3 NEED Early diagnosis and treatment of stroke and other neurologic disorders can have a profound impact on patient outcomes and mortality. The diagnosis, management, treatment, and rehabilitation of diseases of the brain and spine is rapidly changing. It is vital that primary care practitioners, nurses, therapists, and other allied health care providers maintain an awareness of the differential diagnoses, as well as new and emerging treatment options for these. GOAL This annual activity will focus on the neurosciences, including stroke and other disorders of the brain, and foster networking and collaboration among clinical disciplines within the region. Both current and future treatment options will be addressed, along with management issues and prevention of possible complications. Case presentations will complement didactic presentations. This year, unique video case recordings will further expand educational methods. TARGET AUDIENCE Primary care physicians, internists, neurologists, neurosurgeons, nurses, nurse practitioners, physician assistants, physical and occupational therapists, and other advanced practice providers will benefit from attendance at this activity. OBJECTIVES At the conclusion of this activity, the participants should be able to: Describe the pathophysology of dementia Discuss utility of medications used to treat dementia Describe treatment of dementia from a patient/family perspective Discuss current guidelines in Parkinson s management Describe integrated team approach to Parkinson s care Describe the basic steps in deep brain stimulation (DBS) evaluation and surgery Identify the indications for DBS and expected outcomes Describe the right time to consider DBS in terms of quality of life Describe the main purpose of Lee Silverman Voice Treatment (LSVT) BIG and LOUD protocols for the treatment of Parkinson s disease Discuss the goals and expected outcomes of BIG and LOUD program for Parkinson s disease Demonstrate physical and speech components of BIG treatment protocols Discuss recommended dosing (frequency and duration) for treatment of Parkinson s disease with BIG and LOUD therapy Review current medical science driving stroke care guidelines Describe integrated team approach to improving and sustaining stroke care Review assessment criteria utilized to select patients suitable for mechanical thrombectomy Discuss endovascular therapies for acute ischemic stroke in patients with emergent large vessel occlusion (ELVO) Discuss factors that contribute to successful mechanical thrombectomy Describe challenges and approaches to discharge planning in the complex stroke patient Discuss patient-centered opportunities for collaboration, goal-setting and therapy strategies among therapy disciplines and multidisciplinary stroke team Review complex stroke patient experience through the survivor s perspective Describe future drivers of stroke and cerebrovascular care JOIN OUR LIST: To receive links to electronic brochures in the future and join our list, please be sure to provide your address on the registration form. 4 AMA ACCREDITATION The University of Pittsburgh School of Medicine is accredited by the Accreditation Council for Continuing Medical Education to provide continuing medical education for physicians. AMA DESIGNATION The University of Pittsburgh designates this live activity for a maximum of 6.75 AMA PRA Category 1 Credits. Physicians should claim only the credit commensurate with the extent of their participation in the activity. ANCC ACCREDITATION UPMC Provider Unit is accredited as a provider of continuing nursing education by the American Nurses Credentialing Center s Commission on Accreditation. ANCC CONTACT HOURS A maximum of 6.75 nursing contact hours will be awarded. Participants will be able to claim credit commensurate with the extent of their participation in the program. Accreditation refers to recognition of continuing nursing education activities only and does not imply UPMC or Commission on Accreditation approval or endorsement of any commercial product. STROKE HOURS Sessions that meet requirements for stroke education hours will be indicated on the credit designation form at the conference. This activity has been designed to meet the requirements for 3.75 stroke education hours. PT CREDIT Application has been submitted to the Pennsylvania State Board of Physical Therapy for course approval for 6.75 credit hours. OT CREDIT Application has been submitted to the Pennsylvania State Board of Occupational Therapy for course approval for 6.75 credit hours.
