2 20 TH MINORITY ENTERPRISE DEVELOPMENT WEEK (MED WEEK) Sunday, October 18 Saturday, October 24, 2009 WIN-WIN SPONSORSHIP! In 1989, thanks to committed supporters like you, MEDI hosted Hopkinsville Christian County s first MED Week celebration. This year Wal-Mart DC #6066, Kentucky State University, and USDA Rural Development present the 20 th year MED Week celebration! For 20 years, MEDI has helped to grow the community through small and minority business startup assistance, business training & development, policy & public advocacy, and employment assistance. We will be honored to have you as one of MEDI s 20 th year anniversary and MED Week sponsors. Attached you will find MED Week 2009 Sponsorship & Opportunity Levels and Press Kit. The Press Kit highlights MED Week In addition to helping us deliver MED Week, your sponsorship enables MEDI to continue to add value to our community, and provides for great promotional and team building opportunities for you! Minority-owned business growth in US was 30 percent from versus 10 percent for non-minority firms. Yet, there is room for further growth and development. The US Department of Commerce s State of Minority Business report states that if the number of minority firms reflected the minority population share, there would have been almost four times more than the actual number and paid employment would have been more than three times the actual number. This is the opportunity gap that MEDI attacks. To bridge this opportunity gap, strengthen the community, and grow the economy, MEDI increases the number of minority businesses that start and grow to their potential through education, information, and opportunities. MEDI assists 6 potential startups per month, helping 1 or more to startup per quarter; provides technical assistance, resource support, and information to 4 or more existing businesses per month; provides business training and development throughout the year; delivers events that promote businesses; increases community awareness, works to assist government, businesses, and organizations to develop economic inclusion policies; maintains the minority business directory; helps businesses with their certification process, loan requests, business plans and more. Help us to deliver a phenomenal MED Week Consider stepping up this year s support! 2 - MED Week 2009 & MEDI s 20 th Year Anniversary Celebration!

9 20TH MINORITY ENTERPRISE DEVELOPMENT WEEK (MED WEEK) Sunday, October 18 Saturday, October 24, 2009 MED WEEK HISTORY IN THE U.S On August 11, 1983, President Ronald Reagan signed Proclamation #5083 to establish the first National Minority Enterprise Development Week. Initially, this proclaimed the week of October 2 through October 8, 1983, as Minority Enterprise Development Week. By the President of the United States of America A Proclamation The entrepreneurial spirit underlies our free enterprise system and is one of the principal sources of America's strength. Ownership of one's own business is an aspiration held by many Americans. Minority Americans share fully in this aspiration. The success of minority business enterprise demonstrates that hard work and individual determination can serve as a powerful engine for social mobility and economic progress. As a Nation, we are indebted to minority entrepreneurs for their contributions to our economic well-being. They bring innovative products and services to the marketplace, create jobs, and provide training to thousands of workers. Our challenge today is to enhance the ability of minority Americans to participate more fully in the market economy and to achieve greater economic independence. In my December 17, 1982, statement, I promised to designate the first full week in October each year to honor the many valuable contributions minority businessmen and businesswomen make to our society. Now, Therefore, I, Ronald Reagan, President of the United States of America, do hereby proclaim the week of October 2 through October 8, 1983, as Minority Enterprise Development Week, and I call upon all Americans to join together with minority business enterprises across the country in appropriate observances. In Witness Whereof, I have hereunto set my hand this 11th day of August, in the year of our Lord nineteen hundred and eighty-three, and of the Independence of the United States of America the two hundred and eighth. 9 - MED Week 2009 & MEDI s 20th Year Anniversary Celebration!

10 THE HISTORY OF MED WEEK IN HOPKINSVILLE CHRISTIAN COUNTY, KENTUCKY In the spring of 1989, a concerned group of African Americans met with the Hopkinsville Christian County Chamber of Commerce, Economic Development Council, City of Hopkinsville, Human Relation Commission, Christian County Government, and community leaders to discuss the lack of minority-owned businesses and employment. This meeting resulted in a solution, the creation of an Ad Hoc Committee that later evolved into the Small & Minority Economic Development Committee (SMED). SMED s purpose was to promote the development of small and minority-owned businesses in the community. More than forty community leaders, black and white, formed the SMED Committee. SMED s diligence and hard work resulted in the creation of organization to work to improve minority employment and business development, the Minority Economic Development Initiative (MEDI). Initially, MEDI received funding from Tennessee Valley Authority (TVA), the Hopkinsville Christian County Chamber of Commerce, the Economic Development Council (EDC), City of Hopkinsville, Christian County Government, City of Hopkinsville s Human Relations Commission and the African American community s support through a private fundraising organization, the Movers & Shakers. To date, MEDI continues to receive financial support from TVA, City of Hopkinsville, Christian County Government, and the Movers & Shakers, a group of individuals and businesses of all ethnicity that support minority economic development. In 1989, MEDI s mission statement was to facilitate the employment and advancement of qualified minorities and to improve the small and minority business development climate in an effort to strengthen the entire economy. In the fall of 1989, MEDI and the Human Relations Commission planned and delivered Hopkinsville Christian County s first Minority Enterprise Development (MED) Week Celebration. Throughout October 2009, MEDI will lead the effort to promote and highlight minority enterprise development. Sunday, October 18 through Saturday, October 24, Minority Economic Development Initiative of Western Kentucky, Inc., a nonprofit regional economic development agency, will lead the 20th Annual Minority Enterprise Development Week Celebration (MED WEEK) and anniversary. The 20th year celebration and anniversary s theme is Success is a Journey, Not a Destination. MEDI cordially invites and encourages everyone throughout KY to participate in the 20th Annual MED Week Celebration with appropriate observances and recognitions: minority businesses, non-minority businesses, elected officials, industry officials, and all business sectors and individuals. This includes volunteer work, grass-root advocacy (word-of-mouth), sponsorship, attendance at MED Week events and more. For more information, contact MEDI at (270) or hsnorton@medisuccess.org. FOR MORE INFORMATION CONTACT HENRY SNORTON, III EXECUTIVE DIRECTOR OF MEDI AT (270) , HSNORTON@MEDISUCCESS.ORG, OR VISIT MEDI AT 1101A SOUTH MAIN ST., HOPKINSVILLE, KY MED Week 2009 & MEDI s 20th Year Anniversary Celebration!

11 WHY CELEBRATE MED WEEK To promote local & regional minority business enterprise development To encourage local & regional mainstream and community support of minority businesses To address issues and policies that impact the success of minority business ownership and the impact economy To advance the bridge building process that creates a level playing field To continue to provide training that furthers the growth and development of small, women, and minority-owned businesses To increase partnerships and public awareness by educating the community about the purpose and benefit of the Minority Economic Development Initiative of Western Kentucky, Inc. (MEDI) To introduce youth to entrepreneurship To recognize the contributions and accomplishments of minority-owned businesses and the exemplary leadership of citizens, businesses, and organizations that advocate minority business enterprise.
