Your dedication is greatly appreciated! Dear Homemaker, The summer season is upon us already! Fair, EXPO, gardening, canning, and much more! Often, it s hard to find the time to get everything accomplished. I know it will be a busy Homemaker year as well, and I hope to start off on a positive note! We have many upcoming dates to remember but the most important at this time is EXPO. Be thinking of items that you have crafted, photographed, canned, drawn, or anything else that would qualify for entry. Remember to focus on quality not quantity when you re choosing these items. 2 Celebrate Independence Day Independence Day is a day of family celebrations with picnics and barbecues, showing a great deal of emphasis on the American tradition of political freedom. Activities associated with the day include watermelon or hotdog eating competitions and sporting events, such as baseball games, three-legged races, swimming activities and tug-of-war games. Many people display the American flag outside their homes or buildings. Many communities arrange fireworks that are often accompanied by patriotic music. The most impressive fireworks are shown on television. Some employees use one or more of their vacation days to create a long weekend so that they can escape the heat at their favorite beach or vacation spot. Independence Day is a patriotic holiday for celebrating the positive aspects of the United States. Many politicians appear at public events to show their support for the history, heritage and people of their country. Above all, people in the United States express and give thanks for the freedom and liberties fought by the first generation of many of today's Americans. The Statue of Liberty is a national monument that is associated with Independence Day Blood Drive There will be 2 community blood drives this summer at the Extension Office from 12 noon to 6 p.m. The first is June 16 and the second is July 23. Clubs to work the June 16 drive: Charity 11:45-3:00 p.m.(town and Country Plaza marquee sign) and Country Charmers 3:00-6:15 p.m. Clubs to work the July 21 drive: Silver Thimbles 11:45-3:00 (Town and Country Plaza marquee sign) and Sunnybrook 3:00-6:15 p.m. It is important to have one or two people from your club to work. Bring 3 dozen homemade or deli cookies, or something good for donors to eat. ALL Homemakers are asked to tell others about the drive anyway you can. Thank you for volunteering! Food Preservation Boot Camp July 14, 10 a.m. - 2 p.m. July 16, 5-9 p.m. Join us for a hands-on class full of canning do s and don ts! Whether you re a canning expert, have never canned before, or still don t feel comfortable with a pressure canner, you will benefit from this class. If you plan to participate, please call the office at to sign up. What s New With Canning Lids? The USDA recommends the use of self-sealing two-piece metal caps (lids plus screw bands) for home canning. For years, lid manufacturers have instructed us to preheat the flat metal lids in simmering water to soften the sealing compound before use. But if you use Ball or Kerr brand lids, your home canning has just gotten a little easier preheating the lids is no longer required. The lids themselves have not changed. However, years of research by Jarden Home Brands, the maker of Ball and Kerr lids, have shown that preheating their lids is not necessary to obtain good seals. You just need to wash the lids in hot soapy water, rinse them well and keep them at room temperature until you re ready to use them. If you prefer, it s still safe to preheat the lids in simmering (180 degrees F) water before use, but you should never boil them. Boiling the lids can lead to seal failures. Whichever brand of canning lids you use, you should always follow the manufacturer s recommendations for preparing and applying the lids. Remember that screw bands can be reused if they are in good condition, but the self-sealing lids can be used only once. They will not seal a second time. For more information on safe home canning, contact your local county Extension office. Reference: Jarden Home Brands (2015). Canning Lids 101. Retrieved February 12, 2015, from lids-101 Source: Debbie Clouthier, Extension Associate for Food and Nutrition; University of Kentucky, College of Agriculture
3 Homemaker Donation Day for August Family Picnic and Auction One Man s Junk is Another Man s Treasure! June 22 and July 20 8:30 a.m. - 4:30 p.m., Extension Office (lower level) Donation Days have been scheduled! If you want to donate good junk, we will store it for the silent auction and regular auction that will be in August. Homemakers will use their Homemaker Bucks to spend on donated items. We all have good junk that we don t need or gifts that just aren t what we wanted. If it is something that is gently used or new that someone else would like to have, we will be glad to take it and store until August. We will not accept clothing or broken items, however, we will accept accessories such as scarves and jewelry. Many of us are in the Spring Cleaning mode with our houses and are working to de-clutter and get organized, so think of us when you do. The family Picnic and Auction will be a fun and exciting event in August, so don t lose your homemaker bucks!
