The Daughters of Greatness series provides a place for dialogue and discussion on current issues of justice, community engagement, and social movements within the Louisville area and beyond. Fourth Street Saturday, February 25th at 5:30 pm The Chestnut Street Family YMCA will hold its 38th Annual Black Achievers Awards Celebration on Saturday, February 25th at the Galt House Hotel, Archibald Cochran Ballroom, at 5:30pm. The awards banquet honors local high school students with over $1 million in scholarships. Local adult achievers, who are selected by their corporations or civic groups, are honored as well. Also, recognized during the banquet will be the Youth Achiever of the Year, Jayla Langford; Adult Achiever of the Year, Michael Young and Distinguished Achiever, Keith Hamilton, LLB Manufacturing. The Keynote Speaker will be Nate Howard, founder of Movement BE, a non-profit organization that creates curriculum to help young people discover their personal story through poetry. The program, modeled after a similar program in Harlem, was started in 1980 as a vehicle to mentor African-American youth in Louisville. It is supported with funding by local corporations, civic groups and individuals. Student participants, in grades 8-12, explore various career opportunities, earn scholarships, tour industries and colleges and participate in work-study programs. 3 Kentucky African Americans Against Cancer Educational Program to Increase Colorectal Screenings Immaculate Heart of Mary Louis Coleman Jr Drive Sunday s, February 19th and 26th at 10:30 am. Colorectal Cancer is the 2nd most common cancer in African Americans. Immaculate Heart of Mary will be hosting educational programs to increase colorectal screenings on Sundays, February 19th and 26th at 10:30 am. To participate in the three educational session on colorectal cancer, please call to register Neighborhood House Race for Success 2017 Muhammad Ali Center N 6th Street Thursday, February 23rd from 5:30 pm to 8:30 pm Neighborhood House is excited to announce the 9th annual Race for Success on Thursday, February 23 at the Muhammad Ali Center. The evening will feature a silent auction, dinner and cocktails and a special performance from Louisville natives and America's Got Talent finalists, Linkin' Bridge. Public Hearing for Civic Participation in Developing the 2017 Action Plan Tuesday, February 28th at 6:00 p.m. Western Library S. 10th St. Develop Louisville will hold a Public Hearing on Tuesday, February 28th starting at 6:00 pm at Western Library, located at 604 S. 10th St. The focus of the hearing will be the use of U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development (HUD) entitlement grants for the next fiscal year (July 1, June 30, 2018). Entitlement grant funding includes Community Development Block Grant (CDBG), HOME Investment Partnerships, Emergency Solutions Grant (ESG), and Housing Opportunities for Persons with AIDS (HOPWA). These grant funds are used to provide decent, affordable housing, ensure suitable living environments, and expand economic opportunities, principally for low and moderate income persons. This public hearing will focus on identifying the needs and priorities of the community. A second public hearing will be held in late April after the draft plan is published for comment. If you or your organization would like to present comments regarding the prioritization of services and programs, please come prepared to speak briefly on these matters. Broadway What is the best way to help young people make good decisions now and as they grow older? Is it by restricting their good choices and running your youth program like a drill sergeant? No!! Youth learn how to make good choices by making good choices, not following directions. The Youth Voice method will teach participants how to maintain a delicate balance between helping youth feel power and control, while still providing youth with safety, structure and support. For more information please contact jhudsonlegacy@hotmail.com Louisville Metro Financial Incentives and Loan Programs As you start and grow your business, the Louisville Forward Team can assist you with applicable public incentives and navigating the process of opening your doors. Louisville Metro has local incentives, including low interest loans, which assist with start-up capital, working capital and capital investments to commercial and public properties, as well as tax abatement programs, to save you money as you grow your business. Manufacturing Tax Moratorium This program allows companies tax relief for locating or expanding a manufacturing facility in Louisville Metro. The Manufacturing Tax Moratorium allows property taxes to be abated for five years for: A new manufacturing company locating in, or moving into, Louisville Metro; or the increased value of a building/ equipment for an exisiting manufacturing company that is expanding its operations for a new product line in Louisville Metro. Property Assessment Moratorium This program allows the waiver of the local incremental tax value for added improvements from the assessment of a structure for five years. The following properties are eligible: Structures older than 25 years if improvements are at least 25% of the property s value; Structures in a qualifying target area (a census tract where at least 70% of residents are below 80% of the median income for Jefferson County) are eligible if improvements are at least 10% of the property s value; or The qualifying property will, at the conclusion of the improvement plan, be LEED-certified. - Microbusiness Development Program - This loan program helps low and moderate income business owners gain access to capital to help start or grow their business. The microbusiness program is funded through a federal Community Development Block Grant, and business owners must meet income and funding eligibility. A microbusiness employs five of fewer people, including the owner. The loan program also includes training and technical assistance. METCO - The Metropolitan Business Development Corporation governs metro government s small business loans, and provides financial assistance through commercial loans for new and expanding businesses, including façade, accessibility and gap financing loans. These loans are evaluated on project cost and fund availability, with a variety of interest rates, depending on the loan program. Pre-application is available online. 7

8 West Louisville Small Business Initiative To generate more job and wealth creation opportunities in the nine neighborhoods of west Louisville, Louisville Forward s West Louisville Small Business Initiative provides new, innovative services and support for enterprises and small businesses which are located in west Louisville. Stop by The Nia Center for more info and assistance. Business Services - Mentoring: Louisville Forward and Louisville Independent Business Alliance (LIBA) are partnering to pair experienced entrepreneurs and other professionals with west Louisville small business experience to provide counseling on business ownership. These mentors will provide information about business startup issues, ongoing operations and scalability. - Training Opportunities - Louisville Metro Department of Community Services, in partnership with Louisville Forward, offers Exploring Entrepreneurship, a one-hour workshop introducing self-employment, and Power Up, a seven-week class about starting a business and writing a business plan. - Financial Literacy Open House - Louisville Forward and the Department of Community Services host an Open House twice annually with other financial resource and capital access providers who offer lending programs to small business owners. - Ongoing Support - Small businesses will become part of a new customer management system that connects them to other small business service providers, such as Small Business Development Center and Small Business Administration, to keep in touch, and to follow up with the business owner for next steps. Financial Assistance - - Business Accelerator Loan Program - New loan program, up to $50,000, five-year term, with no collateral requirements. This loan program is available for small business owners in the night neighborhoods of west Louisville (Algonquin, California, Chickasaw, Park DuValle, Park Hill, Parkland, Portland, Russell, Shawnee). - Five year repayment terms. Borrower may request up to one year of interest-only payments during the first year of the life of the loan - Repayment forgiveness - a business in good standing is eligible for forgiveness of the last three payments of its loan. If principle payments have been made during the life of the loan, or payoff was made early, the benefit will be equal to three regular payments (up to $2,000). - Interest rate is 12%, or 7% with incentives - Funds can be used only to start or expand a business. - Loan recipients must meet with resource partner during first year of operation. - To qualify: applicants should be prepared to submit a business plan, loan application or personal finance statement that supports the loan application. The loan application will consider applicants previous two years of tax income statements. The applicant will need to supply a letter from banking institution refusing a loan and applications must be approved by the METCO Board. Workforce Development - Training Programs Louisville Forward connects small business owners with training programs that meet their needs, specifically for food and retail services.
