Smith Jr sherman.smith@louisvilleky.gov Web address: district 5 The Leadership Louisville Center is leading an effort to identify the everyday people who are doing extraordinary things in our community, specifically in West Louisville by creating the West Louisville Connectors project. The goal of the West Louisville Connectors project is to elevate some of West Louisville s greatest assets its people. Through the identification and recognition of West Louisville s Connectors, the Leadership Louisville Center plans to celebrate this network of leaders committed to serving the common good and develop a higher level of connection and leadership in the city. The West Louisville Connectors will also have the opportunity to interact with the work of the 2014 Bingham Fellows and Leadership Louisville Center programs. Nomination process for West Louisville Connectors project: All are invited to make nominations for the people they know who live, work or care about West Louisville. Nominations can be made through January 31, 2015 at or by calling Nomination forms will also be available through mail and at various community locations in West Louisville. Seven Counties and The Shawnee Neighborhood Transformation Youth Coalition has made plans to resubmit an application for a Drug Free Communities Grant. A working meeting will occur Friday, January 30. The Chairman, Vice Chairman, Seven Counties Representative, and two residents of Shawnee will attend in order to flush out a work plan based on recommendations from last year s grant. 2 Louisville Grows Hosts First-Ever Board Raising Social The Green Building 732 East Market Street Thursday, February 12 5:30 to 7:00 P.M. Louisville Grows is hosting its first-ever Board Raising social on Thursday, February 12th from 5:30-7:00pm at the Green Building, located at 732 E. Market Street. Even if you are not currently available to join the Louisville Grows board, our small group of current board members needs your help in identifying and connecting to a wider pool of potential board and committee members. Please join us! Louisville Grows mission is to grow a just and sustainable community in Louisville through urban agriculture, urban forestry, and environmental education. Our projects such as the People's Garden, the Shippingport Memorial Garden, and Love Louisville Trees have helped to provide food and expanded green spaces to communities around the city and in West Louisville. Planting trees can help to reduce energy bills by 30%, increase the value of your property by 10%, improve storm water absorption, beautify neighborhoods, and purify air. This spring, Louisville Grows is offering residents of the Shawnee Neighborhood 165 FREE TREES through the Love Louisville Trees Program. In order to receive a tree you are encouraged to attend the planting day event March 28th from 10 am 2 pm and help to plant your tree and 1-2 others and care for the tree for the first 3 years after planting. If you are physically unable to plant a tree, you can volunteer at the registration table or assist in other ways. We are primarily interested in planting trees in front yards and in publicly owned easements or right of ways, but will consider planting trees on larger properties or backyards. If you would like a free canopy tree for your front yard or easement, call or ifo@louisvillegrows.org The Voice of Louisville Civil Rights Association ask for you to join the Green Ribbon Program. 3 Film Premiere to Benefit Neighborhood House Saturday, Jan. 31st 12:30pm W.L. Lyons Brown Theatre 315 West Broadway Morgan Atkinson, a regular volunteer and supporter of Neighborhood House, is committed to making a difference in the lives of our children and families. The premiere of his documentary titled "The Many Storeys and Last Days of Thomas Merton" will benefit Neighborhood House. The Center for Interfaith Relations is hosting this FREE celebration. Organizations supporting this event include: Actors Theatre of Louisville, Kentucky Opera, Louisville Orchestra, Louisville Public Media, and the Kentucky Center for Performing Arts. Doors open at noon and donations will be accepted at the event. It s time to change our financial habits and become more fiscally responsible! 4 The Shawnee is still looking for mentors! The 3:1 Project Director/Coordinator at The Shawnee, Erica Young is seeking mentors for the community mentor pilot program! If you possess energy and enthusiasm as well as educational success (minimum high school diploma) then we welcome you to join! Mentors should be available to make a weekly 1-hour commitment to meet with a student at The Shawnee on campus for the remainder of this school year (through May 2015) between 8am-2pm, on the same day every week (M, T, W, Th, or F). We are excited to see the mentoring relationships develop and positively affect both the mentee and mentor! The next Volunteer trainings will be held Wednesday, February 4 from 12-2pm and Friday, February 6, 8-10am. The meeting will be held Monday, February 9th at Western Middle School located at 2201 West Main Street at 6:30 P.M. This informational session will provide an opportunity for you to learn about projects MSD will construct in your neighborhood to address untreated sewage entering our local waterways during rain events. District 5 Residents are urged to attend & find out what is planned for your neighborhood. If you are unable to attend, questions and comments pertaining to this plan may also be submitted via at commentsioap@msdlouky.org The Food in Neighborhood Community Coalition is convening a meeting with representatives from any and all organizations, individuals and businesses working to improve the food system in the Louisville area and they hope that you will join! In Honor of Black History Month The Louisville Fair Housing Coalition presents a Public Forum on Louisville Metro Government's action plan to end housing segregation. The forum, titled "Making Louisville Home for Us All" is set to be held Tuesday, February 10th at 2:00 pm at New Directions Housing Corp, 1000 E. Liberty St. The Event is FREE and open to the public! The forum will feature a presentation on the history of segregation in Louisville by the University of Louisville's Anne Braden Institute for Social Justice Research. There will also be a panel discussion about the plan and implementation with Carolyn Miller-Cooper of Louisville Metro Human Relations Commission, Juan Peña of the KY Commission on Human Rights, Lee Ann Thomas of the Center for Accessible Living. All-Male Valentine Fashion Show A benefit for West Louisville Community Ministries Quinn Chapel AME Church Saturday, February 14th 12 noon to 3 p.m. Reverend Geoffrey Ellis, B.G. and Me Modeling Club and Lead by Example present the All-Male Valentine Fashion Show at Quinn Chapel AME Church on Saturday, February 14 from noon to 3pm. Pat O Bannon will emcee the fashion show, male models of all sizes fashion various clothing styles along the runway. Refreshments will be served and door prizes will be given away. Minority and Women's Construction Training Program "Managing Growth" Campbellsville University Louisville Center February 17th-18th from 9AM to 4PM Campbellsville University will be holding a Minority and Women s Construction Training Program at their Louisville Center, located at 2300 Greene Way. The seminar will be held on Tuesday, February 17th from 9 AM to 4 PM and will cover topics such as Project Management, Insurance, Bonding, and Financing, Strategic planning, Safety requirements, Bidding strategies, and Contracts and negotiations. The registration fee is $50, seating is limited! Lunch will be included as well. The University of Louisville is offering FREE grants for veterans who wish to start their own business. The program is called VetStart. It is a 10 week program that will begin meeting every Thursday of each week Starting February 19, 2015 from 6-9:15pm at NUCLEUS located at 300 E. Market. Grant awardees receive one-on-one mentoring, start up training and limited funds for eligible start-up expenses and will learn to hone their business ideas, develop strategy and most importantly build a network of others who can help. The dates will vary by address. Dates for individual addresses can be found by entering the address into the My Louisville tool on the city website at Garbage must be set at the curb or the alley no earlier than 4 PM on the day before your collection day and no later than 6 AM on collection day. All containers must be removed from the street or alley no later than 4 PM the day after collection and stored on your property.
