4 PREFACE This dcument has been cmpiled in rder t prvide students, placement crdinatrs, placement supervisrs, and placement staff members with infrmatin pertinent t undertaking and cmpleting prfessinal placement cmpnents embedded in the Sprt and Exercise discipline. The handbk includes infrmatin abut prfessinal placement requirements, expectatins, behaviur, cnduct and respnsibilities, as well as examples f the paperwrk t be cmpleted by bth students and placement supervisrs. DEFINITIONS AND GLOSSARY OF TERMS Student Supervisr Placement crdinatr USQ placement staff The individual currently enrlled in either the Bachelr f Sprt and Exercise (BSES), Bachelr f Sprt and Exercise Hnurs (Clinical Exercise Physilgy) (BSEH[CEP]), r Master f Science (Sprt and Exercise) (MSCN[SES]) at the University f Suthern Queensland (USQ) n either the Ipswich, Twmba r External campus. The apprpriately qualified individual wh has been nminated by an apprpriate agency t supervise the student while undertaking prfessinal placement. The individual currently emplyed by USQ, wh is respnsible fr the rganisatin f student Sprt and Exercise prfessinal placement. The USQ prfessinal placement team that are respnsible fr the administratin f prfessinal placement fr the disciple f Sprt and Exercise. Accredited Exercise Scientist (AES) An individual wh has current ESSA AES credentialing. Accredited Exercise Physilgist (AEP) An individual wh has current ESSA AEP credentialing. 5 INTRODUCTION Prfessinal placement is an integral part f the Sprt and Exercise degree and is a c-perative effrt between the agency t which the student has been allcated and USQ. Prfessinal placement is designed t augment USQ cursewrk and t prvide students with the pprtunities t develp their persnal skills and prfessinal understandings. Prfessinal placement als allws the student t demnstrate their cmpetence and t translate thery and example int placement. T reflect the standards required by the prfessin, students must be given pprtunities fr highquality wrk experience in multiple settings directly relevant t the placement f sprt and exercise. It is necessary that when students are undertaking prfessinal placement that they are actively engaged within the placement. Supervisrs f placement students are nt slely respnsible fr ensuring that students have the necessary knwledge and skill base t meet industry requirements. The placement crdinatr shuld play a significant rle in rganising prfessinal placements fr the students in cnjunctin with the prfessinal placement staff. On cmpletin f prfessinal placement, the student will be able t: Cnfidently participate in the daily activities f the agency within the scpe f practice Integrate theretical cncepts with prfessinal placement within the area and interact in a prfessinal manner with ther prfessinals and clients Undertake effective and safe sprt and exercise assessment and prescriptin Implement and evaluate prgrams apprpriate t sprt and exercise 5

6 PART A: PROFESSIONAL PLACEMENT REQUIREMENTS ESSA placement requirements Fr exercise science accreditatin, a minimum f 140 hurs f practicum is required. At least 80 f the 140 hurs must demnstrate attainment f cmpetency in exercise assessment, prescriptin and delivery. Exercise prescriptin hurs must be with clients wh are seen fr the purpse f undertaking an exercise interventin t imprve their health and fitness, wellbeing r perfrmance, and nt participating in an exercise interventin fr the treatment and/r management f a clinical cnditin r injury. Hwever, the service can be fcused n the preventin f chrnic cnditins. Fr these 80 hurs, supervisin must by ne r mre f the fllwing: Accredited Exercise Scientist Accredited Exercise Physilgist Accredited Sprts Scientist An individual with an AQF level 7 Bachelr degree in Exercise and Sprts Science An AQF level 7 Bachelr degree qualified physical educatin teacher with a majr in physical educatin where the placement is in a schl setting. Activities undertaken fr the remaining 60 hurs may be in any area that reflects the AES prfessinal standards. These hurs must be supervised by a qualified and experienced prfessinal wh hlds a qualificatin (recgnised r endrsed by a regulating authrity, such as a natinal assciatin r Australian Health Practitiner Regulatin Agency), fr the activity they are supervising. Apprpriate placement sites include health and fitness clubs; sprting rganisatins and clubs; and schls. Fr exercise physilgy accreditatin, a minimum f 360 hurs f practicum is required t be undertaken in a range f activities relevant t the AEP prfessinal standards, but must include activities t demnstrate attainment f cmpetency as an entry level practitiner in exercise assessment, prescriptin and delivery as demnstrated thrugh effective assessment methds, and determined by an AEP, including: a) At least 200 hurs spread acrss the areas f cardivascular, musculskeletal and metablic dmains t allw students t demnstrate capability as an entry level practitiner. Apprpriate placement sites include exercise physilgy r multidisciplinary clinics; hspitals; aged care facilities; cardiac care services within public/private hspitals and the cmmunity; physitherapy clinics; and sprting rganisatins and clubs. b) At least 100 hurs in any f the ther AEP pathlgy dmains as specified in the AEP prfessinal standards i.e. cancer, kidney, mental health, neurlgical, respiratry/pulmnary. Apprpriate placement sites include all sites as abve, and cancer care clinics/prgrams; renal clinics; mental health clinics; and spinal injury clinics. c) 60 hurs in any f the AEP pathlgy dmains r in any ther activities relevant t the AEP prfessinal standards. These may include diagnstic investigatins r prcedures (e.g. cardiac, pulmnary r ther clinical investigatins r prcedures; ECG stress 6

7 testing; health and wellness checks; jb capacity assessment, functinal capacity assessments, and pre-emplyment checks; labratry and research testing and screening; case management; and health prmtin, r prviding health educatin r wrkplace health prgrams. d) N mre than 40 hurs can be undertaken in a simulated learning envirnment (SLE). Simulatin prgrams must be supprted by an underlying pedaggy r framewrk t assist in the develpment f relevant and apprpriate clinical skills and cmpetencies. The use f SLEs must be evidence-based and include an nging review and evaluatin prcess. In rder t be used as a substitute fr practicum experience simulatins must have clear learning bjectives, prblem slving cmpnents built int the scenaris, structured debriefing, and be high fidelity. At USQ we have made a decisin t prvide all f the allwed simulated learning in 4 th year within the university envirnment. Simulated learning in external practicum sites may be undertaken in additin t ther practicum activities, but may nt replace them. Supervisin must be by: a) An AEP fr at least 200 f the 360 hurs. b) An AEP r a qualified and experienced prfessinal wh hlds a qualificatin (recgnised r endrsed by a regulating authrity such as a natinal assciatin r APHRA) fr the activity they are supervising, and relevant t the client cnditin they are servicing, fr the remaining hurs. Hurs that are nt supervised by an AEP must have AEP versight f the activities and assessment f the learning utcmes, and the cmpetency must be c-signed by an AEP. Mandatry dcuments fr all Sprt and Exercise students, prir t cmmencing ANY placements. Blue Card First Aid certificate (valid fr 3 years) Cardipulmnary resuscitatin certificate (valid fr 1 year) Additinal mandatry dcuments fr BSEH(CEP) students, prir t cmmencing any clinical placements with Queensland Health. Hepatitis B sercnversin. Students must cmplete a curse f Hepatitis B immunisatin and uplad the sercnversin test result. This curse takes 6 mnths and requires three injectins. Please see Queensland Health fr mre details - Evidence f vaccinatin fr the disease measles, mumps, rubella, varicella and pertussis r evidence they are nt susceptible t these diseases. 8 Insurance & agreement All students n prfessinal placement must be cvered by insurance. USQ cvers full public risk and prfessinal indemnity insurance in relatin t acts and missins f students undertaken as part f their university prgram, and university staff while acting fr and n behalf f USQ. The student will be cvered by USQ indemnity insurance as lng as the student is receiving an apprpriate level f supervisin. A student prfessinal placement agreement must be signed by representatives f bth USQ and the prfessinal placement facility, prir t the cmmencement f any prfessinal placement activity assciated with the facility (see Appendix A). Student cntact with the prfessinal placement supervisr The USQ prfessinal placement staff will prvide the student with cntact details fr each prfessinal placement supervisr and advise the student f a suitable time frame t call/meet with the prfessinal placement supervisr prir t the cmmencement f prfessinal placement. The student is required t make cntact with the placement supervisr within the advised time frame in rder t cnfirm the fllwing prfessinal placement details: - Prfessinal placement date - start and finish - Prfessinal placement schedule - days, start and finish times - Allcated break times - Persnal hygiene, dress standards and grming clthing (BSES shirt), ftwear, jewelry, hair, etc. - Prfessinal placement physical address and cntact details - Time and place f initial meeting at the start f prfessinal placement - Additinal paperwrk r reading requirements - Expected expsure, duties and respnsibilities - Cnfirmatin that the prfessinal placement supervisr will cmplete an nline evaluatin frm n Inplace, which is shared with the prfessinal experience staff. Student presentatin Students will als be required t wear a USQ Sprt and Exercise shirt (see Appendix B) and display a USQ student ID card at all times during prfessinal placement. Students are required t wear lng black pants r shrts and are nt permitted t wear gym attire t any prfessinal placements. Students must cmply with the cde f cnduct as utlined in the Sprt and Exercise prfessinal placement handbk and any specifics indicated by the prfessinal placement site. 8

9 Prfessinal placement hurs fr Bachelr Sprt and Exercise students Students are advised t enrll in SES1299 in first year, SES2299 in secnd year and SES3299 in third year, t achieve a ttal f 140 hurs f apparently healthy practicum fr ESSA accreditatin purpses. 1. SES1299 Prfessinal Placement 1 - The student must cmplete 20 hurs in a placement assigned t them by the prfessinal experience staff. This placement will include 4 hurs f bservatinal learning in the USQ Sprt and Exercise Clinic at the Ipswich campus. Students will undertake the residual 16 hurs f placement within their enrlled semester at an apprved site lcal t their indicated campus r area fr external students. SES1299 is ffered in semester 1 and semester 2. Students must submit all mandatry dcuments by 12 March 2018 fr placement in semester 1, r 23 July 2018 fr placement in semester SES2299 Prfessinal Placement 2 - The student must cmplete 20 hurs f ne-n-ne persnal exercise interventin training within internal facilities at USQ campuses (ncampus students) r at an apprved lcal placement site (external students). Students will undertake SES2299 in 2 nd year semester 2 nly. 3. SES3299 Prfessinal Placement 3 The student must cmplete 100 hurs f sprt and exercise science scpe f prfessinal placement at apprved external sites. Students will undertake SES3299 acrss their 3 rd year. Additinal clinical prfessinal placement hurs fr BESH(CEP) students 1. SES4199 Clinical Prfessinal Placement 1 - The student must cmplete 180 hurs f clinical exercise physilgy scpe f prfessinal placement in apprved external r internal sites. Students will undertake SES4199 in 1 st semester 4 th year. This placement will include 20 hurs f simulated learning in the USQ Sprt and Exercise Clinic at the Ipswich campus. 2. SES4299 Clinical Prfessinal Placement 2 - The student must cmplete 180 hurs f clinical exercise physilgy scpe f prfessinal placement in apprved external r internal sites. Students will undertake SES4299 in 2 nd semester 4 th year. This placement will include 20 hurs f simulated learning in the USQ Sprt and Exercise Clinic at the Ipswich campus. 3. Students will be required t return t the university fr bjective, structured clinical examinatins (OSCEs) at the end f each semester in year 4 (i.e. SES4199 and SES4299). OSCEs will be cnducted acrss each f the eight AEP pathlgy dmains: cardivascular, metablic, musculskeletal, respiratry, neurlgical, cancer, renal, and mental health. Time allcated t OSCEs (4 hurs) will frm part f students clinical placements, and will be used as assessment f student cmpetency. 9

10 Prfessinal placement hurs fr Master Sprt and Exercise students The Master f Science (Sprt and Exercise) is designed fr graduate students with an interest in the sprt, health and fitness industry wh wish t gain a cmprehensive understanding f the scicultural, scientific and applied aspects f physical health. SES8299 Advanced Prfessinal Placement - The student must cmplete 140hurs f placement in a sprt and exercise setting at apprved external r internal sites. This placement is nt subject t ESSA accreditatin guidelines. Students will undertake SES8299 in the secnd year f their prgram. 10

11 PART B: GUIDELINES FOR PROFESSIONAL PLACEMENT Intrductin 1. The students culd be either 1 st, 2 nd, 3 rd r 4 th year undergraduate r 2 nd year pst-graduate students. 2. Students will have submitted all required mandatry dcumentatin t USQ placement staff prir t cmmencing prfessinal placement. 3. Students backgrund knwledge and skills will vary depending upn their year level f enrlment in their degree. Supervisrs are directed t Appendix C: What can I expect students t knw and be able t d? t clarify reasnable expectatins f individual students assigned t them fr practicum. Depending n the year level, students participating in prfessinal placement may have a sund knwledge f anatmy, physilgy, fitness assessment, exercise prescriptin, strength training, bimechanics f human mvement, sprts medicine, sprt psychlgy, nutritin, sprts training, functinal anatmy, mtr cntrl, exercise physilgy, neurmuscular rehabilitatin and clinical exercise physilgy. 4. If yu have any queries regarding the thery and practical skills cmpleted by the students please cntact the placement crdinatr. The student is respnsible fr Ensuring that they cmplete all mandatry hurs f prfessinal placement within the ascribed perid and dcument all hurs as required within the prfessinal placement Lg Bk via Inplace (see Appendix D). If the electrnic Lg Bk is nt available, a hard cpy may be used as a substitute. The student is respnsible fr the safekeeping f their riginal hardcpy Lg Bk/s fr his/her wn recrds, as ESSA may request Lg Bks t be submitted tgether with the student s applicatin fr accreditatin r may randmly audit Lg Bks. The cmpletin and submissin f all required dcumentatin (Blue Card, First Aid, CPR and/r vaccinatins) t the USQ prfessinal placement staff prir t cmmencing prfessinal placement. The cmpletin f any required reading/familiarisatin tasks set ut by the prfessinal placement facility prir t cmmencing prfessinal placement. All expenses assciated with sprt and exercise prfessinal placement (fr example, travel, accmmdatin and meal csts). Ensuring cnfidentiality f infrmatin with respect t client and prfessinal placement facility recrds. Understanding and fllwing the principles set ut in the ESSA Cde f Prfessinal Cnduct and Ethical Practice. Understanding the scpe f practice fr an exercise scientist, a sprts scientist and an exercise physilgist. Infrming the prfessinal placement supervisr if the student feels that adequate guidance and/r pprtunities fr develpment are nt being prvided r they are unable t fllw the prfessinal placement supervisr s instructins. Displaying enthusiasm and willingness t assist and be receptive t prfessinal advice while undertaking prfessinal placement. Maintaining pen cmmunicatin with the prfessinal placement supervisr and prfessinal placement crdinatr with respect t prfessinal placement expectatins and utcmes. 11

12 Seeking infrmatin and feedback frm the prfessinal placement supervisr t assist with learning. Ensuring the prfessinal placement supervisr cmpletes the electrnic prfessinal placement reprt within tw (2) weeks f prfessinal placement cmpletin. If the electrnic reprt is unavailable, a hardcpy may be used as a substitute, and t be frwarded t the prfessinal placement crdinatr. The prfessinal placement supervisr is respnsible fr: The invlvement f the student in the day t day activities f the wrkplace as much as pssible; that is, mre than as an bserver. Please incrprate the students as active assistants in wrk tasks, enabling them t understand the typical wrklad f yur business, using their knwledge where pssible. Prviding supervisin f the student at all times while the student is undertaking prfessinal placement activities. Ensuring that the student is apprpriately briefed n all health and safety, and emergency prcedures f the wrk site at the cmmencement f prfessinal placement. Such prcedures include: evacuatin and emergency prcedures such as medical emergency, fire, bmb threat and gas leak; physical safety and security; reprting f hazards, incidents and accidents; infectin and disease cntrl prcedures; wrkplace bullying and harassment plicy and prcedures. Ensuring a safe placement fr the student at all times. Ensuring an apprpriate and cmpassinate placement as this may be the student s first practical experience Maintaining prfessinal and ethical cnduct with regard t all sprt and exercise prfessinal placement matters. Prviding learning pprtunities and resurces that will assist the student s learning gals. Assisting the student with identifying learning needs, scpe and bjectives fr the prfessinal placement. Observing and prviding feedback t the student with respect t prfessinal placement matters. Reviewing student s electrnic Lg Bk entries fr authenticity and accuracy f infrmatin, and apprving if satisfactry. Supervisrs must apprve Lg Bk entries relating t the activities they directly supervised nly. The accurate cmpletin f the electrnic student prfessinal placement reprt via Inplace within tw (2) weeks f the student cmpleting prfessinal placement. Ntifying the prfessinal placement supervisr, as per the Sprt and Exercise grievance plicy (Appendix F), when students perfrm prly r significant prblems eventuate regarding prfessinal placement. Any special guidelines that apply t the student in the wrkplace shuld be put in writing with cpies t the student and prfessinal placement crdinatr. Ensuring apprpriate supervisin takes place while the students are at the designated placement site. The ESSA and USQ required rati is 5 students per 1 supervisr at any given time. Mre supervisrs may be present hwever, student numbers must nt exceed 5 when 1 supervisr is present. Prvide details t the prfessinal placement staff abut their wn qualificatins and experience t cnfirm they are a suitable supervisr. 12

13 The prfessinal placement staff are respnsible fr: Ensuring that the student has submitted all apprpriate dcumentatin prir t cmmencing prfessinal placement. Ensuring that a student prfessinal placement agreement, signed by representatives f bth USQ and the prfessinal placement facility, is in place prir t the cmmencement f any prfessinal placement activity assciated with the facility. Liaising with prfessinal placement facilities in rder t schedule apprpriate prfessinal placement dates. The allcatin f an apprpriate student t a prfessinal placement agency. Prviding supprt t the student and the prfessinal placement supervisr with respect t prfessinal placement expectatins. Liaising with the student and prfessinal placement supervisr with respect t matters f grievance and/r cnflict. The cmpilatin and maintenance f recrds assciated with prfessinal placement facility cntacts, student prfessinal placement allcatins and hurs, and assessment items (fr example, the prfessinal placement prtfli). Cllatin f prfessinal placement supervisr feedback regarding the student s perfrmance during the prfessinal placement. The prfessinal placement crdinatrs are respnsible fr: Surcing apprpriate prfessinal placement facilities fr the student, where all students receive authentic high quality experiences f sufficient scpe and depth t ensure prgram utcmes are met. Liaising with prfessinal placement facilities in rder t schedule apprpriate prfessinal placement dates. Prviding supprt t the student and the prfessinal placement supervisr with respect t prfessinal placement expectatins. Liaising with the student and prfessinal placement supervisr with respect t matters f grievance and/r cnflict. Randm review f student activities at the prfessinal placement facility during the allcated prfessinal placement, with the permissin f the prfessinal placement supervisr prir t the visit. Adequately preparing all students fr each practicum experience, giving due cnsideratin t their stage f learning and expected learning utcmes. Aligning student assessment t the learning utcmes assciated with the practicum prgram, designed t facilitate student learning. Accurately recrding and verifying each student s practicum hurs, sites, activities and skills undertaken. These recrds are retained fr 3 years. 13

14 PART C: STUDENTS - LOG BOOK & SITE EVALUATION Each student must cmplete a timesheet and Lg Bk fr each day n prfessinal placement. The timesheet and Lg Bk can be accessed via Inplace.usq.edu.au (see Appendix D). If the electrnic Lg Bk is nt available, then a hard cpy may be used as a substitute. Practicum can be lgged per client, per grup r per activity. Hurs can be bulked tgether nly if the same client r grup was seen r the same wrk task was perfrmed fr multiple clients. All ther entries need t be individual. The descriptin f services must reflect the time being claimed. Fr example, if the same assessment sessin was perfrmed n multiple clients n the same day, a detailed descriptin f the assessment prtcls and a brief descriptin f the client s results can be included in the Lg Bk. Fllwing placement, each student must cmplete a site evaluatin via Inplace.usq.edu.au. PART D: SUPERVISORS - LOG BOOK & STUDENT EVALUATION Prfessinal placement supervisrs are requested t cmplete tw dcuments during and fllwing the student s placement Lg Bk apprvals via Inplace.usq.edu.au Depending n year level (see Appendix E) SES1299 Final student perfrmance SES2299 Interim and final student perfrmance SES3299 Interim and final student perfrmance SES4199 Interim and final student perfrmance SES4299 Interim and final student perfrmance SES8299 Interim and final student perfrmance Evaluatin f the student s perfrmance will range frm Well belw expectatins t Well abve expectatins. Further cmments If there are areas, which the prfessinal placement supervisr evaluates as utstanding (e.g. prfessinal behaviur), r areas that need significant imprvement (e.g. cmmunicatin), prfessinal placement supervisrs are requested t cmplete the Overall sectin f the evaluatin frm. Prfessinal placement supervisrs need t cmplete the evaluatin frm via Inplace.usq.edu.au after cnsultatin with the student. The prfessinal placement staff will send the supervisr an with the link t the evaluatin frm. 14
