2 Course Overview and Objectives According to the American Academy of Otolaryngology/Head and Neck Surgery, ear, nose and throat disorders are the primary reason children and adolescents visit a physician. Otolaryngologists and general practitioners who treat pediatric patients require comprehensive, up-to-date information on the special issues involved in the evaluation and treatment of ear, nose and throat disorders in children. This course will present plenary sessions covering otitis media, hearing loss, and airway disorders including tonsillectomy, sleep apnea, and vascular malformations. The appropriate use of antibiotics in otolaryngology will also be presented. Course Objectives: Develop a strategy to evaluate and treat recurrent respiratory papillamatosis, tracheostomy, voice abnormalities and aspiration. Utilize a systematic management algorithm for the evaluation and management of the pediatric patient with stridor. Apply clinical guidelines in the management of recurrent acute otitis media and chronic otitis media with effusions. Analyze the significance of, and diagnostic options for, congenital and conductive hearing loss. Utilize the most effective treatment options for nasal drainage, allergic rhinitis and sinusitis. Develop a treatment paradigm and referral recommendations for a drooling patient. Incorporate current guidelines/consensus guidance for oral and throat conditions such as tonsillectomy, sleep apnea, drooling, tongue tie, esophagitis, vascular malformations and snoring. Formulate a strategy to improve the postoperative course of a child who has undergone a tonsillectomy. Distinguish between conditions in children that benefit from antibiotic therapy and those conditions where antibiotics can be delayed and administered if symptoms do not improve. Who Should Attend? This activity is designed for pediatricians, family physicians, primary care physicians, otolaryngologists, nurse practitioners, nurses, and interested allied health professionals who provide care for children and adolescents with ear, nose and throat disorders.
