Review common maternal conditions with impact on the neonate that occur during the antepartum and intrapartum periods. Discuss routine care considerations such as thermoregulation, feeding, hypoglycemia, transition nursery medications, and hepatitis. Identify common problems encountered by the newborn at birth such a pulmonary complications, congenital heart disease, acute/chronic hypovolemic shock, perinatal asphyxia, sepsis and congenital anomalies. Identify the neonate who is at risk of experiencing difficulties with transition to extrauterine life. Discuss interventions necessary to stabilize the high-risk newborn. Perform a comprehensive physical examination of the newborn using a systematic approach that takes into account synthesis of perinatal and neonatal risk factors. Describe a head-to-toe physical assessment/systems review of the newborn, recognizing deviations from normal.
