4 Who Should Attend This program has been designed to be of interest to neonatologists, pediatricians, physician assistants, neonatal nurse practitioners, nutritionists, neonatology fellows, pediatric residents and lactation consultants whose practice involves the delivery of care to preterm infants. About the Symposium Every year in the United States preterm delivery affects 1 in every 10 births, or approximately 4 million births each year. The care of this very vulnerable population of infants has become exceedingly more complicated as survival rates improve. The nutritional support of preterm infants is also becoming progressively more complex. Neonatal nutrition plays a pivotal role in the development of the premature infant who is often critically ill. The purpose of this symposium is to provide a comprehensive update reviewing the following topics: parenteral nutrition associated cholestasis, prebiotics and probiotics, management of short bowel syndrome, and nutritional requirements at discharge. Learning Objectives At the conclusion of this conference, participants should be able to: Discuss protein and energy needs in preterm neonates. Discuss parenteral nutrition associated cholestasis and TPN management issues. Review nutritional support for the premature infant after hospital discharge. Discuss bone mineral needs in the high-risk infant. Review intestinal rehabilitation in short bowel syndrome. Discuss surgical options and transplantation in short bowel syndrome. Develop a better understanding regarding prebiotics and probiotics.
