This 18-mnth prgram is fr thse wh already have a bachelr s degree in a nn-nursing discipline and want t earn a Bachelr f Science in Nursing (BSN) in rder t be eligible t take the NCLEX-RN nursing licensure examinatin. This dcument cvers the requirements and prcedures fr applying t Chrt 15 that runs frm May 2019 t December This guide als includes a FAQ n the prgram, eligibility, financial aid, and curriculum prgressin. 3 Frequently Asked Questins Prgram FAQs Hw many chrts are admitted each year? One chrt f 40 students is admitted per year. Beginning June 1 and ending August 31 we accept applicatins and cnduct interviews. The prgram begins in the first summer sessin f each year (usually the last week f May). Admitted students can get a head start by taking NSG 310 Human Respnse t Disease in the spring semester (which begins in January). Where are yu lcated? The Nursing department mved temprarily t the Whiteland Technlgy Center in Extn, PA in August A new building is being cnstructed n the WCU Main Campus. Chrt 15 will start at the Extn campus but may be mved t the new nursing building during All faculty ffices and all nn-elective Advance 2 BSN nursing classes are held in Suite 100 at 930 East Lincln Highway, Extn PA. Sme elective curses may be taught n the main campus in West Chester. See fr directins What is yur attritin rate? Our attritin rate since the prgram began, that is students wh leave withut finishing, has been less than 1%. What is yur acceptance rate? Fr the last chrt ver 120 cmplete applicatins were submitted. 4 I have a full-time jb. Can I cntinue t wrk full-time during the prgram? This is a rigrus full-time prgram. Experience has shwn that successful students d nt wrk mre than 20 hurs per week during the semesters. This is an individual decisin, and as such each student shuld carefully cnsider this recmmendatin prir t applying t the prgram. Classes are held weekdays during day, afternns, and evenings. Clinical experiences are n Saturday and Sundays, smetimes ne r bth days fr a ttal f hurs per weekend. Plan n at least 50 hurs per week f class time, clinical time, preparatin, and cmpletin f assignments. Summer classes run in nly 9 weeks. Fall and spring semesters classes are held ver 14 weeks. This means even mre time in summers will be spent in the classrm and in preparatin. Hw d I get mre infrmatin? 5 Admissin Prerequisites FAQs What are the requirements befre admissin? A bachelr s degree frm an accredited cllege/university. We will cnsider applicants wh will graduate in May f All prerequisites must be cmpleted by May 20, See the list f prerequisite curses later in this dcument. See the Eligibility checklist n page 20 in this dcument t review yur qualificatins t apply. Must all prerequisites be cmpleted befre applying? N. Prerequisites nly need t be cmpleted befre beginning the prgram. Hwever, it is imprtant that mst prerequisites be cmpleted at the time f applicatin. We prefer t see cmpletin f Chemistry, ne Anatmy and Physilgy, and Micrbilgy befre submitting yur applicatin. Yu can apply with fewer prerequisites cmpleted but chances f admissin are smaller. Cmplete the Eligibility Checklist and the Transcript Self-Review later in this dcument t see if yu are eligible t apply. Only applicatins that meet all the criteria will be cnsidered fr acceptance fr admissin. Cmpletin f all areas des nt mean yu will be accepted, nly that yu will be cnsidered fr acceptance. This prgram requires a cumulative GPA f at least 2.75 frm a student s previus bachelr s degree AND a Science Cmpsite GPA f at least 2.75 in the fllwing curses: BIO 100, BIO 259, BIO 269 and CHE/CRL 107 (r equivalents) (See Cmpsite GPA Wrksheet t calculate). All prerequisite grades must be at least a C t transfer. D yu still have rlling admissins? N. Starting with this chrt we will accept all applicatins during the windw f June 1 t August 31. Mst Intrductry curses frm accredited 2-year and 4-year prgrams will transfer (if they meet minimum grade and credit-hur requirements). Final curse equivalency will be determined by the Department f Nursing at the time f applicatin. We will nt fficially pre-apprve curses via phne r . Generally, if yur curse was taught at an accredited university r cllege, has the same r mre credit lad, and has a title very similar t the WCU equivalent curse it will transfer. What are the average scres f previusly admitted students? Averages in the last admitted chrt were Overall GPA 3.28, Science GPA 3.57, and TEAS f 85. I never tk a BIO100 curse, d I need t g back and take that? Yes, Intrductin t Bilgy (BIO 100 r its equivalent) is required. Yu may take either an intrductry bilgy curse r a CLEP exam in Bilgy t get credit. What are the age limits n prerequisite curses n curse I have already taken? Prerequisites mre than 10 years ld will be reviewed n an individual basis. Science curses Intr t Bilgy, Micrbilgy, and Intrductin t Chemistry must be cmpleted n mre than 5 years frm the start f the prgram. Anatmy and Physilgy must be cmpleted less than 3 years frm the start f the chrt. This means that the secnd A&P curse fr Chrt 15 cannt be lder than the spring f We require this due t ur finding that newer A&P credit crrelates with success in NSG 310 (Human Respnses t Disease). I tk Anatmy and Physilgy as separate curses. Will they transfer? As lng as they add up t 8 credits with a lab frm an accredited cllege they will mst likely transfer. [Penn State students shuld take BIOL 141/142 Human Physilgy (3/1 cr) and BIOL 129 Anatmy (4 cr).] When A&P is taught as curses in tw parts BOTH parts must be taken at the same schl. I am having difficulty finding a chemistry curse that is equivalent t CHE/CRL107. What shuld I d? CHE/CRL 107 at WCU is 5 credits. We will accept a 4-credit intrductry chemistry curse frm anther university if it included a labratry cmpnent described n the transcript. A strng bichemistry cmpnent is preferred when chsing a chemistry curse. D nursing curses frm ther universities transfer? N, nursing curses d nt transfer. I wuld like t test ut f sme curses. Can I CLEP any pre-requisites? Yes, if yu feel yu have the backgrund, but nt the cllege curse credit, fr Basic Bilgy, Intrductry Psychlgy, Intrductry Scilgy, and/r Human Grwth and Develpment Acrss the Lifespan yu can take the Cllege Level Examinatin Prgram (CLEP) exam. Yu must scre at least a 50. Fr further infrmatin, see My science curse did nt have a lab. Will yu accept it? Yes, but yu will still need the lab. Chemistry including a lab must ttal 4 credits. Anatmy and Physilgy must ttal 8 credits including a lab. Micrbilgy must ttal 4 credits including a lab. Where can I take my prerequisite classes? We d nt require that yu take classes at any specific institutin, but ask that yu lk at the curse requirements as yur guide. Mst cmmunity clleges and fur-year clleges ffer the prerequisite curses that accept. Curse titles and credit lad need t be similar. 7 I have a misdemeanr/felny in my backgrund. Will that be a prblem? All students must submit t criminal backgrund and drug screening checks befre attending ff-campus clinical curses. Many clinical agencies we use will nt allw students with certain criminal backgrunds int their agency. In such situatins yu culd n lnger remain a student. Additinally, sme crimes may prhibit yu frm getting a nursing license. See the BSN Student Handbk fr mre details. My degree is frm utside the USA. Hw t I apply? The prcess is the same fr USA graduates but yu will need t have yur transcripts reviewed first at yur expense. G t and fllw the directins fr Internatinal Admissin>Transfer Applicants. What is the TEAS exam? TEAS (Test f Essential Academic Skills) is a multiple-chice assessment f basic academic knwledge in reading, mathematics, science, English and language usage. The time limit is 209 minutes. The cmputerized exam cntains 170 fur-ptin multiple-chice questins and must be taken in a prctred envirnment. Calculatrs may NOT be used fr the test. Test results are available 48 hurs after cmpletin f the test. See fr test infrmatin. Lk at the bttm f the page fr the Register fr the TEAS buttn. Select TEAS fr Nursing and select a testing site. WCU des NOT ffer the exam n ur campus. The minimum scre fr applicatin eligibility is 70. Hwever, the average accepted student has had Ttal Scre averaging 85 in recent chrts. Only TEAS scres cmpleted after August 31, 2016 will be accepted. Request that ATI send yur scre t the West Chester University Admissins Department. This will usually be an extra charge unless yu take the exam at a PSI Testing Center. DO NOT submit scres t the Nursing Department. Scres g t WCU Admissins. Applicatins will nt reach the interview stage withut submitted TEAS scre. Yu may begin the applicatin prcess befre the TEAS is cmpleted but yur applicatin will nt be prcessed until the scre is submitted. We DO NOT substitute, require, r accept SAT, ACT, r GRE scres in lieu the TEAS. Yu may repeat the exam if yu scre less than 70. We nly cnsider yur latest scre. Where can I take the TEAS exam? The TEAS is NOT administered at WCU. Many cmmunity clleges ffer the exam. Yu can als t ATITesting.cm and t ne f their reginal testing centers. Sme lcal lcatins ffering the TEAS include Rxbrugh Memrial Hspital, Penn State Berks and Lehigh campuses, Delaware Cunty Cmmunity Cllege, and Berks Cunty Cmmunity Cllege. Submit the Transcript Self-Review frm t Dr. Meehan after applying nline. D yu need recmmendatin letters, SAT scres, r high schl recrds? DO NOT send high schl transcripts, GRE, SAT, r ACT scres. Have gd grades in yur first degree and prerequisites curses. If yu have pr prerequisite grades yu shuld retake the curses befre applying. Write a gd essay n the nline applicatin explaining why yu want t be a nurse. Get experience with nurses and understand what nursing is. Vlunteer at a hspital r get a caregiving jb. 9 Pst-Applicatin/Interview FAQs Will I be interviewed? Only applicants wh have submitted all transcripts, TEAS scre, and a Transcript Self-Review befre August 31, 2018 will be cnsidered fr interviews. If yu are invited t an interview yu will be sent a link t schedule it. Interviews will be held n varius weekdays in September. Applicatins with missing self-reviews, transcripts, TEAS scres, r are belw minimum GPA requirements will nt be invited t the interview stage. What happens at the interview? Yu will be able t tur the facility and see ur simulatin labs and classrms. The grup interview will ask yu why yu chsing nursing as a career and why yu want t cme t WCU. Yu will write tw shrt essays as answers t a questin abut nursing and yur interest in nursing. Yu will have time t ask questins yu may have abut the prgram. Dr. Meehan may ask questins abut yur prgress in cmpleting prerequisites, and yu will have the pprtunity t ask questins privately. When will admissin decisins be made? After interviews begin we will begin t ffer admissin t utstanding applicants sn after interviews begin. All applicants wh are selected fr admissin will be ntified via n later than Octber 31. What happens after I am admitted? Admitted students will later receive a frmal letter frm Admissins in Nvember 2018 and will be required t submit a depsit within 30 days f receiving the letter t hld their spt. Admitted students will be ffered an pprtunity t take NSG 310 Human Respnses t Disease in the 2019 spring semester. This class is limited t 20 students. Early in 2019 yu will receive a letter explaining the next steps in enrlling, and a Student Agreement frm that affirms yur acceptance f admissin and agreement t fllw the required curriculum. In mid-may f 2019 yu will have an all-day Orientatin t the prgram befre classes begin. I am highly qualified but applied late in the applicatin windw. Will that hurt my chances f admissin? Yes. We begin accepting students t the chrt sn after interviews begin. If the chrt fills quickly due t a pl f highly qualified applicants, then yur chance f admissin is greatly diminished. Yu may be invited fr an interview a later date if nt all admitted students accept admissin. If I am nt admitted after the interview is there any chance f being admitted later? Yes. Smetimes admitted students chse t nt attend WCU after accepting admissin. 10 Financial Aid & Cst FAQs What des the Advance 2 BSN Prgram cst? The fees and tuitin are same as all ther bachelr degrees at WCU. See the Bursar s page at: In-state tuitin and fees fr the five semester f the prgram are currently arund $24,000. Out-f-state tuitin and fees will be arund $48,000. Tuitin and fee increases have been cmmn annually, s prepare fr increases. Husing and meal csts are additinal. On-campus husing is generally nt available fr students in this prgram. During the first weeks f the prgram yu will spend at least $4000 n bks, equipment, unifrms, and the ATI study prgram. The ATI prgram prvides study guides, nline testing fr practice, NCLEX-RN licensure exam practice and an in-persn NCLEX-RN prep class. Yu will need t spend arund $2000 the first summer sessin n these items. A smartphne r handheld cmputer is recmmended fr electrnic reference titles and healthcare applicatins. A laptp with Windws 10 r Mac OS is required [it des nt need t be very pwerful]. An inexpensive mnchrme laser printer is als very helpful and is recmmended. D I pay upfrnt fr the entire prgram, r billed each semester? Each semester is billed separately and is due at the start f each semester. Be aware that sme student lans nly pay fr students beginning in the fall semester. Our prgram starts in May s yu may be respnsible t find anther funding surce fr the first semester. Wuld I be cnsidered a full-time student? Yes, students are cnsidered full-time in the prgram. During the summer sessin yu nly need 6 credits t be cnsidered full time. D I pay in-state r ut-f-state tuitin? Generally, yu need t be living in Pennsylvania fr 12 cnsecutive mnths prir t admissin (Octber 2017) t be cnsidered an in-state student. See residency details at the Registrars page: Is there financial aid/schlarships available? WCU des nt ffer schlarships in the frm f discunted tuitin. There are utside schlarships that may reduce yur csts. G t the Financial Aid department n Main Campus t search fr available mney. 11 Curriculum Prgressin FAQs Is the Advance 2 BSN prgram the same as the traditinal undergraduate prgram? The curses are the same but taught nly with ther Advance 2 BSN students. The cre curses als run thrugh the summers in an accelerated frmat, unlike the traditinal prgram. What classes are required? 1 Human Respnse t Disease curse (NSG 310) 13 Cre Nursing curses: NSG 101, NSG 212, NSL 212, NSG 367, NSG 311, NSL 311, NSG 312, NSL 312, NSG 313, NSG 411, NSL 411, NSG 412, NSL 412 (see curse descriptin sectin fr mre detail) Nursing elective(s) (fr a ttal f 3 credits) When and where are classes held? All cre nursing curses are held at the Extn campus. Classrm curses NSG 311, NSG 312, and NSG 411 are held weekdays n campus during the fall and spring semesters. They are in 4-5 hur blcks ne evening per week, usually 4 t 9 pm. Classrm curses NSG 101, NSG212, and NSG412 are held weekdays during the day in the summer fr 9 weeks. NSL 212 and 412 clinical curses are als held during weekdays during the summer. Classes run frm Mnday t Thursday. There is n classes r clinicals during the week f Independence Day. Clinical curses NSL 311, NSL 312, NSL 411, and NSL 412 are held in area hspitals and clinics. NSL 311, 312, and 411 are held n the weekends during the fall and spring semesters, averaging 11 hurs per week. NSL 212 and NSL 412 are held in summer tw days a week n weekdays. Sme rtatins may differ slightly with lnger clinical hurs n sme days and ther days ff. Shifts vary between days, evenings, and nights. Yu must keep yur calendar pen frm Friday evening t Sunday evening in the fall and spring semesters. Classrm classes NSG367 Pharmaclgy (3 credits) and NSG313 Nursing Research (3 credits) are at the Extn campus and are scheduled as daytime classes weekdays in the first fall and spring semesters. Hw lng is a semester? Fall and Spring semesters are 15 weeks in length (14 weeks f classes plus ne week f final exams). Summer semesters include SS1 and SS2 as ne 9-week semester fr the NSG curses. There is a ne-week break at July 4 th. Nn-nursing curses run 5-weeks in SS1 r SS2. Summer pst-sessin (r smetimes called Summer III) and Winter Sessin (the first weeks f January) are 2-3 weeks in length, and may be shrter fr sme curses. We d nt teach any cre curses during these semesters, but yu may use these sessins fr nursing elective curses that may be available. 12 Are there any curses I need t take befre starting? NSG 310 is encuraged t be taken in the Spring semester befre starting the prgram. Only students accepted int Chrt 15 are eligible t take this curse in Spring f Any remaining prerequisite curses must be cmpleted by May 20, Admitted students will nt be permitted t enter the prgram if there any unfulfilled prerequisites. What elective curses are ffered? Yu need a minimum f three (3) credits f nursing electives in additin t the required nursing curses. Electives are ffered in fall, spring, and interim semesters (Interim are the times between Fall and Spring, and between Spring and Summer semesters) The pssible elective curses are listed in this Guide, hwever nly a few f these curses are available frm semester t semester. WCU has increasingly been ffering internatinal travel curses fr the Interim perids. These have csts fr bth tuitin and travel. Yu are permitted t take mre than 3 credits f elective but yu may nt be in an verlad fr that semester. What is a passing grade? Fr all NSG/NSL curses except the 6 credits f Nursing Electives, the grade is a C (minimum f 73%). Yu will take the NSG and NSL prtins f the curses tgether (i.e. NSG311 and NSL311) s yu must pass BOTH curses with a minimum f 73% in rder t prgress. Fr Nursing Electives the minimum grade is a C-. What happens if I d nt pass a curse? If yu d nt achieve the minimum grade as utlined abve yu will nt be permitted t prgress in the prgram. Due t space limitatins yu will als need t apply fr readmissin t the prgram. What else will I need t be a student in this prgram? Aside frm dedicatin, intelligence, caring, and a desire t help peple it will help t have a laptp, and a handheld cmputer r smartphne. A car is necessary t g t class and clinical.
