3 Statements & Search Criteria Statements Mission Statement The Kentucky Institute for Aerospace Education's mission is to improve student learning (P-12 public schools) in science, technology, engineering and mathematics (STEM) and create career pathways in aerospace throughout the Commonwealth of Kentucky. We have developed career pathways in flight/aeronautics, aeronautical engineering, space systems engineering, aircraft maintenance, and aviation management/operations. Background Statement The Kentucky Institute for Aerospace Education began its work in February Why did we create this organization? In 2002, Frankfort High School had started the work on their own aviation/aerospace initiative. In presenting our work at various conferences and events, the question we heard the most from teachers and aviation enthusiasts was, "How did you design and develop your program?". In 2010, we decided to recruit 12 schools from the "lowest hanging fruit" to join us in the work. The first KIAE schools were from Morehead, Bowling Green, Danville, Frankfort, Louisville, Tompkinsville, Glasgow, Greenville, Corbin (2), Lexington, and Campbellsville. These schools from across the Commonwealth had airports close by with exceptional capacity, they had an on-site facilitator (teacher) that organized the work, and they had willing students that were excited about aviation. Once we had our 12 schools, we then moved to create partnerships with various groups, post secondary education, aviation industry organizations, businesses with aviation concentration, and others wishing to join us in the work. Three post secondary institutions immediately wished to join us: Eastern Kentucky University Aviation, University of Kentucky College of Engineering, and the Kentucky Technical College System. To them, we could be a "pipeline" providing their students with a head-start on their education in aerospace (pilot, mechanic, air traffic controller, engineer, and many other careers in aerospace). We also partnered with the Kentucky Aviation Association, UPS, the local Experimental Aviation Association chapters, and other network organizations to build this initiative. Our blueprint is to provide students direct experience with flight, aircraft maintenance, and engineering. This experience weaves in content learning of science, technology, and mathematics. By working with our industry volunteers on this work, our students are learning what it takes to move forward in a career in aerospace. In year 1, we have influenced the lives of over 200 students in Kentucky. As we build this program, we have the the capacity to affect over 500 students in our second year. These students will be the next designer, pilot, aircraft mechanic, or air traffic controller. Impact Statement Accomplishments 1. Created a state-wide network of schools committed to developing an aerospace network (14 public schools from Kentucky) 2. Provided schools resources and support to sustain their local aerospace initiative (flight kits, rc aircraft, free professional development). 3. Developed the KIAE aerospace blueprint that will ensure sustainability and can be used to spread this initiative to other schools. 4. Secured lease at Capital City Airport ($1/yr for 99 years) to build a state aerospace education facility with classrooms, flight simulation, library, operations, and a hangar bay to house 8 of our aircraft. 5.Began Orientation Flights and Flight Training for our students Goals 1.Sustain and scale up KIAE initiative in year 3 to approximately 14 schools throughout the Commonwealth. 2. Provide aerospace resources and toolkits (flight, aircraft maintenance, and engineering) for all KIAE network schools. 3.Capital campaign to build the KIAE aerospace facility at Capital City Airport. 4.Make progress on all airplane projects in the KIAE 5. Increase staff to sustain the KIAE initiative (Certified Flight Instructor, Aircraft Mechanic, and Aerospace Educator) 3

There are pockets of high school aerospace programs scattered in various cities, but this is the only statewide networks providing direct aerospace experiences for students in public education. We take advantage of existing networks and partnerships in order to provide support and resources to our schools. In conclusion, the byproduct of all of this work is that we produce students are high character (precision, persistence, problem solvers and etc.) and perform better in STEM. Board Chair Statement From the governance perspective, the most recent success KIAE has achieved is getting Governor Beshear and his administration on board and working with us to get a permanent facility to work out of at Capital City Airport. We know we do good work with our current facility and budget constraints and are moving to impact students for life. A reliable funding source may always be our biggest challenge. The most important KIAE success is what I see in a students eyes when they realize they can repair a real airplane, then go fly it. People underestimate the specialness of airplanes and flight to the students and we use that specialness to keep the student in school and learning. Our crew of volunteers model for the students appropriate behavior, dress, self esteem and commitment to a long term project and I believe that is an important component of what we teach. 6 Programs Programs KIAE Support and Resources Description Provide flight kits, engineering kits, aircraft maintenance kits, and orientation flights to our network schools. Tools that will be used are surveys and direct communication with on-site facilitators. After first cycle has been implemented, we will examine data from state/national assessments for each student that participated in the program. Learning Lab - 7 Aircraft Description We currently have 8 aircraft at the KIAE location in Frankfort, Kentucky. The goal is to maintain, build, or repair these aircraft so that they remain airworthy or become airworthy. Students learn about aircraft systems here. We also provide students with flight instruction at the end of their junior year of high school. We would like to hire a certified flight instructor, A&P mechanic, and aerospace educator. Build A Plane and Aeroscholars: Provides free airplanes for schools and high school aviation science course of study. Eastern Kentucky University Aviation: Provides articulation agreement for college credit in aviation science. Experimental Aviation Association and the Young Eagles: Largest general aviation organization and the EAA provides free orientation flights for kids ages 8-17 through their Young Eagles program. Kentucky Aviation Association: Provides the KIAE with conference space during their annual conference. 15 Since we are only a few months into our tax exempt status, we have not completed the Form 990 or had an audit of our financials. This will be completed in April 2011 for the 2010 year.
