2 Course Information Course Overview This live activity will offer continuing education focused on neonatal and pediatric patients and includes topics in both patient safety and medical ethics. All lectures may be used to fulfill the NBRC s five-year continuing education requirement for the NPS credential as well as towards the Pennsylvania State RT licensing requirement. Participants will gain knowledge of the collaboration necessary between physical therapists and respiratory therapists during progressive mobility for mechanically ventilated patients in pediatric intensive care. Current hot topics will be brought to the forefront as we review the role of high-flow nasal cannula in pediatrics. Case study and lecture format will be used to explore the methods of respiratory support for patients who require circulatory support, management of the chronically ventilated patient and a rare cause of respiratory failure in neonates. The ethics lecture will discuss the culture of compliance and misconduct in the workplace. During the patient safety lecture, participants will learn how to successfully use care bundles and checklists in healthcare to help improve the care of patients. General Information The conference will be held on the first floor of the Leonard and Madlyn Abramson Pediatric Research Center on the campus of The Children s Hospital of Philadelphia. The registration fee is $75 for AARC members and $85 for non-aarc members. The registration fee includes continental breakfast, breaks, lunch, parking and syllabus material. Certification Statement Pending approval from The American Association for Respiratory Care, this conference will be eligible for 7.0 Continuing Respiratory Care Education contact hours. Learning Objectives At the completion of the workshop, participants should be able to: 1. Discuss the benefits and exclusion criteria for progressive mobility 2. Describe the mechanism of action of high-flow nasal cannula 3. Discuss future prospects for respiratory support for patients on circulatory support 4. Explain the correlation between reasons for requiring chronic mechanical ventilation and the goals for management 5. Define alveolar-capillary dysfunction 6. Review the definition of compliance 7.
