Louisville Grows 2018 Community Garden Grant The Louisville Grows 2018 Community Garden Grant provides up to $1,000 in-kind or materials for new or expanding gardens managed by community organizations, garden clubs, neighborhood associations, faith-based organizations, and motivated community members in Louisville, KY. Schools and for-profit entities are not eligible. If a grant is awarded, groups are required to provide 10% in matching funds. As we commemorate his life and duty by unveiling a street sign in his name in front of the First Division he so honorably served. Pothole Blitz 2018 is Here! Pothole Blitz 2018 is officially underway. Public Works crews are moving across the city to patch potholes created by the harsh winter weather. Citizens can help in the blitz by reporting potholes to MetroCall in one of three ways. Those using Twitter can use the hashtag #502pothole. Include the hashtag along with the address or nearest intersection of the pothole location and a photo of the pothole in any tweet. There s also a pothole recording form at the top of the city website Louisvilleky.gov. Click on the Report Pothole link, put in the location information and press send. Of course, citizens may also call Metro call at 311 or Mattie Jones has fought for justice for over five decades. She is a valiant voice for equality on the local, state, and national levels. Come out and join the community as we unveil a street sign to honor her activism and commitment to justice. Shawnee Park Basin Project The Shawnee Basin Project is well underway. 4 Safely Cleaning Up After Flooding MSD advises residents whose homes or businesses were flooded to follow these guidelines. Take photographs of the damage before cleanup. Available drop-off sites: Jefferson County residents may drop-off residential flood debris at any of seven sites through Saturday, March 24. The drop-off locations will be open Thursday through Saturday, 1 p.m. to 8 p.m. The Waste Reduction Center, the site most convenient for District 5 residents, will be open for debris drop-off Monday through Saturday, 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. The free service is available for residents of Jefferson County only and it does not include commercial haulers. No yard waste or construction debris other than flood-damaged drywall and insulation will be accepted. Electronics must be separated from other items. To qualify for the free drop-off residents must present the attendant with two forms of identification verifying Louisville residency. If a citizen hires an individual or business to remove debris, the citizen must accompany the hauler to the drop-off center or provide the hauler with the same two forms of identification to present at the facility. Louisville Metro s Funding for the Home Repair Program have been Exhausted Effective Tuesday March 06, 2018: Louisville Metro s funding for the Home Repair program have been exhausted due to an unprecedented volume of applications. As such, the Office of Housing and Community Development (OHCD) will not accept applications for the Home Repair program until further notice. The Home Repair program uses Community Development Block Grant (CDBG) funds provided by the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development (HUD). Because of the unusually high number of applicants, applications are unable to be processed until additional funds become available. The CDBG program provides grant assistance to qualified applicants for necessary repairs that protect the health, safety, and welfare of the household and the immediate habitability of the home. 7 Neighborhood House Seeking New Executive Director Neighborhood House is a dynamic nonprofit that provides opportunities, education, and experiences that people need to break the cycle of poverty. Neighborhood House has been located in the Portland community of west Louisville since 1963 and has programs for children as young as six weeks, all the way through to our Four Seasons program for seniors. Last year, they served more than 500 children, ensuring they had access to early childhood education and quality out-of-school time programs. The Neighborhood House is currently searching for its next Executive Director. This is an exciting opportunity for an emerging leader who can leverage expertise and experience alongside their passion to lead the future growth and prosperity of Neighborhood House. 8 Office of Sustainability Cool Roof Rebate Program Funds are still available! The Office of Sustainability can provide rebates of $1 per square foot to property owners if they replace their roof with cool roof materials. This program is designed to assist individuals with the payment of this cool roof replacement, which will reflect heat, and in turn keep their house cooler and reduce their utility bills. Buildings located in Metro Council Districts 1, 3, 4, 5, 6, 12, 14 and 15 are identified as high heat island areas based on the Urban Heat Management Study and have been reserved at least 60% of the available funding. For residential buildings, $1 per square foot is offered, up to $2,000 (including multi-family). For non-residential buildings, $1 per square foot is offered, up to $5,000 or $10,000 based on the type of roof. Roofing products must be certified by ENERGY STAR and must be installed/applied by a contractor in good standing with the Secretary of State. The rebate will be distributed after the following information is provided: application, purchase receipt, photos of completed application, contractor-signed documentation of roof size, brand/name of shingle or roofing product installed, and W-9. Applications can be submitted before the project is completed but funds will not be dispersed until project completion. 10 Free Tax Preparation for Louisville Residents There are free tax preparation sites across Louisville that will provide federal and state income tax assistance to eligible residents VITA and AARP volunteers available at sites across Louisville also will help residents determine eligibility for Earned Income Tax Credit. Louisville Asset Building Coalition's Volunteer Income Tax Assistance, or VITA, and AARP Tax Aide programs provide trained, IRS-certified volunteers to offer free tax services at more than 20 sites across the city. 14 Save the Date - Community Calendar March 16th, 2018 Sunday Monday Tuesday Wednesday Thursday Friday Saturday 16 Portland Fresh Stop Training Institute 11:00am - 1:00pm Addressing Vacant Property in District 5 On Saturday, March 17 at 10:00am at 2615 Magazine Street Councilwoman Cheri Bryant Hamilton is joining the Reverend Charles Elliott and representatives of organized labor in the Louisville area to applaud the efforts of Jesus and a Job. We have more than 5,000 vacant and abandoned properties in our city and as we continue to work towards returning those properties to livable affordable housing, this effort shows one of the ways to tackle the problem one house at a time, says Hamilton. For several weeks, the Jesus and a Job program has been working to convert 2615 Magazine Street from an abandoned structure into an affordable home for an individual or a needy family. It is our hope that when finished, this house could be the first home for a person looking to first rent and then buy and become part of the community, says Rev. Elliott. This is the fourth house the program has worked on since the beginning of the year. Jesus and a Job is a program that employs ex-felons to work on abandoned properties.
