Please be on time! 2018 Yearlings Club Forum Series Presented by the University of Louisville Food Deserts: Causes, Consequences, and Solutions January 21 at 4:00 pm - 6:00 pm The Yearlings Club (4309 W. Broadway) Statistics show that communities of color are more likely to live in food deserts - areas where communities lack access to supermarkets and other sources of affordable, nutritious foods necessary for maintaining a healthy diet. Food deserts play a major role in poor health and environmental degradation. Louisville is not exempt from the problem of food deserts as evidenced by the closure of two Kroger stores in west and southwest Louisville. Our presenters will offer a local and national perspective on the issue through a discussion on the causes, consequences, and offer solutions. 3 Councilwoman Cheri Bryant Hamilton Elected 2018 Majority Leader On January 11, 2018, members of the Democratic Caucus elected Councilwoman Cheri Bryant Hamilton (D-5) to serve as Majority Caucus Chair for The position also carries with it the title of President Pro Tem of the Metro Council. The Caucus elected Councilwoman Barbara Sexton Smith (D-4) to serve as Vice-Chair. I am honored to serve this Caucus and I look forward to the work we will undertake in the next year to advance legislation and fund projects, programs, and organizations that will create a better city for all, said Hamilton. We have challenges ahead and we advocate on behalf of our constituents, many of whom are facing unprecedented challenges during one of the most precarious times, and our goal should always be a better quality of life for those who ask us to serve. Hamilton is a founding member of the Metro Council, first elected to serve in 2002, and was the initial Majority Leader of the caucus. She represents residents of Portland, Russell, Chickasaw, Shawnee and Parkland. 4 EmpowerWest City-Wide Book Read During Black History Month Presented by Simmons College of Kentucky February 12 from 7:00 pm - 9:30 pm Crescent Hill Baptist Church (2800 Frankfort Avenue) Richard Rothstein, author of the book The Color of Law will discuss the book and engage in conversation with Dr. Kevin Cosby. The event is being organized by EmpowerWest. The Color of Law is the book EmpowerWest is encouraging people to read during Black History Month - February JCPS Opens Satellite Office at California Community Center A new satellite office that will better serve JCPS students and families in West Louisville opened on January 4. The new office, located inside the California Community Center at 1600 W. St. Catherine Street, will be open on Tuesdays and Thursdays from 9:30 a.m. until 4:30 p.m. Creating an office that would provide equitable access to district services and resources for our families in West Louisville was a top priority for me when I became acting superintendent, said JCPS Acting Superintendent Marty Pollio during a ribbon-cutting ceremony held at the new office. By taking our services directly to the community, as this new office will do, we can engage with families and promote family involvement in a much greater way. JCPS will provide Exceptional Child Education (ECE), Title I assistance, student assignment assistance for parents, student relations staff will be on site, and diversity, equity and poverty programs will be facilitated at the office as well. School board member Diane Porter said, "Being able to build a bridge from school to home is integral when talking about the success of our students." "I appreciate Dr. Pollio and all of the JCPS staff for making this investment of time and resources in West Louisville our students and their families are worth it," Porter said. 4 Congratulations to Diane Porter, 2018 JCPS School Board Chair Longtime educator and school board member, Diane Porter, is once again the chairwoman of thejefferson County Board of Education. Board members voted unanimously to elect Porter following former board chairman Chris Brady's decision to step down from the leadership position. She s served on the board since 2010, representing District 1. She became JCPS s first African American woman to chair the school board in 2012 when she was first elected to the position. With her elevation back to the leadership role, she remains the only African American woman to lead a board in a district where the student population is nearly 40 percent black.

Crisis Phase of Low Income Home Energy Assistance Program (LIHEAP) Expanded eligibility allows residents with a past due amount on current utility bill to apply The annual program that helps prevent low income residents of Louisville from being disconnected from utility services began Monday, Jan. 8, LIHEAP, the Low Income Home Energy Assistance Program, is administered by Louisville Metro Office of Resilience and Community Services. The Crisis Phase of LIHEAP will run from Jan. 8 - March 30, or until available funds have been expended, whichever comes first. This year s Crisis Program features expanded eligibility which allows residents receiving a current utility bill with a past due amount to apply, in addition to continuing to serve residents receiving a disconnect notice. Residents wishing to apply must make an appointment utilizing the automated appointment system. Appointments can be scheduled by phone by calling or online at louisvilleky.cascheduler.com. The toll-free service is currently open and is available twenty-four hours a day, seven days a week. Applicants must be Jefferson County residents with a household income at or below 130 percent of the federal poverty guidelines (e.g. for a household of four, the gross monthly income cannot exceed $2,665.00). Applicants must also meet one of the following eligibility requirements: Disconnect notice from utility service provider, or Current bill with a past due amount, or Eviction notice if utilities are included in the rent, or Bulk fuel is within four days of running out; or Pre-paid electric services is within ten days of running out. 5

6 BMe Community Issues 2018 Call for Stories From Black Men Nominate a black man doing good for the $10,0000 prize Deadline: February 23, 2018 BMe Community is an award-winning network of community-builders known for defining people by their positive contributions to society and enlisting incredible black men who inspire us to be better together. As a national network, BMe Community places a spotlight on the many ways that inspirational black men bring out the best in their cities so that these cities present a more attractive image as well. Since 2012, BMe has awarded more $2 million to men who are deeply committed to the well-being of others and are making a substantial positive impact on communities across the country. The network is currently accepting applications from black men who are social entrepreneurs, innovators, and difference-makers in greater Akron, Louisville, Miami, or Pittsburgh. Through the program, recipients will receive up to $10,000 each to build on the good they are already doing within their communities and, ultimately, to help create a more caring and prosperous region through their efforts. Grant recipients also will travel to Washington, D.C., to be inducted into a fellowship of their peers. To be eligible, nominees must be black men who are at least 18 years old and live in Akron, Louisville, Miami, or Pittsburgh. We would like to remind you that this is also a great time to focus on your dental health. Poor oral health can lead to cavities, broken teeth, and infections. James Graham Brown Foundation Seeks Applications for Quality of Life Grants The James Graham Brown Foundation is accepting applications for its Quality of Life Core Organization Support program, which is designed to strengthen nonprofit organizations working to address key community needs in the metro Louisville region. Priority will be given to organizations and projects that address a need for action, have multiple sources of support, and a have clear plan for sustainability. In 2017, grants awarded by the foundation ranged from $25,000 to $1 million. To be eligible, applicants must be a charitable nonprofit organization with a tax-exempt designation under Section 501(c)(3) of the Internal Revenue Code working to address key community needs in the greater Louisville area. 8 City's External Agency Fund Applications are Now Open Grants available to social services and arts and creative industry organizations Louisville Metro Government began accepting applications for External Agency Fund grants Saturday, January 6, 2018 at 8 a.m. for the service period of FY19 (July 1, June 30, 2019). These General Fund grants are awarded to non-profit, non-governmental, or "external, agencies that contribute to the city's cultural, social and economic vitality. All agencies wishing to submit an application are required to have at least one representative participate in a mandatory application orientation. The mandatory orientation is available on the External Agency Fund (EAF) website at and will provide information about the deadlines, how to access the application and general information about the application. The grants are available for Social Services programs, administered by the Louisville Metro Office of Resilience and Community Services (RCS), and for Arts and Creative Industries programs, administered by the Louisville Metro Department of Economic Development. The External Agency Fund grants are awarded annually to non-profit organizations offering programs or services in Louisville/Jefferson County that align with the Mayor's and departments' strategic goals. For the Social Services funding program, qualified non-profits committed to providing services that achieve meaningful outcomes for Louisville citizens in the following key areas are encouraged to apply: Decreasing homelessness Increasing household financial stability Increasing youth, teen, and/or young adult engagement in quality programming; or Increasing access to services and resources for a targeted population. For the Arts and Creative Industries funding program, non-profits committed to providing arts and cultural attractions and opportunities to the Louisville community are encouraged to apply. Eligible arts and creative industries organizations should demonstrate how a program supports the following primary focus areas of Mayor Fischer's Strategic Plan: Economic development initiatives related to arts and creative industries Creative place making and arts-based programs in neighborhoods that have experienced disinvestment Opportunities for citizens to access and engage with visual, performing and other arts experiences Louisville Metro Government employs a competitive granting strategy and strives to award funding to agencies that demonstrate measurable positive impact in the community and are good stewards of taxpayer dollars. Successful grantees will be required to report their success in meeting goals and outcomes.
