1 Yuth Business Excellence Awards 2018 Each year fr the last sixteen years, Cmmunity Futures Newsask has been hsting an awards event fr a business plan cmpetitin. We believe it s imprtant fr yung peple f ur regin t explre all f the ptins available t them as they cnsider their many chices in the next few years. Whether the jurney begins with pst-secndary educatin at a University, a technical cllege r hands-n learning experience, yung peple need t be aware f the Wrld f Entrepreneurship! YBEX is a great prgram that prvides participants with an pprtunity t explre Entrepreneurship as an ptin t learn abut starting their wn business. It s an experience that they can take with them, n matter where their life leads them. This cuntry was built by independent, self-disciplined entrepreneurs and by participating in this event, yuth will be prvided with the experience and pprtunity t develp these skills. What are the YBEX Awards? Awards are presented in three categries: 1. BUSINESS PLAN Take a business idea and develp a business plan. 2. BUSINESS VENTURE Reprt n the peratin f yur actual business. 3. BUSINESS VENTURE 2 Significantly expanded r imprved business. Awards are presented in three age divisins as an individual r grup: Grades six t nine; Grades 10 t 12; r Under 30 ut f schl r attending a university r technical institute with a permanent address within ur regin. Awards t recgnize and encurage the utstanding achievements f yung peple in Nrtheast Saskatchewan. 1

Any student in Grade Six thrugh Twelve attending schl in the Newsask CFDC regin (map f the regin attached) Out f Schl Yuth under the age f 30 Living in the Newsask CFDC regin r Attending secndary educatin utside the regin with a current permanent address within the Newsask CFDC regin. The YBEX Awards are hsted and partially funded by Newsask Cmmunity Futures Develpment Crpratin. Newsask CFDC is a nn-prfit crpratin, partially funded by Western Ecnmic Diversificatin. It is a reginally based rganizatin, gverned by a lcal vlunteer bard f directrs nminated by municipalities within the regin. Past submitters may nt enter the same categry fr the same business they have entered in a previus year. The business must be a new business idea. A submitter may enter a Business Plan ne year, then prceed t start and run that business and enter it in the Business Venture Categry the fllwing year. Past submitters may enter the Business Venture 2 categry if they have previusly submitted their Business Venture, and they have illustrated significant business grwth and develpment. Newsask Memrial Award: $100 fr the submissin shwing Cmmitment t cmmunity, passin fr a chsen field, and quality f wrk. 3. Agricultural Business Award: fr a submissin demnstrating effrt and utstanding achievement in prducing a Business Plan r Business Venture in an Agricultural business r a business with Agricultural Value Added ptential. 4. The Schl r Assciatin, if acknwledged by the winner, will receive an additinal prize equal t half f the participant s prize value fr the Business Plan and Business Venture Categries (excluding Special Achievement, Newsask Memrial and Agri-Business Awards). This additinal prize des nt apply t ut-f-schl yuth participants. 5. An impartially selected YBEX Cmmittee will determine the winners. T prevent any biased pinin, judges are chsen frm utside the regin and pssess several years experience in entrepreneurship/business planning and prject develpment. 6. Applicants, Educatrs and Advisrs must be present at the Awards Ceremny in rder t receive their prize unless there are extenuating circumstances previusly apprved by Newsask. 7. All applicants, Educatrs r Advisrs will receive cmplimentary dinner tickets fr the Awards Ceremny at the TBA. 3

4 YBEX Award Categries Yuth Entrepreneurs may enter YBEX as an INDIVIDUAL r as a GROUP in ONE f the fllwing categries: A. Business Plan (The Dreamer) B. Operating a Business Venture (Taking the Plunge) C. Business Venture exhibiting significant grwth and develpment (Seasned Pr) A. Business Plan T cmpete in this categry, applicants will research an imaginary business that they wuld like t wn and perate. The business may sell a prduct r prvide a service that already exists, change an existing prduct r service r invent a new prduct r service. Applicants will describe their imaginary business, what mtivated them t chse their prduct r service, why their prduct r service is needed in the cmmunity, and describe the custmers that will supprt their business. All business plans must include mnthly and yearly sales and expense estimates, a marketing plan t sell the prduct r service, and a plan t address any prblems that may ccur in perating their business. The applicants f the Business Plan Categry will be judged n the descriptin f their business and custmers, their peratin/advertising strategy, creativity, business viability, rganizatin, and prblem slving skills. B. Operating a Business Venture T cmpete in this categry, applicants will describe a revenue-generating activity such as a student run business, r an ut-f-schl activity that prduces incme fr the individual(s). Sme examples f After Schl Businesses are: Yard Care/Snw Remval Business, Internet Web-site Design, r Cmputer Help fr Beginners etc. Participants will create their wn cmpany, raise capital, prduce and market their prduct r service. They will create a Business Plan that describes their business, their prduct r service, and their custmers. Start-up csts, alng with mnthly/yearly sales and expenses will als be included with their plan. Additinally, cntestants will describe their gals fr their business and state whether r nt thse gals were reached and the experience gained by running the business. The applicants in Operating a Business Venture Categry will be judged upn their ability t perate an actual business, rganizatin, prblem-slving skills, creativity, and clear recgnitin f the learning experience gained frm this prcess. C. Operating a Business Venture 2 Fr any business venture that has submitted in previus years and illustrates significant changes, expansin r imprvements in grwth/prduct/service, marketing, ideas, etc. The plan must include ne r mre f the fllwing: - Additinal prducts r services (nt just mdifying smething slightly, but significantly expanding and adding different prducts r majr mdificatins f prducts r services that is wrthy f a prize.) - Entirely different r additinal marketing [i.e. frmerly sld items at lcal events and nw prducts are available fr sale in stres; r nw available nline and website develped t market new apprach]. - Significant grwth in sales financials indicating cnsiderably increased grwth cmpared t previus entry. Describe changes in the peratin and business plan. Explain the bjective and the utcme. Include Cash Flw, Balance Sheet and Incme Statement. 4

6 Typical Business Plan Cntents (N mre than 30 pages) Business Plan Executive Summary verview f the entire business plan. N mre than 2 pages It shuld cncisely reprt the backgrund and develpment f yur business. It is intended t be read by a busy Executive wh might nt have time t read the whle reprt, s it gives clear, sensible, well rganized and specific infrmatin abut yur plan. If yu sell it well here, the Executive will then cntinue t read the rest. [What is yur business name? What is the prduct r service? Where will yu be lcated?] Gals and Objectives list the gals and bjectives fr yur business ver the next three t five years. Why did yu chse this prduct? Yu culd include future develpment ptential, envirnmental impact, is it able t adapt t new technlgy, cmmunity impact. Market Analysis define the particular industry yur business is in. Discuss wh yur custmers are, the market t g after, and likely cmpetitrs in the market. Why wuld custmers chse yur prduct? What will be the benefits fr yur cmmunity? Marketing Plan Prduct what is it, why wuld peple want it? What extras can yu ffer yur custmers (guarantees, free delivery, service, repair, seminars?) Price what will yu charge and hw did yu determine this? Place where will yu be lcated? D yu have special needs? D yur clients have special needs? N ne ever knws all the answers when they start writing a business plan. Yu may need t make sme phne calls, take a neighbrhd survey, r g t the library. Yu can als learn frm the experience f ther business wners r yur parents. There are lts f places n the internet that yu can find sample business plans. Just d a search and yu will get sites like this: They have a prduct fr sale (which we are nt endrsing) but they als have abut 400 free sample business plans that yu can lk at t see hw anther business might present their ideas.
