1 PRE-DEPARTURE ORIENTATION GUIDE fr the Benjamin Franklin Transatlantic Fellws Summer Institute June 27 July 25, 2015 Purdue University West Lafayette Indiana This rientatin guide will give yu infrmatin necessary t prepare fr yur trip t participate in Benjamin Franklin Transatlantic Fellws Summer Institute (BFTF) at Purdue University. Please take a few minutes t read thrugh this guide t determine the actins yu shuld take t prepare yurself fr the Institute. Purdue University, West Lafayette Welcme t Purdue University. Funded in 1869 Purdue has grwn t include mre than 65,000 students n all 4 campuses including 39,200 students n the main campus in West Lafayette, Indiana. The West Lafayette campus is cnveniently lcated between Indianaplis (60 miles/100 km) and Chicag (115 miles/180 km). Accrding t the mst recent enrllment statistics, Purdue University s ttal internatinal enrllment f 8,600 students ranks secnd amng Universities in the United States. The frms need t be signed by yu and a parent/guardian and returned t BFTF via (abalkute@purdue.edu) as scanned dcuments r faxed t +1 (765) (Attn: BFTF) by June 1 st Please bring the riginal signed frms with yu als.

Participant Infrmatin Sheet Pre-Institute Assignments T make the mst f yur time at the Institute and t help yu prepare fr yur upcming experience, we ask that yu wrk n the fllwing assignments prir t the U.S. prgram: (1) prepare a 3 minute presentatin abut the place yu cme frm. We encurage yu t be as creative as pssible, please dn t exceed the 3 minute time limit; (2) think hw yu can cntribute t the Institute talent shw and the Internatinal Cuisine Night (yes, yu will have t ck!), (3) what tpics yu want t discuss at ur discussin club, (4) think f a pssible cmmunity riented prject that yu can intrduce at the Institute and later implement when yu return t yur cmmunity. Academic Prgram The prgram will cnsist f five mdules, each representing a cmpnent f Benjamin Franklin s legacy: Internatinal Relatins Media & Jurnalism Civic Educatin & Demcratic Citizenship Science in the Glbal Cntext Service & Vlunteerism Each mdule is cmprised f a set f thematic presentatins, wrkshps, seminars, panel discussins, site visits, and ther interactive activities, cnducted by highly qualified faculty, graduate students, and area specialists. The Institute s academic curriculum is designed t incrprate and balance presentatins and practical activities. Fellws will have three, smetimes tw classes each day, t be held between 9 a.m. and 12 p.m. (tw classes) and 1:30 p.m. and 2:45 p.m. (ne class). T enhance individual cmprehensin and participatin, Fellws will be split int three grups fr daily debriefing sessins and several prjects. Students will be assigned readings frm prvided materials. Fr the first tw weeks, Fellws will be staying in the residence hall (student drm) n campus. Each rm in the residence hall will be shared by tw Fellws. We recmmend that Fellws bring their wn electrnic devices (laptps, ipads, tablets). Fellws will have an access t the Internet and Wi-Fi. Fellws will als be prvided with passwrds t use any f the mre than 6,000 cmputer wrkstatins n campus, and will be able t print materials free f charge. Remember t bring U.S. cmpatible adapters/cnverters fr yur devices. Site visits are planned as a cntinuatin f the academic activities and are essential t each mdule. The Fellws will visit Indianaplis, where they will tur the Indiana State Huse, learn abut federalism and hw state gvernment wrks. Other civic educatin-related site visits will take place

3 in Washingtn and Philadelphia (Independence Hall and Natinal Cnstitutin Center). Other site visits will include: Lafayette/Tippecane Battlegrund Indianaplis: city tur, Indiana War Memrial, Indiana State Museum Chicag: city tur, Shedd Aquarium, Willis Twer (frmerly knwn as Sears Twer, tallest building in the U.S.), Chicag Institute f Arts Washingtn: city tur, Capitl Hill tur, Department f State, Smithsnian Institutins, Newseum interactive museum; and the Hlcaust Memrial Museum Philadelphia: Franklin s Philadelphia city tur. Cultural and scial activities are integral t the Institute, helping yu better understand the diverse cultures f the United States and Eurpe, and develp new friendships. In additin t visiting museums, Institute cultural and scial activities will include: a July 4 th Independence Day picnic; Internatinal Cultures Night/Talent Shw; Cuntry presentatins; Internatinal Cuisine Night; visits t centers n campus; mvie nights; and visits t shws and sprting events. Fllw-n Prjects after the U.S. Institute This is ne f the mst imprtant parts f the Institute and it will take place after yu return hme. It is meant t help yu integrate the knwledge and skills yu will acquire thrughut yur participatin in the prgram and put them int practice. Fr the fllw-n activities, yu will be asked t develp an academic r cmmunity service prject that yu will put int practice nce yu return hme. Over this prcess yu will be receiving feedback and supprt frm yur BFTF mentrs and instructrs. Thrugh the fllw-n prject yu will demnstrate leadership skills and becme `ambassadrs` f psitive change in yur hme cmmunity. We strngly encurage yu t d a preliminary research and needs assessment fr a scially-riented prject in yur schl r cmmunity befre the Institute. Funds will be available t spnsr the mst prmising fllw-n prjects. There will be training sessins n prject grant writing that will help yu design and implement yur fllw-n prject. Arrival at the Institute The clsest large airprt t Purdue University is Indianaplis Internatinal Airprt. If yu are flying frm Eurpe, yur prt f entry int the United States will be ne f majr internatinal airprts (Dulles in Washingtn, JFK r La Guardia in New Yrk, Lgan in Bstn, r O Hare in Chicag) where yu will g thrugh Immigratin Cntrl and clear U.S. custms. Please read carefully Immigratin and Custms Cntrl regulatins befre yur transatlantic flight After yu are admitted t the United States and clear custms in the prt f entry, yu will take anther flight t Indianaplis Internatinal Airprt. After landing in Indianaplis, yu will take Lafayette Lim shuttle t Purdue University. Lafayette Lim bth is lcated at Grund Transprtatin. BFTF staff will als be present there t assist yu. We will make yur reservatin fr yu, yu will nly have t give yur name t the attendant r shuttle driver. Lafayette Lim shuttle runs every 2 hurs. 4 We expect that all Fellws will arrive n June 27, Yur drmitry is lcated apprximately 250 yards (200 meters) frm the Purdue West shuttle stp. BFTF staff will meet yu at the stp and direct yu t the drmitry. In the drmitry lbby, yu will find BFTF registratin where yu will receive all further instructins and assistance. Ldging During the Institute, yu will be staying (a) in a residence hall n the Purdue University campus, (b) with a hst family, and (c) in a htel in Philadelphia and student drmitry in Washingtn, D.C. When yu stay n the Purdue University campus, yu will have a special card (Purdue Cnference ID Card) that yu will use t gain access t yur flr. Male and female participants will be hused n separate flrs. BFTF Resident Assistants will be als staying in the residence hall. Fr the participants safety, a bed check will be cnducted each night. Each Fellw will share a rm with ne ther Fellw. The Fellws will use a shared bathrm n their flr. The drmitry bedrm has a separate bed, desk and dresser fr clthes fr each Fellw. Yu will be prvided with a set f linens fr yur bed and twels. Yu can change yur linen and twels as frequently as yu want fr n charge. Fr yur clthes, the residence hall has laundry facilities with washers and driers. Purdue University Husing Drug and Alchl Plicy N alchlic beverages are permitted in the University husing. It is illegal fr persns under the age f 21 t cnsume alchl in the United States. Use and/r psessin f illegal drugs and drug paraphernalia are prhibited n the Purdue University campuses. Vilatin f this cmmunity standard is cnsidered a serius ffense and students may be sent hme. The sale f tbacc r electrnic cigarets t persns under 18 years f age is frbidden by Indiana law. Smking is nly permissable in designated areas. The University Plice will enfrce all applicable lcal, state, and federal laws in accrd with established standing rders, prcedures and guidelines. Yu can find all infrmatin and Purdue University Residences plicies here: Please carefully read the infrmatin prvided. By agreeing t participate in the 2015 BFTF at Purdue University yu agree t fllw and respect Purdue University Residences plicies. Hmestays All Fellws will live with a hst family fr ten days f the Institute. All hst families are carefully screened and prvided an rientatin abut the prgram and their respnsibilities. Yu will meet yur hst family at a special receptin. The hmestay will prvide yu with anther pprtunity t experience American family life. Fellws may have a private rm r share a rm with anther Fellw r pssibly with a teenage family member (f the same gender). Each Fellw will have a separate bed. Yu will spend each evening and tw weekends with yur hst family. Yu may want t bring a small gift fr yur hst family as a tken f yur appreciatin.

5 Purdue Cnference ID Card After yu check in the residence hall, yu will receive yur Purdue Cnference ID card, which will give yu access t the residence hall, flr, campus services and facilities including dining halls, libraries, gyms, and swimming pls. Meals The BFTF Fellws will use a cmbinatin f cash and dining cards t purchase meals. During yur stay n campus, yu will have meals (breakfast, lunch, and dinner) in ne f several Dinning Curts, lcated near yur drm. Fellws will be als prvided with funds fr lunch n campus during hmestay; yu will have breakfast and dinner at yur family s hme. Purdue Dining Curts ffer a wide variety f fds t chse frm, including healthy and vegetarian meal ptins. We will try ur best t accmmdate yu. There are cnvenience stres lcated n campus fr snack fds and beverages. During field trips, the Fellws will eat in cafés and restaurants. Religius Observance If yu have religius practices that yu intend t cntinue bserving during BFTF, please let us knw n the Participant Infrmatin Sheet. We will try t accmmdate yur needs t the best f ur ability. Expectatins fr Participatin Cde f Cnduct Fellws are expected t attend all fficial BFTF activities (see draft schedule). Yu will nt be allwed t travel by yurself r g t visit relatives r friends during the prgram. All Fellws will be expected t sign and fllw the BFTF Cde f Cnduct, which states: I agree t treat each member f the BFTF team, including Fellws and Staff with respect and dignity and t handle any cnflict that might arise in an hnest and frthright manner and, if necessary with the supprt f the BFTF staff. I agree t fllw all reasnable requests made by BFTF staff, faculty, r Purdue University persnnel. I agree t participate fully in BFTF spnsred activities, and t the best f my ability t d s with curisity and eagerness t engage. I agree t abstain frm any and all drug and alchl use during the Institute. I agree t remain with my assigned BFTF grup at all times and nt venture ff n my wn r t leave campus withut the supervisin r express permissin f BFTF staff. As a BFTF Fellw, I agree t abide by this Cde f Cnduct and understand that my willful disregard f any f its agreements may result in the terminatin f my Fellwship. Mney/Cash Allwance All Fellws will receive a stipend upn arrival. The purpse f the stipend is t prvide sme mney fr incidental expenses, such as snacks, laundry, r city bus. We strngly recmmend that yu

6 make a budget t determine what additinal mney yu might need t bring with yu r access during the Institute. ATMs are available n campus and arund the Greater Lafayette Area. Make sure that yur bank supprts U.S. ATMs. Credit cards in yur name are als useful. It is a gd idea t plan a budget fr the amunt f mney yu may need ahead f time with yur family. Imprtant: If yu pay cash, remember that mst stres r services wn t accept bills larger than $20. ATMs in the United States typically d nt dispense bills in large denminatins. Shuld an emergency arise where yu need extra funds, mney can be wired arund the wrld via Western Unin r Mney Gramm. BFTF staff will shw yu hw t use these services if needed.
