Fr mre than a decade, the Academy f Nutritin and Dietetics Fundatin and the General Mills Fundatin have partnered t imprve yuth nutritin and physical activity behavirs acrss the cuntry. The gal f the Champins grants prgram is t encurage cmmunities in the United States t partner with Registered Dietitian Nutritinists t imprve the eating and physical activity patterns f children. Using a cmpetitive prcess, fifty grants f $20,000 each will be awarded t nn-prfit rganizatins wrking with/in cmmunities that demnstrate the greatest need and likelihd f sustainable impact n yuth nutritin and physical activity behavirs thrugh effective prgramming resulting in psitive utcmes. Nn-prfit rganizatins within the US are eligible t apply, including nt-fr-prfit rganizatins 501 c (3) and 509 (a), r units f gvernment, including health departments, gvernment agencies, schls and schl districts, public Universities, and Native American tribes.

2 What is an EIN Number? This is yur rganizatin's federal tax identificatin number. Des there need t be a General Mills plant in my area t apply fr this grant? N, applicants are nt required t be lcated in an area where a General Mills manufacturing facility is lcated. Can I apply if my prgram is in Canada? N, nly US rganizatins are eligible t apply. Yes, if yur rganizatin applied, but did nt receive a Champins fr Healthy Kids grant, yu are eligible t apply this year fr the same prgram r a different prgram. If we received a grant last year, can we apply again this year t keep the prgram? In general, prgrams will be funded fr ne year nly. One imprtant part f the selectin criteria fr the grant is the sustainability f the prgram after the grant perid is ver. If yur rganizatin r agency initiates a new prgram, r uses the same prgram but targets a different ppulatin grup t expand the prgram, yur rganizatin is eligible t apply. Tips fr a Strng Applicatin What resurces are available t develp a strng applicatin? Applicants are strngly encuraged t utilize the Guide fr Effective Nutritin Interventins and Educatin (GENIE) checklist and resurces. GENIE is a validated tl t help nutritin educatin practitiners design high quality and effective prgrams. Nte that the prpsals n GENIE are sample prpsals and d nt reflect the Champins fr Healthy Kids specific nline prpsal template. The GENIE checklist and Resurce Tlkit can be fund at: sm.eatright.rg/genie. What is the rle f the RDN r DTR? T ensure that the nutritin and physical fitness infrmatin in the prpsed prgram is accurate and is scientifically based, a registered dietitian nutritinist (RDN) r dietetic technician, registered (DTR) must either be directly invlved r serve as an advisr t the prgram. The RDN r DTR is expected t be invlved in the planning, implementatin, and/r evaluatin f the prgram. The RDN r DTR must be a member f the Academy f Nutritin and Dietetics and a member number is required fr the applicatin. Current member numbers are verified prir t final selectins. Hw can I find an RDN r DTR in my cmmunity? Visit the Academy website, and click n "Find a Registered Dietitian." Yu may wish t cntact yur lcal health department, cperative extensin ffice, r hspital t cntract with a RDN. RDN cntract expenses are allwable grant expenses. What type f activity wuld fulfill the requirement fr a physical activity cmpnent? The physical activity cmpnent shuld be measurable and prmte 60 minutes f physical activity daily fr children and adlescents, as recmmended by the Centers fr Disease Cntrl and Preventin. Hw many children is ur prgram expected t reach? There is nt a minimum number f children yur prgram is expected t reach, hwever it is expected that the utcmes yu utline are realistic depending n yur prgram intensity and is reasnable fr a $20,000 grant. Hwever, given these are meant t be netime prject grants, preference will be given t prjects with lw/n indirect, capital and verhead csts. What is the difference between prgram materials/resurces and equipment/capital? Examples f prgram materials include curriculum, bks, handuts, DVDs/CDs, jump rpes, exercise mats, balls, pedmeters, cking utensils, etc. Equipment can be nn-capital r capital. Nn-capital equipment is a single item that csts between $1,000 and $4,999 that is freestanding and has a use life f ne year r mre. Capital equipment is a single item that csts $5,000 r mre, is freestanding and has a use life f ne year r mre. Examples f equipment/capital include ffice equipment, playgrund equipment, appliances, etc. Hw much is the grant amunt? All grants awards are exactly $20,000 and all funds must be expended by May 31, What are sme examples f budget line items?
