Vote for location of the MSD Southwest CSO Basin in Shawnee Park MSD held a public meeting concerning the Southwestern Parkway Basin on Thursday, November 12, 2015, at The MSD staff presented information about location options for the basin within Shawnee Park. Attendees were able to anonymously express their opinions about various options. Basins are a key part of achieving clean, safe waterways Rainwater can enter the sewer system during rain events and cause a mixture of sewage and rainwater to flow untreated into our waterways. Proposed and existing storage basins throughout our city are designed to retain the mixture of rainwater and sewage until the rain subsides, and then gradually release it back into the sewer system for treatment. Southwestern Parkway Storage Basin This Southwestern Parkway Storage Basin which will be a covered underground facility will be located in Shawnee Park, near the Southwestern Parkway entrance. Input from the neighbors at public meetings and online will help determine the aesthetics of the finished project, as well as the use of the area above the basin. When completed, the project will be largely invisible to the public and will enhance not only the water quality of the Ohio River, but also the quality of one of Louisville s premiere parks. Please take the survey and let MSD know your opinion on the better location for the basin. If you were unable to attend and would like to participate in the survey please visit: Basin.aspx 67,668 Catch Basin...Billions of Leaves!! Prevent surface flooding in your neighborhood by raking leaves and debris away from catch basins, and properly disposing of the debris. If basins are still clogged contact MSD Customer Relations at Do not blow or rake leaves into the street or sewer. It s against the law! 1

News Update Beginning in January 2016, Shawnee Christian Healthcare Center (SCHC) will operate a school-based clinic at The Academy at Shawnee. Middle and high school students as well as school staff will be able to utilize the clinic services. Parental permission forms for students to use the clinic will be sent home over the holiday break. Why has SCHC teamed with The Academy at Shawnee to have a school clinic? Multiple studies have shown clinics based at schools help with the following: reduced number of students who leave school during the day due to illness; reduced number of students with disruptive behavior or discipline problems; high student user and parent satisfaction; and high satisfaction of school personnel with school-based clinic services. Shawnee Launches JAG Program Some Jefferson County high school students attending The Shawnee in West Louisville are earning their pilot s licenses, working on experiments that will be flown into space, or preparing to attend the U.S. Naval Academy. Others are at risk of dropping out. But with a graduation rate of 72.5 percent and nearly 80 percent of the students from lower-income families, additional resources to help students take advantage of opportunities available at the aviation and engineering magnet school can make a significant difference. One hundred local young adults will get a second chance at success through this new city initiative. The REImage program will target 100 young people, ages 18-24, who are facing adult misdemeanor charges. Program mentors and case managers will help the youth navigate the court system, connect with jobs and further their education by obtaining a GED or enrolling in college or training. They will also receive guidance and support in dealing with personal issues such as addressing their charges with employers, parenthood and alcohol and drug use. REImage is an initiative of the city s Office for Safe and Healthy Neighborhoods. The purpose of the Office is to facilitate Louisville being a community which supports every citizen from Prenatal through Education to Career. This new effort of REImage extends the work that KentuckianaWorks and the Office for Safe and Healthy Neighborhoods are already doing through the federally-funded Right Turn program. Right Turn works with young people ages 16 to 21 who have had brushes with the juvenile justice system, or are at high risk of continuing a crime filled path. Fischer saw a need to expand the efforts of the Right Turn Program toward young adults who are more involved with the court system, and the metro council earmarked $200,000 in the current city budget. Recruitments for the new program, which will be run by KentuckianaWorks, will focus primarily on the Russell and Shawnee neighborhoods of West Louisville, although young adults from other areas can also participate. Young adults interested in REImage can visit the Baxter or Shawnee Community Centers on Mondays and Wednesdays from 4 pm to 7 pm or stop by the Kentucky Youth Career Center, 510 W.
