2 NavIgatIng the Journey of PedIatrIc DIabetes Closing the Gaps FRIDAY Realtors Way Cary, NC :45 am Registration 8:25 am to 4:30 pm Program The purpose of this activity is to educate healthcare providers of all levels on the current diagnostic, treatment and long-term management strategies for children and teenagers with diabetes. Participants attending the sessions will be able to correctly identify actions to manage the diabetic patient from childhood to college. Target Audience Pediatricians, family practice physicians, physician assistants, nurse practitioners, inpatient and outpatient nurses, school nurses, dietitians, social workers Objectives At the conclusion of this educational activity, the participant should be able to: Recognize how to diagnose diabetes in pediatric patients, including differentiating between Type 1 and Type 2 diabetes and understand the initial management of these patients. Describe basic and practical ways in managing hypoglycemia, diabetesrelated technology, dietary recommendations, sick-day management and parenting a child with Type 1 diabetes in the school setting. Identify challenges faced by a Type 1 diabetic while transitioning through formal school to college and then the workforce. Discuss the future of diabetes, including updates in diagnostic and treatment strategies. Formulate strategies to address and overcome unique nutrition situations seen with patients and families.

Accreditation: The Wake Area Health Education Center is accredited by the North Carolina Medical Society to provide continuing medical education for physicians. CNE Contact Hours 6.25 Wake AHEC Nursing Education, is an approved provider of continuing nursing education by the North Carolina Nurses Association, an accredited approver by the American Nurses Credentialing Center s Commission on Accreditation. A participant must attend 100% of the program to receive credit. Partial credit will not be awarded. Dietitian: 6.25 CPEU pending approval. Wake AHEC CEU: 0.6 Wake AHEC will provide 0.7 CEU to participants upon completion of this activity. A participant must attend 100% of the program to receive credit.
