4 CONFERENCE DESCRIPTION The 22nd Annual Amazing Newborns Conference titled, Little Bugs, Big Hearts: Infectious Diseases of the Newborn and Congenital Heart Disease in the Newborn presents a well-balanced agenda that explores current issues surrounding neonatal care with a focus on infectious diseases and neonatal congenital heart diseases. In addition, (Sugar Temperature Airway Blood Pressure Lab Work Emotional Support) and (Neonatal Resuscitation Program) will be taught at this year s conference. The goal of the conference is to provide evidence-based education to healthcare professionals through didactic lectures, panel discussions and hands-on workshops. The objective is to provide the most current information and research to improve the overall health of mothers and their infants throughout New Mexico. 5 REGISTRATION INFORMATION If you are paying by credit card, we now have on-line registration capability at the UNM CME website: som.unm.edu/cme. A confirmation letter will be ed to you. Please present your confirmation letter at the registration desk upon arrival at the conference. If you do not receive a confirmation letter, please contact the Office of CME at (505) to verify your attendance. Registration includes conference materials, breakfasts and refreshment breaks on Thursday and Friday. Please confirm your registration prior to making travel arrangements. Minimum and maximum numbers have been established for this conference. A copy of the purchase order must accompany the registration. Any registrations faxed without a Visa or MasterCard number, or a copy of the purchase order cannot be processed. The Office of CME does not maintain a petty cash fund. Cash payments must be made in the exact amount. It is UNM policy to charge $15.00 plus normal merchant bank fees for each returned check. Attention participants planning to attend the course: Track C is a full 1-9 course. Participants will be required to attend for the full 3 ½ hour course. Prior to the course participants will need to purchase the provider book (6th edition) and take the online quiz ( html) no more than 30 days prior to participating in the class. Participants will need to bring a print out from the online quiz documenting successful completion to receive an provider card. Participants will be required to attend BOTH days (7 hours) to attain a course completion card. In addition participants are responsible for purchasing the book (6th edition) prior to taking the course. For more information about, go to CANCELLATION If you pre-register and cannot attend, the Office of Continuing Medical Education will refund tuition, less a $40.00 administrative fee, provided it is received in writing on or before October 31, No refunds will be issued after this date or for non-attendance. Conferences are subject to cancellation. In the event this conference is cancelled, the Office of CME is not responsible for any airfare, hotel or other costs incurred by participants. ACCREDITATION Physicians The University of New Mexico School of Medicine, Office of Continuing Medical Education is accredited by the Accreditation Council for Continuing Medical Education to provide continuing medical education for physicians. The Office of Continuing Medical Education designates this live activity for a maximum of 12.0 AMA PRA Category 1 Credit(s). Physicians should claim only the credit commensurate with the extent of their participation in the activity. Nurses This activity is approved for 12.0 contact hours by the University of New Mexico Office of Continuing Medical Education, an approved provider by the New Mexico Nurses Association, an accredited approver by the American Nurses Credentialing Center s Commission on Accreditation. 6 CONFERENCE OBJECTIVES At the conclusion of this conference, the participant should be able to: Understand drug resistance Understand complications related to congenital infections Understand the physiology of congenital heart disease Understand the treatment options for congenital heart disease Learning Objectives Identify neonates at risk for developing hypoglycemia; detrimental effects of hypoglycemia; symptoms of hypoglycemia; identify and provide appropriate treatment for hypoglycemia. Discuss detrimental effects and consequences of hypothermia and prevention of hypothermia in the newborn. Identify signs of respiratory distress, explain possible etiologies, initiate intervention and interpret blood gases. Identify causes, presentation, and treatment of hypovolemic, cardiogenic and septic shock. Discuss basic treatments of hypovolemic, cardiogenic and septic shock. Identify neonates at risk for infection and who present with signs of infection, discuss evaluation and treatment for infection and interpret laboratory finds (i.e. CRP, CBC with differential, ANC, and I:T ratio). List ways that caregivers can support parents of sick newborns. Identify issues of patient safety and error reduction in the delivery of nursing and medical newborn care. Improve application of knowledge gained through use of simulation experience.
