3 Page 3 f 17 PROGRAM GUIDELINES PROGRAM SUMMARY The AACR Gertrude B. Elin Cancer Research Award represents a jint effrt t encurage and supprt tenure-eligible junir faculty. The research prpsed fr funding must fcus n research in cancer etilgy, diagnsis, treatment, r preventin and may be basic, translatinal, r clinical in nature. The Award prvides a ne-year grant f $75,000 fr expenses related t the research prject, which may include salary and benefits f the grant recipient, pstdctral r clinical research fellws, graduate students (including tuitin csts), and research assistants, research/labratry supplies, equipment, travel, publicatin charges fr manuscripts that pertain directly t the funded prject, and ther research expenses. It is anticipated that ne grant will be funded. The recipient f the 2017 AACR Gertrude B. Elin Cancer Research Award is required t give a presentatin f their research in a minisympsium at the AACR Annual Meeting (Travel supprt will be prvided, separate frm this grant, fr the grant recipient t attend the 2018 meeting.) APPLICATION DEADLINE Nvember 22, 2016, at 1:00 p.m. U.S. Eastern Time NOTIFICATION OF AWARD March 2017 ANNUAL GRANTS RECEPTION AND DINNER AT AACR ANNUAL MEETING 2017 April 4, Grant recipient must attend the Grants Receptin and Dinner and frmally accept their grant. Grant funds may be used t supprt the grantee s registratin and attendance at this Annual Meeting. START OF GRANT TERM July 1, 2017 APPLICANT ELIGIBILITY CRITERIA Applicants must have a dctral degree (including PhD, MD, DO, DC, ND, DDS, DVM, ScD, DNS, PharmD, r equivalent) in a related field and nt currently be a candidate fr a further dctral degree. At the start f the grant term n July 1, 2017, applicants must: Hld a tenure-eligible appintment (r equivalent, if institutin des nt fllw a tenure system) at the rank f assistant prfessr (Appintments such as research assistant prfessr, adjunct assistant prfessr, assistant prfessr research track, visiting prfessr, r instructr are nt eligible. Applicants cannt be tenured r under cnsideratin fr a tenured academic psitin at the time f the applicatin. Applicants that have prgressed t assciate prfessr appintments are als nt eligible.) If eligibility is based n a future psitin, the psitin must be cnfirmed at the time f applicatin, and CANNOT be cntingent upn receiving this grant. 4 Page 4 f 17 Have cmpleted their mst recent dctral degree within the past 11 years (i.e., degree cannt have been cnferred befre July 2, 2006; the frmal date f receipt f dctral degree is the date the degree was cnferred, as indicated n their diplma and/r transcript) Applicants with a medical degree must have cmpleted their mst recent dctral degree r medical residency - whichever date is later - within the past 11 years (time spent in medical specialty r subspecialty training is nt cnsidered part f medical residency and will be cunted against the 11-year windw). Elin Cancer Research Award but may cncurrently apply fr ther AACR grants. Hwever, applicants are expected t accept the first grant they are awarded. Individuals may accept and hld nly ne AACR grant at a time. Emplyees r subcntractrs f a U.S. gvernment entity r fr-prfit private industry are nt eligible. Investigatrs wh currently, r have been, a Principal Investigatr n an NIH R01 award, DP2 award, MIRA award, r the equivalent, are nt eligible. Qualified investigatrs are invited t apply fr AACR grants fr independent investigatrs. Any individual wh currently hlds an active AACR grant may nt apply. Past AACR grantees may apply if they cmplied with all prgress and financial reprt requirements. RESEARCH PROJECT CRITERIA Prpsed research prjects may fcus n any tpic related t cancer etilgy, diagnsis, treatment, r preventin and may be basic, translatinal, r clinical in nature.

5 Page 5 f 17 LETTERS OF REFERENCE Each applicant must have a letter f reference frm a nminatr accmpany the nline applicatin. A nminatr must be the applicant s department chair, divisin head, r dean. If the nminatr is nt an active, emeritus, r hnrary member f the AACR, an additinal letter f reference frm an endrser wh is an active, emeritus, r hnrary member f the AACR must accmpany the applicatin. If the applicant s nminatr is an AACR member, an additinal letter f reference frm an endrser will nt be accepted. Fr applicants whse eligibility is based n a future psitin, the letter f reference must verify that the future psitin is cnfirmed, and the title f the new psitin and start date must be stated. EVALUATION OF APPLICATIONS Applicatins are peer-reviewed by a Scientific Review Cmmittee cmprised f researchers and physician-scientists respected fr their wn accmplishments in cancer research and viewed as leaders in the field. The President f AACR will appint the members f the Scientific Review Cmmittee. The Cmmittee will cnsider the fllwing criteria when reviewing applicatins and determining funding decisins: Investigatr. What training and experience des the applicant have t ensure successful implementatin f the prpsed prject? Des the applicant have demnstrated capacity t carry ut independent research? Is there evidence that the applicant is develping a successful track recrd in cancer research r that they culd make a career cmmitment t this field f research? Significance. Is the scientific and technical merit f the prpsed prject f significance? Is the prpsed prject f high quality, and what ptential des it have t advance the field f cancer research and eventually benefit patients? Apprach. Are the verall strategy, design, and methdlgy well-reasned and apprpriate t accmplish the specific aims f the prject within the grant term? Are ptential prblems, alternative strategies and benchmarks fr success presented? Is the budget fully justified and reasnable in relatin t the prpsed prject? Institutinal Envirnment. What evidence is prvided f institutinal cmmitment fr the scientific develpment f the applicant? What supprt, equipment and resurces will be available t the applicant and are they adequate t successfully cmplete the prpsed prject? The Cmmittee will cnsider each year's applicants independently, withut regard t the tpics cvered in previusly funded prpsals r t the institutins f the previus grantees. TOBACCO INDUSTRY FUNDING AND CONFLICTS OF INTEREST STATEMENT Scientific investigatrs r health prfessinals wh are funded by the tbacc industry fr any research prject are nt eligible fr any AACR grant. Grantees wh accept funding frm the tbacc industry fr any research prject during the term f an AACR grant must infrm AACR f such funding, whereupn the AACR grant will immediately be terminated. Tbacc industry funding is defined fr purpses f AACR grant applicants and recipients as mney prvided r used fr all r any f the csts f any research prject, including persnnel, cnsumables, equipment, buildings, travel, meetings and cnferences, and perating csts fr labratries and ffices.

Tbacc industry funding includes: funds frm a cmpany that is engaged in r has affiliates engaged in the manufacture f tbacc prduced fr human use; funds in the name f a tbacc brand, whether r nt the brand name is used slely fr tbacc prducts; funds frm a bdy set up by the tbacc industry r by ne r mre cmpanies engaged in the manufacture f tbacc prducts. BUDGET. Enter expenses fr the term f the grant. Applicants must submit a budget in the amunt f $75,000,which may include the salary and benefits f the grant recipient, pstdctral r clinical research fellws, graduate students (including tuitin csts), and research assistants, research/labratry supplies, equipment, publicatin charges fr manuscripts that pertain directly t the funded prject, and ther research expenses. Budget requests fr equipment that exceed 10% f the ttal budget must be accmpanied by a detailed justificatin. Up t $3,000 per year may be used fr registratin, husing, travel, pster preparatin fees, and subsistence expenses related t attendance at any scientific meetings r cnferences applicable t the research prject. The grantee must attend the AACR Annual Meeting 2017 and frmally accept the grant during the annual Grants Receptin and Dinner. Travel funds are fr the grantee ONLY. As the grant term begins after the Annual Meeting t which the grantee must attend, AACR recmmends that the Institutin use existing discretinary funding t cver the grantee s travel csts. When the grant term begins, the Institutin may transfer the applicable AACR-allwed travel charges frm the discretinary fund t the grant fund. This transfer must be reflected in the first financial reprt f expenditures submitted t AACR. Indirect csts, prfessinal membership dues, and any ther research-related expenses nt directly related t this prject are nt allwable expenses. Fr the purpses f this grant, any general ffice supplies r individual institutinal administrative charges (e.g., telephne, ther electrnic cmmunicatin, utilities, IT netwrk, etc.) are cnsidered t be part f indirect and are nt

In additin, n grant funds may be directed twards salary r benefits f any individuals frm a U.S. gvernment entity r fr-prfit industry, nr fr any research expenses related t the prject that are incurred by these individuals. A detailed budget justificatin explaining the allcatin f the grant funds must accmpany the applicatin. See Sectin 11.D. fr Budget Justificatin template instructins. 10. ORGANIZATIONAL ASSURANCES. Select the apprpriate assurances ptins fr yur prpsed research and cmplete the Apprved r Pending Date field as apprpriate (i.e., mm/dd/yyyy, N/A, r Nne). The assurances/certificatins are made and verified by the signature f the institutinal fficial signing the applicatin. If a grant is awarded, IRB and/r IACUC apprval (if applicable) must be submitted in writing t AACR s SRGA. 11. APPLICATION DOCUMENTS. Frmatting Instructins. Applicants must adhere t the fllwing instructins in cmpleting the templates. Failure t bserve type size specificatins and page limits will result in the return f the applicatin withut review. Type size. Must use 12-pint Times New Rman fr the text, and n smaller than 9-pint type fr figures, legends, and tables. Single-spaced text. Single-spacing is acceptable, and space between paragraphs is recmmended. Margins. The page margins must be n less than 0.75 inches n each side. Page numbering. Reduce the file size f dcuments with images by inserting the image (as ppsed t cutting and pasting ). Save graphical images as JPG r GIF files.
