The meeting will be held Monday, February 9th at Western Middle School located at 2201 West Main Street at 6:30 P.M. This informational session will provide an opportunity for you to learn about projects MSD will construct in your neighborhood to address untreated sewage entering our local waterways during rain events. District 5 Residents are urged to attend & find out what is planned for your neighborhood. Here is a link to make your nominations: National Save Our Sons Night Friday, February 6, PM to 6 PM Westend School 3628 Virginia Avenue Black Butterfly Inc., The Barber Academy and Virtuous Entertainment have joined together with FATHERS INCORPORATED to present the 1st Annual National Save Our Sons Night on Friday, February 6 from 4 to 6 PM at the Westend School. On this evening we encourage fathers/men to find ways to spend a significant amount of teachable and fun time with their sons. We are also asking organizations to plan an event in their city to provide a place where fathers/sons or men/boys can participate. We ve come to learn that time with our children is more valuable than our money. It is the memories of spending time together that last a lifetime. Portland Museums Valentine s Workshop For Children Portland Museum, 2308 Portland Avenue Saturday, February 7, :30-4:30 p.m. The Portland Museum presents the Valentine s Workshop for Children! All children are invited to come out and print their own Valentine cards with Nick and Robert of Hound Dog Press. Children will also be able to decorate their cards with artist Annette Cable. The Food in Neighborhood Community Coalition is convening a meeting with representatives from any and all organizations, individuals and businesses working to improve the food system in the Louisville area and they hope that you will join! The meeting will be held Tuesday, February 10th, from 11 am to 1 pm at the Centennial Room in that Louisville Free Public Library Main Branch. You must bring your own lunch. A snack and drink will be provided. Shawnee Parent and Community Program Challenger Learning Center at the Shawnee Thursday, February 26th The Shawnee s Parent and Community Advisory Council is on a roll but we are still in need of more parent and community involvement! If you would like to offer support and knowledge to Shawnee to help students, parents and the community you are invited to join in the council. The Louisville Fair Housing Coalition presents Making Louisville Home for Us All New Directions Housing Corp 1000 E. Liberty Street Tuesday, February 10th 2 P.M. In Honor of Black History Month The Louisville Fair Housing Coalition presents a Public Forum on Louisville Metro Government's action plan to end housing segregation. The forum, titled "Making Louisville Home for Us All" is set to be held Tuesday, February 10th at 2:00 pm at New Directions Housing Corp, 1000 E. Liberty St. The Event is FREE and open to the public! The forum will feature a presentation on the history of segregation in Louisville by the University of Louisville's Anne Braden Institute for Social Justice Research. There will also be a panel discussion about the plan and implementation with Carolyn Miller-Cooper of Louisville Metro Human Relations Commission, Juan Peña of the KY Commission on Human Rights, Lee Ann Thomas of the Center for Accessible Living. Louisville Grows Hosts First-Ever Board Raising Social The Green Building 732 East Market Street Thursday, February 12 5:30 to 7:00 P.M. Louisville Grows is hosting its first-ever Board Raising Social on Thursday, February 12th from 5:30-7:00pm at the Green Building, located at 732 E. Market Street. Even if you are not currently available to join the Louisville Grows board, our small group of current board members needs your help in identifying and connecting to a wider pool of potential board and committee members. Please join us! Louisville Grows mission is to grow a just and sustainable community in Louisville through urban agriculture, urban forestry, and environmental education. Our projects such as the People's Garden, the Shippingport Memorial Garden, and Love Louisville Trees have helped to provide food and expanded green spaces to communities around the city and in West Louisville. Interested in serving on a Metro Board or Commission? Councilwoman Hamilton is in need of volunteers to serve on the Louisville Grows Board, Board of Zoning Adjustment & The Planning Commission. The 3:1 Project Director/Coordinator at The Shawnee, Erica Young is seeking mentors for the community mentor pilot program! If you possess energy and enthusiasm as well as educational success (minimum high school diploma) then we welcome you to join! Mentors should be available to make a weekly 1-hour commitment to meet with a student at The Shawnee on campus for the remainder of this school year (through May 2015) between 8am-2pm, on the same day every week (M, T, W, Th, or F). We are excited to see the mentoring relationships develop and positively affect both the mentee and mentor! The next Volunteer training will be held Friday, February 6, 8-10am. With the help of Councilwoman Cheri Bryant Hamilton, the 43-unit apartment complex located at 225 W. 42nd Street, received over $1 Million in forgivable loans and grants supplied by the Kentucky Housing Corp, Metro Government, and the Lead-Safe Louisville Project. Due to the financial assistance, the building will receive a full renovation that includes 450 new windows, roofing, masonry work and needed interior renovations. 6

This spring, Louisville Grows is offering residents of the Shawnee Neighborhood 165 FREE TREES through the Love Louisville Trees Program. In order to receive a tree you are encouraged to attend the planting day event March 28th from 10 am 2 pm and help to plant your tree and 1-2 others and care for the tree for the first 3 years after planting. If you are physically unable to plant a tree, you can volunteer at the registration table or assist in other ways. We are primarily interested in planting trees in front yards and in publicly owned easements or right of ways, but will consider planting trees on larger properties or backyards.
