2 Mission & Areas Served Statements Mission Statement The Ali Kemp Educational Foundation's mission is to provide high-quality, appropriate, safety awareness and self-defense training to girls and women of all ages at low or no cost. T.A.K.E. Defense Training will be known as one of the nation's premier programs that provides hands-on skills and internet-directed information for girls and women. Through the defense training, the foundation will ensure that the values and spirit Ali stood for live on will increase safety awareness in young girls and women and work to encourage volunteerism in our community. Background Statement Our reason for being A bright future. A heart to care and help. A smile to melt worry away. All of these were taken away from Roger and Kathy Kemp when their daughter, Ali, was murdered. Ali represented the best of her generation. An honor student in both high school and college she excelled in sports and was an active community volunteer. After Ali's murder her parents created a foundation to forever carry on Ali's legacy and ensure that what happened to their daughter doesn't happen to another. The Ali Kemp Educational Foundation then founded its critically-aclaimed self-defense program called T.A.K.E. Defense to further Ali's legacy of caring for others. T.A.K.E. Defense was established in 2004 in partnership with Johnson County Park and Recreation District and in cooperation with Blue Valley Recreation Commission and Leawood Park and Recreation. Over 50,000 girls and women ages 12 to 90 years of age have been trained with hands-on self-defense training. T.A.K.E. Defense carries its message and training across the Kansas City Metro and to local and regional universities such as Kansas University, University of Missouri, Kansas State University, UMKC, NWMSU, Rockhurst University to name a few along with a national university tour which has included; Cornell, UCLA, Texas A&M, Texas Christian University, Washington and Lee, Western Michigan, Colorado State, Yale, University of Wisconsin and more. T.A.K.E. Defense Training has been featured on America's Most Wanted, ABC's "20/20" and CBS Prime Time and was twice featured on the front page of AOL as their "Make a Difference" highlighting not for profit organizations. Our goal is clear, as said by Mr. Kemp at each program, "If we can save one life out there, I don't care how many classes we give; this whole program will be worth it." Impact Statement Since its inception in 2004, the T.A.K.E. Defense program has trained more than 50,000 women. In 2013: T.A.K.E. Defense conducted training classes on 12 college campuses, 6 high school and junior high school facilities, 14 community programs, 9 corporate events, and 5 State trainings for Mental Health employees. Self-defense and safety awareness trainings were conducted for more than 5,000 girls and women during Communication continuues with colleges, high schools, junior high schools, community organizations and corporations who request the training for their organization. T.A.K.E. Defense has been recognized with many regional and national awards recognizing its contribution to enhancing personal safety for girls and women. tably the highest award came in 2011 when Roger Kemp was nominated, along with 6,000 other American citizens for the Presidential Citizens Medal. Mr. Kemp was one of only 13 Americans to travel to Washington D.C. to receive the award from our President. Our goal for 2014/2015: To exceed the number of girls and women trained in Develop a Kansas City Metro wide high school tour conducting the class for high school girls in Identify local partners to assist in the funding of classes where donations by communities and or participants are impossible due to economic pressures. Needs Statement Funding for high school Metro-wide tour. Funding for 6-8 local classes at $1,000 each to keep the class at low or no cost. Funding to produce and post on line training. Replace aging presentation sound system. 2

3 Board Chair Statement The success of the T.A.K.E. Defense program has far exceeded the Boards initial and updated projections. Local and national television exposure, articles in women s magazines and word of mouth endorsements from girls and women who have completed our training has grown our program from a local initiative to a national movement. Girls and women have embraced our method of training. We continue to have more requests for training than ever before. Our major challenge is how to secure a steady stream of funding so we are able to continue to train the number of girls and women we receive requests from each year. Several ideas are being investigated to meet this challenge: Identify local funding sources to offer more classes. Develop on line learning tools to provide girls and women with personal safety skills if they are unable to personally attend a class. Be the Big Message locally and nationally to get training in self defense be it with us or anywhere where you can gain skills. The Board's wishes to ultimately have the T.A.K.E. Defense program become the recognized leader in communicating safety awareness and the importance of self defense training. 4 Programs Programs T.A.K.E. Defense Description Category T.A.K.E. Defense Training provides girls and women of all ages with unique safety awareness and hands-on self-defense training. T.A.K.E. Defense believes every girl and women deserves to know how to protect themselves. The actual T.A.K.E. Defense training, takes place in a two-hour session held at a variety of facilities. When participants attend a class, they receive priceless awareness education and practical application of the skills demonstrated and learned in the session. It's our goal to give women the advantage if they're ever in a situation that makes them question their safety. We want participants to understand they have the skills to protect themselves first and foremost and to be proactive with their personal safety so as to not find themselves in a bad situation. Public Safety, Disaster Services, General/Other Safety Education Population Served Females,, Short-Term Success Long- Term Success Program Success Monitored By Examples of Program Success Our participants are surveyed after every class. In our recent past this was a hand written survey compelted in class to now the use of Survey Monkey. Our short term success is told in remarks from mother, daughters, and participants who feel empowered to take charge of their own personal safety through learned behavior changes and hands on skills. Girls and women in our program will learn skills that could one day save their life. Much like CPR we never know when we may need to utilize this skill. The goal short and long term is that women leave the class and make immediate and long lasting changes to their daily behaviors that keep them more safe. To be more cautious and to take their personal safety seriously. Our measure of this success is realized when a person comes to us with a story of what they have changed to keep themselves more safe at home or work or the stories of women that have had to defend themselves from an attacker. Surveys are conducted and feedback reviewed. Program successes are monitored again through our program survey. Examples of particpants comments are as follows: Thank you so much I feel more confident after taking this program. Fantastic program, thank you for the valuable informaiton I plan to make changes today! Nice job! These are valuable lessons for myself and daughters and it is nice to have someone else tell my girls what I have been saying! It comes better sometimes from someone else. CEO Comments We are proud of the progress we have made towards making our community a safer place by educating girls and women about the importance of personal safety. Our goal each year is to empower even more girls and women but often find our funding resources fall short of the demand for the class. We continue to partner with local park and recreation agencies and other groups to host programs for low or no cost classes so as to not 4

5 eliminate anyone from this potentially life saving information. The business community has been kind to us offering pro bono services for web development and maintenance along with marketing suggestions. These services are key to keeping our name and mission in front of our community. Right now we are in a place that strategic and well placed funding is critical for us to continue to offer this training to a community that consistantly reaches out to us as their daughters turn 12, their wives leave their offices late at night and feel uncomfortable, and their daughters head off to college. We all have someone that makes us relate to Ali Kemp and we all can't imagine our lives without them. This training takes us all a step closer to keeping them as safe as possible in a world that can seem harsh and hard to predict. We are at a cross road where one large or several smaller donors can make a mark on our community by being the person that brings life saving education with every dollar they give. 5

The successful law enforcement tool has been adopted by agencies across the United States, including the F.B.I. To this day these billboards continue to be used and have apprehended hundreds of murderers making our streets safer. The Kemp s founded The Ali Kemp Educational Foundation shortly after they lost Ali and then fostered the creation of its critically acclaimed program T.A.K.E. Defense Training continues to grow annually placing a financial burden on the Foundation and its ability to serve the growing demand for training. It is paramount that the program remains at low or no cost so no female is excluded who would desire to take the program. Collaborative partnerships, with the proper funding, are critical to continue programs and make these opportunities available to the public. Visibility for partners is great as T.A.K.E.
