This prgram is designed t train students as public health scientists and practitiners in rder t assist public and private agencies with prgram develpment, implementatin and evaluatin with regard t nutritin in health prmtin and disease preventin. Gals The gals f this MPH prgram in Public Health Nutritin are t that ensure graduates: Understand the pathphysilgy f cmmn acute and chrnic disease prcesses and the rle that nutritin may play in the develpment f these diseases. Understand the factrs impacting the accessibility, availability, adequacy and safety f the fd and water systems serving a cmmunity, and the relatinship between cmmunity fd and water systems and health utcmes. Develp skills in nutritin assessment f bth individuals and cmmunities. Utilize apprpriate epidemilgic methds fr develping and testing hyptheses relating t nutritin and health utcmes at the ppulatin level. Develp skills in designing, implementing, and evaluating nutritin interventins t imprve the health f cmmunities. Appreciate the rle f public health plicy in altering the fd envirnment at the cmmunity level. Prerequisites: Students wh d nt have an undergraduate degree in nutritin must successfully cmplete, (minimum grade f C), intrductry nutritin and nutritinal bichemistry cursewrk prir t matriculatin int the prgram. At the graduate level, enrllment in the nline graduate curse PUBH 6619, Fundamentals f Nutritin Science, prir t matriculatin, will satisfy this requirement. Sme undergraduate cursewrk, such as GW's EXNS 2119, will als satisfy this requirement. 2 Prgram Specific Cmpetencies Upn cmpletin f the MPH in Public Health Nutritin, students will pssess the fllwing functinal cmpetencies: Integrate nutritin within the cre functins f public health. Students will be able t translate nutritin research int public health practice thrugh applicatin f skills in nutritin assessment/surveillance, prgram planning and evaluatin, management, educatin and health prmtin, public plicy, and health cmmunicatin [Relevant Curses: PUBH 6500, 6610] Describe the internatinal and US public health nutritin system. Students will identify the gvernmental structures and prcesses invlved in the develpment f public plicy, legislatin, regulatins and delivery f services that influence fd intake, nutritinal status, and health f ppulatins. [Relevant Curses: PUBH 6610, 6613, 6482, 6014, 6015] Students will identify internatinal, federal, state and lcal level nutritin surveillance and assistance prgrams. Students use apprpriate and current methds t assess nutritin status and priritize nutritinal prblems f target ppulatins acrss the life span. Examples might include anthrpmetric, bichemical, clinical, dietary, functinal (e.g. physical mbility r feeding skills), envirnmental and sciecnmic assessment. Students will identify ptential envirnmental, ecnmic, behaviral, plitical, cultural and histrical factrs that impact the fd system (including the prductin, prcessing, distributin, and cnsumptin f fd) and water supply. The Master f Public Health (MPH) curriculum cnsists f five types f curses: 1. Required Cre Curses (PUBH 6001, 6002, 6003, 6004, 6006, and 6007) 2. Required Prgram-Specific Curses 3. Advanced Research Methds Curses 4. Electives Required Practicum and Culminating Experience Graduatin Requirements 1. Graduate Credit Requirement: 45 graduate credits are required. 2. Curse Requirements: Successful cmpletin f the Cre Curses and the Prgram-Specific Curses are required. 3. Grade Pint Requirement: A 3.0 (B average) verall grade pint average is required. 4. Time Limit Requirement: The degree must be cmpleted within fur years. 5. Transfer Credit Plicy: Up t 12 graduate credits that have nt been applied t a previus graduate degree may be transferred t the Master f Public Health prgram. External credits must have been earned frm an accredited institutin in the last 3 years with a grade f 3.0 (B) r better. SPH Graduate Certificate students can transfer as many credits as meet prgram requirements, up t 18 credits, t the MPH. Graduate Certificate students wishing t transfer t a degree prgram may apply t d s via the nline change f cncentratin petitin after cmpletin f 3 r mre curses and a cumulative GPA f 3.0 r better. A grade f B r better is required fr a curse t be eligible fr transfer. 6. CITI Training requirement: All students are required t cmplete training regarding human subject prtectin regulatin and the Health Insurance Prtability and Accuntability Act f 1996 (HIPAA). T fulfill this requirement, yu must cmplete the Cllabrative IRB Training Initiative (CITI) Curse in The Prtectin f Human Research Subjects. 7. Prfessinal Enhancement requirement: Students must participate in 8 hurs per degree prgram f advisr pre-apprved Public Health-related lectures, seminars, and sympsia, related t yur field f study. Prfessinal Enhancement activities supplement the academic curriculum and help prepare students t participate actively in the prfessinal cmmunity. Opprtunities fr prfessinal enhancement are regularly publicized via the Milken Institute SPH Listserv and thrugh yur department r advisr.
