The Kentucky Center for African American Heritage Presents: James Pate s KKK Series Kin Killin Kin September 13th, 2018 September 14 - November 12, W. Muhammad Ali Blvd. The community is invited to attend the opening reception and gallery talk by the artist James Pate on Friday, September 21, 2018, 6:00-9:00 pm. Please also attend and to spread the word about the Youth Voices Against Violence Forum held at Kentucky Center for African American Heritage on Saturday, November 3, 1:00-3:00 pm. This panel of youth will examine the themes of gun violence within the context of public health, bystander action, healing through arts, and mobilizing for change through community dialogues. The exhibition Kin Killin Kin is a striking visual experience exploring youth violence communities. Artist James Pate uses charcoal to create compelling visual scenes combining the iconography of the Ku Klux Klan, the Civil Rights Movement, and all too familiar images of violence. Pate s artwork places the viewer inside the acts of violence and the conversation, demanding their attention and reflection on the challenges, causes, and insidious nature of violence. The rise in suicide is an alarming public health issue. It is also an issue we each can take action to address. There are more than 80 free trainings on a proven suicide prevention technique being offered around our city the week of September 9-15, National Suicide Prevention Week. Anyone 18 or older can take the training. You need no health, healthcare, mental health or counseling knowledge to participate. The training, called Question, Persuade, Refer (QPR), helps participants learn the myths about suicide as well as warning signs and includes how to give someone hope and help. Anyone who is interested can visit QPRLOU.com to find and register for classes being offered all over the city. The Big Table: The World s Largest Potluck Sunday, September 16 from 5:00pm - 7:00pm Iroquois Park Help us break a world record! You re invited to join 3,500 of your closest friends for The Big Table: World s Largest Potluck event at Iroquois Park on Sunday, September 16 from 5pm - 7pm. At the event, people will be organized into tables of 8, some of whom will be strangers. Volunteers will help facilitate the evening's conversation. We'll share stories about the food we bring, about meaningful tables, about our lives, about ourselves. There will be no central stage or entertainment schedule. The only goal will be to engage with each other, and leave as friends rather than strangers. Maybe we'll even break a record! We are hoping for at least 3,500 attendees, which would put Louisville on the map for the World's Largest Potluck. Each participant must bring a dish to share that will feed up to 6 people, along with a recipe cards. Plates, napkins and utensils will be provided, but please bring serving utensils and a beverage. 3 UofL Fall Musicale Concert Series Redeemer Lutheran Church (3640 River Park Drive) Redeemer Lutheran Church is pleased to announce a UofL Fall Musicale Concert Series by the Department of Music. The series will continue on Sunday, September 2:00pm, and continues for 4 Sundays. Various graduate and faculty ensembles will present a diverse line up music including guitar, string, vocal, woodwind and brass. Main Street) The Frazier History Museum will host Nationallyrecognized Urban Design Consultant Joshua Poe as he explores the racist origins of Louisville s 1938 redlining maps and the far-reaching impact they have had on our city. The presentation will introduce how urban design shapes human behavior and end with a discussion of current city planning efforts, gentrification, and strategies to create equitable development in formerly redlined areas. Yet the boats had to halt at the 26 drop at the Falls of the Ohio where Louisville is today. Draymen portaged freight to the bottom of the Falls where Portland emerged to service traffic. Horse drawn wagons slogged along dirt paths until a plank toll road connected the cities. The 3 mile long Turnpike opened 1818 and greatly reduced the time it took to make the trip. After the Portland Canal opened in 1830, use of the Turnpike declined and the route eventually became Portland Avenue Canoemobile Voyages Returns to Shawnee Park Canoemobile is coming to Louisville once again! Join Louisville Parks and Recreation, Jefferson Memorial Forest, and our partners for a free canoe trip on the Ohio River. Canoes will take off from both Riverview and Shawnee parks. These trips will be conducted in safe and stable Voyageur canoes, which hold 9 to15 participants. Staff and all safety equipment will be provided. Wear comfortable clothing that can get wet - no flip flops. The event is open to everyone 3 and older. Participants under 18 must have their parent or legal guardian sign a waiver. Farm Film Festival September 15th 7:00pm - 10:00pm Holy Trinity Clifton Campus (2117 Payne Street) Louisville Grows' inaugural film festival will bring a series of feature length, independently produced films and shorts together in support of our agriculture community. Each film will explore questions of farmland access, rural livelihoods and the sustainability of people and place. Pre-screening and intermission activities will feature booths by exhibiting partners. Each ticket purchased will be eligible for door prizes from local businesses during intermission. 5 Level I Spanish Classes Offered Mondays October 8 - December 10 from 1pm - 3pm Maloney Center, 1200 South Shelby Street The Office of Multicultural Ministry will offer Basic Level I Spanish Classes for persons wishing to communicate and become more involved with the Hispanic community. There will be ten classes designed to prepare students to engage in basic conversational Spanish. The classes will take on Mondays, from 1:00 pm - 3:00pm. starting on October 8, 2018 through December 10, 2018 at the Maloney Center, 1200 South Shelby Street, Louisville, KY The class dates are: 10/8, 10/15, 10/22, 10/29, 11/5, 11/12, 11/19, 11/26, 12/3, and 12/10/2018. A minimum of five students are necessary for the course to take place. The fee is $70.00 which includes a book and other materials. Main Street) The Connecting Conversations series began in early 2016 to inspire honest dialogue around issues vital to an inclusive community and healthy neighborhoods. Community leaders and citizens from across the city gather to share ideas and develop solutions to challenging issues facing Louisville s most disadvantaged neighborhoods. Louisville Urban League Brings Miniature Golf to Broadway Open daily until 4:00pm Next to the Louisville Urban League (1535 W. Broadway) Thanks to the opening of a miniature golf course, west Louisville now has a new place that families can use to help improve their skills and further pursue their passion for this popular game. The Louisville Urban League (LUL) recently opened the course next to their headquarters on West Broadway, and welcomes the community to enjoy this investment in fun. The new 18-hole course is free and open to the community. LUL will provide the clubs and golf balls to anyone with an I.D. or a deposit of a personal item. 5

African American Theatre Program 30th Anniversary Gala Saturday, November 3 at 7:00pm The University Club (200 E. Brandeis Ave.) The University of Louisville African American Theatre Program is celebrating 25 years of service with its fundraiser gala. The gala will be hosted by Wave 3 s Dawne Gee and will include dinner, a silent auction, and live entertainment. Theatre Arts and AATP faculty, staff, students, and alumni will be in attendance. We will honor past AATP directors during the event, including Professor Emeritus Dr. Lundeana Thomas and Professor Nefertiti Burton, Theatre Arts Chair at Howard University. For more information and to purchase tickets please call Jessica Key at (502) Buffalo Soldiers of Kentucky to Host Memorial Dedication for Colonel Charles Young September 22 at 1:00pm Colonel Charles Young Park (2721 Lytle Street) The Buffalo Soldiers of Kentucky will host a Memorial Dedication for Colonel Charles Young, a decorated American Military Commander, at the park named in his honor on September 22, The event will begin at 1pm at Colonel Charles Young Park located at 2721 Lytle Street (Lytle Street West of 27th Street) in the Portland neighborhood. Colonel Young was a native Kentuckian born in Mayslick, Kentucky. The park is the site of a former African-American elementary school that opened in 1876 as the Portland Colored School and renamed Charles Young School during the school year. The school closed after the school year and was demolished, making way for the park soon after. 8 Metro Parks and Recreation Fall Open House Meetings Thursday, November 8 from 6:00pm -7:30pm Molly Leonard Portland Community Center (640 N. 27th Street) Louisville Parks and Recreation will be hosting seven open house-style public meetings beginning September 13 at the California Community Center. Director Seve Ghose said the meetings will not necessarily focus on a particular topic but will give the public an opportunity to ask questions and voice concerns. We re looking forward to having a conversation and hearing the public s ideas on how we can improve what we re doing, said Ghose. The following meetings will be held from 6:00pm -7:30pm in District 5: Thursday, November 8 from 6:00pm -7:30pm Molly Leonard Portland Community Center (640 N. 27th Street) The Filson Historical Society Presents: Made to Order the Fashion of Geneva Howard Bell Ends December 7, 2018 Filson Historical Society (1310 S. 3rd Street) The exhibition includes custom-made textiles and hats from educator and activist Geneva Howard Bell s ( ) collection, dating between 1970 and The exhibition also features photographs of Geneva and her husband, Dr. Jesse Bell ( ), the first African American physician at Louisville s Jewish Hospital. Curators and Filson staff will be available to answer questions about the items on display and the history behind them. This exhibit is free and open to the public. For more information about these and other upcoming exhibits, please visit filsonhistorical.org/exhibits. Shawnee Park Basin Project The Shawnee Basin Project is well underway. Construction activities in support of MSD s Shawnee Park Basin Project have begun near the TARC turn around. These construction activities consist of utility relocations (i.e. water, sanitary, gas and electric). Access for residence will be maintained during these construction activities. The Fresh Stop Markets (FSM) are run by leaders in a grassroots food justice movement that operates from the belief that fresh food is a basic human right. FSMs are volunteer, community-driven farm-fresh food markets that pop up bi-weekly at local churches and community centers in neighborhoods that do not have grocery stores or farmers markets. Shareholders ( customers ) agree to cooperate and pay ahead of time, on an income-based sliding scale. The sliding scale means food is affordable and everyone is included. WIC participants pay $6, those at or below 185 percent federal poverty guidelines pay $12, others pay $25, and those who would like to invest in the community pay $40. SNAP IS ACCEPTED. Everyone gets the same food!
