rng and four managers dressed n whte crawled under the rng to retreve t. The new Syracuse men contnued to run the score up on a nervous State team. Balusky was the keyman on ths offense. Dck Margson on a cross-over was fed the ball by Bancroft for State's last ponts n the half whch gave a Syracuse 3 to 8 lead. The second half saw Syracuse put the frst team n agan. State showed a reversal of form now. Instead of playng Syracuse, they were playng another basketball game. The passes were better and tho movements of tho men were surer. Syracuse was surprsed by ths "new" team that gave them sucl opposton. Frst one team and then the other would get possesson of the ball only to lose the ball as the thrust was made for the basket. Syracuse jumped the lead to 35-9 when Margson brought a cheer from the crowd wth a rght hook shot whle n the ar, covered by two Syracuse men, that swshed through the hoop, Welter followed wth hs overhead shot aganst Souderman that got a rse from the crowd. When twelve mnutes had been completed n the half, both teams had scored fve ponts (35-3). Syracuse put n the seeond team to see what they could do aganst an nspred Purplo and Gold. The freshmen ran tho score up to 4-4 but the orgnal fve men answered ths fast pace by takng command of the court to go on a small scorng spree wth Margson n tho leadng role. Bulger had to jump n the ar, gong away from the basket, to get bs bucket n ths rally. Tho flal score for State was a Syracuse pny. Welter snared the bull under hs own basket and on a lob pass to Margson gave lm hs chance for another basket. Syracuse ended the scorng when Baylook sunk a basket just before the fnal whstle. The fnal score was Syracuse 44, State. Dck Margson was hgh man on the door wth ponts, whle Iblnsky led Syracuse wth ponts. State had the "jtters" n the frst half and mssed many push-up shots that under normal condtons are sure scorers. Bancroft had hs worst nght of ths season where wth any breaks at all ho would huve been n the double numbers. Hershkowtz reached hs ulltme hgh ns a State guard, le was all over the court, gong at a very fast pneo, whch was n constant annoyance to Syracuse. Welter played skyscraper Sondcrnu to a standstll. Tho vaunted Syracuse bucket play worked only three tmes n I he whole game. Souderman got ponts aganst Pennsylvana md IS aganst Notre Dame, yet Len held hm to seven ponts n the twenty-fve mnutes he played. STATE COL.I.MUK lb Hfllc'ttft, r. f. Mtll-glsol,. f. Woltor, e. Bancroft sank two foul shots and ths consttuted the State score for the frst ten mnutes. Brdgewater Teachers adapted ther attack to our court and worked up a to lead wth Long domnatng the play. Two players were njured n ths rally. J. Ryan was forced to leave the game because of an njured ankle. Long njured hs rght arm and shoulder when ho trpped over Bancroft's leg to slde nto the bleechers. Wth Long out, Brdgewater bogged down whle State, paced by Margson and Bancroft, ran up twelve ponts. Dck Margson made two clean buckets on passes from Bancroft. Duke fed Bancroft a long pass to the sde of the court whch he converted. The small crowd dd not know what to expect n the second half because of the erratc showng n ths half, whch gave State 4 to Brdgewater's. As the second half opened, the Purple and Gold contnued the play shown late In the frst half. Bancroft and Margson contnued to clck and Welter also began to fgure n the offense. From Welter's tap untl a forward sank the ball, State had possesson of the ball almost contnuously. Welter had two overhead shots from the comer n ths rally. Nether Bancroft nor Margson had spectacular shots, but ther harmony n cutng, passng, and fentng untl one or tho other sank a basket were a joy to behold. State replacements began to appear n the lne-up when the Purple and Gold had a 34-7 lend. Whether the replacements were "cold" or norvous, the fact remans that Brdgewater came on wth a Burge to tral by 8 to 3. The regulars could not be saved for the game the next nght aganst Syracuse but they had to go to work agan. Brdgewater was stopped n ther tracks whle State put on another show for the gallery. Ths rally became a farce wth no one ou Brdgewater ade to stop Bancroft from makng eght ponts n fve mnutes and yet gve good "feeds" to Margson on hs cut-backs. The fnal score was State 6, Brdgewater State Teachers 3. Captan Bancroft was hgh man on tho floor wth twenty-one and Long led Brdgewater Teachers wth twelve ponts. The State forward wall, as nn ndcaton of the smoothness wth whch they work, scored 44 ponts. Mn - T. Ilvn. Illcrul't, Wrter, c. Hl'nks. c,,. Uyt, r. IT. Ile'slkwlu, r v Mllter, I. K.
