1 Practical Nursing Prgram Infrmatin (Revised March 2018) Prgram Descriptin: The Practical Nursing (PN) Prgram prepares individuals t practice under the supervisin f a registered nurse, licensed physician r dentist. Use f the nursing prcess at the PN level tward the maintenance f health and preventin f illness, bservatin and nursing care f persns experiencing changes in their health prcesses, and the evaluatin f health practices f patients are emphasized. Practical Nursing Prgram Student Learning Objectives: Upn cmpletin f this prgram the student can: 1. Assume the rle f a cmpetent, caring practical nurse in a variety f health care settings under the directin f a registered nurse, licensed physician r dentist. 2. Use the human caring phenmena and the nursing prcess in prviding nursing care.. Demnstrate self-directin and respnsibility fr maintaining nursing cmpetence by pursuing persnal and prfessinal grwth.. Cmmunicate effectively with all members f the health care team. 5. Demnstrate accuntability f practice with adherence t ethical and legal standards f the prfessin. Miscellaneus Prgram Infrmatin: Classrm instructin in thery and basic nursing skills is prvided n campus. Under the guidance f prgram faculty, students gain valuable experience in the care f clients f all ages in a variety f health care settings and/r cmmunity agencies- including hspitals, lng-term care facilities, clinics and child care centers. Transprtatin t class, lab and the cmmunity agencies is the respnsibility f each student. Acceptance in the Practical Nursing prgram is based n a selective admissin prcess. Selectin f students fr the prgram will be made by a Practical Nursing Admissins Cmmittee. Admissins will be based n a weighted pints scale. Please refer t the Selective Admissin Scre Sheet fr areas in which pints may be earned. Pints will nly be granted fr curse wrk and test scres that are n the student s recrd by the applicatin deadline. Students are admitted t the prgram in the Fall Semester f each year. Cllege applicatins and class schedules are n the web at Prgressin in the Practical Nursing prgram is cntingent upn achievement f a grade f C r better in each curse and maintenance f a 2.0 cumulative grade pint average r better (n a.0 scale). The Kentucky Bard f Nursing (KBN) may deny a nursing graduate admissin t the NCLEX-PN Exam if an individual has been cnvicted f a misdemeanr r felny that invlves acts that bear directly n the qualificatins f the graduate t practice nursing. Enrllment in the Practical Nursing prgram may be limited because f available clinical/ labratry facilities, as well as faculty and financial resurces. Admissin is pen t all qualified students regardless f ecnmic r scial status and withut discriminatin n the basis f race, clr, creed, sex, marital status, beliefs, age, natinal rigin r disability. In additin t ther qualificatins, the cllege will, in cmpliance with KCTCS regulatins and in the manner and t the extent permitted by law, endeavr t prvide pprtunities t all students in rder t prmte diversity amng the student ppulatin in the Practical Nursing prgram. CPR (Healthcare Prvider Curse) requirements must be successfully cmpleted prir t enrlling in the first nursing curse and must be kept current thrughut the prgram. Dcumentatin f active status n the Medicaid Nurse Aide Registry r successful cmpletin f an equivalent curse within the previus three years is required prir t beginning PN prgram curses. Infrmatin regarding tuitin fees, csts f bks/nline resurces, unifrms, etc. can be fund n the ACTC website (See estimated cst breakdwn n the PN web page). All students admitted t the prgram are required t submit dcumentatin f immunizatins and a current TB test. PN students are als required t cmplete a drug screen and backgrund check arranged thrugh the prgram at the student s expense in rder t participate in learning at varius clinical sites.
