2 Symposium Target Audience This symposium is for physicians, physician assistants, advanced practice nurses and registered nurses in the following specialties: cardiovascular, critical care medicine, emergency medicine, family medicine, geriatric, hospitalist, internal medicine, primary care and vascular surgery. Objectives Upon completion of this educational activity, participants should be able to: The Contemporary Treatment of Heart Failure: New Guidelines and Significant Challenges Review the 2017 ACC/AHA/HFSA Clinical Practice Guidelines Discuss critical issues to address to optimize implementation Discuss a clear framework to guide the treatment of heart failure Explore the still unanswered questions in heart failure Contemporary Treatment of Acute Heart Failure Discuss the pharmacological application of diuretics in acute heart failure Compare the short-term and long-term clinical outcomes associated with various diuretic strategies in acute heart failure Recognize one s own role and those of other professions in appropriately assessing and addressing the health care needs of the patients and populations served Left Ventricular Assist Devices (LVADs): The Rise of the Machines Identify patients with advanced heart failure who are potential candidates for LVADs Review currently available LVADs and their impact on the circulatory system Describe the expected outcomes, including complications, of LVADs Discuss how the LVAD team is a model of true multidisciplinary care Optimizing Outcomes for ST Elevation Myocardial Infarction (STEMI) Discuss the common outcomes for STEMI patients Identify appropriate patients for mechanical support Identify appropriate patients for hypothermia protocol Recognize which patients are NOT good candidates for the cath lab Identify how roles of the cardiovascular team optimize outcomes Panel Discussion: Continuity of Care for the STEMI Patient Identify patients long-term goals through preplanning and advanced directives Review the steps involved in the collaborative care of a STEMI patient Discuss the teamwork involved for health care goals beyond discharge Acknowledgements We would like to gratefully acknowledge Dr. Robert S. and Joyce Pate Capper for their generous support of the symposium.
