5 Why cnsider a PLAR assessment? PLAR refers t the cmbinatin f flexible ways f evaluating peple s lifelng learning, bth frmal and infrmal against a set f established standards. Yu can receive academic credit fr yur relevant lifelng learning. The Medical Labratry Assistant prgram recgnizes prir learning in tw ways. Previus frmal learning frm a recgnized training institutin thrugh transfer f credit. Previus infrmal learning r experiential learning thrugh a cmprehensive prir learning and recgnitin prcess. What are the PLAR ptins? The fllwing curses in the Medical Labratry Assistant prgram may be taken by cntinuing educatin r challenged thrugh PLAR as an unclassified student prir t being admitted t the prgram. Cmpleting prgram curses prir t admissin has n impact n admissin requirements but may reduce yur curse lad if yu are successfully admitted. APHY 189, Anatmy and Physilgy ETHC 185, Prfessinal Practices 1 INFC 180, Infectin Cntrl and Safety MTER 180, Medical Terminlgy T be eligible t register fr PLAR fr ECRD 180, Electrcardigraphy, yu must be a licensed allied health prfessinal (i.e. MLA, MLT, MRT, RN r LPN). T be eligible t register fr any ther curses in this prgram, whether thrugh PLAR r cntinuing educatin, an applicant must first apply and be successfully admitted t the Medical Labratry Assistant prgram. Individual curse challenge If yu have (within the last five years) successful experience in the Medical Labratry Assistant field, and have learned the skills and knwledge fr ne r mre f the Medical Labratry Assistant curses, yu may apply t be assessed fr each applicable curse. Fees: There will be a charge fr each individual curse assessment. Fr a listing f the specific PLAR fees fr this prgram, check the nline PLAR Inventry Database. Hw many curses can be challenged thrugh PLAR in the Medical Labratry Assistant prgram? Currently we have 16 ut f 16 certificate curses with PLAR challenges available. There is n limit. Yu may challenge as many f these curses as yu are able t prve prir skills and knwledge thrugh assessment.

6 Which curses are PLAR-ready? M e d i c a l L a b r a t r y A s s i s t a n t a p p l i e d c e r t i f i c a t e p r g r a m P r f i l e COURSE CODE COURSE NAME PLAR Challenge(s) available thrugh prgram PLAR Challenge(s) nt available APHY 189 Anatmy & Physilgy CLIN 198 Clinical ECG ECRD 180 Electrcardigraphy ETHC 185 Prfessinal Practices 1 HSTC 188 Intrductin t Histlgy & Cytlgy INFC 180 Infectin Cntrl & Safety MICR 190 Intrductin t Micrbilgy MTER 180 Medical Terminlgy PRAC 127 Specimen Management Practicum PRAC 128 Phlebtmy Practicum PRAC 129 Histlgy & Cytlgy Preparatin PRAC 130 Micrbilgy Preparatin PROC 180 General Labratry Practice PROC 181 Specimen Cllectin & Handling PROC 183 Intrductin t Basic Lab Prcedures SIMU 100 Clinical Orientatin Is PLAR available at any time f the year? PLAR challenges are currently being ffered prir t start date f curse being challenged.

7 Is it easier t challenge a curse thrugh PLAR r take the curse? Neither is easier. By using PLAR yu may reduce the repetitin f studying infrmatin that yu already knw. The PLAR prcess allws yu t demnstrate knwledge yu already have. PLAR is nt an easy way t certificatin, rather a different way t btain certificatin. Yur persnal level f skill and experience will dictate which curses yu chse t challenge. The self-audit sectin fund later in this guide will help yu decide if yu have a gd match f skill and knwledge fr a specific curse. Methds f assessing prir learning Assessment methds measure an individual s learning against curse learning utcmes. The PLAR assessment methds listed belw are mst cmmnly used, separately r in cmbinatin, t assess learning fr Medical Diagnstic curses. Other frms f flexible assessment may be cnsidered. evidence files with requested dcuments emplyment validatins emplyer validatin checklists challenge exams perfrmance evaluatins (including skill demnstratins, rle plays, clinical applicatins, case studies) interviews and ral exams equivalency (evaluatins f learning frm nn-credit training prviders) All dcuments submitted t Saskatchewan Plytechnic may be returned t the student after the final results have been given and the grade appeal deadline f seven days has passed. A cpy f transcripts and certificates may be included in yur evidence file, but be prepared t shw riginal dcuments at the PLAR audit meeting fr validatin. If I live ut f twn, d I have t travel t a main campus t d PLAR? There will be times that yu will need t meet with the prgram n campus. Hwever, we will try t keep travel t a minimum. What if I have a disability & need equity accmmdatins? At Saskatchewan Plytechnic, we understand that smetimes services must be prvided t students in a variety f ways t achieve the gals f fair representatin. Therefre, the range f services prvided fr students with disabilities is as diverse as the needs f thse students. We strive fr equity (nt unifrmity) and prvide varied services fr students with differing needs. If mre infrmatin is required, please cntact Accessibility Services.

8 Are there ther ways t gain Saskatchewan Plytechnic credits fr prir learning? Transfer Credit Saskatchewan Plytechnic will grant credit fr previus training that is similar in cntent, bjectives, and evaluatin standards t Saskatchewan Plytechnic training. Transfer f credit is different frm the PLAR prcess. Transfer Credit guidelines may be fund at: It is the student s respnsibility t check with Registratin Services fr specific campus prcedures n this plicy. Fr specific infrmatin and guidelines regarding transfer f credit, cntact a Saskatchewan Plytechnic educatinal cunsellr. Equivalency Credit Equivalency credit refers t the applicatin f credit yu may have earned in a previusly taken Saskatchewan Plytechnic curse t yur current Saskatchewan Plytechnic curse. Apply at registratin services fr equivalency credit. This prcess shuld als be cmpleted prir t yur PLAR challenge. If these credits cannt be used fr equivalency credit, yu may use these accredited curses as part f yur evidence fr yur PLAR challenge.
