3 CONFERENCE GOAL To provide a forum for perinatal/neonatal staff nurses, nurse educators, nurse managers and advanced practice nurses to get updates on current best practices for maximizing patient safety during obstetrical emergencies to foster the best possible birth outcomes for both mother and newborn. OBJECTIVES As a result of attending this continuing nursing education program, participants will be able to: Discuss the impetus which has led to a focus on patient safety in perinatal practice. Identify two issues which affect the safety of the perinatal patient in daily nursing practice. Identify the application of one communication tool that would increase the safety of perinatal patients in your practice. Explain how risk factors related to morbid obesity can complicate the labor and birth process and put both mother and baby at risk. Describe the special preparations and precautions needed to safely care for the morbidly obese mother with high risk factors that could become an OB Emergency. Identify three risk factors that predispose intrapartum patients to postpartum hemorrhage. Describe AWHONN s Postpartum Hemorrhage Project including why it is needed and its expected outcomes. Discuss how to address the challenges of providing mother s breast milk for the newborn when the mother is critically ill after a life threatening OB Emergency. Describe how to provide alternatives to own mother s milk, when mother is critically ill after giving birth, to optimize nutrition for the at risk newborn. Describe how to provide anticipatory guidance to mothers and families about Post Traumatic Stress Disorder that may occur after a life threatening OB Emergency. Explain how and where to refer a mother for treatment for a Post Traumatic Stress Disorder. PARKING The Rutgers University Inn and Conference Center provides complimentary guest parking in two lots adjacent to the facility. Known as Lot 82, the parking spaces are located on either side of the Inn. As you turn into the driveway for the Inn, you will see both parking areas. Enter the building by the Main Entrance only. Do not try to enter the Inn from any door to the Old Mansion part of the Inn. Once you are in the lobby of the Inn, you will be directed upstairs to the Dining Room where the conference will be held. HANDOUTS Handouts from the speakers will be posted on the AWHONN NJ Section website for reviewing, downloading and/or printing for about two weeks before and two weeks after the conference. After March 20, look for the conference handouts at Jersey&name=New Jersey Note: Printed copies of the speakers slides will not be available the day of the conference unless you copy and bring them yourself.
