2 Mission & Impact Statements Mission The mission of the Harpeth Youth Soccer Association is to develop, promote, advance and administer the game of soccer among youth and adult players registered with HYSA. Background Harpeth Youth Soccer Association was organized by a small but committed group of parents in With the help of Gary Odom, Metro offered a 25 year lease for 32 acres of ground in Bellevue. Operating out of the trunks of cars, these parents managed to develop 8 fields and coach 326 players in a fledgling inaugural season. Their goal was simple. Let kids play with kids. There has never been a draft for players and now the program averages 2000 athletes ages 3 to 18 comprising 150 recreational teams and select teams each season. Over the past 20 years, HYSA has become the largest comprehensive soccer program in the state. Offering clinics, camps, youth referee and coaching certification programs, HYSA spans the full breadth of soccer. And throughout its history, the program s financial support has come from individual and corporate donations and sponsorship - not from tax dollars. The HYSA complex has evolved as well - from 8 fields to 18, from a refurbished Quonset hut to a full service, brick concession stand, HYSA keeps on expanding to meet the growing needs of soccer enthusiasts. As partners with the community, HYSA fields host adult, select, and area high school soccer games along with their own recreation program. Volunteers are still a key part of the program. So are successful partnerships. Because of this program and its founders, thousands of young people have played on HYSA fields since Many have been high school and college standouts. Many are healthier and more disciplined. But most importantly, they all get to play. Impact Harpeth Youth Soccer Association offers recreational soccer and a more competitive select soccer program. HYSA provides an environment for children to learn not only about soccer but about fair play, discipline, commitment and self esteem. The program provides them with stress release, fitness, healthy habits, skill mastery and positive reinforcement. In recreational soccer, two seasons are played annually, with an average of 1,200 players forming 120 teams. In select soccer, approximately 500 players participate year-round on teams. Recreational coaches and assistant coaches are all volunteers. An annual three day tournament is also held allowing players from any sanctioned recreation league to participate. Area high schools without soccer facilities use Harpeth Youth Soccer Association s complex as their field for league play. Notably, HYSA is the largest comprehensive soccer program in the state. In addition to league play, an award winning young referee training and mentoring program is conducted by HYSA every year. This program is open to anyone that s interested and not just HYSA members. Other programs offered include Mini-Kickers sessions starting at age 3, goalkeeper training, and specialized clinics and camps are conducted throughout the year to offer supplemental training and experience to athletes. HYSA hosts 2 annual tournaments for the select program and an adult tournament as well. With only 4 employees and a myriad of volunteers, HYSA is a program with year round activity. HYSA-hosted tournaments have attracted teams from throughout Middle Tennessee and surrounding states, boosting revenue for area businesses. Needs Facility Maintenance and Improvement - including replacing equipment and paying for a more extensive turf management program to improve the quality and safety of playing surfaces that are used year-round by at least 2,000 players from our recreational and select soccer programs. Additionally, upgrading the permanent structures on the complex is important to the growth of the league. The concession stand and potential restrooms in the future are upgrades the organization would like to install in order to better serve the community. Scholarships - to assist families that may wish to play but are financially unable to participate. This includes players in our recreational and select soccer programs. Soccer Equipment - goals, goal nets, corner flags, field marking paint. These are items that we consistently need to replace as they become worn out through year-round use. 2
3 Other ways to donate, support, or volunteer Harpeth Youth Soccer Association is always in need of volunteers. If you have office skills, website or computer skills, building or grounds keeping skills, please contact us. Our organization is growing and assistance is appreciated. HYSA also accepts donations via check or credit card over the phone. Service Categories Primary Organization Category Recreation & Sports / Soccer Secondary Organization Category Youth Development / Adult, Child Matching Programs Areas of Service Areas Served TN - Cheatham TN - Davidson TN - Dickson TN - Williamson TN - Rutherford Board Chair Statement The Harpeth Youth Soccer Association succeeds because it has kept its mission focus, built lasting partnerships with the community it serves, and enjoyed continuity of leadership. During those years, HYSA has grown to become Tennessee s largest and most comprehensive youth soccer program, and the only major club that does not rely on government funding to build or maintain its facilities. We offer recreational soccer for boys and girls ages 3-12, where they enjoy the benefits of outdoor exercise and learn about teamwork and sportsmanship. Older and more advanced players can compete for positions on our select teams, coached by experienced and licensed professionals. HYSA has the state s largest and most honored youth referee program; those young referees enable us to run games for 120+ teams each Saturday during the season. In addition to those responsibilities, HYSA develops and maintains its own soccer complex. Through a long-standing partnership with Metro Parks, we have use of acreage in the Harpeth River Floodway (floodway, we ve come to understand, means the land floods every time the Harpeth leaves its banks). Over time we have developed, managed, and improved that property without cost to Metro taxpayers, relying on our program revenues and the work of many volunteers and business partners. Our challenge as we turn 30 years old are several: 1) Continue to operate well-respected soccer programs for kids, and expanding those offerings for adults; 2) Expand the facility so as to accommodate the growing numbers of soccer players moving into our area; and 3) Managing the business of HYSA so that we can meet those challenges and continue to keep our player fees among the lowest charged by any youth sports organization in Middle Tennessee. In this work, we invite your partnership and financial support. 3
4 CEO Statement Harpeth Youth Soccer Association is part of two communities. First, we are proud to support and promote our own community of Bellevue as well as Nashville. Local player families and thousands of visitors participate in HYSA hosted tournaments and boost the area business economy. Our second community is the soccer community. We are part of what research has shown is the largest sport for youth in the United States and around the globe. HYSA is a member of US Youth Soccer which is the largest youth sport organization in the nation. Soccer reaches across gender, nationality and language barriers. Soccer provides an avenue for kids to participate in a sport which gives them a place for fun. It fulfills what social psychologists call affiliative need= friendship and a sense of belonging. Last, but not least, the physical activity of soccer is critical as the obesity rate continues to climb among youth across the nation. The Harpeth Youth Soccer Association is about kids and soccer. We at HYSA take the time, make the effort and raise the money to reach as many as we can by educating players, parents, coaches, and referees about the most popular sport in the world. 4
5 Programs Programs Facility Maintenance and Improvement Description The objective of HYSA is to offer a safe environment that the community can be proud of as a place for children and their families to enjoy. This requires continual maintenance and improvement of our soccer facility, one of our largest expenses. Budget Population Served Adults,, Scholarships Youth sports improve the quality of life and the skill sets of young people. Statistical reseach shows that youth athletes have: Improved mental and physical health, Improved self image Respect for authority, rules and others Higher graduation rates Lower rates of teen pregnancy among girls Healthier lifestyles as adults Description HYSA wants all children to be able to participate in soccer at the recreational or competitive level if that is their desire. Although we try to maintain low costs, our organization and our community have suffered from the effects of the flood of 2010 and many people are unable to participate as they may have in the past. In our competitive program, we often absorb costs of players who are unable to pay their fees. We would like to offer more scholarships to assist with registration fees, coaching fees for select/competitive players, and purchasing uniforms for players who want to participate but may have financial limitations. Budget 40,000 Population Served,, CEO Comments Expanding and improving our facility is key to the future success of HYSA. We use our facility to provide opportunities for children and adults to play and practice the game of soccer, participate in camps and clinics, and to compete in tournaments each season. Because it gets used so much, maintaining the quality and safety of the turf is a priority and also a large expense. Because the league participation and use is growing, it is vital that we expand and improve the facility to accomodate more use. At this time, we are continually looking for creative ways to raise additional funds to help us maintain and improve our facility - our select soccer tournaments serve as fundraisers, we have started an annual online fundraising auction, and we consistently offer sponsorship advertising to businesses in our community. 5
