LVN/Paramedic t RN Assciate Degree Optin This ptin includes all nursing cntent and supprt cursewrk fr the LVN and/r the Paramedic t earn the Assciate f Science Nursing degree and be eligible fr the Natinal Cuncil Licensing Exam fr Registered Nursing (NCLEX-RN). Required fr Admissin Prgram Curriculum Requirements ENGL 1A Analytical Reading and Writing als cunts twards General Educatin degree requirements (Area D1) BIO 2 Micrbilgy Prerequisite: *BIOL-1 r BIOL-3 C-requisite: CHEM-1A r CHEM-2 Recmmended Prep: ENGL- 150 and MATH-120 *BIO 8 r 6 Human Bilgy/Human Anatmy Prerequisite fr BIO 6: ENGL-150 and credit fr r enrllment in *BIOL-1 BIO 7 Human Physilgy Prerequisite: *BIOL-1 and BIOL-6 and ENGL- 150 and CHEM-1A r CHEM-2 *HO 15 Nutritin *Fr this applicatin perid nly BIO 8 can substitute fr BIO 6. LVN t RN 30-Unit Optin Certificate The Califrnia Bard f Nursing requires that all schls ffer this ptin. Hwever, this ptin carries with it a number f cnsequences yu need t be aware f: This ptin des nt result in a degree. It is a certificate prgram. Yu d nt graduate frm this prgram. Rather, yu earn a certificate. The certificate yu earn fllwing successful prgram cmpletin, and subsequent RN licensure, are nt recgnized in any state but Califrnia, which means yu cannt wrk in any ther state as an RN. All RN-BSN prgrams require an Assciate Degree as an admissin requirement. The 30-Unit Optin certificate is nt an Assciate Degree. With this ptin, yu cannt cntinue yur educatin. This ptin severely limits in and ut-f-state emplyment alng with educatin pprtunities. Because f these issues, interested students must meet with the Directr f Nursing and Health Occupatins t apply. Required fr Admissin BIO 2 Micrbilgy BIO 7 Human Physilgy *Science prerequisites (i.e. BIOL 1/CHEM-1A r CHEM-2) are NOT required fr 30-Unit Optin Students. 2

All Career Mbility students seeking RN licensure are subject t the same waitlist lttery prcess, regardless f what is applied fr i.e. LVN/Paramedic-RN r LVN-RN 30 Unit Optin applicants. Prgram waitlist numbers are randmly assigned t all applicants, regardless f prgram. The lttery places new applicants at the bttm f the prgram waitlist. Waitlisted students are given pririty the fllwing year, accrding t their lttery number. All students (waitlisted and new applicants) are ntified by mail f their lttery number n an annual basis. We encurage degree-ptin students wh are waiting fr admissin t take additinal required general educatin curses fr the nursing degree, abve and beynd the prerequisite curses. Please Nte: THE NUMBER OF CAREER MOBILITY STUDENTS ADMITTED ANNUALLY IS DEPENDENT ON FISCAL RESOURCES. 2. NURS 60A, 60B, 60L: Enrllment in these curses is limited t students whse prgram waitlist number indicates they will be ffered a seat in NURS 23 the fllwing Fall semester. Nte: NURS 60 A and B are spring-nly curses. NURS 60 L is a summer-nly curse. NURS 23 is a fall-nly curse. 3. All LVN applicants, regardless f ptin applied fr, must have graduated frm an apprved LVN prgram and be licensed by the State f Califrnia t apply. Paramedic applicants must hld either a current Califrnia state paramedic license r a current natinal registry certificatin t apply. It is recmmended that all applicants cmplete ne full year s experience wrking in the field apprpriate t their licensure/registratin prir t applying t the Career Mbility Prgram, althugh thse withut wrk experience will als be accepted. 4. All applicants are advised t review the current Cllege Catalg fr degree and certificate requirements, including required prgram wrk, residency requirements, and cursewrk. 5. All nursing students must pssess sufficient cmputer literacy skills t cmplete Internet research, cmmunicate by , create electrnic dcuments, manage data strage devices, and use web based instructinal materials and applicatins. Thse withut these skills are encuraged t take CIS 1 prir t enrllment in the nursing prgram. 6. All students are required t cmplete a Backgrund Check(s). If a student s backgrund check (criminal recrd) des nt satisfy the requirements f any ne clinical agency, r the clinical agency refuses the student access t patients fr any ther reasn, we will nt be able t prvide alternate experiences and the student must withdraw frm the prgram r receive a grade f F fr the curse. 7. Evaluatin f the student nurse is based upn theretical knwledge, nursing skill prficiency, and the applicatin f bth f these in the clinical setting. T prgress thrugh and successfully cmplete and/r and graduate frm the prgram, students must achieve at least C/satisfactry grades in all nursing curses. In additin, a cumulative 2.0 GPA must be maintained in all Nursing and General Educatin requirements t earn the Assciate Degree. 3

4 8. The demands f the nursing prgram are many; mst students find it difficult t wrk mre than part time. Clinical scheduling, assignments, etc. cannt be altered due t an individual s utside emplyment. Financial Aid and Schlarships are available t help ffset the need t wrk and the cst f attendance- cntact the Financial Aid and Schlarship Offices fr mre infrmatin. In additin, persnal life issues need t be in balance t be successful in the prgram. Yu must have reliable transprtatin, reliable childcare (if applicable), and an ability t be punctual t assigned classes and clinical lcatins. Finally, tardiness is nt an acceptable perfrmance standard in prfessinal nursing, r this prgram. 9. Clinical labs are scheduled fr varying day, evening, night, and/r weekend shifts. In additin, students rtate t varius clinical facilities thrughut the cllege district (including Del Nrte Cunty) and are required t prvide their wn transprtatin, childcare, etc., in rder t attend clinical labs. Many students car pl; limited childcare services are available at the Child Develpment Center. 10. Freedm frm alchl and/r drug abuse, and emtinal illness that culd jepardize the student s ability t prvide safe client care is essential. Students are advised (accrding t Califrnia Bard f Registered Nursing guidelines) t seek vluntary aid fr cnditins that culd, if left unattended, lead t disciplinary actin and/r prevent licensure t practice nursing in Califrnia. 11. At the cmpletin f the Prgram, students must apply fr licensure thrugh the Califrnia Bard f Registered Nursing (BRN). As a part f the applicatin prcess, all applicants are required t reprt any disciplinary actin against a prfessinal license and/r any misdemeanr r felny cnvictins; certain cnvictins may result in the denial f the applicant s applicatin, which then results in an inability t btain licensure as a registered nurse. The BRN handles each f these applicants n a case-by-case basis. 12. Cst f the Prgram: Apprximately $4,300 (subject t change). Transprtatin and childcare expenses nt included. a. Enrllment fee at $46/unit - $1,610 b. Required textbks: apprximately $1,500. c. ATI Bks: apprximately $250. d. Required unifrms, white r black shes and a watch with secnd hand display (see dress cde in student handbk fr specifics) apprximate cst is $200. e. Backgrund checks and tracking: apprximately $150 f. Immunizatins fr students wh d nt have the required immunity t several cmmunicable diseases may cst ver $220. Mst are available thrugh the Student Health Clinic fr reduced fees r at n charge. g. CPR certificatin: apprximately $50. h. Schl pin (ptinal) fr graduatin: apprximately $60-$130. i. Licensure applicatin: apprximately $ Students must ntify the Health Occupatins Office f any change in mailing address, phne number and/r addresses. Changing yur cntact infrmatin thrugh Web Advisr r the Cllege des nt change it with this ffice. The Health Occupatins Office uses yur cntact infrmatin t cmmunicate with yu. If the Office des nt have yur current cntact infrmatin (telephne and/r ), ur ability t ntify yu is lst. Nt being able t ntify yu means that yu will nt receive critical infrmatin regarding yur waitlist number, which culd result in lsing yur seat. 4

5 Applicatin Prcedure LVN/Paramedic-RN Assciate Degree Career Mbility Prgram When filing an applicatin fr admissin t the (ADN) Assciate Degree Nursing Prgram, the applicant must: 1. File a cmpleted Student Enrllment Frm with the Cllege f the Redwds Admissins and Recrds Office. T participate in the Prgram admissin lttery, an applicant must have a Cllege f the Redwds student identificatin number that has been r will be assigned fllwing submissin f the CR Student Enrllment Frm. T enrll at Cllege f the Redwds and submit the frm, lg n t. Please indicate Nursing (NURS) as yur majr. 2. Submit an Applicatin t the Career Mbility Prgram t the Health Occupatins Office during the Enrllment Perid between 8:00 a.m. Mnday, January 30, 2017 and 4:30 p.m. n Friday, March 31, Applicatins may be either persnally delivered r mailed t the Health Occupatins Office, pstmarked n r befre March 31, If yu wuld like receipt verificatin f yur mailed applicatin, please mail it certified-return receipt requested. 9 Selectin Prcess Immediately fllwing the Enrllment Perid, all qualified applicants fr bth ptins (degree and certificate) are randmized, assigned a wait list number and placed n the Prgram Wait List. The Health Occupatin Office will ntify students by letter f their wait list number and admissin status n later than tw mnths fllwing the applicatin perid,. LVN/Paramedic-RN Assciate Degree Applicatins will be disqualified fr any ne f the fllwing reasns: Unverified and/r invalidated entries n the applicatin frm. Applicatins received after the Enrllment Perid deadline (reapplicatin is required in rder t be cnsidered fr the next Enrllment Perid). Failure t submit all necessary dcuments with yur applicatin (i.e. fficial cllege transcripts and fficial high schl transcripts r dcumentatin f cllege degree in lieu f high schl transcripts). Cumulative science prerequisite curse GPA belw 2.5 and/r repetitins greater than allwed number. Overall GPA belw 2.5 fr all curses taken at r abve cllegiate level. LVN-RN 30-Unit Optin Certificate Applicatins will be disqualified fr any ne f the fllwing reasns: Unverified and/r invalidated entries n the applicatin frm. Applicatins received after the Enrllment Perid deadline (reapplicatin is required in rder t be cnsidered fr the next Enrllment Perid). Failure t submit all necessary dcuments with yur applicatin (i.e. fficial cllege transcripts and fficial high schl transcripts r dcumentatin f cllege degree in lieu f high schl transcripts). Remaining qualified applicants whse lttery numbers did nt qualify them fr admissin will be sent a letter frm the Health Occupatins Department between September 1 and September 15 requesting verificatin that the applicant wants t be remain n the Prgram Wait List fr the next year. Yu must return the frm prvided in the letter by the date indicated t retain yur place n the Prgram Wait List. If yu d nt return the frm enclsed in the letter by the indicated date, yu will be remved frm the waitlist. It is yur respnsibility t watch yur mail fr this letter. It is als yur respnsibility t cntact us by September 25 if yu d nt receive the letter. T maximize the number f seats fr nursing students at Cllege f the Redwds, students wh apply t bth the LVN and ADN prgrams must select and enrll in nly ne prgram. Students cannt remain n the Prgram Wait List fr the secnd nursing prgram if they are enrlled in the first nursing prgram. Fr example, an LVN student cannt be maintained n the ADN Prgram Wait List while in the LVN Prgram. T becme an RN, that student must apply t the LVN/Paramedic -RN Career Mbility Prgram upn cmpletin f the LVN Prgram.
