Students must be enrlled in the Cllege f Medicine and in gd standing t earn credit fr Cmmunity Health I and II. a. During the summer between the first and secnd years f medical schl, students may earn credit fr Cmmunity Health I and are encuraged t d s. 2. Students will earn credit by cmpleting hurs and lgging them n the website, Clinic hurs must be lgged within 60 days f vlunteering. Health Educatin and Cmmunity Invlvement hurs must be lgged within 6 mnths f vlunteering. 3. Students may participate in rganizatin activities, such as vlunteering, withut participating in the elective curse. 4. T participate in the elective curses, students shuld visit fr mre infrmatin. All questins shuld be directed t the OU Cmmunity Health Alliance President. Enrllment 1. T be eligible t enrll in Cmmunity Health I, students must have cmpleted and dcumented 60 hurs f the curse requirements prir t enrlling fr the CHI r CHII elective during the fall f their furth year f medical schl.

T be eligible t enrll in Cmmunity Health II, students must have cmpleted and dcumented 60 hurs f the curse requirements prir t enrlling fr the CHI r CHII elective during the fall f their furth year f medical schl. 3. An hurs check fr graduatin will be cnducted and sent t the Deans Office in the fall semester f the furth year t ensure students have accrued enugh hurs t earn credit in Cmmunity Health I and/r Cmmunity Health II. 4. Students will enrll in the Deans Office when scheduling their furth year spring semester. 5. By enrlling in Cmmunity Health I r II yu are cmmitting t cmpletin f all curse requirements prir t the end f the tw week perid fr which yu are enrlled. Students may nly enrll in Cmmunity Health I r II during the mnths f March, April, r May f their furth year. 6. Failure t cmplete curse requirements in a scheduled curse may result in delay f graduatin. 7. If a student suspects they will be unable t cmplete the curse requirements after enrlling in CHI r CHII, they must cntact the Dean s ffice prir t February 1 f their furth year t amend their schedule. This is crucial fr btaining all credits required fr graduatin frm the OU Cllege f Medicine. 8. 3 Cmmunity Health I Begins upn the first day f the first year f medical schl. Hurs cmpleted prir t the first day f the first year f medical schl will nt cunt twards the CHI elective. Curse wrk must be cmpleted by the end f the tw week perid fr which yu are enrlled during the furth year f medical schl. 60 clinical hurs, 12 health educatin initiative hurs, and 8 cmmunity invlvement hurs are required fr curse credit. A graduatin check t verify hurs cmpleted twards CH I will be cnducted in the spring f furth year. T be eligible t enrll in Cmmunity Health I, students must have cmpleted and dcumented 60 hurs f the curse requirements prir t enrlling fr the CHI elective during the fall f their furth year f medical schl. Tw-week elective curse credit will be awarded upn apprval by the Curse Directr. Students are encuraged t cnsistently vlunteer at clinics and participate in educatinal experiences thrughut all fur years f medical schl. The curse may be cmpleted at either OU-OKC r OU-Tulsa. OU-Tulsa students may cmplete clinical hurs at the Bedlam Clinic. Specific curse requirements fr OU-Tulsa students shuld be cnfirmed with the Schl f Cmmunity Medicine and may vary frmt hse n the OKC campus. Students must be enrlled in the Cllege f Medicine in gd standing t earn credit. Academic standing in the Cllege f Medicine will be evaluated annually. If a student is fund t nt be in gd standing, the student will nt be allwed t earn credit until they return t gd standing. Curse Requirements - Clinical Vlunteer Hurs (60) 60 hurs vlunteering in apprved partner clinics. Hurs must be lgged nline within 60 days f vlunteering in rder t receive credit. Clinical hurs must be cmpleted at apprved Oklahma City partner clinics. OU- Tulsa students may cmplete clinical hurs at the Bedlam Clinic. Students are encuraged t chse 1 r 2 clinics in which t fcus their hurs t ensure cntinuity f care. Sign-up fr clinics varies with each individual clinic. Please visit fr infrmatin n hw t sign-up. If it is yur first time t vlunteer at the clinic, cntact the Student Clinic Liaisn fr vlunteer instructins. The Student Clinic Liaisn is yur resurce fr infrmatin abut the clinics. Hurs may nly be cunted twards either CHI r CHII. Hurs may nt be cunted twards bth CHI and CHII. Hurs vlunteered fr alternate curses (e.g. EPIC) may nt be used twards CHI r CHII. Clinical Medicine Facilitatr While the bulk f clinical hurs shuld be attained by vlunteering at apprved partner clinics, third and furth year medical students may attain

4 clinical hurs by serving as a Clinical Medicine facilitatr fr first and secnd year medical students. Students serving as facilitatrs fr Clinical Medicine will be supervised by the Clinical Medicine curse instructrs. Hurs must be lgged nline within 60 days f vlunteering in rder t receive credit. This cmpnent cvers a brad range f experiences. Service t the cmmunity must be demnstrated fr credit in this cmpnent. Please see the Cmmunity Invlvement sectin f the curse descriptin fr mre details. Cmmunity Invlvement Hurs must be apprved by the President f OU Cmmunity Health Alliance and the Curse Directr. Examples f Cmmunity Invlvement Prjects include but are nt limited t: Health Advcacy Prjects Health Dash Internatinal Healthcare Missin Trips Race fr the Cure Student Interest Grup Prjects Reflectin Paper/ Special Prject Students may chse between the tw fllwing assignments fr cmpletin f the curse nly ne f the tw needs t be cmpleted fr the curse. Reflectin Paper This paper must be electrnically submitted t the Curse Directr by the final day f yur elective time perid.

5 Reflectin papers must cincide with the fllwing frmat: Please include student name, student ID number, and date. Duble-space the essay and use ne inch margins. Cntent must include wrds. The Reflectin Paper cntent shuld address hw vlunteer experiences affected them. Tpic examples include: Attitudes tward the underserved Cmprehensin f challenges facing clinicians and patients with limited resurces Develpment f clinical skills Educatin Future cmmitment t serve Special Prject Must be pre-apprved by the Curse Directr. Must be utilized and implemented befre the end f the tw week perid fr which yu are enrlled during furth year. Gal f prject is t prvide knwledge, resurces, and experience, which will be used t prvide better care fr the underserved. Must be unique and innvative. 3-5 academic resurce citatins. Address the need fr this prject in cmmunity. Examples: Develpment f DM educatin curriculum fr clinics, STD curriculum fr adlescents at clinics/schls, utcmes based research n why/hw student clinic experience is valuable.

6 Cmmunity Health II Curse Requirements Hurs may be cmpleted during all fur years f medical schl. 80 Hurs f clinical vlunteer experience is required fr curse credit. Hurs must be lgged nline within 60 days f vlunteering in rder t receive credit. Yu d nt have t cmplete Cmmunity Health I t participate in Cmmunity Health II. - Clinical Vlunteer Hurs Clinical hurs must be cmpleted at apprved Oklahma City partner clinics. OU- Tulsa students may cmplete clinical hurs at the Bedlam Clinic. Students are encuraged t chse 1 r 2 clinics in which t fcus their hurs t ensure cntinuity f care. Students shuld fcus n prviding high quality care fr patients in cnjunctin with the attending at each clinic. Students are encuraged t mentr students in the first and secnd year class while at clinic. Students shuld serve as student team leaders at clinics including but nt limited t: Answering questins frm students that are within yur scpe f training Encuraging students t get invlved with patient care Prviding supervisin as skills allw Teaching students histry and physical exam skills Sign-up fr clinics varies with each individual clinic. 7 Health Educatin Initiatives Optins fr CHI (12 ttal hurs) Adpt-A-Dc, American Academy f Family Physicians and Schls fr Healthy Lifestyles This prgram is part f the prgramming f Schls fr Healthy Lifestyles. The prgram invites cmmunity physicians and medical students t adpt a schl in the OKC area and help supprt health educatin. Training and resurces are prvided by the Schls fr Healthy Lifestyles prgram. Students are expected t participate as an adpted student fr a minimum f 1-2 sessins each semester. The participatin can take many frms including: making classrm presentatins, prviding presentatins t staff and parents accrding t assessed needs and interests, bradcast health messages ver the schl public address system as part f daily annuncements, cnnect the schl with available cmmunity health resurces, participate in existing schl health activities and prjects (Jump rpe fr heart, Safe Kids Calitin activities, health fairs etc.) r assist with required physical fitness testing and health educatin assessment. Bridges t Access Planning Cmmittee Member Bridges t Access is an annual cnference put n by the OU Cmmunity Health Alliance. Bridges t Access is a free event that brings tgether students frm every cllege at the OUHSC campus alng with members frm the cmmunity. The gal is t learn and discuss the healthcare issues facing Oklahmans tday in rder t prepare students t take actin tward a better tmrrw. Each year Bridges t Access is planned by a cmmitted grup f students. These students dedicate themselves t educating the attendants f the cnference thrugh vlunteering their time t plan the events f the cnference. Thse n the planning cmmittee are invlved in educatin thrugh rganizing breakut sessin, crdinating with speakers and educatrs and/r prviding resurces fr the students attending. Planning Cmmittee Members will receive six Health Educatin hurs and fur Cmmunity Invlvement hurs. Sign-up fr the cmmittee will ccur in the fall f each year via . Dctrs Back T Schl, American Medical Assciatin and Schls fr Healthy Lifestyles Dctrs Back t Schl is a cmmunity utreach prgram started by the Medical Student Cuncil at the OU Cllege f Medicine. It is based upn a prgram created by the AMA, and adapted t fit ur primary bjective, t encurage Oklahma children f all sciecnmic and cultural backgrunds t lk at medicine as a career ptin. Since the prgram sends physicians and medical students int the cmmunity, it s als a great way t intrduce kids t prfessinal rle mdels. As future physicians, we want children t realize medicine in an ptin fr them. The mre children we encurage t pursue medicine, the better. On the day f ur scheduled visit, vlunteer medical students will g t the assigned schl t make the presentatin. It des nt require any audivisual equipment. Students will receive training abut the presentatin and be given all f the materials they will need, including a few medical prps. The presentatins can last anywhere frm 30 minutes t an hur depending

8 n hw much time is available in the schl s schedule. Please sign-up whenever Student Cuncil sends ut an cncerning the event. Ready, Set, Fit Curse Ready, Set, Fit is an educatin initiative t teach elementary students abut the imprtance f physical activity, emtinal well-being, and a healthy diet. Thrugh the cmbined effrt f medical students, health care prfessinals, and educatrs Ready, Set, Fit paves the way fr a healthier cmmunity. The Ready, Set, Fit missins are t: Infrm students n the benefits f living a healthy lifestyle Prvide health care prfessinals with pprtunities t becme invlved in their cmmunities health and fitness Inspire psitive change in health and fitness in ur cmmunity Multiple Ready, Set, Fit events are rganized each semester. Students can vlunteer by signing up via . Vlunteering primarily includes teaching the Ready, Set, Fit curriculum at a lcal schl. Be sure t lg yur hurs n the OUCHA website within 6 mnths. Student Driven Health Educatin Initiatives The OU Cmmunity Health Alliance recgnizes and embraces that all students have special talents t share with their fellw classmates. Therefre, Student Driven Health Educatin Initiatives gives students the means t prvide their classmates with knwledge abut a particular subject, enabling thse students participating t becme better educatrs t their future patients. These health educatin initiatives shuld fcus n imprving patient care r caregiver-patient relatins. Thse students wh wish t lead a sessin need t have their tpic and presentatin pre-apprved by the current OUCHA fficers and the Curse Directr. Tpics may include, but are nt limited t preventative medicine, patient educatin and cmmunicatin skills. These sessins shuld be designed s that students can use the knwledge that they have btained in the free clinic setting fr real patient needs. Sun Safety The missin f The Sun Safety Prgram is t educate elementary schl students abut the health f their skin, methds fr prtecting their skin frm the sun and preventing skin cancer in the future. Lcal elementary schls sign up fr the prgram thrugh Healthy Schls OK. The philanthrpy chair fr the Dermatlgy Interest Grup then selects dates in the spring, crdinates with vlunteers and helps guide the presentatins. Gals f the prgram are t: Educate students abut their skin and the effects f prlnged sun expsure, including an explanatin f the ABCDE s f Melanma. Spread awareness t parents and family members abut sun damage and hw t prtect their children frm the sun. Give student s guidelines regarding sunscreen use, sun expsure, and hw t prevent and spt skin cancer. Tar Wars Instructr: The missin f Tar Wars is t educate elementary students abut being tbacc-free, prvide them with the tls t make psitive decisins

9 regarding their health, and prmte persnal respnsibility fr their wellbeing. By utilizing a cmmunity-based apprach t mbilize family physicians, educatrs, and ther health care prfessinals, Tar Wars can accmplish its missin. Gals f the prgram are t: Educate and mtivate students t be tbacc-free. Mbilize health care prfessinals t becme practive in their cmmunity s health educatin. Encurage cmmunity invlvement in supprt f the Tar Wars prgram. Several Tar Wars prgrams are rganized each year. Sign-up when the OUCHA Educatin Chairs each class, assist with a Tar Wars prgram at a lcal schl, and then lg hurs n the website within 6 mnths. Vlunteering at a Health Fair Health fairs and screenings are a great way fr medical students t actively participate in their cmmunity. The gal f many health fairs is t prvide health educatin t a brad grup in the cmmunity. Health infrmatin may be distributed thrugh brchures and answering attendees questins. Often students chse t d a variety f screening including: bld pressure, finger stick glucse, BMI, and sharing infrmatin abut available free clinics in their area. Many student interest grups and campus rganizatins prvide pprtunities t participate as a vlunteer at health fairs thrughut the year.

Cmmunity Invlvement Hurs must be apprved by the President f OU Cmmunity Health Alliance and the Curse Directr. Hurs must be lgged six mnths f vlunteering. Independent prjects Prir t medical schl many students participate in valuable rganizatins/prjects that serve the cmmunity. If a student wuld like t cntinue their service independently frm ther grups/activities at OUHSC, we supprt their cmmunity invlvement. All independent prjects must be apprved by the curse directr t receive curse credit. Internatinal/Dmestic Service trip We supprt and encurage students t seek diversity in their clinical training, including internatinal service ptins. There are cuntless service trips every year cmpsed f OU medical students and students frm ther clleges. The time spent wrking and learning in internatinal envirnment is vastly different than thse ffered here in ur cmmunity clinics. Grups cnnected t ur campus that ffer resurces and infrmatin abut internatinal service include: Christian Medical and Dental Assciatin, Glbal Health Interest Grup, Baptist Medical Dental Fellwship ( ), and if yu chse t wrk utside OUHSC, there are many internatinal service grups in gd standing with the AMA. A maximum f 8 vlunteer hurs during a single internatinal r dmestic service trip may be cunted as Cmmunity Invlvement hurs twards the CHI elective. Psitive Directins Mentring Prgram INTEGRIS Health began the Psitive Directins Mentring Prgram in 1991 as a business/schl partnership that encurages vlunteers t becme mentrs at targeted Oklahma City elementary schls. The bjectives f the prgram are t build self-esteem, establish psitive relatinships, help children vercme negative behavirs, and t imprve the student s classrm participatin. The time cmmitment is nly ne hur per week, during the schl day. Yu will spend apprximately 30 minutes tutring yur mentee and 30 minutes playing utdr r indr games with them. It s a great prgram if yu enjy wrking with kids and dn t have a lt f free time. Service in leadership t yur class, r OU-COM Student cuncil is valuable time spent, and OU Cmmunity Health Alliance encurages this venue f service. Elected fficials rganize events fr students and the cmmunity, and have the valuable pprtunity t decide hw t allcate campus resurces. Interest grups prvide interesting prgramming that prvides valuable career develpment pprtunities, and ften d imprtant cmmunity utreach. Each leadership psitin may cunt as 2 cmmunity invlvement hurs

11 twards the CHI elective. Team Everest Team Everest is a mentring prgram that pairs medical students with juvenile cancer patients wh are treated at the Jimmy Everest Center fr Cancer. The students and kids are matched based n cmmn interest and age/gender preferences. Dr. Renee McNall-Knapp is the academic advisr and clinician fr many f the patients. Whiz Kids Whiz Kids is a faith-based, ne-n-ne vlunteer tutring/mentring prgram fcusing n first thrugh eighth grade students wh live in areas which have sme f the highest drput rates and lwest sciecnmic levels in Oklahma City. Whiz Kids is practive and preventative in nature, targeting inner-city schls and students wh are reading belw grade level and wh culd benefit mst frm a ne-n-ne relatinship with a caring adult.
