2 Mission & Areas Served Statements Mission Statement Our Mission: We create life-changing wishes for children suffering from critical illnesses. Our Vision: We are dedicated to making every eligible child's wish come true. Our Values: Integrity, Child Focus, Excellence, Community, Inspiration Background Statement The Make-A-Wish Foundation began in 1980, when a little boy named Chris, who was valiantly fighting leukemia, wished to be a police officer. Since Chris wish was granted, Make-A-Wish has become the largest wish-granting organization in the world. Make-A-Wish Missouri became the 23 rd charted chapter of the Foundation in 1983, serving Southern Missouri. Founder, June Holman, and several other dedicated volunteers rallied together in support of a twoyear-old boy from Highlandville, Missouri. In the midst of his battle with leukemia, J.D. Maples received his one true wish to have a puppy. Since that time, Make-A-Wish Missouri s territory has increased to include the entire state along with 6 counties in Kansas. In the past 30 years, Make-A-Wish Missouri has impacted the lives of more than 5,000 local children. A wish experience can be a game-changer in a child s battle for health, and it is that knowledge that guides the mission of Make-A-Wish to grant the wishes of children with life-threatening medical conditions to enrich the human experience with hope, strength and joy. The Make-A-Wish mission is funded entirely by the generosity of donors. Without philanthropy, wishes could not be granted. This year, the average cost of a wish grew to $10,792 which also includes the value of donated goods and services. There is no cost to the family for fulfilling a child s wish, nor is there a financial cap to restrict the wish. Staff and volunteers are driven to exceed the expectations of every wish kid while working to make donated resources go as far as possible. Impact Statement A wish is much more than just a nice thing that our chapter provides to wish kids. A wish extends far beyond a single event or moment in time. Wish kids, parents, medical professionals, volunteers and many other individuals report that the wish experiences can change the lives of everyone involved...forever. According to the results of a 2011 Wish Impact Study that surveyed wish parents, health professionals, and Make-A-Wish volunteers, a wish come true empowers children with life-threatening medical conditions to fight harder against their illnesses. When wish kids are granted a wish, they get more than just a great experience for a day, two days, or a week. That experience improves the quality of life for them and their entire family. Health professionals treating them say the wish experience is an important adjunct to medical treatment, and they observe their patients feel better and comply more readily with treatment protocols when they experience their wish come true. And the community volunteers who grant wishes say the wish granting process heightens both their ability to see the best in others, and their commitment to actively help more people in need. 2

3 Needs Statement Financial: We need funds to make Wishes happen for our local kids. The average cost of a wish is $10,000 and will provide an complete Wish Experience for a deserving child and their family. You can give through: Local Event Sponsorship Corporate Giving (Program Donation, Matching Gifts and Employee Giving) Individual and Major Gifts along with Planned Giving Host and External Event and Raise Funds to Benefit local Children In-Kind: You can help create life-changing experiences and reduce wish costs through in-kind donations. We need your frequent flier miles, car donations, hotel loyalty points, building materials, new electronics and more. Nearly 40 percent of our wish items come from individual in-kind donations. Volunteers: We match volunteers to positions based on ability, interests and availability. Consider your goals, skills and purpose when you volunteer for the opportunity that best suits you. Note: Wish Granters and Volunteer Leadership positions require a background check plus ongoing training. CEO/Executive Director/Board Chair Statement I am proud of the outstanding efforts of Make-A-Wish Missouri and its accomplishment of bringing hope, strength and joy to 309 children who received their one true wish. This would not be possible without our dedicated volunteers, generous sponsors, passionate staff, and committed board members who all work tirelessly to achieve our vision to grant the wish of every eligible child. This is an unquestionably ambitious goal, but it is an important one. Wishes give strength to families, joy to children and hope to future generations. Though we have made great strides, there is still much work to be done. Each year, more than 500 local children are eligible for a wish. Day-after-day, I am inspired by the precious wish children we serve, but it is the children we have yet to reach that drives me and my staff to continue the good work of granting wishes. 4 Programs Programs Wish Granting Description We grant the wishes of children with life-threatening medical conditions in an effort to enrich the human experience with hope, strength, and joy. Make-A-Wish grants wishes with the help of our many volunteers; specifically our wish granters. A wish granter is a Make-A-Wish volunteer who works with wish children to discover, plan and fulfill their one true wish. Wish granters work in teams of two; use resources wisely by seeking donated goods and services; and make each wish a unique, magical and memorable experience for the child. They understand these wishes-come-true are powerful, life-changing events that enhance the human experience, strengthen families, and bring communities together. The Foundation's mission reflects the life-changing impact that a Make-A-Wish experience has on children, families, referral sources, donors, sponsors and entire communities. We strive to grant the wishes of as many qualified children as fiscally possible each year. We continue to increase our number of wishes granted each year and are on target to complete approximately 68% of our national incidence rates, equally 309 wishes this year. Through the use of national standards and performance evaluations, we measure our success. Utilizing national, state, and regional incidence rates, past performance and intensive strategic planning, the Board of Directors set goals for growth and enhanced quality of delivery. The Make-A-Wish Foundation was one of the first charities to earn the Better Business Bureaus Wise Giving Alliance Seal and has earned the highest rating, four stars, from Charity Navigator, the nation s premier independent charity evaluator. 4

5 Examples of Program Success Make-A-Wish's National Office led a study that defined the effects of wishes on the Foundation's "community" and, for the first time, provided quantitative measures of the breadth and depth of the impact of the Foundation's mission activities. Conducted independently by a highlyqualified consulting firm, the study utilized interviews and discussions to identify and validate an extensive range of positive outcomes of wishes. Subsequent surveys of two constituent groups - parents of wish children and Foundation volunteers - substantiated the positive effects and provided quantitative measures of their impact. While each survey addressed respondents' personal outcomes, both addressed outcomes for wish children and their families. 97% of wish families and 96% of health professionals observe increases in wish kids' emotional health. A combined 89% of nurses, doctors, social workers and child life specialists surveyed say they believe that the wish experience can influence wish kids' physical health. 74% of wish parents observed that the wish experience marked a turning point in their own children's response to treatment. 81% of parents observe an increased willingness by their wish kids to comply with treatment protocols. 5

6 Kansas City Walk for Wishes at Power and Light Description EVENT DETAILS: Walk For Wishes is a nationwide Make-A-Wish fundraiser that celebrates the more than 285,000 wishes that have already been granted, while raising funds for future wishes. It's a family-friendly event powered by wish families, volunteers, donors and friends. By participating and fundraising, you help bring the life-changing impact of a wish to children in our community who are battling life-threatening medical conditions. A wish experience can truly change a child's life, and you can help. Event Date: Apr 21, am Event Location: KC Live! T-shirts will be available for free to those who registered the day of walk if they donate a minimum of $100. T-shirts will also be available to purchase for $20 at the new registration & donation drop-off tents. When checking in at either registration booth, you will receive a parking voucher. When leaving the garage, insert the parking voucher and then your original ticket. Lost vouchers will not be replaced. Are Pets Allowed?, as long as they are on a lease, well-behaved, and you make sure to clean up after them. To be able to sustain and grant more wishes in Kansas City year in and year out! We monitor the success of this program by funds through sponsorships, teams created and community involvement and attendance. The Kansas City Walk is the #5 Walk in Country for Make-A-Wish. 6

7 The Bubble Ball for Wishes Sake Description Category The 2018 Bubble Ball for Wishes Sake is our premiere Kansas City Make- A-Wish fundraising event where you can help to make local wishes come true! The evening will begin with hors d oeuvres and cocktails before featuring a runway show and art gallery exhibit designed by local artists and companies using bubble wrap! Pieces are inspired by local Kansas City Wish Kids favorite movies. This one of a kind event will also feature our Wish Kids, live music plus much more! We will be able to grant more and more Wishes through this event every year. We will be able to steward our major donors and sponsors as well as provide a fun/classy and unique event for our wish families, volunteers and all donors to attend. Dollars raised through sponsorships/ticket sales and on the night of the event to fund local Kansas City Wishes. The first Bubble Ball for Wishes Sake took place last year. We have doubled in size and sponsorships and tickets are selling fast. This promises to be a fun night! CEO Comments The Make-A-Wish Foundation of Missouri is poised for growth.
