3 Weekly Schedule- 6AM start in Respiratry Care Unit (RCU) cnference rm every day unless therwise nted Mnday- Fracture cnferences in the AM- wear dress clthes Tuesday- Surgery all day- scrubs Wednesday- Surgery all day- scrubs Thursday Mrning Grand Runds/ Didactics- PM clinic- wear dress clthes/ bring scrubs fr PM Friday Surgery all day- scrubs ALL 4 th year medical students shuld plan t give a maximum 10 min pwer pint presentatin their last week f the rtatin- see handut and discuss with a resident fr help BEING ON CALL Excellent experience t learn splinting/trauma 5 calls per mnth (1 weekend, 4 week day) 3 calls fr a 2 week rtatin (1 weekend, 2 week days) Call begins after the nrmal day ends- yu g hme pst call the fllwing mrning after runds/cnference Orth Residents Clinic Clinic is held behind the Walgreen s in the main Atrium. Clinic is every Thursday frm 1PM until apprximately 4:00. Yu will see patients, frmulate a plan, and present them t residents wh will evaluate them with yu. Apprpriate attire is scrubs. Bring Trauma shears.
4 DAILY Expectatins 1. Be n time. Wear white cat fr runds. 2. Fracture runds at 6AM- listen t X-rays as they are reviewed- think f questins and save them fr later t ask when things are slwer 3. Daily Runds Set ut all the charts (jints ntes are dne in the cmputer s dn t pull these charts) Help with dressing changes after charts are set ut. Try t anticipate the dressings needed as yu get mre cmfrtable- have them ut as we mve alng. Cut tape fr the patients. Carry yur surgical shears n runds and in the OR. Write ntes n patients yu have examined and have them Csigned (see Maxwell guide fr hw t write a SOAP nte)- have a resident explain hw the list wrks t help fr nte 4. Cafeteria apprx 7:15AM. List will be run, bring mney fr fd if yu haven t eaten r need cffee. Residents have unlimited meal mney s dn t be afraid t ask. 5. 7:30AM- break fr OR r ffice hurs (Ask at the end f the day prir what cases are scheduled fr tmrrw/read!) Meet the patient/intrduce yurself as the bserving medical student Help mve patient int rm/ after surgery (wear glves) Offer t write the brief p nte get it c-signed 6. 4/5PM- find the intern/ call resident and ask if they need help/ d any needed flr wrk EDUCATIONAL Objectives All 3 rd /4 th year students shuld have a basic understanding f anatmy/rthpedic exam Learn t read X-rays prperly using rthpedic terminlgy 4 th years shuld learn basic splinting skills Learn basic jint injectin and wund clsure skills Specific Tpics Trauma Management Cmpartment syndrme Dislcatins Deep vein thrmbsis Septic Jints Adults/Pediatrics Cauda Equina Syndrme
5 End f rtatin Presentatin Each 4 th year medical student will create a 10 minute PwerPint presentatin cvering an interesting tpic r case that was persnally seen by the student during his/her rtatin. This tpic shuld be a small tpic and des nt need t have extensive article supprt. Student shuld clear tpic and review the presentatin with a resident nearing the 3 rd week f the rtatin r sner. Try t cme up with 2-3 ideas t run by several residents This presentatin will be given n a Thursday mrning didactic day. On specific mnths this will be presented t the residents n a day prir t the end f the rtatin. Presentatin Suggestins Present a specific patient withut mentining the names (use the initials) Give histry/physical, stry, physical exams Take X-rays r pictures frm residents t imprt int the slide Discuss a classificatin system r scring system fr the tpic Knw the treatment that resulted, and what the final treatment plan will be- duratin f treatment, cast, walking n n weight bearing, etc. Present ne peer-reviewed article supprting management
